VOL. I11 Negro Press. THE POWER OF THE NEGRO PRESS IS NOT FULLY The race is yet unaware of the power and wide influence of the press. Next to the pulpit no other organ of thought can move the people of all classes as can the press. Why leaders of the race take such little stock in their own organs of thoughts has always been a mystery to me. They know it is the best medium ni existence through which the best side of the Negro can be reflected, and from which literary men who fixed our social standard in books can obtain unprejudiced information. The presistent objection urged against the Negro press is, that, it is not what it should be. To me such objection is out of harmony with the extreme primary ideas of reason. A child is far from what he or she should be, but no parent possessing a grain of common sense would refuse to educate the little ones for life's warfare. Why not apply the same rule to the Negro press? The truth is that Negro editors and publishers never get credit for the services they render their people. Only a short time ago I talked with a prominent white man and he confessed that he was greatly helped in his study cf Colored people by reading colored papers. We must present our selves to the public just at this juncture of our history as a people, and the Negro press is the medium through which the best side of our condition must be reflected. Day by day the Southern white press is painting us in our worst colors, and we will be less than human if we fail to support our own paper, which defend us and reflect us to the world as we should be. Jones is an eminent physician of Harrisburg, Pa. He is the only Negro physicean in the city. By his great skill he has earned a wide-spread renown. His practice which is about all that he can possibly attend to is increasing among the whites. His patients are among the best white families. This work is great. Duphin County Medical Society, composed of all the doctors of the county, held the annual meeting and elected Dr.W. H. Jones as president for the ensuing year. This society is composed entirely of white men. A BAD JOB Guitar picking, mandolin playing and singing are amusements for indoors and not on the public street corners. It is a habit which some of our young men have and should be given up. SAVE THE YOUNG MAN!!!! The most distressing thing that now confronts the leaders of our race is how to help our young men out of these saloons and dens of the city. It is no use talking, something must be done to save our young men. Go when ever you please in any saloon in the city and you will find scores of our young men crowded in these places spending all of their earnings. It is just as well to speak out that these young men who haunt these dens are lacking in home training. Sometimes must be done before the race can get any real recognition. Soon the old men who have borne the burden during the heat of the day will be dead and the great race responsibility will fall upon the young man's shoulders. A "Sewing Club" among our ladies with the object in view to at least, learn our ladies to make their own clothes, would, in our mind, be a most useful addition to the many clubs now among them. THAT NEGRO NYENA The Negro who seeks to decry the newspapers of his race should put his hand on his big mouth. He seems to forget that when he makes such attacks they recoil with greater violence on himself. Negro journals may not be all that they should be; yet, they are certainly superior merit when it is considered that they do not receive the loyal support of the race. If those who stand off and coldly criticise would but some forward and help the burden of the Negro journalist world be much lighter and his pathway much easier. Why these self-appointed, conceited critics will lend their support to prejudiced white newspapers which publish the views of their race in glaring headlines and which blindly ignore our virtues is a matter difficult to understand. Why these same foul-mouth race assassins pay their subscriptions to white newspapers that oppose their race and refuse to pay their subscriptions to those who seek to defend her is equally difficult to comprehend. Why these same blatant hypocrites feel contented to support newspapers in which they cannot find the name of an honorable negro with the aid of a microscope and yet refuse to support their own newspapers which are pleased to publish names and persons of the race, is another mystery. Why these miserable humbugs subscribe for papers which give only the police court news about the negro, and then pass unnoticed and unheaded their own journals which seek to show up the progress of the race is another conundrum difficult to master. Why these abomnible barnacles upon society eulogise white newspapers which slander their race by contemptible cartoons and infamous editorials and then hold up their hands in holy horror