FORT SCOTT SCHOOL FORT SCOTT SCHOOL On a recent trip to Ft. Scott, Ks., the writer made a visit to the Plazza School, which is the principal school for colored children in that city. It stands on a high, commanding hill, and off a distance, presents most picturesque and elegant view. The history of this school is the history of that city, so closely allied and blended together are the two. We doubt that there is any other colored school in Kansas that has such a proud history; we doubt that there is any other colored school in Kansas whose former pupils are so numerous, so broadly scattered, as one of this school. We almost venture the assertion that there is noown in Kansas above the third pass, and some of them too, that is not some colored person who at the time was a pupil in this historical school. We make the assertion that there is no colored school in Kansas that has a higher per cent of former pupils who are now engaged more honorable pursuits, and that has such a small per cent of criminality among its former pupils. This school stands forth as a bulwark of the progress of the colored race. Established by the govern-ment in 1860 on what was known as the old government plaza, many of the most prominent white business and professional men of that city are today not ashamed to own that they once taught the colored children there, until colored teachers could be found who were competent to take charge. The first colored teacher was a lady from Leavenorth, Ks., afterwadrs followed by colored men and women. This change and exchange of teachers took place without any recognized principal until 1880 when Prof. Chas. W. Bailer was appointed principal. Prof. Bailer was a recognized educator and brought the school up to a high degree of efficiency; he continued as principal till 1890, when he severed his connection to accept his present position as Railway Mail. Clerk. In 1885 Prof. Archie H. Wilson was secured and became assistant principal, which position he retained till 1890, when he was appointed principal, taking the place made vacant by Prof. Bailer. Prof. Wilson has filled that position since accepting the time which he served as captain of one of the companies in the 23rd Kansas Reg. of Vol. in Cuba; during his absence his place was temporarily filled by his capable assistant, Prof. E. J. Hawkins. Wilson is a disciple of Booker T. Washington and has added a mechanical department to the school and has thus increased the attendance of the boys and has now a greater attendance of boys than girls. In this carpenter department the boys are taught the rudiments of the trade, and there are on exhibition several nice peices of work which speak well for the school. The Plazza school has sent to the High School 135 pupils since 1880, or an average of more than 6 each year; out of which number 70 have graduated with honor and are now engaged in profitable employment. At present there are 10 in the class at the Plazza who aspire to enter the High school this year. The school is blessed with a corps of efficient and most competent teachers. The principle is Prof. A M. Wilson; assistant, Prof. E. J. Hawkins; Intermediate class teacher, Miss Sarah Maxey; Primary class, Mrs Francis Chinn. Speaking of the carpenter shop which he has established in the Plazza School, Prof. Wilson said "I am certainly a disciple of Booker T. Washington in solution of the Negro problem. Every city school and every district school in this country for our people should have a mechanical department of some kind and thereby foster mechanical ideas into our boys until idleness will be at a premium." The colored people of Wichita are honest, religious, and law abiding citizens. They believe in the supreme majesty of the law. They believe in, and fear God, and serve him, each, according to the dictates of his own conscience. They are not in accord with any trausient, political "grafter" and political "deal" workers. Any one who attempts or says that he represents even one of these honest people in this regard is a plain face liar. The colored people are above such things and such persons. POLITICS Candidates for sheriff are as thick as hops. Hon. Dan Boone is the logical, and proper person to nominate for county treasurer and we think that the people will say the same. Who'll be the successful candidate for the nomination for clerk of the District Court? Jno. M. Chain will be the next county clerk. Wichita, Ks., April, 23, '02. W. N. Miller, Learning of the appointment of Mr. Jeff Thompson, as a policeman, we wish to record our hearty approval. Mr. Thompson is the right man for that place and the Mayor of Wichata has endeared himself to the colored people by the appointment of Mr. Thompson. We wish to say that the colored people of this City are st the point low, where they demand that in the matter of appointments that only the best colored men for the place be appointed; we consider the appointment of Mr. Thompson a good one, and we venture the assertion that it meets the general approval af all the colored people. We are with the Mayor in this appointment and we are with Messers Luling and Schell, councilmen from our ward, for recommending such a good man. Wishing you, the Mayor and Councilmen success, Three Colored Voters. This letter is only a sample of the many which we have received but space will not permit us to print all. WALDEN