According to a suit filed in the Superior Court on last Monday, the indications are that "there will be a hot time in the old town." and another shakeup is on tap for the underworld of Los Angeles. The suit as filed alleges that one officer Watson has been a consistent tool of certain persons who essay to Central Affairs in the environs of the underworld conditions in this city. Lefty Peterson is the Plaintiff in the suit filed, he alleges in his complaint that he has been damaged to the extent of $3,600 by the action of Officer Watson who at the behest of George Brown and George Henderson has arrested him on divers occasions on charges which will not hold water, and at the behest of the persons named, so that these same parties may get possession of the leave which he holds on the Arcade Hotel on Ceres Ave., for the purpose of their own use, for gaming purposes. The complaint is what is known in legal parlance as a Wide Open One, and will allow the introduction of evidence which will shake not only lower Central Ave., but certain portions of the police department from Center to Circumference. The Eagle gleans from this action filed that all is not well in the turmoil of underworld affairs, and before many moons there will be a mighty shuffling thereabouts.
Our reporter is not in close touch with the conditions which obtain with parties named in the Complaint filed, however we have noted and have published in several of our late issues the prevalence of and activities of the Chinese Lottery joints, and we could not fathom just where they got on,

Rev. S. W. Brooks of Grand Rapids Michigan, who with his amiable wife is already making a place in the hearts of all those with whom they have come in contact.
Although Rev. Brooks and wife are recently of Grand Rapids, having pastored at Lansing for one year, his most beloved and first charge was at Wav Cross, Ga., in charge of the St. John's First Baptist Church.
The Tabernacle Baptist Church was privileged to near him on last Sunday morning and are looking forward to hearing him again Sunday evening.

that they have again begun to flourish like the green Bay Tree. We note that Chinese Lottery tickets in all their own haunts are as staple, as Coffee and Sugar, one of our solicitors not long since centered one of their joints on 12th St. near Central, advertised as a Restaurant, but the attendant informed our solicitor that they had nothing on the bill of fare except "Tickets" and offered to sell a Lottery ticket. Now, no more pernicious evil flourishes than this game with only one chance in ten thousand and to win. it is a bane on the progress of the community and there is a screw loose somewhere when it is allowed to flourish as is the case at the present time.
The Eagle stirreth her nest and stirring will be mighty uncomfortable for some concerned, pitiless publicity will at least focus the eyes of the public, and they are bound to get wise to "what's going on."
The Eagle representative interviewed Officer Watson, informed him of the suit against him, and he said, "Yes! I have made it mighty interesting for the underworld of late and of course they are hollering. Peterson is no good, he is a menace to society, for some reason Officer Glenn is misinformed when he gives such a man as this a clean bill, Glenn's actions in these premises are strange to say the least."
We could not locate either George Brown or George Henderson, who were named in the Complaint, to get their version of the affair. In the meantime Lefty Peterson is on trial in the Police Court with Attorney McBeth making a strenuous fight for him.

PEARL LOWERY-WINT-
ERS IN RECITAL.
Monday Evening at Independent
Church.
This promises to be one of the fea-
ture recitals of this season.
Mrs. Winters is one of Los Angeles' favorite daughters, and after touring the State to some extent giving recitals at Bakersfield, Fresno, and Oakland has come home to appear before her many friends and admirers. While touring the State and singing before some of the largest obtainable audiences in many of the White Churches and High Schools, Mrs. Winters was very favorably criticised by the Women's Harmony Club of Bakersfield, the Oakland Sunshine, and Rev. Coleman of the North Oakland Baptist Church, who presented Mrs. Winters but a few months past and was so highly pleased with her ability that he is loudly recommending her to other audiences.
In 1912 while touring the East Mrs. Winters sang in Conventional Hall, Kansas City, Kans., before 25,000 persons, where she was loudly applauded, and, before the National Federation of Colored Women's Clubs at Hampton, Va., where she received the plaudits of Booker T. Washington, Mrs. Washington, Mayor Moton, and Miss Armstrong.
Othee persons of note and musical ability who favorably criticise Mrs Winters as an artist of ability are those persons whose criticisms we are printing in part.
My friend, Mrs. Lowery-Winters has a rich Contralto Voice with organlike depth which surpasses any other Contralto of her race.

ANNUAL MEETING ELDORADO
GOLD STAR MINING CO.
Last Wednesday Odd Fellows Hall
corner of 5th and Wall Sts. was the
scene of a most notable gathering,
where the stock-holders of the above
company met in their Annual Session,
for the purpose of hearing the
reports of the company's officers and
to elect a board of directors for the
ensuing year.
More than 200 stock-holders were
present and then enthusiasm knew
200 bounds as the grand showing of
the company was presented in the
annual report of the officers.
The meeting was called to order at 10 o'Clock by the president, Rev G. W. Shields. After the devotional exercises by Rev. E. E. Lightner and the reading of the minutes of the last meeting the president presented Mr. J. B. Bass, editor of California Eagle, who delivered the opening address of welcome, the same was the setting for the pent of enthusiasm of the stock-holders and they were not backward for one moment in giving practical demonstration of the same.
After the address of welcome the report of Secretary Howard Folke was read and the work accomplished as shown by the report was a revelation to the stock-holders present and satisfaction beamed on the face of everyone present.
The report of the auditing committee was presented and showed the accounts of the officers to be in excellent shape.
The report of the directors, who recently made a trip to the properties of the company was then submitted and the only set-back in the same according to Messrs. Perry, Hayman and Christian, who made the trip was the fact that it was impossible for them to describe the wonderful properties and the extent of ore in sight. Mr L. E. Guest fiscal agent who has rendered such valient service for the company as their representative in the East was introduced and told of his experiences in that section to the delectation of the stock-holders present. Mr Guest is one of the pioneer members of the company and has rendered valient service. The president Rev G W Shields made a forceful address at the close of the session which elicited great applause and then introduced Father Summers who stays at all times right on the property, but essayed to take a vacation this year and attend the stock-holder's meeting, leaving immediately thereafter for the properties near Searchlight, Nev.
A Tense Moment.
When secretary Howard Folke in the course of his report exhibited the first gold and silver brick ever produced by a Negro Mining Company from the work of their own penius and labor, holding it aloft, it was indeed a tense moment as these people realized that at least their sacrifice and labor seemed to be not in vain and each one present had the opportunity of holding and examining the rich product from their very own properties. After singing "God Be With You till We Meet Again" the session adjourned to meet one year hence.
The present Board of Directors was by unanamous vote elected to serve for the ensuing year. They are as follows:
George W. Shields, Joseph J. Bunch, G. P. Isaacs, Howard Folke, Charles G. Dunscomb, L. K. Roberts, Walter Perry, Andrew Hayman, Willis Stories, and Samuel J. Brown.
Will publish secretary's report in a later issue.

