Unlike our brothers at American Lake we enjoyed the pleasure of coming home, so our friends could behold our spectacular paraphernalia and tell them our actual experiences as they were in progress, on which we were glad to receive personal, compliments—flattering and otherwise. I hold that I have a smile that never will wear off even if I met the Kaiser face to face, and he, said on my body you have the right spirit. For three years Rev. S. B. Danby has labored diligently among us, both as a minister and a teacher. Aside from improving the church parish nage, Rey, Conquest, with the aid of Dr. Jones of Los Angeles, has conducted the greatest revival ever held in this valley. "Truth from his lips' prevailed with double sway, and fools who came to scoff remained to pray." During the two weeks' revival 55 persons were converted; 27 of these converts have become members of St. Paul's M. E. Church making a total of more than 30 new members for the new conference year. Six others have joined the A. M. E. Church at Bowies and a large number of the others have enrolled in churches in Fresno. Sunday, Dec. 7, there will be a rally and Baptism. This, we believe will be in keeping with past successes. OLDEST MAN IN U. S. DIES Brooklyn, N. Y., Nov. 23. John W Johnson, an ex-slave—who is said by some of his friends to have been the oldest man in the United States, was buried Wednesday, Nov. 14, in St. John's cemetery. It is claimed Johnson was 116 years old when he died on Monday, Nov. 12 in Kings county hospital of pneumonia. He was known as 'Prophet John' because of his predictions, which were frequently borne out. Johnson predicted the election of Hyland for mayor of New York City, and the day after caught a severe cold and was taken to the hospital. He rapidly developed pneumonia. Speaking of the professional Negro who is always harping that he wants to do something for "his" people, and who as a rule, does everything else except work, it is a cunning that he must live, and there is no question but that he will grasp any opportunity which presents itelf for the mumble dollar. --- Too much credit cannot be given to the Association for Advancement of Colored People for the great work it has done and is doing in defense of human rights in this country. It is said that in the recent segregation case which terminated in a verdict, before the U. S. Supreme Court, that the printing bill alone of benefits, etc., through the various stages of the trial amounted to twenty two thousand and two hundred dollars, this is to say nothing of the very best legal talent which appeared in the case without cost to the Association. IT TAKES OUR WOMEN TO DO THINGS. Since the memory of man rammeth not to the contrary, our own personal knowledge efforts in various forms have been made by different sources in this country to raise the mortgage on the Frederick Douglas home at Acacia, Arizona, and preserve it as a lifting memorial for the lastest Frederick Douglas. All of these efforts came to naught, however. A little more than a year into the National Federation of Colored Women's clubs undertook the task, and they report tiday that they have practically raised the mortgage. And, therefore, they are certainly entitled to the praise and appreciation of the Colored folk of this nation. A man who lives in a community and carries around with him a lot of credentials telling the people of his worth, will bear watching, for the simple reason that if he really cuts any eye the people will find it out regardless of his letters. How did Santa Monica a man named Beretto could not see how presenting his candidacy to the colored voters through their own papers would help him. The other fellow running for the same office did. Result: Beretto, who thought he had a cinch, loses by 18 votes. Now he is a sadder but wiser man. In this community we have striven to produce a journal for all the people, thoroughly cosmopolitan and democratic, and we have never bellyached for support. Herbert Burnett of Co. 50 furnished launches aplenty in a modologue "Twenty Minutes of Ministrolys," by boys of the 16th and 50th companies, was the lead timer of the evening. Those in the sketch were: Percy Venable, interpilot; James Thompson, lead; Wiley Dent, tenor; C. E. Baugham, barbone; William J. Thomas, bass; Y. E. Bynum, end man; E. Hardy, end man. The members of the club wish to thank the public for their encouragement of adding Pons, and the church of Pons, as well as Pons, as well as Pons. There is so portable differences in things around here now than even last week. Monday and Tuesday, after noon we (the 1656 Depot Brigade) went on parade and each day we marched off the parade ground. Cap- Scott said, "Very good, boys, very good!" Tuesday night, after support, our leavers gave us several hum- dred cards with addresses of persons in Los Angeles who will correspond with any of our boys that will write them. Wednesday was a busy day. Some of the boys went to Tacoma, one played baseball, while the rest decorated the dining room for Thanksgiving. The churches of Tacoma gave a dinner (Thanksgiving) for the soldier boys at the Olivet Baptist Church. In spite of the rapi- ne several machine loads of Tacomans (mostly young ladies) visited the camp. They were asked to stay for dinner and supper. They accepted the invitation. Our dinner consisted of oyster soup, combination salad, roast turkey, cranberry sauce, candied yams, French peas, mime pie, apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, nuts, raisins and cocoa. After dinner our fourpiece orchestra tuned up, and we danced until time for retreat, 4:45. After supper our visitors departed for their homes, feeling that they had done their bit. Friday was the