*TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PRO
CEEDS WHU GO TO RED.
The twenty-sixth Annual Tournament of Roses to be held at Las Vegas on New Year's Day, January 1st, 1918 promises to surpass any of its predecessors, as the event will be carried out this year more in the nature of a patriotic celebration, and the net proceeds handed over to the Red Cross.
All Southern Colleges is totally interested in the success of the Tournament, at being the first time means of arranging the biennial winter display, which we know now in continuation to the present and enjoy which once was the most important at this time of year.
Moving just to more recent times the Famous "Twin" Woodies will attend, and the pictures taken by them will be also mostly shown every year and to be presented about the country.
In the evening a grand patriotic ball will be held in the Maryland Hotel, and will be a sitting conclusion to the day of festivals.
This year's Tournament of Roses will be the biggest benefit entertainment to be held anywhere in America.
The stirring East versus West Football Game at Tennent Park on the afternoon of New Year's Day will be started this season with every effort to on the past chadistorial contests on the gridiron, because it is realized that the better the game promised, the greater will be the interest and the dance and the greater the return to the Red Cross and the war we will represent.

their own 21 years of experience. C. P. publicist, F. M. E. N. B. C. and L. A. G. and all California institutions in this section.
Even though by Jordan came into our own without the trinkling of old books and the sounding of grunts he is not one of the most conspicuous men of the Race Born. His first institution was ten years of age before he became new inside of a church.
He was consecrated and baptized in 1821 on the Hurricane Plantation owned by Jeff Davis.
He was a liberal educator, Roger William University, and other schools of good reputation. By Jordan posted several churches. He spent several years as a special honor of Publication and for the 22nd year served as secretary of the Fortress Mission Board, N. B. C. which period he has visited Africa 3 times, South America once, the West Indies twice, and England 4 times. He has covered more miles in the home field than any other general missionary of the Baptist Denomination, in short, he is known as the brother of the church.
In spite of his ardent and tireless labor in the Home and Foreign Missionary fields, and his 60 years, Dr. Jordan still possesses that vim and enthusiasm that characterizes his work.
So full is his heart with love and hope for Africa that he inspires his hearers when and wherever he pleads her cause.
While in Los Angeles, Dr. Jordan was the house guest of Dr. H. D.
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, DECEMBER S. 1917
NOTABLE VICTORY FOR JUSTICE AND FAIR PLAY—COUN CILL BACKS CIVIL SERVICE
Monday the Public Safety Commission on the City Council settled all训时 the policy of "minim crowding" the colored citizens in the Fire Department of the city by declaring that before there would be no separate list kept of Colored Eliminates and the contrary of colored men now upon the Eliminates list for that Department would be distributed to the various Fire Houses in line with their rating as vacancies required. The California Enroll has stood out boldly against the request of bateholt and irresponsible leaders which had been very offensive in instilling in indian schools that the colored people of this city, the people who bateholt and stand up against their rights as American citizens were just doing to be uncrowded.
In bateholt trials and again the Enroll had known the Mayor and City Council that the colored citizens as a whole were as much opposed to public institutions as they were opposed to separate public schools and they have listened and have taken to it. We will state that they have not opposed people in this city to all the laws and that they and those who in the city are always proudly presenting themselves. We are all allied with all and against the white folks some time now cannot do all the time and for this reason our votes in this city have a larger number of votes than they have in a long time public. In watching at the triennial members of the race have to cooperate and also that are placed to fight against them now as a race. In this connection we now have a majority of all the All American League and are endeavoring to raise bateholt. The commissioners on the All American League have personal and non-tribal purpose in organizing the League. It is should not be because they worry the test on the race in all this broad country to lose Alabama best and that race in some citizenship. This has been organized only by the President of the United States to Governor the State and the Mayor this City and to sooth by the City Council awarding a trophy to him in our department but by citizens of all cities are preparing to institute the All American Conference and more totally the National Association for Protection to the RED, PEO. We will quite certainly adopted a solution to protect the trophy and further indicate a plan to people booking for separate treatment as citizens.
All American League makes not an orthodox Americanism neither American nor non-constituted. In other words it makes not that is to return to one American is not known to all. That is the ideal part of the All American League now the Nation stands.
The Harmons tour package the French institution of human slavery under the rule of France, called the themselves in battle with the National air, "La Marseille," and win. They appealed to their fellow countrymen there to test mastering the principles of democracy.
The All American League is fighting race prejudice as the right of American citizens, not as a privilege of the authored. It recognizes two true democracy, which a plan is known by the author of his skim, his two or three citizens, and that is why you as a race commons.
We cannot hope to accomplish anything worth while in seeking for discrimination for some questionable advantage, and any man or body of men who go before the City Council are in the said cities as they mean by the race who are elemenatic minority schools, because they are not the real institutional North American citizens, will be excluded from the jury in the case of them.
The Public Safety Commission of the City Council put them alone Monday on record as doing that there shall in the future be no separate trial of criminals for "timestow" two houses, and that the colored men now on the eligible list will be distributed to the various the houses without any regard to race or color is to be congratulated by all citizens, white or colored, interpreting a record for trim Americanmen.
The California Eagle from the very beginning opposed further extension of the "juniorrow" features of our public institutions here, in testimony the Navy was good enough to fight and it needed be for American institutions, he was good enough to treated "white."
The California Eagle wishes to again constitute the Civil Service Commission, the Public Commission, the City Council and the Mayor of this city that they had the侵夺ent courage to get away from the "straw leadership" of a number of discredited men of the race who for the sake of "marketable notoriety" have become "professional Negroes." Negroes who at times make it a business to miss府, for the whole race. And again, thank you gentleman, and some ladies.
And now while the Civil Service and Council acknowledge that this is truly justice, the fair and square time to do is not to call for an examination until the apport list of criminals is exhausted. It would be so easy for justice to be dealt with a narrow head of department that the names of the men would remain where they are until doom is there was a possible way for them to escape a plain duty. On these phases we hope we present a solid front save and except the larrison and irresponsible brigade.

