Soldier Boys Given Royal Send Off ESTABLISHED 1879 LEADING RACE JOURNAL THE LARGEST AND BEST PHONE MAIN 1594 VOLUME 30 SELECT DRAFT MEN RECEIVE ROYAL, SEND OFF UNDER AUSPICES OF HARRIET TUBAN RED CROSS SOCIETY. The late and best of Sh. Towne and Avenue church was indecentate to the demand of recommending the people who turned out to the dratted men that turned out Wednesday evening by their presence at the reception which had been arranged by the Harriet Tuban Red Cross Association. The program which had been hurriedly arranged was one of the most memorable occasions ever held in this country and the valiant Red Cross Society led by its indignable president Mrs. Eliza Warner, the member ship of the society from head to foot were dressed in white and presented a patriotic line to the occasion and each one had been assigned to a special detail which was performed with clock-like precision. Each dratted man was met by a member of the Red Cross and escorted to seats of honor which had been reserved for him. The participants on the program were also met and escorted to the platform. Mr. Emma Hall & Hall assisted Elder Bartlett and Prof. H.D. Green led the musical songs. Church baker and minister with especial privilege and skill in black his former senior subordinate officer in the U.S. Army. Lester brought Rev. Glenn M. Millman secretary to the Mayor, was stationed and as he always does, minutely pleased in this occasion and then the mighity low South Carolina gall repugnation as an actor and also a number of the exception board, were humorously pleased the vast assembly by his imitable wit and humor and closed in a light of motion in oblquence which carried his attention with him. The last speaker was Lautt Jesse Kimbrough, who received a warm reception and in a sillyly bearing assertion that his tore was lightning and not speaking. He and he was ready to go to it. At the conclusion of those exercises the drafted men were escorted 15 the banquet hall in the chamber of the church, where the members of the Red Cross again demonstrated their prowess as they with neatness and dispatch served not only the drafted men but the visitors as well as neatly and prompt as if they were dining at the Palm Beach hotel to a sumptuous repast. A hotel came to a close one of most notable events which ever took place on the Palm Beach Coast. The following table will give the time and the departure of the drafted men. We are publishing the names of as many as we could locate, as follows: SEND-OFF FOR SELECTED MEN Departure of Colored Men Santa Fe Depot The California Eagle The interior of the library, with a large wooden desk, a chair, and a bookshelf filled with books. The walls are adorned with framed pictures and decorative items. We are constantly calling the attention of our readers to race enterprise where their patronage is solicited and their presence not objectionable. The cut that appears here speaks for itself—now if so much can just imagine if you please, what a race enterprise in this community be accomplished in the face of much opposition in so short a period properly supported would accomplish in a few years. Madam Cuffee, proprietor and operator of the Metropolitan Hair Store at 952 Central Ave., is adding daily to the beauty and fitness of her establishment; for the past few years she has supplied a large number of persons in this community with Halloween costumes of the latest and best varieties to be found in Los Angeles and so successful has she been in this line that she has decided to pay added attention to this department of her business, and by virtue of her experience at the head of the regalia department of the Pacific Coast Regalia Co., we predict that within a few years Madam Cuffee with the large and growing patronage among her people in this district, will preside over one of the largest regalia Sergio, Eminent Holley, Jod Sergit, Draud S. The world today is being reborn ideals are being shipped. Stars that once twinkled in the national constitution have lost their lustre and will disappear with the heap of civilization Ommens which long have governed are being buried beneath the tide successors. Doors, long fastened with the belts of prejudice are being imbedded by the key of Want. Want about the grasping of these opportunities. Shall we grasp them by the torcklow and court progress? The issue remains with us. What shall the answer be? To do this, however, efficiency must be the platform upon which we stand. The time is here now when it matters not so much as to the color of your skin or the texture of your hair. The question these times are asking is "Can you stand the test?" Young men—young women! What shall the answer be? Your hour has come. Success depends upon your response. Opportunity knocks and knocks hard. New situations have already opened and will continue to open wide their doors to the enterprising and efficient, be they black or brown. Preparedness, efficiency, and ability will give us an enviable footing in the new creation bound to rise from the ashes of this awful conflict. Shall we tango, fox trot and bunny hug these splendid chances away or shall we turn to tasks and duties of a higher and more