Christian Science The Religion of Fulfillment.
Under the auspices of First, Fourth and Eighth Churches of Christ Scientists, of Los Angeles, lectures on Christian Science were delivered in this city recently by Judge Samuel, W. Greene, C. S., member of the Board of Lectorship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientists, in Boston, Massachusetts Judge Greene spoke substantially as follows:
The history of men throughout the ages has been an unceasing search after some power or some remedy that would transform and make harmonious every untoward and unlovely condition of human experience. History shows this search to be one of disappointment and failure until the discovery of Christian Science. It has generally been along material lines. The exceptional instances where spiritual teaching or inspiration has appeared and been followed constitute the great way marks of human progress. Christian Science accentuates this historical fact and explains it. Today I come to point you the way in Christian Science, which when rightly understood and practiced, leads to eternal harmony; for it reveals the only true God and man as made in His image and likeness and the whole earth to be transformed by the power of this Truth. The promise made through Christian Science as stated by its discoverer and founder, Mrs. Eddy, is "Divine Love always has met and always will meet; every, human need." (Science and Health, page 494.)
Christian Science is not, as some have imagined, a patent cure-all, nor is it faith cure. It is not the action of will power nor the action of the human mind. On the contrary, it teaches that the human mind must yield to the Divine Mind, to that Mind which was also in Christ Jesus, and, in the proportion that Christian Science is understood, it makes the life, words and ages of Christ Jesus practicable for all ages and all people. Try as men will to see the bright side, they are always conscious that there are the sick, the sorrowful, the sin-burdened, until sometimes one is constrained to believe that the whole earth is joining in one mournful lament. Christian Science comes to such with a scientific explanation of the comforting words of Jesus. "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." "Behold I give unto you, power-to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
Now just why do I say that Christian Science comes offering these assurances? You may say of them, you have read them and known them always. But have they been realized in your experience? Have you made them of any practical, import? Christian Science teaches that the kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, is at hand, is here and now. Through the study and practice of its teaching, men and women in large numbers are being healed of every manner of disease and sin, and their lives are being made brighter, happier and more satisfying. The theory that eternal life and happiness are to be had only beyond the grave has always been a depressing element in religion. Christian Science shows that it is an incorrect theory and that men do not have to wait for death or a final judgment day before attaining an unending paradise. What is generally designated as paradise, may be realized in some degree at once, and progressively through the study and understanding of Christian Science.
Jesus, by his life, taught and proved the possibility of solving all of
life's problems here and now. He healed all manner of disease; he provided food in the desert place; found tax money in the fish's mouth; for gave sin; raised the dead; and finally after his three days in the tomb reappeared to his disciples, thus conquering the great destroyer, Death.
One of the last things he said to his disciples was, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do, shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto my Father." With such a positive promise from Jesus, we must believe in the present possibility of healing the sick, of casting out sin, and of raising the dead, provided, of course, that we believe in him, that is, understand him and his teachings, which is the real meaning of the Greek word translated by our word "believe" in the new version. Does it not seem strange that the world should have waited so long for one to rise up and call attention to this and other plain Biblical promises, and prove the possibility of their fulfillment? And does it not seem even stranger, that when a gentle, sweet, pure-minded woman discovered the practical nature of these promises and began to call attention, through healings, to them, and their fulfillment in her own experience, that she should have been subjected to persecution at the hands of Jesus' professed followers? Ignoring, however, the lack of sympathy and interest manifested by the world in her discovery during the early years. Mrs. Eddy never wavered in her course, but patiently and diligently studied the Bible, that she might discover the positive rule for the solution of this problem of mind-healing. The result of her study she has since given to the world in the Christian Science Text-book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. As the years have come and gone during these more than fifty years since her discovery, there has been an ever increasing army of adherents, men widening circle covered by Christian Science and an ever increasing army of adherents, men and women who are constantly bearing witness to its healing and saving power; and who are ever mindful of their debt of gratitude to its revered discoverer and founder. There is nothing of worship or defiance in the reverence and respect said by Christian Scientists, to Mrs. Eddy, but there is fervent gratitude and appreciation in an unnumbered throng of men and women the world around who have felt and are feeling the uplift and blessing of her inspired teachings.
Up to the time of the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy, she had probably never dreamed of being a great religious teacher or leader, and yet no other leader ever lived to see in his own lifetime such an extensive and substancial growth and organization result from his teaching. Such results, however, are to be expected always when work is done as was Mrs. Eddy's. The presence of God was not a mere theory to her, but an actual fact, which she relied upon in establishing the Christian Science movement, as well as in all other things. Christian Science has revealed the correct concept of God. It asks the question squarely, "What is God?" and gives an answer that is satisfying. God is love, Spirit, Life, Truth, Soul, Mind, Principle. Perhaps the word Principle as applied to God has aroused more opposition from the critics of Christian Science than any other. They insist that to speak of God as Principle robs Him of personality, takes away His Fatherhood, tenderness and other human attributes. Christian Scientists believe that it is time the world was getting

away from the idea of an anthropo-
morphic God, a sort of superman, as
Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health,
page 249, "Human philosophy has
made God man-like. Christian Sci-
ence makes man Godlike."
Principle is without beginning or end, is continuous, is perfect, is immovable, is inviolable, is ever active. Principle is not moved by the breath of praise or fattery; nor by entreaty or threat. In the thought of God as Principle Christian Scientists have abandoned the idea that God interferes in human affairs, at the behest or entreaty of this or that one, or that He intereferees with His own law, and causes the unnatural or supernatural to be happening in the affairs of men. Christian Science shows that God's creation is already complete and perfect, consequently the true mission of scientific Christianity is to reveal this fact to us, and then to show us how to overcome in our lives and experiences, all those things which are unlike God's creation. We will suppose a man to be sick, and he desires the help of God, and turns to Christian Science to be made well. There is no specific or individual action required of God, that this man's condition may be righted, but the treatment or prayer of the Christian Science practitioner would be a clear realization that God has made all, and made all good. God has created man in His own image and likeness, therefore, the real man being made in God's image, cannot be what God is not, and certainly God cannot be sick. God has made only good, therefore. He never made any colds, fevers, aches or ills of any kind, and as God is the only power no other power has made these illions or aches, consequently they have not been made and man cannot have them because they do not really exist.
To persons accustomed to use material remedies in case of illness, such a system, of course, only briefly and inadequately indicated here, might not be considered scientific or beneficial, yet the actual exprience of anyone who will test it according to the principle and rule of Christian Science will prove that it is both scientific and beneficial. Of course, starting from the standpoint of perfection, there is no reality no sick man, and therefore no man in need of healing. When the human consciousness becomes spiritualized through right thinking or knowing, and man is revealed as the perfect manifestation of spirit, not of matter, the divine Mind is reflected, and man is governed by God. Mrs. Eddy says, "God will heal the sick through man whenever man is governed by God." (Science and Health, page 495.1) As the light of this healing truth is carried into that consciousness which is darkened by mortal belief it banishes all sense of error, even sickness as well as sin, and illumines it with love. Mrs. Eddy in speaking of Jesus' treatment of sickness says on pages 476 and 477 of Science and Health. "Jesus behold in Science the perfect man, who appeared to Him where sinning, mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.
God, as an infinite power, eternally continuous, is always at man's service, but man must bring himself into adjustment with that power, before it is available for him. Man's access to God's power for the healing of sickness or any other discord, is by means of prayer. Not warty petitions or fervid appeals as though addressed to some earthly potentata, but, as Mrs. Eddy says, "An absolute faith that all things are possible to God—a spiritual understanding of Him" (Science and Health, page 1). To be made whole, man must, through prayer and right understanding he brought into harmony or adjustment with the divine Mind; he must realize his at-one-ment with God. "But," says a friend, "why try to tell me that. I am not or cannot be