NOTABLE VICTORY FOR JUSTICE AND CIL BACKS CIVIL SERVICE
Monday the Public Safety Commission for all time the policy of "min-crowding" the 10 pariment of the city by declaring that separate list kept of Colored Eliminates and now upon the Eligible List for that Department the various Fire Houses, in line with the City California Eagle has stood out by barking and irresponsible leadership which misstreeting and in and out of schools" that the people who live and stand upon them were "not dying to be crowded."
In other trials and against the Eagle Commission that the colored citizens are to portrate public institutions as they work and they have listened and have taken action to state right here that citizens not at all represented by the City Council to vote as always for so long as they cannot do all the time and that people have warned that the City Council will not allow them to vote as usual. In the Attorney General's Branch the Commission on the Personnel Branch not ultimative purpose is to teach them in public and should because they were the first to country to have all of the best citizenship. This has been organized into the United States Council for the State and is now by the City Council in motion but by an effort paring to institute the All American Council for the National Association for Prison Life who into society adopted a particular attitude to people looking citizens.
The All American League makes no further Articulation nor Composition. In what is known to concern American is kind of parison with the All American League.
The Hartmans ton parie the French institute the time of France called themselves in "La Maré basse" and won. They appealed also to master and master the principles of the All American League is building of American citizens as a privilege of not trim democracy wily of a plan is known to exist and of objects and that is why you want. We cannot hope to accomplish anything discrimination for some unlawful advantage of person who before the City Council as as the way to the viable jobs. are in the book of the race who were demilitarized by and of the nice real unmortal still locked and prior to the wars of the Middle East and Safety Council is doing the same. Monday the separate list of tribes for "time the colored men now on the eligible list whose houses without any regard to location by all citizens, white or colored to American."
The California Eagle from the very beginning of the "min-crowding" features of our setting in the New York was good enough to American institutions. He was good enough.
The California Eagle wishes to acquaint Commission the Public Safety Commission the Mayor of this city that they had the away from the "straw leadership" of a man who may for the sake of "marketable international Negroes" Negroes at times speak for the whole race. And again, than ladies, too.
And now while the Civil Service and Cit is tardy justice, the fair and square time summation until the present list of that he so easy for justice to be charged with that the names of the solemn would remain day if there was a possible way for them these places we shall present a school hardwood and irresponsible brigade.