progressive nature? We shall win or lose just as we choose. The gate stands ajar. Opportunity's arms are open wide, her voice calls "the efficient and prepared may enter." Shall we enter in? What shall the answer be? "Life is striving, life is a race. Over a course both hard and long; Toward attainment set your face. Quit yourselves like men, be strong." REN. P. C. We certainly appreciate the patriotic utterances contained therein. DR. H. D. PROWD ON VACATION Dr. H. D. Prowd, the scolarly pastor of the Second Baptist Church, who after laboring ardently in this field for more than a year left two weeks hence for the northern part of the State, where he was to rest and recuperate. Dr. Prowd writes back that even though he is absent his heart is with his flock here. He also states that he is being cordially received, and royally entertained by northern friends and that he is favorably impressed with the progress being made by race men in that section, but laments the fact that our people in the North are church slackers. The California Eagle believes that Dr. Prowd's visit to the north will mean a great spiritual awakening for those who hear him. A. A. LEAGUE MEETS AT Y. M C. A. Through the public-spiritedness of Secretary T. A. Greene, Y. M. C. A. under the auspices of the All-American League, those who attended services there Sunday at 3 p.m., were much benefited by listening to the very eloquent, Mr. George D. Roberts, Representative of the Federal Reserve Bank, Twelfth District, speak on the merits of the United States of America Liberty Loan. Mr. Roberts establishments in all Los Angeles. It was her special aptness for this work that played Madam Cuffee, the only race woman ever employed by this company, foret lady to preside over her more favored white sisters. Madam Cuffee is also an expert wig and toupee maker and in short anything that is made of hair, having learned this art at Mason and Caesar, 9th and Broadway, the largest establishment of its kind on the coast. She is also a graduate of Madam C. J. Walker's college of hair culture. Prof. Cuffee, the husband of Madam Cuffee, who was before coming to Los Angeles, pharmaceutical clerk in a large New York establishment, is a valuable assistant to Madam Cuffee in the manufacturing department of her business. From time to time we will present such enterprising members of the race engaged in the various business walks to our reading public, hoping that through this medium, a greater spirit of pride will be awakened among us and that like the Jews, we will be able to play our role in the financial world and in this fashion take our place with other peoples of the earth. especially emphasized these features of the Liberty Bond. 1. Acceptable by banks as collateral to loans on a more favorable basis than any other class of securities. 2. Almost as liquid as currency, already being accepted in payment of accounts contracted for ordinary commodities. 3. The premier investment of the world in point of security. 4. Available in small denominations, thus making for wide distribution and popularizing of issue. 5. Least expensive. 5. Issued in a patriotic cause, thus appealing to "millions of men." The speaker held the attention of the audience with close attention. He was followed by Mr W E. Easton, who afterwards presented Mr H E. Macbeth, State President, whose appeal stirred the already much convinced audience of generous applause. Professor H D D Greer, Secretary of the State League, and President of the Westside Branch, in his usual eloquent voice, spoke in corroboration of the speakers that had preceded him. Professor Greene also spoke favorably of the preceding speeches and made an earnest appeal for funds to roof over the swimming pool and make other necessary additions to the convenience of the attendants, especially the minors, of the rare facilities of the Y M C A. He informed the gathering that in the very near future there would be an "old style spelling match" conducted by an "old establishments in all Los Angeles. It was her special aptness to Coffee, the only race woman ever lady to preside over her more taste. Maolam Coffee is also an ex short anything that is made of Mason and Caesar, 9th and Bro of its kind on the coast. She is Walker's college of hair culture. Prof. Coffee, the husband of coming to Los Angeles, pharmace establishment, is a valuable assist-facturing department of her business. From time to time we will p of the race engaged in the various public, hoping that through this pride will be awakened among us able to play our role in the finance our place with other peoples of the 'style teacher," who with their little Blue-back speller could spell against the world. The Secretary also stated the campaign for funds would not be a begging scheme, but a campaign for membership, giving something for something of a tangible nature. Adult memberships are but $5 for a whole year and $3 for boys. This is cheap compared with the $15 membership of the white associations, who have only one more privilege i.e. billiards. The principal speaker of the occasion, Representative Roberts, paid a very high compliment, both to the vision and the patriotic work of the