ALRIGHT, TOO. WALDEN ALRIGHT, TOO. Chief of the Fire Department, A. G. Walden, reported to the Mayor and Council last Monday night that the new No. 3 fire house, 18th and Lawrence is near coopvetion. Mr. Walden stated that he needed three horses to equip that house. Under the personal supervision of our capable chief this house has been erected in the most modern and up to date manner, and when the apparatus is installed, the north end will have a most complete fire protection consisting of the present hose wagon and efficient colored linemen, a new engine and ladder. One thing characteristic about the chief is, that he does or what is done under his direction must be done well. The people of Wichita have learned this about him, and all know the result of his equipment of the new fire house. Walden is alright, too. Following the great democratic landslide in Kansas City this month, the city is visited by a most terrific fire. There is something significant to be noticed. The democrats up that way must be extremely "hot" articles. WANTED A good boy who desires to learn the printer's trade, and work in office. Apply at Searchlight office, 110 N. Main St. GUT OFF HIS KINFOLKS. Steps have been taken by the children of the late Col. John McKee the colored millionare real estate dealer of Pittsburg, Pa., te prevent the registration and execution of the deceased's will. Counsel for Abbie Syphax, Col. McKee's daughter, and Henry McKee Minton, a grandson, filed caveat with register of wills against the admission of any paper perporting to be the testament of the dead millionare. McKee was a life long member of the Presbyterian church. His will, made public, divides the bulk of his $2000000 00 estate to charitable uses under the control of Arshbishop Ryan and the clergy of the Roman Catholic church. His next of kin are cut off with a mere pittance. The Young Ladies Contest. The young ladies' contest at the A. M. E. church Tuesday night was a grand affair and a pronounced success. Each of the young ladies acquitted herself in a most admirable manner, which reflects much credit to themselves and their very capable instructor, Mrs. F. E. Moten, who labored faithfully to bring the class to a degree of efficiency. The church was filled with eager friends of the contestants and their instructor. The first on program was Miss Lela Crouch, subject, "The beast shall not be bound." Next came Miss Pearl Bradford, subject, "The burning of the World's Fair." In response to the next number Miss Winnie Ray came forward with the subject, "The saloon keeper's tear." In a clear voice and with well regulated gestures, Miss Ray recited. For the next Miss Dairy Bradford had for a subjvct, "A woman's cause and a woman's brave fight." Then came Miss Ethel Simpson, subject, "Personal responsibility." As the closing number Miss Blanch Alexander spoke from the subject, "The drunkard's outcast grave." On account o a severe cold Miss Sailie Rawles did not enter the contest; but spoke however to the subject, "Leave us alone." She capured the whole audience. We were proud to see those young ladies do so well; they spoke well enough to appear before a prince. They did well. Much credit is due to Mrs. F. E. Moten, who trained the class; she is competent and worthy of the support of the people of this city. Miss Daisy Bradford was presented the medal; and the music was fur- nished by the church choir. U. headquarters, at Galesburg, Ill., was for ten years one of the leading women there. Her husband, when living, was first President of the Nebraska Wesleyan University, at Lincoln, Neb. In a letter written from 40 Sixty-seventh street, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Fleharty says the following to Peruna: "Having lived a very active life as wife and working partner of a busy minister, my health failed me a few years ago. I lost my husband about the same time, and gradually I seemed to lose health and spirit. My daughter is a continued invalid, and we both felt great need of an invigorator. "One of my neighbors advised me to try Peruna. A bottle was immediately secured and a great change took place in my daughter's as well as in my own health. Our appetites improved very greatly, the digestion seemed much helped, and restful sleep soon improved us, so that we seemed like new women. "I would not be without Peruna for ten times its cost."—Mrs. Anna B. Fleharty. What used to be called female diseases by the medical profession is now called pelvic catarrh. It has been found by experience that catarrhal diseases of the pelvic organs are the cause of most cases of female disease. The woman was among the first of America's great physicians to make this discovery. For forty years he has been treating diseases peculiar to women, and long ago he reached the conclusion that a woman entirely free from catarrhal affection of these organs would not be subject to female disease. He therefore began using Peruna for these cases and found it so admirably adapted to their condition cure and have known become the most famous remedy for female diseases ever known. Everywhere the women are using it and praising it. Peruna is not a palliative simply; it cures by removing the cause of female disease. Dr. Hartman has probably cured more women of female ailments than any other living physician. He makes these cures especially useful and commending Peruna. Mrs. E. L.