THE TEMPLE OF FAME" STELLAR PRODUCTION AT FIRST A.M. E. CHURCH WAS MAGNIFICENT SUCCESS
If the big 8th and Towne Ave. Church had been just twice as large as it was it would then have possibly been inadequate to accommodate the vast horde of people that came to that church on last Tuesday evening to witness the stellar production of "The Temple of Fame," with Mrs. Lillian J. Craw as impresario, assisted by Edward W. Lee, Elmer C. Bartlett, pianist; Eggleson's Orchestra, Paul R. Williams, architect, and J. H. Caulsberry, electrician.
In magnificent splendor and gorgeous attainment this spectacle, the production of the "Temple of Fame," marked a new epoch in the organization of talent and the rounding into concrete and intelligent form.
son by highly proctect Bent House, Lee D. Washihave Emmas of the ton by well a right and R. Ellsworth was g no excitation of talent and the rounding into concrete and intelligent form.
of more than 50 people, who with the highest possible credit, put forth a promotion that the most pretentious impressario could not help but proud of, and Mrs. Lijhlans J. Crawl has again demonstrated her ability as never before, but she very modestly gives credit to all of the participants and those who assisted her, and there are none who took part in this mighty spectacle but should be proud of the part they played, because each one performed her or her part with signal credit. Space will not permit of individual mention of the various characters, but from the rise of the curtain to the end there was action and a passing of events every minute of the time. The first part opened on the scene. "The Court of Fame," with the queen and her retinue of mads, pares, etc. Special mention might well be made of Vineut Part letta by Benjamin Franklin, and W. O. Tyler as Frederick Douglass. The

mission of the City Council settled mine, the colored citizens in the Fire, that before there would be no males, and the forty-five colored men in the Department would be distributed with their bodies, as vacancies occurred out body against the request of up which had been, very officiously, in the colored people of this city, the untouchable rights as American citizens.
Bachelor had shown the Mayor and a whole who was as much opposed as war opposed to separate public have taken to test.
see that the colored people in this city, their leaders, and those who would not be sitting themselves in the office for this cause, were in this city for the protection by a long time in the militant numbers of the race institution that are plotted to fight it.
In this city we now have war leaders and are endeavoring to the All American League to have in organization the League. If it is not the race in all this broad and looking for separate treatment as slaves for an aristocracy Americanismized. In other words it makes for an institution of human slavery under laws in battle with the National art, appealed to their fellow countrymen of democracy.
relying race prejudice as the right edge of the artifice. It recognizes known by the color of his skin, his race as a race in any advantage, and any man or body unmasked for separate races houses in the middle of the city schools, because countrymen of this American citizens, the nation.
But the city Council that put them in that they shall in the future "imcrew two houses," and that the will be distributed to the valued race or color is to be congruated with a record for trim every beginning opposed further exposition of our public institutions here, in much to right and shelted need be far enough to treated "white."
We again constitute the Civil Service Commission, the City Council and had a number of discredited men of notable non-riarity" have become "prostituted times make it a business to missin, thank you gentlemen, and some and Council acknowledge that this time to do is not to call for an individual is exhausted. It would with a narrow head of department reclaim where they are until doomsday them to create a plain duty. On that solid front save and except the
super-sonation was realistic indeed, and it seemed as thought the "Old Men Elephant" had indeed returned to the scenes of life. Christine Nilson by Beatrice Young, was also highly credible. The original Topi spy protege of Mrs. C. A. Bass as Hairy Beecher Stowe brought down the house. Barbara Fritschie, by Maude Lee Davis was true to life, George Washington by Bert Tucker could not have been better. Jenny Lind by Emma Smith was the song triumph of the evening. Booker T. Washington by Henderson Whiesant was well acted. The classies chorus by eight little girls was very very good and no one excelled Mrs. Calpine Ellsworth in her plea for mother, she was grand. Prof. W. T. Wilkens always pleases and this occasion was no exception his direction of the Poet and Peasant by Misses Lucile Banton and Fanny Wilson' was superb.
R ORIG
The scene surpassed in grandeur and splendor and one could well imagine that they were actually in the presence of the grand courts of Europe. So lifelike was the reproduction, with all degrees and triples of royalty gathered at this coronation, it was indicted a spectacle worth going a long way to witness.
The Italian Court, E. W. Lee as King and Gwendolyn Baker as Queen, with its attendants and peasants represented by Janis Lee soldiers, W. and C. Lewis; peasants; L. Beverly, G. Copeland, W. Ellsworth, H. Donglass Greer, was a feature, and the rendition of "Italia" by the peasants was grand.
With the advent of the French Court, with Stanley Bruington as President, with his soldiers, and the Court of England, Payne Middleton as King, and Juanita Johnson as Queen these courts, with their pages and attendants, presented one mighty spectacle of grandeur, of dazzling beauty unscellled, and thus came to a close the grandest spectacle of its kind ever attempted by the colored people of this section.

