Monuments of Truths Backed Up By Undeniable Facts
VOL. I11
The sermon of Rev. Dr. A. C. Terrell at the A. M. E. Church last Sunday night was a monument of truths backed up by undeniable facts. Every sentence, every word, every syllable was a sermon in itself. The sermon was a grand exposition of the many needed things for the race betterment and advancement. If the sermon of Sunday night would be put into practice by the race, the great advantages derived therefrom would become visible at once.
Below we give a synopsis of that grand sermon. Rev. Terrill took for his text. Prov. XXII, 1. Subj. "A good name is rather to be chosen than great 'bes.' Beginning his sermon he said 'The name of an object, thing, or being, is not the object, thing, or being itself; but, it is the name, phrase, or word used representing the thing, being, or object spoken of. It is said that 'man is not so much the creature of circumstances, as he is the creator of circumstances.' 'Nothing can work me harm,' said St. Bernard, 'but myself.' If this be true, every man and woman has it in his or her power to save a good name and an untarnished character.
We cannot enjoy the highest good in this life without a good name. Our friends will not truly trust us, without a good name and character. We cannot be really useful or great without a good name. We cannot have or feel the smiles of Heaven in our pathway without a good name. As a rule every man and every woman desires to be good, at least at times. And to reach the highest point in moral elevation and goodness, is in the breast of all, at times a desire to be good. But we must have self originality and self-sustaining forces, in order to be good or to do good. I cannot be good for someone else nor can someone else be good for me; this must be the pivot upon which all self sustaining characters must act and rest—self action. The desire must be with us to have a good name. A good and pure name will draw to itself good and pure names.
At Vera, when the Spanish center was broken, and the Spanish troops put to flight by the French, a young Spanish officer by the name of Havelock sprang forward, putting spurs
to his horse and called to his comrades to follow him as he charged against the French lines. His daring deed checked the Spanish retreat, and rallied the Spanish soldiers, as one long, wild cheer burst from their throats and burst over the blood stained field' they drove the French from the field, and turned defeat into a brilliant victory. Here the act of one man, by his bravery, acted like magic on a whole army, and saved the day. Thus our good deeds or our bad deeds act on others; and it brightens them or lowers them in goodness or badness.
A good name is a property of the noblest possession. It will bring the general good will of all good men and women to you. With the last-blessings, we leave behind us, from such a life, and with' a good, stable principle, a man is like a ship without a rudder, or a compass at sea; left to drift with every wild wind that blows; with no stability of purpose, with no firm fixture of principle. Moral principle is moral force felt throughout the world. 'Moral principles' said Hume, 'are univesal and social; they form, in a manner, the party of mankind that is against vice, disorder and dissipation.'
Truthfulness is one of the grandest elements of pure, manly and womanly charactera. It is the truthfulness between nations that gives them confidence and a feeling of security as nothing else does. It is a truthful, good name that will exalt a nation higher than anything else; and without a good name or character, they are almost nothing; there is nothing you can trust or tie to. if it has no character—no truthfulness. A good name will make it honored abroad and beloved and respected at home, and what is true of a nation is likewise true of an individual. Truthfulness is the base and foundation of personal excellence. Truth in action will shine through every word and deed; it means reliability. It carries with it such a convincing power, that others will trust us. When this point is possessed, that man or woman is already of importance, when it is known that he or she can be relied on. In the business and social life it is also true. It is not intellect or brilliancy that gives strength and stability; but
WICH1TA, KANSAS, APRIL 12. 1902.
