WALTER S. GATES
Regular Republican Candidate for Assembly
Seventy-second District
Judge Walter S. Gates, who is the regular Republican candidate for Assembly, 72nd District, is well known in this city.
He is president of the International White Cross Society of this city and also vice-president of the Clean Government League of California. Two years ago he was elected Judge of the Police Court (unexpired term) by a vote of over 65000.
He is a strong, clean, moral man with high ideals for the improvement of our government. He favors fewer and better laws and is a staunch advocate of progress, efficiency, economy, and clean government.
We need good, intelligent and broad minded men like Mr. Gates to represent us in or legislature, for law making is the most important factor in our government. With Judge Gates in office all men will have an equal chance, as he is greatly opposed to race segregation. He believes that men are created equal and for this reason all men should have equal advantages politically and socially.
Our candidate is a native son of California, being born in Pomona, Los Angeles County about thirty-five miles from this city. He is a member of the law firm of Gates & Randles, which has for a number of years last past carried on an active law practice in Los Angeles, California. He is a self made man having earned his way through the public schools of this city while working as a newsboy in the City of Los Angeles. He later worked his way through college and the University of Southern California. Due to his kindly consideration for all people, no matter of what color or race, Mr. Gates is very popular in business life. His election will mean another point and a noticeable one in favor of clean government and all who favor progress, fewer and better laws, will do well to vote for Walter S. Gates.
ANDREW W. FRANCISCO
Andrew W. Francisco, known all over the country as "Andy" is running for State Senate in the 37th Senatorial District. Andy came to Los Angeles in 1883 from Columbus, Ohio, where his father was widely known in the newspaper business. Mr. Francisco was, County Supervisor and Collector of Port. As Court Clerk for ten years and afterwards as Chief Deputy County Clerk, Fran-
The California Eagle
The big question in the Fourth District is who will go on with Delorey admitted by all to be the high man at the primaries. Mr. Delorey's wonderful strength is due to the fact that he has the largest personal following of ady of the other candidates, because of the stand he has taken on all questions of public interest and also to the fact that he is not a politician, never before having sought a public office. Mr. Delorey is a man whose heart and energies are with the wage earner, a man who has seen life from all sides, resulting in a ripe experience which in turn has made him intensely human, a man respected by all classes. He has always stood for equal treatment to all citizens regardless of race or creed. This idea will be carried out by him in selecting county employees. Every citizen so desiring shall have a hearing and anyone doing business with the county shall have direct and courteous treatment at the hands of the county employees.
For a thorough business administration characterized by economy in investing the people's money, elect E. J. Delorey, Supervisor of the Fourth District. Mr. Delorey has been endorsed by the City and County Civic League and the colored voters throughout the district will do well to give to him their undivided support as he is a man that truly stands for the masses for the great common people, and with him on this board of supervisors it is assured that all of the people without regard to race, color or creed, will receive, from his hands a square deal.
Mrs. Alice Hulsey in company with her niece, Cecil Lindley, of Joplin, Mo., arrived in the city Friday morning en route to San Francisco.
Mrs. Hulsey, who lived in Los Angeles until a few months ago, has been visiting relatives and friends in Kansas City, and now returns to her home in San Francisco.
The Kentucky Club will meet again August 24th at 710% East 18th street. The president desires that all members should be present.
Monday evening, August 21st, the Boy Scouts and School Girl drill and dance will be a feature at Normandie Hall. All young folk are invited.
GOVERNOR JOHNSON
LOUD IN PRAISE OF 10TH
CAVALRY
Telegram sent by Governor Johnson upon his learning of the recent memorial services in honor of the Carrizal dead of the 10th Calvary, was forwarded this week to Major Young of the 10th Calvary, care of Pershing's Base Headquarters, Mexico, to be permanently filed with the Regimental Records.
Telegram as follows:
San Francisco, Calif.
Hugh E. Macbeth, Los Angeles, California.
I profoundly regret that I am unable to be present with you at the memorial service to be held today for the Carrizal dead of the Tenth United States Calvary. I should have been more than glad to have added my mite of respect and praise for those brave Americans who sacrificed their lives for their country. These soldiers of the Nation typified the spirit of the Republic—the spirit of equal citizenship and of freedom. They made the supreme sacrifice that human beings can make—they yielded up their lives. They have won the gratitude of the whole Nation and they will ever live in that Nations memory. I mite with you citizens of Los Angeles today in honoring them. HIRAM W. JOHNSON,
Governor.
San Diego, San Francisco and Oakland
Mr. De Yoe as superintendent and manager of the Union League Club has been a large employer of Colored labor and probably employs more of them than any other one man in Los Angeles. They all speak of him in the highest terms as a man who stands for a square deal to all. And all who know him are very strong boosters for his candidacy and the Eagle strongly endorses the same and we ask the voters of the 62nd Assembly district to give him a hearty support.
JUDGE McDONALD FITTED FOR SUPERIOR BENCH
If all of the voters of Los Angeles county knew Judge Robert W. MacDonald of Pasadena, he would be elected at the primaries by overwhelming majority; and
REV. H. B. THOMAS.
The above letter from Rev. H. B. Thomas of Santa Barbara is self explanatory, the paper to which he refers for some reason failed to reach us, but we take it that it is a complimentary reference to his progress, etc.
Now in reference to the complaints of Rev. Thomas we want to say that we have tried to be eminently fair with all concerned, we have our ears ever ready to exploit the achievements of men and women for the uplift, the untoward things we eschew, we have when properly put never refused Rev. Thomas or any other citizen of Santa Barbara a hearing in these columns. The Eagle has a large circulation there and our clientage is entitled to the same, but we will not open our columns for personal attack. We have no knowledge of ever refusing to publish anything worth while; the forces opposing Rev. Thomas can likewise have a hearing if they so desire.
Now both sides accuse the Eagle of unfairness and both are very much wrong in their deductions.
They must understand that we can take no sides in these internal affairs; only on general lines. We are eternally against hypocrisy and deceit, against minority; we stand for the highest and best citizenship.
In so far as we know Rev. Thomas is alright, likewise the entire citizenship of Santa Barbara. If any of these parties transgress the laws or are guilty of wrong doing they are the