SAN PEDRO TRAINING STATION
By Floy G. Snelson, Jr.
This station, which is the Los Angeles home of the boys of the Naval Base Hospital Unit No. 3, will long be remembered by them as the place where they first got their start in military life, where they graced the old uniform of Uncle Sam, which, while it bestowed upon them great honor, ostracized them from many of their old forms of ligation in civilian life, which in time will well add to their pure manhood and integrity. Unlike our brothers at American Lake we enjoyed the pleasure of coming home, so our friends could behold our spectacular paraphernalia and tell them our actual experiences as they were in progress, on which we were glad to receive personal, compliments—flattering and otherwise. Some of the happenings and developments resulted as follows:
Messrs, Elbridge Lee, George Barber, Eddie Jones, Otis Bowdoin, Clay bourne Stovall, Frank Patterson, and
NUMBER 43
Earl Morris were listed among the "beef trust" *g* being unable to be fitted in "meos" (overcoats), over-averaging size 25, the maximum.
Oscar Jones pleaded to the doctor that he couldn't stand much pain, when the needle was gently placed in his tender arm.
Wil Curtis finally arrived at the Station in the eleventh hour, and joined the unit before they left.
Only one more member is to join the unit, all having appeared. Selley Hammond, who was in St. Louis, is the guilty party.
Jesse Walker was the champion kissing bug among the girls before leaving L. A.
Among the visitors at the training station before the unit departed were the following: Miss Rosie Hickey, Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Moore, Mr. Leon Loeb, Mrs. J. F. Baber, Miss Leona Baber, Mr. Rhiéric Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Robinson, Miss Violette McDowell, Chas. Stovall, Jack Traylor, Miss Isabelle Stovall and mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Lockett, and Mrs. Viola Stovall, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Stovall and Mrs. Harry Lewis.
Georg Gaber, and Otus Bowdoin were "booze" in the whist tournament, and Oscar Jones and Frank Patterson were the medalists.
Elbruder Lee was the first member to "bust the sucks".
Tuesday night was the first night at the Station. All returned at the decent, respectable hour of 9 o'clock. Among the coldest sleepers were Sam

November 24th, 1917.
My dear loving mother and father—I am now in the city of New York I have still got the same old Los Angeles smile. So please don't worry about me, as I will always take care of myself. I was in Chicago the other day, but give me dear old Los Angeles for mine every time. It is very cold up here now but I am a soldier and am able to stuff almost every thing. If they send me to France I am not怕iring for I fear nothing, for I am in the hands of the Lord and wherever He leads me I will follow. I possess a Lieutenant the other day and he said, how i it that you are always smiling and song of the other boys seem to be down hearted. I hold that I have a smile that never will wear off even if I met the Kaiser face to face, and he, said on my body you have the right spirit. Well, I guess this will be all for this time and tell my brothers and sisters to droo me a letter, for I have not much time to write, and when I hear from home it kind of cheers me up. Don't forget to pray for me, at Xmas dinner, for I may be in France by that time, but it won't take as long to return. Love to all. I remain.