it is a good name, an untarnished character. It is not dress that gives character; but principle. Oh! Dress, thou goddess of fashion. It is one of the things which impoverish our people—to dress, to keep with style. And don't you know that many parents, yes, many mothers are sowing the seed for the final ruin of their daughters with stylish, lavish and extravagant dress. While the girl is young she is dressed as an angel, in the latest and most extravagant fashion, and as she grows older it costs more and by the time she has reached young womanhood the cost far exceeds the ability of the parents to supply, and the result is that the desire for dress leads many a girl to shame and disgrace. It is the one thing in social circles—dress and fashion. Fine dressing is one of the vipers of society. There are too many who dress far beyond their financial means. It has reached to the children too. A little girl said to me in answer to my inquiry as to why she did not attend Sunday School, 'I haven't any thing nice to wear.' I thank God it is not dress that gives a good name, no, no. But a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.
Young ladies, and young gentlemen, let me say to you tonight, cling to principle and a good name, as you would cling to your life. Do not spend one sigh or tear over fine clothee. Go neat and clean. The thing needed is self control, patience and discipline of habits, regulated by common judgment. I know no better way to put it than to make the best use of common sense. And that brings my mind to what I saw in the paper the other day: In the Ladies Federation clubs organized under act of Congress, the question was raised on the part of a Georgia club as to the admiisibility of colored ladies; and a committee has been appointed to refer the matter to Atty. Genl. Knox to settle. Georgia resolved that the color question be settled without re-organization by the doctrine of state rights; the Georgia letter said they would have no compromise of the color question on the part of the South. Georgia said they trust to the fairness and courtesy of other clubs of the country to not admit colored ladies. Our colored ladies are doing a great work; organized prior to, and held their first convention in Boston in 1895, and hurled back the coarse insult of a pigmy Missouri editor against our women. But it hastened the convening of the first general convention of colored ladies in A-
merica. They met in Chicago in 1899 and thirty states of this Union were represented. The press of the nation gave notice of their gathering and of their sessions, and many of the white ladies' clubs came with fraternal greetings to their meeting Their great work is for the social elevation and betterment of the race. They are orgaizing in every state and as fast as possible in every city or town, so as to reach the homes.
They reach out a protecting hand to our homeless girls, they try to reach the mothers in their homes. They are trying to teach that there is something grander for homes than fine furniture and Brussel carpets that is to adorn every home with the priceless gem of purity. And every home becomes the safeguard for your boy or girl; they aid boys and girls in getting an education; they teach the girl to sew, to cook, and to do every thing to develop the purer and nobler womanhood; they are laboring to make purity the noblest type of womanhood; they are laboring to save our boys from the slums of hell by helping them to the nobler walks in life, by encouraging honest industry, purity of life and comfortable home getting.
I am glad to say that there are many in Wichita who own homes today who did not have them two; thus the high rents and the exclusion of colored people from renting certain portions of our city are not without good results, as they made many go to buying homes who otherwise would not. I love to see them; have homes and beautify them, it helps the race. These things help to give a good name. It beats card playing and dancing. If you would put part of that dancing time in reading some good work it would make you broader and deeper men and women. It takes all of this to build up a good name.
Character is formed by the every day acts of life. Whatever we do or say let us have our character of an honest purpose in it: Martin Luther was said to be morally stronger and more followed than all the princes of Germany. Such is the force of moral character. A man may possess only his frugality, his integrity and yet stand higher in the ranks of true manhood than a degraded king. Burns, the poet's father said to him "Act a manly part, though you have not a farthing, for without an honest heart no man is worth regarding." Then, 'a good name is better than great riches.' A pure and untarnished name is Heaven's own gift. Keep it as you would life. Pure and untarnished as the gentle dewes that kiss the blushing dawn of the morning and when life's battles are over with you here, with pure names and character you will have an association With the pure and good in Heaven, with God, our everlaiting Savior. 'A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.