CAPRIETT
THE CALIFORNIA EAGLE
Things are pushing to the front along all lines in Wesley chapel. The pastor is in fine spirits and greatly encouraged as he is greeted from time to time with the splendid audiences at all of the services. Conference time is approaching and Pastor Kinchen is cheerful to find the membership co-operating to round out all reports for the annual Conference.
Last Sunday was truly a great day. The Benevolent society worshipped with us at 10 a.m. and listened to an inspiring message from the pastor on the "Genius of Small Things." At the evening service Mrs. Precott, the blind evangelist, delivered a wonderful sermon to a large audience.
The church was crowded on Tuesday night to pay tribute to the memory of Sister Dolly Lewis, who died in Kentucky two weeks ago.
The pastor will preach at 11 a.m. Sunday, and at 3 p.m. he will deliver a special message to the 200 or more young people of the Queen Esther Circle, of which Miss Vassie Williamson is president. His subject will be, "Girded But Not Know It." The church no doubt will be crowded Sunday night to hear the great choir, led by Prof Howard, render the cantata "Cavalry," or "The Seven Last Words of Our Lord on the Cross." Everybody is welcome to this great musical feast.
Birch Street Christian Church
On last Sunday Bro. W. G. Hopper preached two good gospel sermons to his listeners, one on "Covetousness" and the other on "Be Sure Your Sins Will Find You Out." In both he plainly showed the folly of such living and now secret or even open sin would finally result in one's downfall Bro. Hopper is well trained in the Christian faith and knows how to portray that doctrine to his people.
On the 24th inst. this Sunday school, as well as the Sunday school Bro. Hopper has at his Mission on Santa Fe avenue, will give a picnic for the children.
Just one more Sunday and we are planning to be in our new location at 14th and Birch streets. We will then dedicate our remodeled church and invite the public to share our joys.
The Endeavor services, which were held at the residence of Miss Gertrude Bright on Newton street on last Sunday, were a success and thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
PROVIDENCE INSTITU-
TIONAL BAPTIST CHURCH
Our church has taken on new life under the leadership of C. N. Moore and our Sunday school has increased from 5 to 25, and the B. Y. P. U. is also increasing in membership every Sunday evening. We raked $105.65 the first month of our new pastor's administration. Two new members Sunday, and we feel that God is blessing