BIRCH ST. CHRISTIAN CHURCH
F. C. Cothran, Minister.
The pastor's subject "The Authority of Jesus," from which it must be said, he was sent from God. His mode of teaching as well as his doctrine confounded his hearers. They were anxious to know what authority he had for this teaching. Nicodemus came to Jesus, saying, "We know that thou art a teacher come from God." This acknowledgement as well as the compliment was not responded to by Jesus at all, but the answer was this, "Verily verily I say unto you, except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." This was to show this learned Pharisee his authority, for they nor the Scribes had any such doctrine. They bring him a condemned woman, here Jesus uses his authority by freeing her.
Rev. E. E. Lightner of Lincoln Memorial Congregational Church and his good people made a substantial contribution to our rally at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, on which occasion we raised $100.00 We are grateful to these good people.
Next Lord's Day: Preaching 11 a.m., subject "The People who Reject God;" 8 p. m., "Conversion of the Philippian Jailer." All welcome.
THE PEOPLE'S INDEPENDENT
CHURCH OF CHRIST
Cor. 18th and Paloma Sts.
Rev. N. P. Greggs, Pastor.
Sunday was a joyful day at People's Independent Church. Beginning with the Sunday School and continuing through all of the services copious showers of blessings were received by the large crowds that gathered here for worship.
Pastor Greggs occupied his pulpit at both services and delivered two wonderful sermons that were very practical and edifying. His subject at the morning hour was "Cities of Refuge." In the evening, "Wanted. A Man."
The rally total is growing rapidly. The Four Thousand Dollar mark has been crossed and reports are still coming in. The members and friends are justly proud of this marvelous effort. The pastor read to the congregations a receipt for $3,000.00 payment on the Principal of the First Mortgage. He also announced that the Second Mortgage would be canceled next month. The announcement was greeted with much jubilation.
Rev. C. H. Davis, Associate Pastor.
The services at the Tabernacle Baptist Church last Sunday will be long remembered, beginning at the Sun-rise Prayer Meeting which was a mighty blessing to all present. The Sunday School was largely attended under the leadership of Bro. Lasiter, the school is up to the-standard.
At 11 a. m. a large audience was present to greet Dr. S. W. Brooks of Grand Rapids, Mich., who spoke to us out of the fullness of his heart from the subject, "If Thou hast run with the Footman, and they have Wearied Thee, then How canst Thou contend with Horses? And if in the Land of Peace wherein Thou Trustest They Wearied Thee, then How will Thou do in the Swelling of Jordan?—Jeremiah 12:5. A most wonderful sermon was preached by the Divine. At the evening service we were pleased to have Dr. Brown of New Orleans, L. A., who preached a soul-stirring sermon out of which many practical truths were brought forth. Notwithstanding the fact that our Pastor, Dr. J. D. Gordon is on a three month's leave of absence Tabernacle is still keeping in a high spirit and still growing spiritually and financially. Next Sunday, Sept. 29th at the morning service our Associate Pastor, Rev. C. H. Davis will speak from this subject, "We have Toiled all Night, and taken Nothing." at the evening service Dr. S. W. Brooks of Michigan will occupy the pulpit. Hear him.

This church has had one of the best years in its history and the pastor and the people are to be commended for their faithful work. Services at this church all day Sunday. The public is invited.
TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH
Mr. Gladstone once made the statement that the relationship of the church to the youth of Great Britain was a matter of greater importance than all the combined problems of the British Empire. Without doubt the problem of the boy unquestionably is by far the most important and vital problem of the time. Why? Because the future depends upon him. If you are going to do anything permanent for the average man of tomorrow you must begin before he is a man. The chance of success lies in working with the boy and not with the man.
This will be one of the thoughts to be brought out by Rev. Williams in his sermon Sunday evening at the Trinity Baptist Church, "Training Boys to be Men," will be the subject. The morning subject-will be "Love is Greatest Force."
The Trinity Missionary Society will meet at 3 p. m. Sunday.
The Union will meet Monday morning, Sept. 30th at 11 o'Clock, at Tahernacle Baptist Church. The devotional exercises will occupy the first thirty minutes of the meeting.

FATHER CYRUS VENA AT RIPE
OLD AGE CROSSSES THE
GREAT DIVIDE.
Impressive Funeral Service; Notable Sermon by Rev. Craw. No prince or potentate ever received great homage at their passing than was the lot of Father Cyrus Vena. over whose body the last sad rites were held on last Thursday at the 8th and Towne Ave. A. M. E. Church. The large edifice was filled to pay their last respects to the memory of this venerable patriach. His Obituary which follows tells of his wonderful service to mankind.
The city officials the mayor represented by his private secretary was present at his funeral. Dr. Glenn McWilliams spoke most beautifully of the life and character of the deceased. The flag at the city hall hung at half mast and most of all he deserved these great honors. Dr. J. Logan Craw preached a wonderful sermon said by many to have been the most effective funeral oration which they had ever heard. Dr. H. D. Prowd, pastor of the Second Baptist Church also spoke most beautifully. Father Cleghorn offered prayer and Rev. A. P. Shaw read the Scripture Lesson. The Choir sang most beautifully, the rostrum was banked with flowers and beautiful floral pijeces which were presented by the many friends. The Eagle joins with the many friends of the family in offering condolence to the sorrow-stricken family.
OBITUARY OF HON. CYRUS VENN.
Per Rev. J. Logan Craw.
The Honorable Mr. Cyrus Vena was born in North Middletown, Kentucky, April 4, 1829. Died at his home, 317 North Bonnie Brae St. Los Angeles, Cal., Monday evening, Sept. 23, 1918, at 7 o'Clock. Age 90 years. Father Vena was married to Sarah J. Wernell in 1849, moved to Xenia, Ohio in 1851, where he took in active part in the work for the uplift of our people. To his union was born 5 children: 5 girls and 2 boys, of whom two—James M. and Miss Sing A. survive him. In Xenia he erected two buildings and sold same, to the City School Board. These were named the "Vena Buildings." There about Wilberforce University he erected beautiful buildings also as residences for Bishops Payne, Shorter, Arnett, the scholarly Hattie G. Brown and Hon. Martin G. Delaney. In Xenia the Hon. Father Cyrus Vena served two terms as a member of the City Council and Board of Equalization, and resigned these positions when he moved to Los Angeles more than 31 years ago. "James M." the surviving son here is clerk in the Los Angeles Post Office; while Sing A., the loving and faithful daughter unto death was formerly one of Ohio's best teachers. One of his grandsons, James Vena, Jr. is in the Government Service at Camp Lewis. Father Vena was a member of the Board of Trustees of Wilberforce University, Wilberforce, Ohio, the first institute in the United States devoted to the higher education of Negroes. He was a Contractor and Builder and reached the first buildings on the University grounds. He also superintended the building of the "Ohio Soldiers" and Sailors of the "Ohan's Home." At Xenia, in 1899 Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Vena celebrated in this city their "Golden Wedding" Anniversary and large numbers of friends paid the couple their respects. His wife passed away three months later. For sixty years he has been a faithful, unwavering, sacrificing and devoted member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Upon his arrival here 31 years ago, he united with this church at once. located then on Azusa St. and was an active Trustee there and here for about 20 years. As Leader of Class No. 4, no one will ever break down his monument or take his place in the hearts of the people. Bro. A. W. Wilson the present Treasurer of our Board of Trustees is the only active member on the ppresent working Board of Trustees who served with Father Vena up to the time that he voluntarily ceased his active office during the pastorate of the Rev. F. Jessie Peck, now President of Western University, Quindaro Kans.
For nearly thirty years Father Vena has been connected with the City Hall here and the Board of Public Works. Tuesday, paid the memory of our deceased Cyrus Vena Signal and deserving honor by having "our American flag" on City Hall placed at half-mast and adopting of appropriate resolutions. The Council, too, adopted resolutions of respect to the memory of this venerable man and adjourned. Father Vena was the son of free parents. His grandparents were also free being in part of Indian extraction. He never dissipated, and conscious and consecrated unto the end he fell "asleep in Jesus" early Mon-