The annual report of the city officers makes a very fine showing for the business administration of Mayor McLean, and another thing which is gleaned from the several reports is, that under the present city administration there are more colored men drawing salaries from the City than ever before known in the history of Wichita. The colored men are being well cared for by the present administration. For the benefit of our readers we have culled from the several reports the amount of colored men who are employed regularly and the annual salary of all.

Any sane person can easily see which of the two republican administrations were the more friendly to the colored voters and thus when we say that Mayor McLean is doing more for the colored voters than any other Mayor ever known, we simply cite these figures to substantiate what we say.

Did you ask the merchant with whom you trade, whether he "ads" in our paper? If not, why not? Insist upon it that he "ads" with us.
Why is it that some of our people will leave their own affairs undone and will insist "butting in" some one else's affairs? Be sure that your own affairs are in good shape before finding fault with the affairs of sour neighbor.

What in the world has become of the colored band? Prof. Fisher and his band, at one time, were doing fine and held the town spell-bound. What is the trouble? Wake up boys, let us have a band.
Have you ever thought over how much money the colored people spend in this city annually for, groceries, dry goods, shoes, millinery furnishing goods, etc., and yet, not a colored clerk in any of the stores neither are there any colored stores of any kind. Have we not a reason, then, to ask, where is the race drifting? We long for a Moses to lead us out of this dismal wilderness
We wonder some times if those people who can find no good in the race, no good in race enterprises, and no good in anybody except themselves, wild find a lodging place in Heaven or Hades. It matters little which place they land- one thing is sure and certain, they will make the place where they go mighty miserable, if they are given a chance-
The report of the city officers last Monday niget made a good showing for the business administration of Mayor McLean and his very efficient officers.
You talk about the many draw dacks to the progress of the Negro race, but, the greatest and most apalling draw backs are those found within our own race. That jealous, caniving and envious spirit which seems to be seen more prominently every day, is the real, the hurting draw dack to the progress of the race. That idea which prevails that any one is better, cleaner, more honest and better fitted than a Negro, is the thing which is tearing the heart-string from the breast of our people. The truth just as well be declared by saying that the Negro is his own greatest enemy.
The ladies G. L. A. club met at the residence of Mrs. F. W. Phelps, 526 N. Water st., last Tuesday afternoon. The adies report a fine evening. After spending an hour in fancy needle work the club was served with a fine and well prepared lunch. The club will meet next Tuesday at the residence of Mrs. S W. Fleming.
P. A. Danford, formerly of Topeka, has moved to Wichita and will make this city his home.
Mrs. Geo. W. White is able to again be out among her friends.
The presentation of that Afro-German play, "Wide enough for two," at the A. M. E. Church last Tuesday night, was a grand success. The participants played their parts fine. The following was the splendid cast of characters:—Mr. Wickerwork, a male crank, Edward Land drum; Hiram Brush, his level headed partner, Chas. Furgerson; Ferdinand Crawley, Geo. Smith; Fritz Kellar, a funny Dutchman, Henry Holbort; Pump, an American citizen of African descent, Mrs. Banks; Prince, a female literary crank, Mrs. F. E. Moten; Satira Brush, Hiram's daughter, Miss Lilly Holbort. Every member of the company played a grand part.
Quarles Secures It.
Mayor McLean made the apointment of a colored patrolman Mon night by appointing Mr. J. S. Quarles to fill the vacancy which has been open for several months. By the appointment of Mr. Quarles the Mayor fulfilled his promise to give the colored voters their proper recognition. And we say now that there are more colored men on the city pay roll and more money being paid to colored men under McLears administration than ever before in the history of Wichita. Mr. Quarles is a good man and will make a good police-officer; his appointment meets with the general approval of all the colored people. Mayor McLean is to be congratulated upon making so good a selection.

A LETTER TO THE COL- ORED PEOPLE.
In commending the Searchlight to my people, let me say, our greatest need in the Southeast, is a representative, bold, and a fair newspaper; I believe the Searchlight will and does meet this much needed demand. This paper has been of an untold help to me in my church work in lifting the debt from the 2nd Baptist Church in Wichita. I am interested in this paper because I am convinced of the fact; should we support the paper heartily and honestly pay tor it, we will have an organ that no race need be ashamed of. No race can hope to reach that high standard of American Citizenship, to which all races in this country should aspire, without a true and noble representative paper.
The first obstacle in the way of the advancement or progress of our race is, the prejudice of the dominant race; we cannot reach them or successfully wipe away this prejudice from the pulpit; therefore we must reach them through the public press. Two-thlrds of the dominant race do not know that our progress has been phenominal and without a parallel in the history of races.
Shall we maintain a race journal in the Peerless City, the metropolis of the Southeast? I, for one, answer in the affirmative and say yes I hope that our people will rise en masse and say yes. The way to sup port a good colored paper, such as the Wishita Searchlight, is to subscribe and pay for it, give it your full patronage in job work and insist that your friends do likewise.
See to it that the merchants and business men with whom you spend your money give to this paper their advertisements and in every thing which will tend to help support and masntain it. If we do these things we will build this paper to such proportions that every member of the race can point to it with pride and all will rejoice in knowing that we have such a noble and fearless advocate. Let us do these things.
For the Success of the race,
H. V. Plummer,
Miss Clara Johnson was surprised Tuesday evening, at her home, by the young peoples' T. P. & W. club. The evening was spent in music and games; all enjoying themselves very much. A fine lunch was served and all departed, well pleased