All-American League, speaking for its influence with all constituted authorities throughout the City, State and Nation. We are sure that the speeches sold bonds as many afterwards, expressed a desire to have them, and Secretary Green called on each one present to constitute himself a committee of one to talk Liberty Bonds. CARD OF THANKS To the many friends who were constantly attentive to our dear mother, during her long illness, and who by their words of comfort and unlimited deeds of kindness showed her, even until death, and by their many magnificent floral offerings, which made her passing the more easy for us to bear; to the Rev H. B. Davis, pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, of which she was a member, and through him to the members and friends of said church, who were so loyal, so patient and who remain with us even until the end came, to the friends and neighbors in the community in which she lived, and to all who were so wonderfully helpful to us during her long illness, we wish to extend our sincere thanks. Machine for hire at all hours M. T LAWS THE CALIFORNIA EAGLE SAN DIEGO NEWS. The revival at the Mt. Zion Baptist church, conducted by the able Dr. N. T. Lane of Houston, Texas, has been a grand success. It has helped Mt. Zion, both financially and spiritually. Dr N. T. Lane has made many friends in San Diego and declares he is coming back again. The Sunday-school of which Mrs. M. A. Hayden is superintendent will give a grand rally on the 4th Sunday of this month. Each class will report the amount they have raised for the Sunday-school. It was reported in last week's issue that one of the entertainments was not well attended. The writer being in Stockton at the time and unable to personally attend, dreamed that it was a failure —but the reports turned in on the 4th Sunday will decide the success of each class in a general way. All are cordially invited to come out and see results for themselves. The Missionary Society is getting along nicely under their new president, Mrs. J. Langley. Misses Annie and Exonia Mulholand are in Los Angeles, stopping with their sister for an indefinite time. The little Simbeam Band, under the supervision of Mr. C. E. Norwood, is doing a good work. They will meet Friday p.m. The Boy Scouts sermon was preached at the Mr. Zion baptist church Sunday afternoon. The Sunday-school B. Y. P. U. Hattie entertained at limbochot, Monday afternoon. Rev Dr N. T. loree, of Houston, Texas; Mr. J. Divis of Los Angeles; Mrs. L. C. Collins of Bakersfield and Mrs. C. E. Norwood of San Diego. Miss Hattie Jordan of Riverdale is still in San Diego with friends and enjoying it immensely. She cannot decide when she will return home. The Heath Jubilee Chorus, composed of members and friends of all the colored churches in San Diego, is making its mark. They meet for rehearsal every Monday and Thursday evening. They were invited out to sing for the White Christian Church, but Past, Heath thought it best not to accept any invitations at this time, as the Chorus will make their first appearance in public on Thanksgiving. The members of the Chorus are becoming very interested, and regret to miss a meeting. Some who have enlisted in the Chorus are a little slothful, but we are asked to take a more active part, as there is a time coming when all will want to take a part, and it will then be only to those who have been faithful to the end—so, therefore, a hint to the wise should be sufficient. The Negro Woman's Council of San Diego is doing remarkably well. Mrs E D. Hudson is president. The women are all piedging their hearty support. Our motto is "Loyalty"—it is the key to success for the Negro race—joint in and help us. Mr. James Warren of 2014 Martin avenue, is on the sick list this week. Mrs. John Wilson and family have returned to the valley. Mrs. Georgiana Williams left for the valley for an indefinite stay. The "Fathers' Chamber" will give an entertainment at Masonic Hall on Halpowe'en night. Speaking by three prominent citizens. Refreshments and supper will be served. Dancing after program and dinner. Admission 15c. President, Chapman; Secretary, S. Conway. The revival at MuZion church has stirred the town and mary have found the way to church who never knew it before. welve have been added to date; two for baptism. The meeting will close Thursday night at the white Baptist church with a great service and baptizing. Religious enthusiasm is at the highest pitch. Don't let the preacher take away your religion when he goes, but keep it with you. The Ladies' Council held a grand session Sunday at the hall. They are handling the questions of the hour. The president is a live wire. Mr. and Mrs. Truman have returned from the valley, but expect to spend the next year on a ranch. Mr. E. T. Anderson in brother-in-law of Rev. C. Williams, who has been prospecting in Mexico, is in the city and thinks he will stay a while. Mt. Zion was taxed to its utmost capacity Sunday night. The B, Y, P, U, of the Mt. Zion church broke its record Sunday in attendance and collection, there were 75 present and $3 collected. The recitation by Miss Jamie Brown was very good. Mr. Norman, the Grand Master of the U, B F, of