Internment at Evergreen Cemetary. Father Vena requested that the family wear no mourning for him.
DR. H. D. PROWD EMMI-NENT PASTOR SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH.
Rev. H. D. Prowd, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, who returned last Monday from Chicago and St. Louis respectively, where he went to attend the National Baptist Convention, and the Annual Meeting of the Equal Rights League reports a very interesting trip.
Dr. Prowd is one of the ablest men in the great Baptist Church today, regardless of race or color.
Even though he is not in his teens Dr. Prowd has lost none of his real and vina, as apostle for Christ. Both National Convention and the Equal Rights League recognized the same in him upon this occasion, as they have upon all occasions when he has met with them those assailant qualities that go to make a man
At the National Convention Dr. Prowd was appointed one of the Peace Commissioners and Vice-President of the Convention at Chicago where he went at the close of the Convention to attend the Equal Rights League he was selected term Treasurer—all of which honors were thrust upon Dr. Prowd. For he is certainly not the honor-seeking kind in most cases being too modest to assert his rogouts. We don't consider ourselves such wise philosophers that we are wont to dictate or criticise too severely as a Journal, but we are forced to believe that the members of the good old Second Baptist Church of this city are somewhat short-sighted as to the minister occupying the pulpit at present.
Little more than two years ago when Dr Prowd and his splendid family came to this city we joined with the members of the church in welcoming this Divine to our city, and at that time we promised our loyalty, and that promise holds good today and as long as Dr Prowd stands out and represents the great principles which he does.
No man accomplishes great deeds without opposition and the man who stands out most prominently for clean living and high christian ideals is apt to be the target of the unsophisticated masses than any other, but Dr Prowd stands to the forefront like a mighty gladiator for real progress and his pathway is illuminated with a scintillating light, which is indeed worthy at all times of the highest consideration.
MRS. WHISENANT A FAVORITE
Mrs. Whisenant is well known to us as a courteous and pleasing young woman. She is Viee-President of the Girls' Athletic League and Choir member at the St. Philips Episcopal Church. Her husband is well liked, congenial and ambitious.
Rev. Father Cleghorn performed the ceremony. The bride's home on Kingsley Drive being the nook of choice. Only a few friends of the couple were present: Dr Robert N. Arthurton, best man; Miss Gwendolyn Baker, sister of the bride and Maid of honor; Mrs. Edw. Atkinson; Misses Alice Reed, Ethel Asbury; Bessie Walker, Iva Washington, and Mr. Lawrence Parker, and Miss Anna Lane. After the ceremony the party enjoyed an auto ride to Laurel Canyon and in a suitable spot under the glare of headlights from the machines feasted on Squabs etc. San Francisco was selected as the honey-moon city. Dr Frank A. Gordon joined the party en route.
Is it so? Miss Bessie Bruington is no more. No, not sadly so. but gladly.

As we expected before the time for such had expired on last Friday an independent candidate filed his papers to run for the Assembly in the 74th Assembly District.
But it will be of no avail, the Republican party cannot afford in this District to fall short of their duty by electing Fred Roberts.
Who has fairly won the nomination and who is in every way qualified for the position. We must all do our full duty and go to work and bring Fred Roberts over a winner by an unprecedented majority. Our answer to Mose Lowenstein will be certain and sure, with a majority for Roberts of 5000 votes.

Today the opening gun or the Fourth Liberty Loan Campaign is turned loose, and as the barrage is laid with timely precision, all America must move forth and do its full duty by going "over the top" as the boys are doing in France.
Every facility possible has been provided so that no one can possibly have an excuse for not doing his or her part. The colored people of this section have always come to the forefront in every call made by their government and on this, the Fourth Liberty Loan Campaign, it will be no exception, and when the final roll call has been made the result will show they too went "over the top."
THE LIBERTY LOAN FEEDS AND CLOTHES OUR SOLDIERS
Since the beginning of the war, we have spent for Army use $37,000,000, for flour; $14,000,000, for sugar; $43,000,000, for bacon; $12,000,000, for beans; $9,000,000, for canned tomatoes, and $3,000,000 for rice. These are only some of the large items in our Army's bill of fare. We have spent $126,000, 000, for shoes; over $500,000,000 for clothing, winter and summer; nearly $150,000,000, for blankets.
Our axes for the Army have cost over $6,000,000; our rolling kitchens $47,000,000 and field ranges $1,500,000. The Army is using 2,500,000 shovels costing $1 a piece. Our motor trucks to carry supplies and ammunition cost $240,000,000, and for horse-drawn wagons and carts, we have spent $37,000,000. Our 279,000 horses and 132,000 mules have cost us nearly $100, 000,000; to feed them has cost over $60,000,000, and the harness for them nearly $30,000,000.
These figures are large, but we have nearly 2,000,000 men in France and nearly as many in cantonments here, and the United States and the people of the United States, through the Liberty Loan are making these soldiers as safe and as comfortable, as powerful and effective as possible. Every subscriber to the Liberty Loan has helped, and every subscriber to the Fourth Liberty Loan will help to win the war.
RELATING TO OUR STATUS AT WASHINGTON D. C.
We have received many evidences of gratefulness for our reproduction of Nick Chiles' visit to the Nation's Capital, the people want to know the truth. As a matter of fact they don't want to be kidded neither do they want to kid themselves, and therefore they are grateful indeed to get the truth from one who is not afraid to tell it, and really this is the only reason we have for exploiting the same. We care not how big a man Emmett Scott or any other man is in the war or any other department, the higher and more powerful, the more pride we have in his rise as evidence of our pride in Mr. Scott a few months ago, when Hugh Gordon introduced a resolution in the Forum calling on Mr. Scott to resign, we opposed the resolution to the utmost, for at that time we had an abiding faith that everything was as represented. But as time flies, we know of his disinterest in so large a part of the people, and the revelations which come from time to time, we feel as the people that high sounding titles and special commissions are getting us nowhere. We feel as a prominent Judge in this country; who said to us anent the Nick Chiles Article that its too bad such an occurrence as an army officer being fined while in war business for riding in a pullman car and no redress had been obtained. Another reader writes us from Santa Monica thanking us for publication of the article and saying they knew that it is true for they too had been to Washington on a similar mission. And now let us hope that after all justice will assert itself and the same shall be rendered unto all alike. Go right in with the first rush, get your Liberty Bond early and be at ease, this duty reaches all alike, and the proposition is to let no one perform this function quicker than your-

