Do you know how the Washington Post agreed President McKinney to appoint him to a cabinet position, but he refused by saying he was not a politician but a teacher? How many of its D's, L's, D's and I's in our race would refuse an offer of that kind? But he wanted to teach his race and he wanted to teach his position.
Phil Washburn had the key that unlocked the door of power and knew how to work but many others of the race have the education, but do not know the combination. But few people know what hunch Dr. Washburn was connected with. When anyone would ask him has an own way to do it, I was born in Virginia.

Two splendid conversations were present on Sunday at the services of this church. The pastor continued his series of sermons on the lives of the great man of Moses the Bible and preached on the life of Moses. The practical lessons drawn from the sermons are very helpful and many have been the expressions of appreciation on the part of the congregation. The ladies of the church are paring to serve the best dinner on Thanksgiving day they have, ever served. Most of the choirs are preparing a concert for the night of Thanksgiving. The children of the church under the direction of Mrs. Anderson are preparing to render a program on Friday night the 25th, and it promises to be a very enjoyable affair. The pastor is always invited to work with this congregation.

Last Sunday was a great day at Wesley M. E. church. At 11 am the pastor preached a very effective sermon on the "Gospel in Epitome". In the evening the choir rendered in a very acceptable manner the great cantata, "Calvary". A very large audience was delighted with the high standard of the services.
Besides regular collections up to the average, our loyal people land on the table $105 for painting the church. At 11 am this Sunday the pastor will preach on "Why the Colored People of Los Angeles Should Vote to Free Our Quality From the Saloon". In this coming under the auspices of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society memorial services will be held at the honor of Sister Cotchia Tillis and another John Johnson and perhaps others.

The Archives, published at St. Louis, go to our desk all dressed up in a new suit and size larger than the old, herefore worn, and bright and newy as ever, who in fact demostrates real progress, and we congratulate this publication on the same.
The practical demonstration for firstly shows the Colored men who have been given on to serve their duty in many of its various branches, with their integrity and eagerness to question almost this been a revolution to the process of their service, and to call it not me, for the very good reason that patricion with the Army and of education is hereditary from the Empire. On Tuesday the "No Saoobi" entrance will have its super in this city at the hands of the people, and again the city of geles will have the opportunity of entering itself on this all question. The campaign has been rather quiet, with the Dc offensive and the Wets have been content with a gum shoe pr and the people await as to what the verdict will be.
On Tuesday the "No Sawdust" committee will have its supreme test in this city at the hands of the people, and again the city of Los Angeles will have the opportunity to test itself on this all important question. The campaign has been rather quiet, with the Brys on the offensive and the Wets have been content with a gum shoe propaganda and the people await as to what the vortex will be.

Reading the diaries just now with the account of the libel suit in which E. T. But it looks to us to the contrary that Mr. Earl is a public spirited citizen who does not mind giving of his means to clean up the city, if need be. Hon. Martin's Maden, Private Secretary to Gov. Wm. D. Stephens, was in our city for barely two days, but during this short stay he was able to transmit to others vital to the State. APPRECIATION
On bigail of our minister or editor, the editor of this paper to express our best appreciation for the special honor we feel by beaming her on her parish life member of the Sopora family, and while recalling the joy of the wondry personal, we recognize the spirit in which it was grown, and in this section of women are giving in practical demonstration that, effort for, for humanity and its spirit, may not be in there are always those on guard to see to it that true merit a will have its reward. And, composed as this organization is grazed and unseldom devotion to do the things worth while, for the future will outshine its remarkable progress in the past objects for which it strives.
On behalf of our mission to educate, the author of this paper desires to express our hope and motivation for the spiritual honor of terror given by one being born in a temporary life member of the Superior Truth Club, and while believing the horrors so widely impermanent, we cannot但但 to recognize the truth to which it was written, and in this section the noble bond of women, are urging us in practical demonstration that, after all, effort for good, for humanity's its spirit, may not be in vain, for there are always those on good to see to it that true merit and worth will have its reward. And, composed as this organization is of broad-gauged and unselfish devotion to do the things worth while, progress in the future will outshine its remarkable progress in the past of the objects for which it strives.

SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH
Maple Ave.
A LONG TIME BETWEEN SLAPS
Last Sunday morning there was a very appreciative gathering in the Sunday School. Mr. Groves, the superintendent, gave a most helpful and instructive talk on the lesson, which was afterwards driven home by the Custor. At the opening of downside service, the hearts of the people who littered to Custor is the success of course led the congregation to most inspiring hymn of praise, each of the educes was filled with correct chapels, not were they chapels, for the very mention of the total prepared them for a celebration of retiring from the presence of the Lord. As, 40g9 "O Zion, that brings good tidings, get thee up into the lush mountain; O Jerusalem, that brings great tidings, hit up your voice with strength, hit it up your arm, afraid say unto the cities of Judea, the Good God. Dr. Prowitt point out the church of the church, they beast the mouthpiece at foot, the said could not be otherwise, the church being the only agent for the spreading gospel. He drew attention to the position and constant attention of the church, as that of living above the world. And showed in his citing remarks, the many benefits to which it is the privilege of the Christian to go. The B A P U is taking off new life. The President, Mr J E Prowid, is requesting 10 members to come out at 6 o'clock in stead of 6.30. His purpose is, that the beautiful songs in the new book might be gone over and thus become familiar to all.
In the future, the Negro-hating element of Montavigis' white citizenship will be more valuable when they have muses or race friendliness over the progressive of the Colored citizens of Montavigis. On the 17th of November, Palo, Mrs. Selie Clower, the nineteen-year-old Clower, one of the trainees in the Montavigis Public Schools, became cultured over a report that little Bessie Malone, aged 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Beine of Montavigia, had struck the little Clower boy, aged 4, who had called Bessie shabba a nigger. Atter Bessie had thoroughly trounced the little Clower boy for calling her nigger, the little little boy ran home and informed his mother, Mrs. Selie Clower, who came out of her house into the street to administer placing to Bessie Mrs. Clower stapled to Bessie.
According to the testimony of eye nurses in Valentine's Court, department 20 of Superior Court, the night lasted ten minutes and when it wound up, Mrs. Clower was beging to settle history hands, at the near backing house, to take Bessie off of her On Monday, this week. Judge Malcolm handed down his decision to the street that night. Clower had no right to slip. Bessie is gardless of the lips words which she claimed Bessie gave her after whipping her little boy. The Judge felt that the one slap who in his Clower had given Bessie was at least worth $2850 to Bessie and gave indement accordingly.
Two very important subjects will be discussed by Dr. Prowd this Sunday. At 10 o'clock, attention will be called to "The Greatest Bible Narrative" and at 7:30 p.m. "The Other Narrative." All are invited and urged to come early.
[Attorney Hugh E. Macbeth repre-
sented the plaintiff and Messrs. Earl
and McLaughlin represented the de-
mand in Mrs. Clower. From later
reports there is going to be a long
time between slams in Monroe.