State, addressed the union on the subject of putting one's religion into politics. Members of the chorus that Mr. Heath is getting up are asked to come out to practice. MONROVIA, CAL. Mrs. a. M. Martis is still on the sick list. Messie. Carl Smith and I. Lawrence Henderson were present visitors to the city Sunday. Mr. ato Mrs. E. L. Adams entertained a few of their friends at a Halloween party last Wednesday evening. Those present were Misses M. Clark, M. Slaw, H. Robinson, Lia Shaw, and C. Adams, Mrs. N. Walters and J. Kinzy, Misses N. E. Clark, M. Keary, I. White, D. Johnson and L. Leonard. Delicious refreshments were served in abundance. The concert at the Second Baptist church Friday evening was a grand success. Receipts $9. Mrs. Ellen Beeks spent Sunday in Morrovia visiting her father, Mr. J. M Mattis. A great rally was held at the 24 Baptist church Sunday p.m. when Rev. Clark, pastor of Zion A. M. E church a soul stirring sermon from Epistles 6:11. "Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wives of the devil." The service was unusually inspiring. The speaker brought out many beautiful points of interest that were beneficial. The choir was fine. Collection, $52. Tuesday evening Rev. G. W. Reed of Riverside, Cal., delivered a lecture to the Sunday schools, B. Y. P. U.'s and C. E.'s Devotional exercises conducted by Jessie Kinzy. Subject, "Purpose of the Sunday school and Y. P.'s meetings." He urged the teachers to be well qualified to teach; that they must be of good character, and have the ability from both a learned and a spiritual standpoint. All present declared they had been greatly benefited. Mrs. Ada Keys of, Los Angeles is the house guest of Mrs. E. Woods. Another disgrace to the race and ministry. Unfair use of the word, "Woman" by notoriety - seeking quack. By Jessie Kinzy. In the person of a quack preacher, who roams about Monrovia and spends most of his time telling some obnoxious tale about a woman, is the one who has become a perfect nuisance and disgrace to this community. He often waits for an opportunity to fill some pastor's pulpit to make these defamatory remarks, thereby becoming a disgrace to the rostrum and the pulpit. He has no regard for honesty —for a clean life, nor the truth! He continually moves from one place to another to avoid paying "Don't suffer from train headaches" When traveling, attending a Theatre or some Social Function, or if Shopping, don't forget to have DR. MILES' - Anti - PAIN PILLS with you. They are invaluable for Headache and all other Pains. 25 Doses, 25 Cents. IF FIRST BOX IS NOT SATISFACTORY, YOUR MONEY WILL BE REFUNDED. DRING DESIRED RELIEF. "I have used Jin Miles Anti Pain Pills for some time and find them an invaluable remedy for headache. I have always taken great pleasure in recommending them to my friends, being confident that they will bring the desired relief. I am never without them and use them for all attacks of head, knowing that they will not disappoint me." MRS. W. H. PENSON. West Haven, Conn. He continually bongs of his ability to present in Greek and Latin yet he cannot speak English correctly. Such a lover as this should never be allowed, behind a pulpit. Good, clean, honest ministers—avoid having such quirks in your pulpit, thereby proving to them that they are not being upheld in their low, degraded, rutten life. With the return of the many Fresno folks from their vacation, society has again resumed itself. The musical extravaganza — "Mother goose Rhymes," as presented by sixteen kiddies under the personal direction of Mrs Jae, L. Clark, was a decided success. The A. M. E. church was crowded to excess and the audience was very generous in its applause. The solo by Percy Best, and the singing of several popular songs by Musi Alma Saunders were among the notable features of the evening. Mrs. Win, A. Bigby an her third daughter, Miss Azeal Gwendolyn, will soon leave for Sacramento, where she will be the guest of her sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, who now have the pastorate of St. Andrews A. M. E. church in that city. Mrs. Bigby is paying a deferred visit to Spokane and will remain in the the capital city as long as fancy dictates. Madame Lillian J. Davis, wife of the eminent pastor of the 2d Baptist church, who has recently returned from a three months' tour of the East, was the incentive for one of the largest and most brilliant musicale receptions society has seen in years. The Coolidge-Taylor Glee Club presided over this elaborate affair for their president to show, if possible, the deep esteem and respect in which they held her. The musicale, under the tutelage of Miss Ann Harris, had its setting in the auditorium of the church and the banquet ablew were spread in the banquet hall. The program was excellent, especially James L. Clark, our piano genius whose wonderful interpretation of several difficult numbers from Schubert was the very embodiment of art. Mrs. Davis wore a striking creation of black Persian lace over a pea green, messilaine, embellished with velvet of a deeper shade, and carried a bouquet of immense chrysanthemums. The patronesses were Mesdames James H. Bent, James L. Clark and Miss Leona Watkins.