It is as seed sown, we hope, in good soil and after many days will spring up, some sixty and some one hundred fold. It is providential that Mrs. Joshua came us just at the time that we were just opening our own eyes to the condition of the young negro woman and girl, and we are sure that the light that she did bring has illumined the way that we may more clearly see to walk therein.

Friends of the bride had interestingly watched the romance and the overwhelming barrage fire that the groom has been laying down from the offset only two months ago, but little realized that two months would bring about the capture and permanent possession of so charming an objective after which aspirants well-known to Los Angeles society had striven but failed to win even after years of the most appealing efforts.

MME. FLORENCE COLE-TALBERT RETURNED ENGAGEMENT.
Since her entry into the State and into the Music realm of California, Mine, Talbert has been received with open arms. So thoroughly did she thrill her hearers at Blanchard Haal, Sept. 9th, where she appeared for the first time upon this visit to her home-town, that many persons who were turned away, and many who heard her, have been constantly, asking when and where will she appear again?
The Young Women's Missionary Society of the New Hope Baptist Church, which organization brought Mine, Talbert to the Coast, has been

TENNIS CHATTER.
Mr. Joseph Bailey the one time terror to the Net Artists, and menace to the champions, blew into town last week and immediately started extraordinary proceedings against a possible victim and last Saturday managed to blind-fold, hand-cuff and drag our beloved Paul Williams to the opposite side of the net, but after two sets of very rough and ungentlemanly Tennis had been administered, our faithful Paul recovered consciousness just in time to avoid defeat, and after two more sets they both located white flags as the game stood—Bailey 6-4, 6-3; Williams 6-3; 6-4—"fifty-fifty, no casualties.
Although those two Caldwell sisters are hard to beat, Mrs. Henry Young and Miss Gilberta Turner are determined to turn the trick in the Ladies' Doubles Championship games at the Thanksgiving Day Tournament at the Alpha Courts.

AT THE FORUM SUNDAY.
Last Sunday a banner crowd attended the Forum. Every available seat was filled; they came to hear ideas announced along the lines of business efforts and eagerness was evident. For any movement along real business lines, and despite the fact that no prearranged set program was announced the crowd was in a hearty unison for any business propaganda which meant real progress. The proceedings were in charge of Mr. M. G. Stokes, he elected to discuss banking and real estate. after which Mr. Barringer spoke on co-operation along business lines. The crowd was so well pleased with what he said in a limited time that they voted to hear him again on next Sunday. Dr. Ruth Temple was next presented and received an ovation. She announced her opening on Wednesday and made a plain simple talk which placed her even higher up in the esteem of the people. Next Sunday along business lines will be continued and as the best always comes last no one should fail to be present on next Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Wm. S. Collins, age 38 years, of Austin, Texas, husband of Mrs. Sallie Anderson Collins, of Georgetown, Texas, and father of Master Lewis Collins, died at the St. Josephs Hospital, Sept. 16th. Funeral services were held at the Chappel of Bradley and Woolman, Rev. C. Williams of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church officiated.
Mrs. Ala Henry and daughter have gone to Los Angeles for an indefinite stay.
Mr. E. B. Whiteside has returned to this city again from an extended trip to Alaska, he is looking fine, and weighs over 200 pounds.
Mr. Jas. Johnson left Tuesday morning for Imperial Valley.
The B. Y. P. U. had a very interesting meeting on last Sunday evening. The subject was handled with much ease and very intelligently by Mr. Green of East San Diego, who had been asked to lecture to the young people. Everyone present certainly enjoyed every word that was said, and much inspiration was gained by the young people. Miss Mattie Mason recited "I Would not Live Always." A Trio was sung by Mrs. C. Williams, Mrs. Allen and Rev. C. Williams. The little Hallager girl, 4 years old recited the entire 1st and also 23rd Psalm. Mr. Hodge was introduced to the B. Y. P. U. as was also Mr. N. Cook and Mrs. Beatrice Covington Cook. We are very glad indeed to have the young people with us, and will try to keep them ever busy in doing something in the Church. Mr. Cook recited for the B. Y. P. U. the Books of the Bible from Geneses to Revelation. On next Sunday Mrs. Cook will play for the young people to sing, adn as we are without anyone to play for us, it will be a great treat to all.

NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH
Rev. G. W. Reed, Pastor.
7th and Harris Sts.
Two delightful services were held at the New Hope Baptist Church last Sunday. The Sunday School was well attended, the significance of the less-sonneemed to be apprehended by all. Pastor Reed preached at both services, in the morning he preached from2 Sam. 7:2—"See now I dwell in a house of Cedars, but the ark of God dwellther within curtains." His subject was "God's House and Our's." His first thought was, taking cognizance of God's house. Secondly the care of our homes compared with our care for-God's house. He said many of our churches are mere make-shifts and poorly kept, and the saintary condition was deplorable. The lawns unkept, seats covered with dust, while our private home were palaces. After God provided a way for us to get a home of our own, unlike David the author of our text, we forgot all about the giver, and cared nothing for His house.
Indeed the sermon had its desired results, for early Monday morning one of the deacons was seen with a scythe and rake cleaning the church grounds of weeds. This was a timely message and well received.
Everything is a-stir among the women of the church, getting things in shape for the opening of the big Fair and Bazaar, which is to begin Tuesday, Oct. 1st and continue for four days.
The Fair is to be a pretentious one. The first night a patriotic program will be rendered at which Gov. Stephens, Mrs. Bass of the Eagle, and Hon. Fredrick M. Roberts, colored candidate for the Legislature from the 75th District of Los Angeles, will speak. The program will also be replete with patriotic songs, drills, and instrumental numbers. There will be six artistically decorated booths, there will be on exhibit fancy patch work, land paintings, wood work, and fancy needle work. There will also be on display a handsome pair of gold-tipped knitting needles, a donation to the Fair by Mrs. Stephens. The same will be sold as a souvenir. The Fair will be held in the Woman's Club House on Sixth St.
Mrs. William Jones and mother,
Mrs. Pulman have returned home.
Brother Jones is all smiles.
Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Nash and
daughter Dorothy, Miss Tan Colman
and John Henry Davis and Israel Beal
of Redlands were worshippers at St.