Through the columns of The
Eagle we want to make known to
the people of our great State, that
we are here in the light for a better
and nobler manhood and womanhood and a greater devotion to God.
For three years Rev. S. B. Danby has labored diligently among us, both as a minister and a teacher.
"The teacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written was upright, even word of the truth."
Rev. J. W. Conquest, B. D., who succeeds Rev. Danby, is meeting with wonderful success.
Aside from improving the church parish nage, Rey, Conquest, with the aid of Dr. Jones of Los Angeles, has conducted the greatest revival ever held in this valley.
"Truth from his lips' prevailed with double sway, and fools who came to scoff remained to pray."
During the two weeks' revival 55 persons were converted; 27 of these converts have become members of St. Paul's M. E. Church making a total of more than 30 new members for the new conference year.
Six others have joined the A. M. E. Church at Bowies and a large number of the others have enrolled in churches in Fresno.
Sunday, Dec. 7, there will be a rally and Baptism. This, we believe will be in keeping with past successes.
OLDEST MAN IN U. S. DIES
Brooklyn, N. Y., Nov. 23. John W Johnson, an ex-slave—who is said by some of his friends to have been the oldest man in the United States, was buried Wednesday, Nov. 14, in St. John's cemetery.
It is claimed Johnson was 116 years old when he died on Monday, Nov. 12 in Kings county hospital of pneumonia.
He was known as 'Prophet John' because of his predictions, which were frequently borne out.
Johnson predicted the election of Hyland for mayor of New York City, and the day after caught a severe cold and was taken to the hospital. He rapidly developed pneumonia.
He lived for 50 years on Atlantic avenue, near Scheneetady avenue, and ie survived by one daughter,

Carrie, 45, a resident of St. Domine's home, Myrtle avenue. He lived in Brooklyn 56 years.
His daughter, when interviewed, claimed to know little of his early life, or former associates. He was born in slavery in South Carolina and was foreman of a plantation gang. His favorite reminiscences concerned two attempts to escape, both of which failed.

"Back to Childhood" Movement Heartily Endoreed
A growd of what appeared to be a kind of opulence, gorging, hauling, carefree children, but which later appeared to be hearty, grownup young lanes and gentlemen, filled the home of the Mosses Brown. 2299 New Jersey street, on the evening of Nov. 27.
From the willingness of each to don the jogs of their childhood days, which consisted of short dresses in trousers, trains, a skirt and big bows of ribbon, one would judge that they were poised glad of the opportunity to appear childish one more.
At that there appeared to be a sort of emigration on the part of the young halves, but, as the evening wore off, the was entirely forgotten a 'they heartily' mind in the entertainment they have so well.
The Superintendent of the Young People's Missionary Society, Mrs. C. A. Banks, and the Superintendent, Mrs. Jane Williams, were also on keeping with the occasion, the former having two long curls down her back and a big bow of pink ribbon, at the top of her head, and the latter having or a umbrella and carrying a large teddy bear.
A program, highly entertaining and pleasing numbers, was founded by these youngsters.
Two features in particular are worthy of mention: "The Dells' Hospital," a one-act play, by say little curls, and a "Tom Thumb wedding." The guests were then served with attentiveness.

Camp Lewis
American Lake, Wash.
Dear Sir,
This is to inform you of the boys in
camp at American Lake, Washington.
The boys are all jolly and seem to
enjoy the soldier's life. Plenty of fun
to be had, and no one seems lonely.
We have our morning exercise in
trilling; in the afternoon we spend
the time in marching. We are con-
stantly on the go no time to leaf
except on Saturday afternoon and
Sundays in Seattle.
We have a Y. M. C. A., and we
spend most of our leisure hours there.
Last Friday night, the 4th Co., 13
B. N., Colorrd, gave an entertainment.
We had a quartet that made
a hit. Mr. Jimmie Thomas was the
leading singer. An oration was deli-
ered by Private Smith that made quite
a hit, for he has distinguished himself
as orator among his soldier mates.
This title he won in college among his
classmates, but recently he has no
cause to show his ability. He is now
acting as non-commission officer. There
is still chance of one L. A. boy's ad-
vancement.
But some the L. A. boys are grieved
because they have heard that 33 Los
Angeles boys will leave the camp for New York this week. We haven't the words to express to the people of Los Angeles; for the good spadefoot that was be towed upon us. This true we have left your dear ones behind; perhaps we will never meet again—but Goal grant that we may. But, be still, sad heart, and cease repriming:
Behind those dark clouds the sun is
Shining.
Thy fate has been the common fate
of all.