because conscientious race journal seeks to remedy some grievous fault of the race, is another matter that cannot be understood. These negroes, with vacuuns in that part of their anatomy where their brains ought to be, give decent people a "tired feeling." They "strain at a gnat and swallow a camel." They are veritable "millstones about the neck" of the race and deserve nothing but hatred, defiance and contempt. The proud bird of the air which fell to the grudd mortally wounded by the arrow of the hunter found to his sorrow, upon examination, that that which had guided the deadly instrument of death was a feather from his own wing. So it is that the criticisms which give the negro journalists the greatest pain and sorrow, are those which come not from without but from within.—Bluegrass Bugle. SWEEP STAKES The election last Tuesday was a clear and clean sweep for the Republican nominees. Never before has the party been able to make such a clean sweep, as on Tuesday. The City Treasurer, every Councilman and every Member of the School Board, except that of the 6th ward was elected. It was a grand success. The following is the list of republican candidates elected: For City Treasurer, Qeo. E. Harris, For Councilmen First waad, J. F. Bellew, Second ward, Chas. H. Stewart, Fifth ward, Redolph Hatfield, Sixth ward, From the above it can be seen that the republicans elected every one of their candidates, with the exception of the candidate for School board in the Sixth ward. THE PESSIMIST No one is to be more profoundly pitied than he who believes every evil thing reported of his neighbor. Such a disposition may be termed cancer of the heart and eats out all charity, mercy and faith in his kind. We are dependent upon each other for life, and for all happiness in this world, and life is a dreary dark dungeon if we lose faith in humanity. There frailties enough in human hearts but the world holds millions of men to day who would die for honor' and word is as sure as life. Millions of pure women worthy of all love and esteem live in our country rear their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, will one day pass through the pearly gates, and he who sees evil in innocent actions and imputes wicked motives to others is a human hyena, uuworthy the name of man. This custom of believing every evil report is so common that the most notorious blackguard in a community holds the power to tarnish the name of the purest woman, leaving upon it a smirch never to be effaced. No weakness is so productive of so much harm as that of sedulity in reference to slander, being responsible for more broken hearts than any other sin. Those fellows in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th wards who were going to get the scalp of Messers Chas. H. Luling, Fred G. Van Duyn and Chas. L. Davidson, found out that they could not deliver their goods. They forgot that Wichita would have a voice, The action of Luling, Van Duyn, Davidson, the whole council and the Mayor in the interest of Wichita has been very complimentarily approved by the people. If some fellows were as "big" as they "think" they are, there could not be cloth enough to make them one suit. But, taking their actual size—you can make them a suit out of one square inch of cloth—and then have cloth left for patches—so small and really insignificant they are. Those who doubted whether the people would approve of the business administration of Benjamin F. McLean as Mayor of Wichita, need but to turn and read the returns of last Tuesday to find a doubt reover and argument settler. You cannot make the world better by being a constant, unreasonable and incosolable crank. The colored ladies who are in the Hathaway Oratory class will give a contest at the Dodge ave., Methodist church [ white ] on the West side next Wednesday eve., April 9. The contestants are: Mrs. M. J, Topps is on the road to recovery, after a most severe case of illness. Mr. R. E. Smith, who has been quite sick at the Missouri Pacific Hospital, is now able to be out among his many friends. He will resume duty soon. Easter was generally observed by all the churehes of Wichita. Each church was gracefully and most appropriately decorated. A grand Easter Program was rendered at each. At the A. M. E. church the Sunday school had an exercise in the afternoon, the Junior choir of the Song Services had an exercise in the evening, and the Senior choir at hight. All was grand. At the 2nd Baptist church, there was a grand program rendered all day. One of the very pleasing features of the services was a violin solo by Master Fay Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Anderson. He played well. At the New Hope Baptist church there was a grand program. At the Tabernacle Baptist church, Rev. Fletcher and his members and friends had a grand time and a most enjoyable Easter program. It was a grand affair. The