Each member of the stock-holders is to donate one evening's service at the Parlor. The name will be "Texas Cafe."
San Bernardino gave a rousing reception for the four young men called to military service. After a short program ice-cream and cake were served to all present. A great crowd was out to give the boys a proper send-off. The San Bernardino boys were: Clarence Mackey and J. C. Anderson; the Riverside boys were: Jas Robinson and Nearoin Scott. Again St. Paul did her best Sunday the Choir sang beautifully, even though our chorister, H. B. Inghram, was absent on account of illness.
The spirit moved in the Sunday School in the morning and continuer throughout the day in the services. Rev. Hughes' subject at the morning service was "Walking by Faith." Rev. C. J. Lockett of Riverside preached for us at the evening service an excellent sermon, the subject being "Retrospection."
The Mite Missionary Society met at the home of Mrs. John M. Turner last Wednesday. They have taken up the work in earnest, having selected a series of Bible Missionary stories to be studied altrating with the regular program sent out for the Auxiliary Societies to use.

ck, when I know my back is aching? No one could be found in the world who would have more loving consideration for those suffering with disease and pain than a Christian scientist. Christian Science is not an admonition to bear suffering patient, or to endure it stolically, but is, on the contrary, a scientific system by which disease and pain are to be overcome; and it shows any person who anxiously studies and practices it, that we evidence of the senses is all there to any suffering, and if this evidence be changed or overcome, the disease or suffering disappears. Have you ever observed how the physical cases are so easily and commonly distaken and deceived? One of the most ordinary examples is that of sitting in a railroad train that Is sitting, and have a train on the adjacent back pass you going the other way. In you watch the moving train, every sense tells you that you are moving, and your escape from this delusion is to look away into the opposite direction, and then you see things they are. So when the human cases tell us that we are sick, we could look away from the things of ease to God, and see and know the real man as he is in God's image and keness, and we shall come to know that this real man cannot be sick or discord. In this manner of thought, God becomes a living, vital, per-present power and influence in our lives, and we can begin to realize what Paul had in mind when he said, "For in Him we live and move and have our being."
This brings me to a discussion of that man it is, and of his relation to God. I suppose that every careful reader of the Bible is familiar with the two very dissimilar accounts if man's creation, as detailed in the cook of Genesis. You will remember that the first chapter says: "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Christian Science teaches that this is the true account of creation. It sets forth the spiritual man. When Christian Science says that man cannot be sick, man cannot be the preference is made to the real man, the spiritual man, the God idea. The possibilities or man thus created in God's image and likeness are unlimited, such a man cannot possess any qualities that man has not, and he must in a degree, effect every attribute of God. Other systems of religious instruction have taught that the spiritual man is perfect, but they have not made this eaching practical. They have generally assumed that man must first pass through the experience called death, and after that, be invested with his spiritual nature. They have carefully dared to hope that life could be other than the generally accepted value of tears." Christian Science shows that the truth concerning the spiritual man, is scientific truth, and through Christian Science, it may be understood, and become operative in half of humanity. Christian Science teaches that God's presence in the lives of men is not a theory, but an actual fact, that may be, and should be relied upon in all circumstances and under all conditions. It teaches that God's Omnipotence, omnipresence, and Omniscience should be borne in mind by man as actual qualities for his benefit in every human survey and undertaking. This will be a wonderful world when men begin to realize their heritage, no envying, no jealousy, no auft finding, no judging, no coveting, where all is love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness. Man is the expression of goodness, of God's love, indeed, of all the qualities of God; and it is only through the perfect expression that we can know God. Was not this real man what Jesus had in mind when He said, "Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father in heaven's perfect?" Through the consideration of such facts, we may begin to have some conception of the bigness and the joy and freedom of this Christian Science teaching.
Let us turn now from this beautiful picture to the account of man's formation in the second chapter of Genesis, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul," and also the account of woman's creation, how God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he took from the man a rib and of the rib. He made a woman. With these two irreconcilable accounts before you, why do you hesitate to proclaim yourself and your race of the true type, the real man with God-given dominion and power over every living thing; for this power is also obtained by God in the twenty-eight grade of the first chapter of Genesis. Not this in harmony with the promises given by Jesus quoted in the beginning of this lecture, "Behold I
give unto you all power?" Does it occur to you that perhaps Jesus had in mind this early ordinance of God? Then as he had found the world steeped in materialism he proceeded to demonstrate by so-called miracles step by step, man's power to overcome all the power of the enemy.
This might be the subject of inquiry at this time: what is this enemy whose power we are to overcome? We find Paul saying, "The carnal mind is enmity against God." It is, therefore, this carnal or fleshly mind, or to use Mrs. Eddy's expression, the "mortal mind"—as opposed to the Spiritual Mind. Paul says: "For to be carnally minded is death: but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Then this carnal or mortal mind is the enemy we are to overcome. Mortal mind is a state of ignorance, and when it is the only mind that a human being has or knows anything about, it subjects him to every ill of which the flesh is heir, and this subjection is not decreased, but rather increased, by what is ordinarily called education, unless this education is carried on with the understanding of Christian Science. Mortal mind is full of fear, of doubt, anxiety, envy, hatred, malice, and what not of all this brood. It is no wonder that man governed by mortal mind is sick, or unhappy, or a thief or a murderer. All these things are but manifestations of fear and ignorance of the mortal mind. Jesus early in His ministry, told His disciples that they had power over this enemy, and this is easily understood; for anyone can see that in proportion as he becomes enlightened, he has power over ignorance, especially when he perceives that this same ignorance has constituted his own mentality. And do you wonder that Christian Scientists have learned the spiritual interpretation of the Bible, and realizing that this same power is possible for them, are grateful to Mrs. Eddy for discovering the way? Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science Text-book, has explained that the expression "mortal mind" is not really accurate. There is in reality but one Mind, the infinite, the divine. There are not minds many, just as there are not Gods many. As we live, move and have our being in this one Mind, no erroneous or harmful thought should come to us to be manifested in some discordant or ungodlike act. The expression mortal mind, for want of a more descriptive term, refers not to an entity, but to the lack of the one Mind. When man ceases to reflect the divine Mind, then the human senses so-called, have the ascendancy and man may seem to be sick or sinning; but it is only a seeming, only a counterfeit of the real, the eternal, the perfect, the God-Hike man. Our mission, our constant effort and prayer should be to let no imperfect impressions come to us—to look ever for the perfect, or as Mrs. Eddy says on page 261 of Science and Health, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." Is not this indeed what the prophet had in mind when he said of God, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil?"
At this point it may be in order to inquire what are man's chances for heaven with God who is Principle. Since God is Principle, we may be very sure that no man will reach heaven by reason of his skill at petitioning or by reason of any particular church or creed he may espouse. Salvation must of necessity be individual. No one can shirk his own responsibility, consequently that church is most helpful which instructs one best in scientific and saving Christianity. Jesus said, "the kingdom of heaven is at hand." After all our dreams of heaven high above, waiting for some mythical judgment day, it is much more simple and more comforting to find that heaven is here and now, is really at hand.
Heaven is not a place, but a state of consciousness governed by God, by divine Mind; and Christian Science teaches that man can be governed by God just now. To be governed by God, one may say, would mean quite a revolution of our lives. You will remember that Jesus said, "except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." One does need to turn away from the old things; the things of matter to the things of spirit. One needs to lay aside the "old man" of material sense, and put on the "new man" of spiritual consciousness. As Christian Scientists, we pray each day to have that Mind in us which was also in Christ Jesus, and in the measure that we are conscious possessors of that Mind, just in that measure are we coming into the realization of heaven or harmony. "But," says someone, "now you Christian Scientists are trying to take away our heaven, our hereafter." No, my friends, the truth about the matter is, all mankind has been superstitious about religion; men have been dosed all their