Ameri is the one great remaining storehouse in the world of supplies and credit. We must maintain and make effective as possible our own soldiers and the soldiers of those nations who are fighting for us.
We must therefore draw as little as possible upon our common store of supplies and money. The more we lessen our domestic demand, the more we can contribute to the support and effectiveness of our allied armies.

The guests were Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Albambra, Mr. and Mrs. Malone and daughter, and Mrs. A. Green of Monrovia, Scripture lesson was read by J. H. Bonner, from Rom. 8: "There is now therefore no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit." All seemed to enjoy the proceedings of the day. Music by Miss Bessie Malone and Mrs Celia Smith. All returned to their homes in good spirits at 7:30 Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and Miss Turner of Los Angeles arrived to begin their evening service, which was attended by a large number. The young ladies athletic club played basketball against young men of Monrovia and Pasadena Sunday p.m. Of course the girl won. The members are Nisses are L. L. Bonner, M. Jackson, F. McCoy, T. Custon, E. Jones, H. Robinson, H. Ross and F. Kinzy.
A great day was witnessed at the Zion A. M. E church, Rev. N. E. Clark, pastor, Sunday.
The morning service was well attended. . . Rev. J. G. Edmonds of 150s Angeles preached at 11 a.m. He spoke very beautifully on the life of Paul, which demonstrated a life of sacrifice (try giving up his life and character to be in prison) a life of service and a life of faith. He then urged the congregation to keep the path like Paul and be willing to sadrifice more for Jesus.
At 4 o'clock Rev. B.C. Robeson pastor of the A.M.E Zion church preached a most excellent sermon on the power of prayer. He said the only way to draw nigh to God was through the medium of prayer. He illustrated how and why prayer was an instinct and that it was natural to pray. He urged the congregation to pray in the sunshine when the clouds were imprisoned and not to wait till they were in want.
After the services quarterly services were presided over by Rev. Robeson.
CALEXICO.
Nov. 28th was a great day in Calexico.
The young people of Calexico made their first effort in public entertainment, which proved a complete success, both socially and financially.
The Junior Christian Endeavor of Bethel Christian Church gave a concert.
The manner in which the program was carried out was indeed an honor to the race and a credit to the participants.
Calexico, the youngest town in the valley, so far as the colored population is concerned, is making great strides to the front. The colored people receive the support of white friends as well as colored.
The audience that witnessed the concert were about half white and half colored.
Miss Gertrude Chrisman of El Centro rea a paper on the "Conservation of Food," which was well received.
Miss Crisman brought out little Dubois McGee, who recited two humorous selections.
By these methods other races are getting better acquainted with us as a people.
The people of Calexico have set a little higher social standard than some other towns.
The people first coming here have maintained this standard simply by keeping to themselves and not mixing with all classes of persons. Now we feel proud to say that so many nice, representative people are coming here.
Among the fate arrivals are Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Horne, Mr. and Mrs. John McCullum, with their three bright, interesting children; also, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Layne, with their three alert, eager boys; also, Grandfather Layne, Mother Alexander, Mr. and Mrs. Evans and Baby Evans. It is a pleasure to welcome to our city such people as the above named.
The latest business ventures among the race are: Aker's cash grocery, by Mr. Akers, who already has a well paying business on Main street.
Mr. Anderson has opened an upholstering business and is kept busy all the time.
The colored people in general of Calexico have organized "The Calexco Development Co." of which you will hear more in the near future.
Soldiers of the Twenty-fourth
Be brave, don't feel discouraged; rest assured that every woman in all this land of ours, that dares feel proud of the Negro blood that courses through her veins, reveres you, she honors you.
We would rather see you shot by the highest tribunal of the United States Army because you dared protect a Negro woman from the insult of a Southern brute in the form of a policeman, than to have you forced to go to Europe to fight for a liberty you cannot enjoy.
Negro women regret that you mutinied, and we regret that you said innocent blood, but we are not sorry that five Southern policemen's bones now bleach in the graves at Houston, Texas.
It is far better that you be shot for having tried to protect a Negro woman, than to have you die a natural death in the trenches of Europe, fighting to make the world safe for a democracy you can't enjoy. On your way to the Training Camps you are jim-crowed. Every insult that can be heaped upon you you have to take, or be tried by court martial if you resent it.
I needed you in Austin this week. If some of the 63 members of the 21st had been in Austin, I would not have been insulted by a street car conductor when I asked for a transfer that was due me, my business manager of Scarborough's store, my husband, would not have been insulted by a street car conductor when he had paid his fare and had dared sit in a vacant seat in front of a white woman. The teachers of this city would not have been insulted in the Capitol of the Lone Star State when they were told by the Superintendent to go there to listen to the Governor of Texas tell them why they should take out liberty bonds.
Oh, no, colored soldiers, you will have died for what white men die what white men die every day, you will have died for the most sacred thing on earth to any race—even the Southern white man, his wife's his mother's, his sister's, his neighbor's sister's protection from insult. Be brave and face death fearlessly C. L. THREADGILL, DENNIS.
CARD OF THANKS.
We wish to express our thanks to Rev. Shaw and choir for services rendered, and to the friends for their kindness, sympathy and beautiful floral offerings during the illness and death of our beloved son, uncle and husband.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Davis, Melvin Smith.
CARD OF THANKS.
I desire to extend my thanks to my many friends for their heartfelt sympathies and beautiful floral offerings, and also for their many kindnesses shown us during the illness and death of my beloved husband, A. V. Millard, Mrs. A. V. Millard.