happiest day spent in camp thus far. After our two morning drills we were ordered to stay in barracks to sign pay roll. Saturday, rained all day. Most of our boys went to town and remained over Sunday. Revs. Green and Durham, drafted from Frisco and Sacramento, respectively, hold services in Co. 50 barracks each Sunday. Mrs. Neal Bradford arrived in Tacoma Sunday for an indefinite stay. Neal Bradford is in Co. 49. The St. James Baptist Church has been in a revival service under the leadership of Rev. W. H. Dickinson and Pastor for the last ten days with good results. The Lord has wonderfully and beautifully blessed us where we are glad. Southland has been invoked and baptized, believers have been restored and behaviors have been inspired and strength under the Gospel praised by this theme. Our little church has been spiritually benefited by the continuing Rev. Dickerson to Neesleys and our interest among our people is alimenting our mourning souls every day. This past month, a variation that this church has made before experienced such an awakening, litten souls have been added to the church since we have begun these meetings. Our Sunday school is thoroughly alive and all of our other anxiaries. We are holding our meetings for another week, hoping and praying for great results. "Back to Childhood" Movement Heartily Endoreed A growd of what appeared to be a kind of opulence, gorging, hauling, carefree children, but which later appeared to be hearty, grownup young lanes and gentlemen, filled the home of the Mosses Brown. 2299 New Jersey street, on the evening of Nov. 27. From the willingness of each to don the jogs of their childhood days, which consisted of short dresses in trousers, trains, a skirt and big bows of ribbon, one would judge that they were poised glad of the opportunity to appear childish one more. At that there appeared to be a sort of emigration on the part of the young halves, but, as the evening wore off, the was entirely forgotten a 'they heartily' mind in the entertainment they have so well. Mr. Jimmie Thomas was the leading singer. An oration was deli- ered by Private Smith that made quite a hit, for he has distinguished himself as orator among his soldier mates. This title he won in college among his classmates, but recently he has no cause to show his ability. He is now acting as non-commission officer. There is still chance of one L. A. boy's ad- vancement. But some the L. A. boys are grieved because they have heard that 33 Los Angeles boys will leave the camp for New York this week. THE YOULETIDE BENEFIT FUND COMPLETE REPORT The Yoletide had many calls this week, a short the details are to the receipt and expenditure of the Yoletide Fund, created as a result of the ball at Strome And total on the 26th of November. Bonner entertained a few of their friends at their home, 363 Cypress avenue, Thanksgiving. The guests were Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Albambra, Mr. and Mrs. Malone and daughter, and Mrs. A. Green of Monrovia, Scripture lesson was read by J. H. Edmonds of 150s Angeles preached at 11 a.m. He spoke very beautifully on the life of Paul, which demonstrated a life of sacrifice (try giving up his life and character to be in prison) a life of service and a life of faith. He then urged the congregation to keep the path like Paul and be willing to sadrifice more for Jesus. At 4 o'clock Rev. B.C. Robeson pastor of the A.M.E Zion church preached a most excellent sermon on the power of prayer. He said the only way to draw nigh to God was through the medium of prayer. He illustrated how and why prayer was an instinct and that it was natural to pray. He urged the congregation to pray in the sunshine when the clouds were imprisoned and not to wait till they were in want. After the services quarterly services were presided over by Rev. Robeson. CALEXICO. Nov. 28th was a great day in Calexico. The young people of Calexico made their first effort in public entertainment, which proved a complete success, both socially and financially. The Junior Christian Endeavor of Bethel Christian Church gave a concert. The manner in which the program was carried out was indeed an honor to the race and a credit to the participants. Calexico, the youngest town in the valley, so far as the colored population is concerned, is making great strides to the front. The colored people receive the support of white friends as well as colored. The audience that witnessed the concert were about half white and half colored. Miss Gertrude Chrisman of El Centro rea a paper on the "Conservation of Food," which was well received. Miss Crisman brought out little Dubois McGee, who recited two humorous selections. By these methods other races are getting better acquainted with us as a people. The people of Calexico have set a little higher social standard than some other towns. The people first coming here have maintained this standard simply by keeping to themselves and not mixing with all classes of persons. Now we feel proud to say that so many nice, representative people are coming here. Among the fate arrivals are Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Horne, Mr. and Mrs. John McCullum, with their three bright, interesting children; also, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Layne, with their three alert, eager boys; also, Grandfather Layne, Mother Alexander, Mr. and Mrs. Evans and Baby Evans. It is a pleasure to welcome to our city such people as the above named. The latest business ventures among the race are: Aker's cash grocery, by Mr. Akers, who already has a well paying business on Main street. Mr. Anderson has opened an upholstering business and is kept busy all the time. The colored people in general of