on, and the church is proud of his pastor.
Bro. K. Payne, a young man on trial for ordination, preached on Sunday morning. Rev. Duvall and wife were with us at the morning service, and the Rev. Duvall preached for us Sunday evening.
The church has planned for a thousand dollar rally to take place on the first of November. The plan adopted for this rally is to have the church membership divided into four states, as follows: Alabama, California, Georgia and the state of Texas, each state with a governor. Any person not a member of the church can become a citizen of any of the states, if desired.
The state of Georgia will put on a grand entertainment on the 29th of August and will give away five dollars. Do not fail to purchase your ticket for the contest.
Look out for something greater an auto contest, something worth while—a big 5-passenger auto contest, and it will only cost $2.50 to enter the contest, and somebody is going to get a fine car. Tickets will be on sale at all the public business places conducted by colored men and women. The pastor will take the car our twice each week for exhibition. Do not fail to enter this contest as some one is going to get a fine car and you may be the lucky one. For further information call at the office, corner of Crocker and Agatha streets. You can register and pay your contest fee weekly.
Educational day was carried out according to schedule last Sunday and two large congregations were inspired and cheered through the efforts of these special services, Mrs. Gould, our own peerless soprano, Mrs. Pearl Lowery-Winters of Bakersfield, Mr. Anderson of San Francisco, and Messra Seapre and Copeland of this city were soloist for the occasion, and with our metropolitan choir rendered such selections as can only be heard at First church. Judges Wood and Findyelson delivered two practical and instructive messages, while Attorney Tyler presided with dignity and demeanor that is truly befitting a law student of Harvard. With the two class night accessions and the accessions on Sunday morning the membership roll went up four notches higher. The offering was commendable.
"Dollar money" time is fast closing. Conference will be here and the report must be made. The pastor is very solicitous that every member will so royally rally to this benevolent claim that the Conference minutes can be referred to with just pride and stand out as evidence that duty was truly performed. Will you who have not paid your "dollar money" kindly do so at once and thereby relieve your pastor of all unnecessary wory? Only three Sundays more.
The pastor will occupy the pulpit at both services Sunday. All are welcome to attend. Annual Conference convenes here at First church on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, September 6th, and continues with three sessions daily until Sunday night, September 10th. The public is invited to attend. Dinner and supper will be served at the church each day during Conference session. Grand public reception on Wednesday night, to which the people of Los Angeles and vicinity are invited. Don't miss the grand piano recital by Mrs. Kelly's pupils at the church Tuesday evening, August 22nd. Refreshments.

RACE MEN SHOULD PRACTICE LOYALTY
We have no antipathy for anyone connected with any paper, black or white semi-colored or otherwise, but the principle of true negro journalism is against ownership of such journals by other than members of the race. And the fact that a white man can procure negroes with any degree of intelligence to play second fiddle for him, to take chestnuts out of the fire for him, is an imposition on the race and this naturally indicates either disloyalty to race or sordid and mercenary motives.
The fact that negroes in this city who are loud in their manifestation for the race, will case around to this white man with his union shop, that your boys and girls are barred from, to have your job work done, in preference to two pure D negro shops don't speak well for your loyalty to race and your own institution. We know this to be true and we know some of the parties that are giving their work to this shop that has a great big line of demarkation against the race, only in so far as they can use is for self aggrandizement.

Small Talons on Beauty Points
"BEAUTY"
Beauty, considered by itself, is something which appeals essentially to our senses. It is of importance, then, if one would try to define it, to consider the form, form and colour.
The female form should show a soft and rounded contour, nudging both or angulate. The line which prevents the form to face up should show the length of a continuation of veins more or less pronounced.
The present report is under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer of the Bank of India.