lives on impossible and unreasonable theological soothing syrups and bitter pills, and they were too lazy or too indefentive or too superstitious to inquire whether or not these things were true. Men have been afraid, for instance, to ask themselves, "what is God, or what is heaven?" No one will dispute God's infinite intelligence then a God of intelligence will surely create His own image and likeness with like intelligence, and surely He will not be offended with us if we seek to know what He is. Needless to say, the finite cannot comprehend the Infinite, but we can at least come to some sensible and reasonable conclusions, some that will satisfy and not leave us filled with doubts and fears. Is it not comforting to accept Jesus at His word and realize this kingdom of heaven now? Why should we postpone heaven if God has not? If God is willing that we should enter into this blissful state now, why should we insist that it is not yet time; why insist on crossing the dark river first, as we have been taught to believe we must? Eternity is now here, it always has been, and will ever be; and no change that may or can come to us can effect our relation to eternity. Most men have a natural dread of death, and yet here they are insisting that they must die to reach heaven, when Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." Paul, in speaking of the Christ as overcoming, says: "the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." Are we not hastening the time of this destruction by following in Jesus' footsteps? Can this final enemy be destroyed until we have possessed the Mind of Christ? "But," says one, "Do you mean to say that salvation is a matter of knowledge, a mental) condition?" Precisely so, for Jesus said, "and this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent."
The more study we devote to the question of God and His creation, the more inevitably are we led to the conclusion reached by Mrs. Eddy and stated so succinctly, "There is no life, truth, intelligence nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." (Science and Health, page 468.) Of course the average man has been accustomed to think of matter as about the most substantial thing he knows, but that is largely because the subject hasn't been called sharply to his attention, and he hasn't thought it through. Most of you remember dimly maybe, from your school days of chemistry or physics, about matter being always reducible to some infinitesimal something called atoms. Of course the atom was far too small to be seen or comprehended, but that was the last division, and matter was said to be composed of atoms. NOW, the physical scientists tell us that the reduction goes beyond the atom into sub-atoms or ions or electrons, and as nearly as these can be described they are currents or movements, denoting energy or force. I leave it to your conclusion as to whether that theory impresses you with the belief of any real substance in matter. Mrs. Eddy reached her conclusion by a very different process. She began with the statements of the Bible, that God is Spirit, is Mind, that God created all, therefore as like must of necessity result from like, there was no possibility of anything being created except the God-like, the spiritual, the mental; and nothing else was, is, or can be real or substantial. The Bible record tells us that God saw everything that He had made, and behold it was very good. That is the Christian Science authority for saying that only the good is real. As understood in Christian Science, creation is not the result of, or the process of making or forming scientifically explained, creation is revelation. Mrs. Eddy speaks of creation as the unfolding of spiritual idae.
As Christian Scientists are sometimes'criticised for denying the reality of the so-called devil and evil—let us proceed with this reasoning. All will agree that God is good and that He has all power, and that, being good and having all power, He has made all things good; and the record says He pronounced all things as very good. Then where does your evil originate? God didn't create it. But, you say, what about the devil? Certainly God didn't create a devil to undo or make for naught the work of His own might. Is it not pretty clear to you, my friends, that you cannot locate the devil by any reasonable theory? You cannot say he just happened to exist. You must conclude that there is one God and no devil, or that God is not omnipotent and that there is another supreme power that is evil or devil, and opposed to God, which thought is unbelievable.
But, you say, what will you do with the Satan or devil of the Bible? What did Jesus say, of him. "He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own, for he is

a liar, and the father of it." (John 8: 44.) Is not this the weightiest testimony to the falsity, the nothingness of the belief in any actual devil or source of evil? Think what a world of fear, sorrow, unrest, sickness, suffering and death this supposed Satan has brought to humanity. It is strange how unready many of us are still, to deny him and to claim and prove God's allness. When we come to analyse the beliefs and practices of men for centuries, we find that they have been mainly impelled by fear of some power that was superior to God, or could in some way outwit God. This is witnessed on every hand; for instance, men build fortunes and amass large sums of money that no want or lack may come to them or their families for generations after their own lives. Surely men would not bend every energy, work night and day, drive sharp bargains, starve their employees for the piling up of money, unless they attached value thereto. Nothing could more clearly indicate their distrust in God's ability or willingness to provide their loved ones with all their needs. No fallacy has been more universally exposed in the lives and experiences of men than this; for did not Jesus say, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you," for our guidance in this respect? Then, when men have an ache or a pain, do they seek the help of Him who is all powerful or do they for the most part seek the aid of material relief? Mute testimony this, to their distrust of God's ability to overcome some power opposed to Him. But what a mournful testimony is given in the Bible history of King Asa, who sought material help for disease, for says the record: "Yet in his disease, he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers."
Christian Science is trying to help men to see and to understand that for every need, one should look to God, to the spiritual, and not to the material. But one may say, "Wd do get some material relief." Yes, but it is only temporary, whereas, if one in Christian Science understands the nothingness and powerlessness of any so-called sickness or evil, he is not only relieved, but is less likely to experience the same false belief again. If one knows that sickness has no power, he will cease to fear it, and with the overcoming of fear, one of the great producers of disease disappears. Christian Science teaches us that there is nothing to fear, for God is all in all. One cannot fear God or good. Indeed, John said, "perfect love cast-tech out fear."
The text-book, commonly called Science and Health, was written by Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, and was first published in 1875. It contains a chapter devoted to Genesis, and another to the Apocalypse or Revelation of St. John, wherein is set forth the spiritual and proper interpretation of the Bible, thus justifying that part of its title, "Key to the Scriptures." The last chapter called Fruitage, which has been added to the earlier editions, is a series of wonderful letters and testimonies from men and women from widely separated localities, testifying to having been healed of blindness, deafness, rheumatism, brights disease, tumor, dyspepsia, stomach aroule, cancer, tuberculosis, fevers, and nearly every known disease, simply by reading the book, Science and Health. The practical tribute to this book is to be seen in the fact that it is found in nearly any public library, in every Christian Science Reading Room and is available to any person who is interested. The book itself tells its own story better than can anyone for it. For me, it has illuminated the Bible, and revealed it as a storehouse of profitable and life-giving truth, from which can be drawn supply for every human emergency. That its perusal and study have brought health, happiness and regeneration to a great number of people cannot be denied. Mrs. Eddy never intended that it should take the place of the Bible, but be read and studied in connection therewith. Critics of Christian Science have sometimes said that its followers do not read the Bible. No criticism could be more unjust. Christian Scientists