The crowning of the May ueen including hera tendants, maids of honor, pages and fairies and the braiding of the May-pole promises to be the crowning event in the way of entertainments.
There are times when it would seem that even the "fates" are against the Negro's advancement; and in conjunction with this imaginative construction one is led to believe that everything is working to keep the Negro back in the march of pro-fress. In almost every instance where a good word would mean much to our cause, that word remains unspoken for the simple reason we are lacking of friends, especially when and where they are needed. Should a national question arise of vital importance to the Negro, in nine cases out of ten the case is determined adversely to the race, because there is no one at court to defend or commend.
Without doubt this is a dark hour for the Negro and the safest and by far the best thing for him to do, is to watch and wait. No one capable of weighing the happenings of the past year can help from seeing a gleam of light peeping through the dark clouds. When it was first observed that Senator McLaurin was voting with the Republicans, though elected to the U. S. Senate by Democrats, those who were studying the political situation as it affected the Republicans and the Negro in South Carolina, knew it meant a great deal. It showed to the people of the country there must be something very wrong, or why would this man go back on his party and people?
Again, the Tilman-MeLaurin fiti- cuff in the Senate, on Washington's birthday goes to show, that the breach is widening instead of being healed.
Whichever way the matter terminates, it must result to the benefit of the Negro. If in the meantime the best thinking men of the race will only advise and insist on the masses to become tax payers and thus eligible to being registered voters, they will be in a position to have something to say when it comes to election time.
The Negro is not looking, neither is he hankering for office, but it is only right and just that he is allowed to have a hand in the selection of those who are to fill the offices and do all in his power to put in men who are not unfriendly to the progress of the race.—Charleston Messenger.
In the Rowlands prize oration contest, at Hamilton, N. Y., in which six seniors of Colgate University took part, Samuel Howard Archer' of Petersburg, Va., won the prize. Archer is a negro.
If the money which our hard working young men spend nightly and on Sundays in the clubs and in bar-rooms were to be used in provibing for them home comforts and insuring them against sickness, it would be a blessing to the race.—Reformer.

The Matrons' Contest at the Dodge Ave. Methodist Church Wednesday night, was a grand affair. The church was crowded from the door to the rostrum and the ladies received a most flattering reception. The contestants were in their prime and every one was heartily applauded. The judges said that it was so close a contest toat they had a hard time to decide who had won; but they finally agreed on Mrs. Mills, who was awarded the medal. Music for the occasion was furnished by Mesdames S. E. Patton, and Mr. W. H. Jones. Mrs. Lucy Anderson and Mjss L. Bartlett opened and closed the exercises. The participants were Mesdames, Thos. The sovereign is shown wearing the crown. The head, too, is smaller, with more of the bust showing, and King Edward is portrayed in uniform with the ribbon of the Garter.

The "Welcome Nugget" of gold found in Ballarat in 1858 weighs 2,019 ounces and was worth $42,000. The "Victoria Nugget," a magnificent mass of virgin gold welging 340 ounces, was found at the Bendigo mines in 1852. In ten years, from May, 1851, to May, 1861, $480,000,000 of gold was taken from New South Wales and Victoria to England.

Moral: Don't Give Up Your Seat.
A New Haven street car company being sued for damages by the executors of Nehemiah Candee, who was knocked off the running board of an open car and killed last summer, alleges that the deceased gave up his seat to a woman and voluntarily placed himself in a position of danger, and that the company is, therefore, in nowise responsible.

Threw His Canes Away.
Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., April 7th.
Mr. C. L. Smith of 309 Anne St., the Secy. of the Trades Council has written this startling statement for publication.
"I feel it my duty to make public the facts of my recent illness and recovery. I was very sick and sore, and had to walk with the aid of two canes. It was a very painful attack, but I don't know what it was. Some said it was Lumbago and others that it was Sciatica or Rheumatism.
"I was told to take Dodd's Kidney Pills, and began a treatment. After I had used one box I could walk with one cane, and after two boxes were used I could walk without any help. I kept on and three boxes cured me completely.
"I am now well and happy without a pain or an ache and I can very truly say that Dodd's Kidney Pills are worthy of my greatest praise."

sufficient vitality, an operation for ovarian troubles. Not a very cheerful prospect, to be sure. I, however, was advised to try Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and Sanative Wash; I did so, fortunately for me. Before a month had passed I felt that my general health had improved; in three months more I was cured, and I have been in perfect health since. I did not lose an engagement or miss a meal.
"Your Vegetable Compound is certainly wonderful, and well worthy the praise your admiring friends who have been cured are ready to give you. I always speak highly of it, and you will admit that is a good reason to do so." Mrs G. Bruce, Lansing, Mich. $5000 forfit if above testimonial is not genuine.