REV. D. JE. WASHINGTON
Father of Stribla Baptist Church
THANKSGIVING DAY.
The banquet at St. John's Baptist church Thanksgiving evening was a delightful affair. The church was beautiful, decorated with red, white and blue on paper, carnations and ferns. The banquets was given in honor of Rev. D, H. Washington, pastor; deans, trustees and captains of the clubs who have worked so faithfully this year. Rev. Dr. MacWilliams, the well known and greatest orator in Los Angeles, delivered the address. Commending them for their remarkably good work, and the love and respect they have shown their pastor, who he said, was a broad-hearted Christ.
in gentleman. And among the many good thoughts, one was so the young women and young men of our race, urging them to prepare themselves to fill the place of the old heads in the churches, and to teach the greatest height along all educational lines and not to feel that any one was their superior, because one man or woman is no greater or higher in rank or position than another when they are both equal.
"No race, no creed, no color, but each man working out his destiny, under God, as seems best to him, without in any manner interfering with the rights of others so to do; equal opportunities to all men everywhere; and peace, and happiness, and clean living. Men and women who are really doing things worth while are not found among cabaret entertainers, dance hall instructors and others who are practicing evil occupation, who are causing the bars of high standard to be indiscriminately lowered."
The address was impressive, interesting and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who heard it.
The burning of the mortgage by the oldest members of the church was a very interesting sight, especially to see expressions of joy and pride as they watched the flames go up. The congregation sang "Nearer, my God, to Thee."
Mrs. Mollie Mauldren was awarded a gold watch for obtaining the largest number of votes in the contest. It was presented to her by Rev. Washington!
He shows many words of encouragement to her and told how much the emperor appreciated her work the four weeks she has been in city.
Music was furnished by the Angelus Orchestra, which has won its way into the heart of thousands, and each person tried it increasing in real musicality.
The table was beautifully decorated and contained many daunts. Covers were and for fifty.
Miss Elibora Fleenor acted as hostess and it was Washington as host.
A dishonest dinner was cooked anserving Mrs. F. M. Duprée, Mrs. M. Williams, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. McLain, Miss Moss and Miss Moore were waitresses.
All present said it was one of the sweetest affairs of the season among the elites.