study the text-book and the Bible conjointly. Provision for this plan of study is made in the Christian Science Quarterly, wherein are found side by side, references to passages from the Bible and from Science and Health, which are read at the Sunday services in every Christian Science Church. Knowledge of the Bible and familiarity with its contents on the part of Christian Scientists is plainly witnessed by attending any Wednesday evening testimonial meeting in a Christian Science Church, where nearly every speaker refers in connection with his healing to some passage from the Bible, and how it has been made applicable to his problem through spiritual understanding as gained from the study of Science and Health.
As a treatise on philosophy, science and religion, the Christian Science text-book has been subjected since its first appearance to the most unsparing and searching criticism. Physicians, preachers, editors and teachers have tried to prove its teaching to be fallacious and tried to accomplish its destruction, but it has stood the test, and is today being published and far more widely circulated than ever before, and is perhaps more universally read and studied than any other publication except the Bible. Its use is not at all confined to those who are members of Christian Science organizations, but it is read and prized by teachers, preachers, doctors and others, many of whom, who while not ready to accept its teachings fully and publicly, are nevertheless, being surely led by reading it to higher planes of thinking and living. I believe it would not be saying too much to claim that the Christian Science text-book has leavened and is leavening the thought of the whole world.
In connection with this mention of the text-book of Christian Science, it will interest you to hear something of the activities of the Christian Science organization. At Boston, Mass., is located the Mother Church, which was founded by Mrs. Eddy, and from which emanates inspiration and direction for the Christian Science movement all over the world. From this vine have sprung all the branch churches and societies throughout

more clearly show than this one, all
the attributes of the flesh, greed, scl-

pride, arrayed on one side against the
spiritual ideals of the other. As in
every conflict between the unreal
forces called evil and the realities of
good, so in this struggle, no other re-
sult is thinkable or conceivable than
the triumph of géod, of Principle; for
has not the inspired writer said, “And
we know that all things work togeth-
er for good to them that love God, to
them who are the called according to
His purpose." That there has been
more savagery, more uncivilized and
ungodly practices in this war than in
any other of modern times, is but
further evidence that the hideousness
of error, will eventually destroy one
of error, will eventually destroy it-
self. As Mrs. Eddy says, “the only
power of evil is to destroy ‘ itself.”
It can never destroy one iota
of godd. Every attempt of evil
fota of good. Every attempt of evil
to destroy good Is a failure, and only
aids in peremptorialy punishing the
evil doer.” (Science and Health,
page 186.) Christian Scientists in
considering the problems and ques-
tions raised by the war, are compell-
ed, as in all other Kuman discords, to
look to God for the final solution, for
did fot the prophet ptold say, “Thou
wilt keep him in perfect peace whose
mind is stayed on thee?”
This leads to a-consideration of
prayer. Christian ‘Science has given
to the, world a sensible and reason-
able idea of prayer, one in keeping
with the dignity and allness of Om-

[marveted indeed until one has won-
dered if one would ever attempt such
js style of prayer again for one’s own
needs. Perhaps out of a multitude of
blessings fit--have come to me
through the study of Christian Scl-
ence, the angat satisfactory one has
been that'l Have Feared how to pray
Christian Scienge has taught me what
Jesus meant when ‘He said: “Your
Father Knoweth what things ye have
need of, before ye ask Him.” Pray-
er, as understood in Christian Sci-
Jence, is not ail effort to inform the
Indnite, nor to invite His interfer.
ence in the affairs of men. It is rath-
er an effort on our part to realize, re-
cognize and be conscious of ever pre-
sent Love, and to know that infinite
Power and Wisdom is being reflected
/by us. It isan effort-o know and un-
erst that there is no reality or
power ine¥ff or in a‘belief of evil. It
is to know“énd “understand that all
good is meant for God's children, and
nothing can prevent its manifestation.
It is rather a process of affirmation
and of realization than of .petitian.
It is not to ask God to take a hand
for us, but to know that His Omnip-
otence exists for our benefit, and to
bring ourselves into harmony with
God's plan that we may avail our-
elves of fis power. With this thought
prayer becorhes of necessity, “Not
man’s wiil be done, but God's” We
| may be sure that no other prayer will
find an answer. Christian Scientists

when He sald, “Men ought al-
ways to pray,” and a Christian Sci-
entist is constaiitly in prayer, that he
may kebp his thought free‘of all that
js unworthy, and filled with all that
is Godlike. Mrs. Eddy has, in a few
words, in the opening sentence of Sei-
ence and Health, covered the whole
ground of ptayer. “The prayer that
‘reforms the sinner and heals the sick
is an absolute faith that all. things
are possible to God—a spiritual un-
[derstanding of Him, an unselfed
love.”

Christ cannot be confined to an indiv-
fdual any'more than can divine Prin-
ciple or God, but comes as the spirit
of Truth, of God, to..men as. they
rightly seek Him and desire Him. It
is true that-qesps sald, “I and my
Father are qne,” but this expression
4s not at all inconsistent, with Jesus’
other statements concerning himself.
He was one with the, Father, as ex-
plained in the Christian Science text-
book, as a drop of water is one with
the ocean, but it is not the ocean. Or
a ray of light is one with the sun, but
it te not the sun. So is every man, as
an idea of God, one with the Father,
else how could Paul-have heen cor-
rect yhen he said: “For in Him we
live and move and have our being?”
When Jesus said, “Come unfo me, all
ye that labor and are heavy Jaden,”
it is not tothe human Jesuf he was
asking us to come, but to the Christ,
Truth, which redeems and saves. To
those of us who have but touched the
hem of his garment, have but caught
a taint glimpse of this (Christ that

inediaté Tqllowers of Jésus saw clear-
ly tho:distinction between the huinan
Jesus und the Christ idea; but Mrs.
Eddy has made this clear in her
teactfings. The man-Jesus, was hu-
man, born of Mary, and his ‘life cov-
ered but a brief span of years; but
the Christ which was not a name so
mich as the, divine title of Jesus, ex-
pressing his Godlike nature, is etern-
jal, “Without beginning of years or
‘end of days,”” and is ever inseparable
from God. Jesus, inrefering to him-
self as the Christ, sald, “I am ¢he way,
the truth and the lite,” “Before Abra-
‘ham was, 1am,” and agai, “Lo, I am
with you always, even unto the end
of the world.” The Christ is now and
always has beem present in the world,
‘to be discerned atid demonstrated by
‘men. Jesus, the man, came to earth
to be the Way-shower or as Paul says,
the mediator between God and man.
He.proved that men may.realize theft
opportunity inthe flesh, to overcome

it than any other person who has ev-
er lived, and he ts therefore called