SAN FRANCISCO CITIZENS FAIL.
ED TO GIVE LIBERTY BOYS
SEND OFF.
From a communication which we have received from one of our subscribers in San Francisco, it they unmistakably the citizens of that city for their failure to give to the colonized conscripts the 'honors' to which they were due, and its up by saying that had it not been for Lester Mapp and Gillie Richardson, proprietors of a Barbita Conservation hall, the boys would have had absolutely no membrane of a farewell from home.
The Eagle would rise to enquire what was the matter with the public, spirited Colored citizens of San Francisco. Where were the pastors, the lawyers, etc.? For the smallest possible honor they could bestow upon themselves would be to see that these boys had the same consideration which the boys from all over the country received from the folks at home or their departure, and after all has been said and done, the two men above mentioned, Messrs Mapp and Richardson, are entitled to the highest credit for their patriotism and racial interest.
CAMP LEWIS NOTES
By Raymond Isum
The Colored contingent arrived here Wednesday, Oct. 31st, at 6:30 a.m. After being checked off they were matched to their quarters amidst cheers and good natured kidding from the white drafts, who lined up to welcome them. The Colored-slads were assigned to three companies, the 49th, 50th, and 51st, in the 13th battalion, 166th depot brigade. Most of the Los Angeles boys are in the 49th company, under Lautenants Smith and Green, of the regular Army.
Uniforms have been issued to most of the boys in the 49th and 50th companies and the boys make a fine display in Uncle Sam's clothing.
Some of Los Angeles' prominent young men had a taste of real army life Friday, when they were assigned to K. P. (Kitchen Police). When assigned the young men had visions of some sort of guard duty With authority and display, but later they learned that the duties, consisted of scrubbing table tops, mopping the floor, washing dishes and pots, chopping wood, and last but greatest, peeling potatoes. After finding that they had been stung the boys entered into the work in a spirit of fun. Those a signed to K. P. were Edw. Wilkinson, Alva Garrott, John Gray, and Raymond Isum.
Most of the boys of the 49th have had their first "shot in the arm" (typhoid inoculation and vaccination) and several are suffering from the after effect.
J. P. Daniels, of Dist. 11, Los Angeles, has been appointed acting 1st Sergeant of the 49th. Sergeant Daniels has had previous military experience. Henry ("Hank") Brooks, formerly of Huntington Beach, arived Saturday from Kansas City, where he has for some time been physical culture instructor in the public schools. Brooks has been assigned to the 50th Co.
The boys got their first taste of Washington weather Friday and Saturday when it rained in torrents for about thirty-six hours. Quite a number of the boys spent Saturday afternoon and Sunday in Tacoma and Seattle.
The Y. M. C. A. is doing a great work here for the boys. Many of the Colored boys are regular visitors at the different departments of Y. M. C. A.
At the conference held in Barracks 46 Saturday, Lieut. Green complimented the boys on the great improvement made in drill since the first day. He said that the Colored boys were apt scholars, that all eyes were on them and that he was proud to be their Lieutenant.
A spirit of good fellowship exists between White and Colored boys. Many mixed crowds of Colored and White boys playing - football and baseball were noted Saturday.
The baseball teams of the 364th (White) and the 49th (Colored) hooked up in a seven inning game Sunday. The score closed in a tie, 7 to 7. Mooney pitched two innings, but was too strong for the class he was in, so he retired.
Anderson Spain, of Los Angeles, arrived Monday and was assigned to the 51st.
Nineteen boys from the 49th were rejected on account of physical disabilities, and left for their respective homes Tuesday morning. Those rejected were: Ernest Sear, Edward Stockett, Robert Mason, Edward Price, Theo. Bramlett, Firmen Griffin, John Diggs, Ervin Brinson, S. H Henderson, B. L. Shupley, E. W. Allen, S. D. Bynum, John Fair, Arthur Scott, B. B. Donato, and Hugu Barton.
Jimine Thompson, whose ability as an entertainer is well known in Southern California, is a mighty headliner at the amusement hall and the Y. M. C. A.
A number of Colored motorists from Seattle and Tacoma, visited the camp Sunday.
Thirty three of the boys from the both were issued to guard duty Monday night. Among them we not of our old friend, Hank Brooks, the cartographer.
W. H. (Mike) Taylor, prominent among the younger social set of Los Angeles, is acting supply sergeant under Sergeant James H. Parks (White), formerly of Los Angeles. Mike is making good and is in line for the position when Sergeant Parks is then retired.
A number of the boys have been appointed temporary corporals and captains. If they make good the positions, will be permanent.

REAL ESTATE MEN
Several of Them Operating Under the New Lak Without License
There are no doubt many persons in Los Angeles who are not aware of the fact that a new book made its appearance in this city a few days ago, different from any that has ever been printed in this state, notwithstanding its many years of civilization. The book referred to is a Directory complying about four thousand names of the bonded and licensed real estate men in the state. This book was made necessary on account of the new law passed by the last Legislature, effecting the first of last August, making it compulsory for all operators in the real estate business, that is, selling or renting houses on a commission basis, to give a bond in the amount of one thousand dollars, or by, imprisonment in a County bail or State bail, that a prominent real estate operator in Los Angeles, names tail to appear, and according to this Directory, they have tailored to comply with the laws of the state and community, which is not only an instrument to their yellow men enclosed in the same line of business, but is unpatriotic to the general public.
The following is an extract of the law referred to.
Section 1. It shall be unlawful for any person, co-partnership, or corporation to engage in the business or act in the capacity of a real estate broker or a real estate salesman within this state without first, obtaining a license therefor.
See 2. A real estate broker within the meaning of this act is a person, co-partnership or corporation who or a compensation sells or offers for sale, buys or offers to buy or negotiates the purchase or sale or exchange of real estate, or who, for compensation negotiates loans on real estate, offers or offers to lease, rents or places for rent or collects rent from real estate or improvements thereon for others as a whole or partialocation.
The Kentncky Club will hold its next meeting on Nov. 22, at the residence of Mrs. J. Fouce, 1544 E. 40th street. Take Hooper avenue car; get off at 40th street; go east three blocks to the number. A program will be rendered by Mrs. McRonald. All Kentncky invited.