The big Hiawatha Wedding Feast, consisting of a Chorus of about one hundred voices of California's best singers, together with the dramatic scenes, promises to be the best ever staged in the city of Los Angeles. Prof. R. G. Jackson of the Western University, Quindaro, Kansas, is a musical genius. He will arrive her ethe morning of August 23rd, will take the big chorus, train and dramatize the various characters for the Hiawatha Wedding Feast, which, together with other charming selections of the sweetest melodies, will be rendered at the Trinity Andoritium on the evening of September 5th.
Many of the leading Clubs of the city have already made reservations; and the calls are coming in all the while. Those who have seen the staging of the Hiwatha Wedding Feast, declare it to be the greatest scenical and pleasing stage affair that romance has arrayed o the eye of man. To love dreamers, it is a bubbling spring of laughter, and a rippling river of song. It is said that no other can stage it better than Prof. Robert G. Jackson; no better performers than those who are participants.
The following is a partial list of the clubs that have made arrangements for reservations:

OFF to San Diego for Athletic Meet.
After a course of training and physical examination by Dra. W. A. Tariston and Frank A. Gordon, on which the ligaments of the noted runner were thoroughly gone over, and to the treatment of these two successful surgeons, Mr. Drew says that he has never felt in better shape than at the present, and he therefore left Thursday for San Diego to compete in the athletic exercises at the Exposition on Saturday. He will run in both the 100-yard and 220-yard events, and says that he has no fears but that he will be able to run in the old-time form and easily capture these two events for the L. A. A. C., after which he will return to the city and leave next week for New York, where he will compete in the big national events, and meet again all of the crack runners of the world.
Among those who left this morning to attend the State Grand Temple at Oakland, August 22, were Mmen, M. Jennings, N. Willingham, D. Anglin and Missouri Busy.

WITH APOLOGIES TO A BURROWS OF STOCKTON
For write-up of the Grand Session of the G. U. O. of O. F. recently held at Marysville, we are in receipt of many letters from all over the State complimenting the same for which we are thankful.
But we owe an apology to our friend and Brother, A. Burrows, of Stockton, as we inadvertently got another in the office to which he was elected. Instead of H. E. Simpson being elected Grand Director, A. Burrows, of Stockton, was elected to that office. Mr. Burrows is one of the young and entericual members of the order and with his ideas for progress in vogue he will no doubt render the order signal services.
The meeting at the 14th St. school was intended to boost Dean at the expense of Woolwine. In this it utterly failed, it looked like a frame up and helped Woolwine immensely. Dean's generals failed him in this move and it resulted in a wave of sentiment that is helpful to Woolwine.
GREAT MEETING AT SANTA
MONICA
The mass meeting at Santa Monica under the auspices of the city and county civic league was a magnificent success, many visitors from L. A. being present, among which were W. H. Saunders, R. G. Lamar, G. P. Brown, A. L. Gaines, and J. B. Bass. The people seemed much enthused and joined with the slogan get together. G. W. Smith was the chairman and J. W. Mitchell secretary of the meeting, which was held at the C. M. E. church on Bay street.
The meetings billed for next week are varied and many, and it will take much effort for the various speakers to make the same. Mrs. C. A. Spear-Bass will take the stump the next ten days for election as Republican Committeeman from the 74th Assembly District.
The meeting at the Colored Workingmen's Club on last Tuesday evening was a hummer indeed; enthusiasm ran high. The following candidates spoke or were represented: Ralph Graham for District Attorney, W. M. Greenwood by proxy, F. H. Monster, Senator H. H. Lyons, H. H. Boone represented W. H. Booth, J. H. Langdon and Judge Craig. On next Tuesday evening the concluding meeting of the campaign will be held; the Black and Tan hand will play and Editor Bass will be the chairman. The Booth Campaign Committee up to date has absolutely passed up the Negro journals insolar as any publicity matter is concerned, and the Johnson Committee has not been very profile with publicity matter for the Negro journals, hence the dearth of information on the Senatorial situation.
The pin head Republicans who rage about somebody's loyalty will be the weights on the party's
THE CALIFORNIA EAGLE
The Eagle can never be accused of narrowness. We have given to every aspirant for political preferment a chance to get before our people if he cared to do so.
F. H. Monser, present assemblyman from the 74th assembly district, is one of the very best friends that the Negro race has ever had in the legislative halls of this State. On all matter affecting the rights of the colored people, the way he stood up for them you would think that he was one of them. Now some would have the colored people of the district to turn down a man like this. Watch and see. We want everybody to know that the colored people appreciate and will ever be loyal to their friends.