K. of P. Smoker given by Toas lodge No. 10, was a grand success. The boys had a good time. The evening was spent in innocent amusement until a reasonable hour when all went home feeling highly pieased with the success of the whole. Nearly eveay member of that lodge who is in the city was present. M. E. Wood of Kingman came up to attend the K. of P. Smoker last Thursday, returning Friday. Miller after a week of severe illness is again able to be up. She had quite an attack. Rev. B. Morris, pastor of the 2nd Baptist church of Winfield, has msde arrangements to run a big excursion to Winfield on May 18th, (the 3rd, Sunday) to attend his big Rally on that date. Round trip ticket $1.15. Watch for more about it later. Mrs. Thos. Cox left Friday for Mexico where she will spend about four weeks visiting her husband. Mr. Sam Evans has received word from his wife who is now in California, stating that she does not like that country and will return to this city in the near future. The harvest is ripe but the laborers are few. Bev. J. E. Fletcher. Rev. H. V. Plummer, pastor of the 2nd Baptist church went to Ellsworth Tuesday, at the call of Rev. Robt. Cox, pastor at that place. Rev. Plummer says that Rev. Cox is doing a good work at Ellworth and the people are progressing nicely. While in Ellsworth he was the guest of Rov. and Mrs. Buttler. FRITZ, THE AFRO-GERMAN will not be out done. The amusing play, "Wide Enough for Two" that the weeping clouds prevented coming off at the times appointed will be played next Tuesday night at the A. M. E. Church, April, 8th, if the clouds will not commence laughing at the anticipated fun and weep tears of rain as before. Fritz will be out. Come and hear him. Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Roberts and family have moved to Wellington where Mr. Roberts, is in business. Mr. Homer Roberts has accepted the agency and correspondence of the Wichita Searchlight in Wellington and all look forward for some good reading news from Wellington in the future. Sow, that you may thereby reap. We were accosted recently by some members of our race for using the word "Negro" in our columns. They said that that word "Negro," like "Dago" or "Sheeny" was applied in derision of the African race. Now we beg to join issue with these on this question. The word Negro comes from Niger, a river in western Africa, from which region the first Negroes were deported to this country, and this again from the Latin, niger, meaning black. No true Negro is ever ashamed of his color, and the blacker he is the prouder he should be, as snch will show that there is no admixture in his blood, and that he may be of kings or princes, even though barbaric. We never read or hear of men like Booker T. Washington, for iustance, objecting to be called Negroes; on the other hand, he glories in the fact. Does one ever read of Frederick Douglass so objecting? The term Afro-American is a misnomer and is simply an attempt to copy the Irish and the Germans in their hyphenated names. The American Negro of the present day is an American pure and simple, and has nothing whatever to do with Africa. In fact, the few African Negroes in this country think it a condescension on their part to hold intercourse with their American brother who or whose ancestere had been in slavery. In taking this standpoint we know we have the approval of all the educated and cultivated Negroes in this ci and state, and in the country at large. Had we used the term "nigger," then the gentlemen might have sound ground for criticism. As it is we must have much better proof that we are wrong than mere assertionbefore we recede from our standpoint on this question, and we believe that we shall have the support of the vast majority of our readers. G. H. Young has purchased a store building and had it moved on one of his lots at the corner of Main and Pine sts. This is the only store building that is owned by a colored man in Wichita, and is situated on the principle street of the city. This is what we call "getting up and a doing." Good for Mr. Young. Mrs. J. A. Martin is doing nicely. Mrs. G, W. White is on the sick list. W. H. A. Clark has assumed his position as collector for the Kansas Nataonal Bank, after having worked at night several weeks. Toas lodge No. 10, will meet in regular sessson on Monday night, April, 14th. The entertainment at the2nd Baptist Church, Tuesday night, was grand. Mr. and Mrs. G. Ross Sr. have gone to Florida on a pleasure trip for a few months, and expect to take in most of the principal pleasure resorts. S. W. Rathbone, ex-director of the Cuban postoffice department, for embezzlement of funds and fraud in the dis- M. posal of a recalled stamp issue, culminated in a sentence of ten years in prison and a fine of $35,324. Neely and Reeves, Rathbone's subordinates and accomplices, received similar sentences in prison and heavy fines.