Free and Pastoral Life Lived by the
Patriarchal Fearless
It is a strange country of contrasts, this Bulgaria that people have so long watched as a danger spot. The peasant is a heavily built fellow, with a Kalmuk nose, if he happens to be pure bred from the original Samoyed stock, which is not likely. His language has become Slavic, which means a language in which "beefsteak" is "miphpteki" and "omelet souffle" is "omlet cuphle." The Bulgarian is a peasant or a soldier; he knows no other trade. As a farmer the sheep is all in all to him, food and clothing and companionship, says a writer in the Era. He lives in a hovel, does not understand why he should be taxed, and makes his women slave in the field. He is called close-fish, churlish and suspicious, and has some of the virtues that often go with those qualities. When Bulgaria became practically free of the sultan there were many Turks left in the country. These are gradually being crowded out, but there is still a mosque in Christian Sofia, and in the palace of the Sobranje, or Parliament, where the members have better accommodations than the lords of Britain on the Thames embankment, some twenty Turkish deputies always sit together and exert an influence that they never could do in their own land by voting always with the party in power. Every Saturday the members of the Sobranje are paid at the rate of fifteen francs a day, all in silver five-franc pieces. These peasant lawmakers knot it up in handkerchiefs, grin slowly and shake the jingling pieces playfully in one another's faces. They are playing at statesmanship yet, but fairly well, upon the whole.

Kabul Shopkeepers Warned.

Camping in Rocky Mountain.
Camping in the Rocky mountains is to be one of the inducements offered Colorado and Utah tourists this year. The idea was suggested by the inability of the Colorado resort hotels to care for the business and the popularity: of some experiments made in that direction by tourists last year.
Poom for South Africa.
A boom in the use of mechanical motors throughout South Africa will ensue immediately on the termination of the war. No real development of its boundless resources can be accomplished so long as the primitive method of transportation by ox wagon in districts remote from railways is adhered to.
Senator Warren's Early Days.
Senator Warren, although at present surrounded by all the luxury of the prosperous man, delights in telling stories of the days when his bed was a pine box filled with hay in an attic and when he had to get up every morning at 3 o'clock, feed the cows, split a lot of wood before breakfast, and then walk three miles to school.
Recular Method of Telling Time.
The natives of Liberia, in Africa, have no clocks. They take the kernels from the nuts of the candle tree and wash and string them on the rib of a palm leaf. The first or top kernel is then lighted. All of the kernels are of the same size and substance, and each will burn a certain number of minutes and then set fire to the one next below. The natives tie pieces of cloth at regular intervals along the string to mark the divisions of time.
Women Driving Out Men.
For the first time in the history of the trade in Kansas City women are now at work in the factories and bakeries making pies and bread. The oft-repeated statement that women are driving men out of their regular channels of employment is exemplified in the strike situation there. The proprietor of one of the biggest pie factories of the city, relating the result of his experiment in working women, said the change had been in every way satisfactory.
SOME WONDERFUL CROPS IN WESTERN CANADA.
The Territorial Government Reports Show Results Beyond Belief.
Regina, Assinibola, Canada, January 10th. At the Agricultural Statistics Braach of the Department of Agriculture for the Territories, reports are now being received from grain threshers throughout the Territories, for statistical purposes. The reports are somewhat delayed this year, owing to the extensive crop and the delay in getting it threshed. The Department of Agriculture is leading the way in a new departure, with regard to the collection of crop statistics. In the older provinces, crop estimates are based entirely on the opinion of persons interested in the grain business who ought to be, and no doubt are, well posted upon the probable yields. Still the reports are simply a matter of opinion, in which a mistake may easily be made. The Territorial Department, however, has adopted the system of returns of crops actually threshed, upon which to base their reports. The accuracy of the reports cannot, therefore, be gainsaid, for they represent a compilation of actual threshing results. In this connection, it might be mentioned that the Department is organizing a system of growing crop returns, which will be in operation next summer. The information thus obtained, with estimated increase, will be available for business men, banks, railway companies, and other interests which have to discount the future in making provision for the conduct of their business.
The crop reports already to hand show some remarkable cases of abnormal development. In the Regina district, many returns are given of crops of wheat running from 40 to 45 bushels to the acre.
J. A. Snell, of Yorkton, threshed 28,000 bushels of oats from 450 acres an average of 63 bushels per acre for a large acreage.
W. R. Kotherwell, of Abernethy threshed 2,650 bushels of wheat from a 50-acre field, an average of 53 bushels per acre.
In the Edmonton district, T. T Hutchings threshed 728 bushels of wheat from a ten-acre plot, an average of nearly 73 bushels per acre.
S. Norman threshed 6,950 bushels of oats from 60 acres of land, an average of 116 bushels per acre.
The publication of the actual yields or grain threshed will likely open the eyes of the people to the great capabilities of the Western Canadian prairies.

PROVIDENCE ROAD.
I have used St. Jacobs Oil for several years for lumhago and sprains and find it the greatest pain reliever before the public. I had a severe sprain on my right ankle which I received last week, and by using half a bottle of St. Jacobs Oil it is thoroughly cured. It acts like magic. All my friends in Gorleston, through it having cured me, are using it when occasions require, and say it is worth its weight in gold.