Calexico have organized "The Calexco Development Co." of which you will hear more in the near future. We would rather see you shot by the highest tribunal of the United States Army because you dared protect a Negro woman from the insult of a Southern brute in the form of a policeman, than to have you forced to go to Europe to fight for a liberty you cannot enjoy. Negro women regret that you mutinied, and we regret that you said innocent blood, but we are not sorry that five Southern policemen's bones now bleach in the graves at Houston, Texas. It is far better that you be shot for having tried to protect a Negro woman, than to have you die a natural death in the trenches of Europe, fighting to make the world safe for a democracy you can't enjoy. On your way to the Training Camps you are jim-crowed. Every insult that can be heaped upon you you have to take, or be tried by court martial if you resent it. I needed you in Austin this week. If some of the 63 members of the 21st had been in Austin, I would not have been insulted by a street car conductor when I asked for a transfer that was due me, my business manager of Scarborough's store, my husband, would not have been insulted by a street car conductor when he had paid his fare and had dared sit in a vacant seat in front of a white woman. The teachers of this city would not have been insulted in the Capitol of the Lone Star State when they were told by the Superintendent to go there to listen to the Governor of Texas tell them why they should take out liberty bonds. Oh, no, colored soldiers, you will have died for what white men die what white men die every day, you will have died for the most sacred thing on earth to any race—even the Southern white man, his wife's his mother's, his sister's, his neighbor's sister's protection from insult. The church was beautiful, decorated with red, white and blue on paper, carnations and ferns. The banquets was given in honor of Rev. D, H. Washington, pastor; deans, trustees and captains of the clubs who have worked so faithfully this year. Rev. Dr. MacWilliams, the well known and greatest orator in Los Angeles, delivered the address. The following despatch to the New York World was received from John J. Cornwell, Governor of West Virginia: Charleston, W. Va., Replying to your wire, my views are embodied in a letter to Gov. McCall, which is as follows: "I have your letter declining to honor my requisition for the return of John Johnson, now in your city. "With all due respect to the representative of your State, who visited this city for the alleged purpose of making an investigation regarding the case, I am compelled to say that he has evidently missed you as to the facts in the matter. "The suggestion that exaggerated reports of the crime have been generally circulated in the community, and that on account of the nature of those reports and the race of the defendant there exists a prejudice which would be difficult, if not impossible, of control by the most upright, Judge, is not only unwarranted and untrue, but is a reflection upon this State and its courts which I very frankly and respectfully resent. It is not justified by any records of incidents connected with the State since its organization. "The Prosecuting Attorney of the county, in a letter to me, advices that your 'trained officer' who came to this city for the college purpose of investigating the case was here several days before calling upon any officer of the State or county if that he frequented the red-light district where Johnson's alleged crime was committed in an apparent effort to obtain information which would warrant him making an adversary report that on the very day he left Charleston he called at the office of the Prosecuting Attorney for the first time; that the Prosecuting Attorney gave him the name of a great many witnesses whom he could not have intervened before leaving the city, and gave him all the facts within the possession of the State's representatives. "The Prosecuting Attorney requested the privilege of presenting West Virginia's side of the case at the coming hearing of Johnson in Massachusetts and was assured it was not necessary to do so; but when he insisted upon making that appearance he was told he would be advised when the matter was to be again heard, and that no such advice was received and that the Prosecuting Attorney had no intimation or information relative to the time of the further hearing as promised. "Only a few days ago I honored a requisition for the return of an alleged fugitive to your State. "The crime with which he was charged was insinificant and unimportant compared with the one with which John-on is charged and for which two people are now serving sentence in the State penitentiary as accessories. GOIN J. CROMWELL, "Governor." he crime with which Johnson is charged is an attack on Nellie Kellenberger a 14-year-old white girl, alleged to have been committed in December, 1916. Eight persons were indicted in the case, six of whom are now serving sentences for the crime. John J. Johnson and Tim Bee escaped and those has not been caught. One of those convicted was M. O. Mallory, a dive keeper, in whose house the girl was deprived and the crime committed, sentenced to two years in the State penitentiary. Since incarceration the Mallory woman has settled civil suits on behalf of the girl for $5,000. A Negro known as Smith, aline Wayne, was sentenced to one year for kidnapping the girl and taking her to the Mallory woman. Mick McDonald received fifteen years. Robert Alexander received fifteen years; Happy Gines, twenty years; Homer Brown, twenty years for perjury in the graines trial. All are now serving their sentences. Johnson was indicted last January.
