THE ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL EXERCISES. Sunday at 3 o'Clock the monster memorial exercises honoring the memory of the greatest of all Americans will be held at the Shriners Auditorium, to which the public is invited. A splendid program has been arranged, on which all classes of our citizenship have been given recognition. Dr. A. P. Shaw and Dr. H. D. Prowd have places on the program, while Capt. F. H. Crumley, Noah D. Thompson and others have been named as Vice-Presidents for the occasion. Forum Will Also Observe The Day The Forum will also fittingly observe the day by presenting a special program for the occasion, as the program will hardly start until 5 o'Clock, those attending the big meeting at Shriners Auditorium can also get to the Forum in time for these exercises. A special program will be given NOW IN BORDEAUX FRANCE Recceived by Atty. H. E. Macbeth. Bordeaux France, Dec. 28th. 1918 Atty. Hugh E. Mcbeth, My Dear Friend Mac: I confess that had I kept the line of duty, I would have written you ere this time; but since I have not kept it, with this confession I shall not further apologize, but shall continue my letter. I am quite sure that you know of my entrance in the Y. M. C. A. work as a secretary and of my transfer to this country. I arrived here on the 16th. of Nov. and went immediately The California Eagie by rail to Paris where I spent two weeks. Since I came to France, (and especially do I refer to Paris France) I have found here a new and strange people of the caucasion race, strange in customs, strange in ideas, and especially strange in their interpretation of what democracy means, as compared with what I have been trained of it's meanings in the States. To say that I fell in love with Paris, is only expressing my feelings and admiration for that city and its people in a mild form. Every hotel Cafe restaurant or other public places are open to everybody regardless of race, color or creed. Your priviliges are only limited by the capacity of your pocket book. The French people have never had a conception of race predjudice as related to us, yet I would remind you that this "Demon" this angel of Hell is being forced upon this people by others who world that our liberties and freedom be quenched even in France. However I can truthfully say that such conditions have received no official approval by those who are in power. I am sure that you will appreciate the fact that I am in Government employment and would not wish to betray the trust that they have in me therefore I cannot write you my full impressions of these delicate matters but hope to be able to fully explain when I see you again. I am now stationed here in a camp near Bordeaux where there are about 5000 Negro soldiers. I find the work both profitable and pleasant; although I might say that I am inclined to believe that nothing would please these boys better now than the information that they are to come home immediately. (Continued on page 3) LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, SATURDAY FEBRUARY 8, 1919 THE OLDEST LARGEST and LOS ANGELES, CA PA the Memo RUSSELL AND CONNOR UNDER- TAKING COMPANY AND ITS RE-ORGANIZATION. With the elimination of the E. H. Russell from the Russell and Connop Undertaking Company, located at 1700 E. 17th St, and the fact that Simon P. Johnson has become one of the Stockholders of the same, is a guarantee that this firm will indeed be a high credit to the citizens of this community, along with the other business efforts of this line of endeavor. Mr. Johnson bears an enviable record for integrity and honesty, which is assurance that the business of this corporation will be conducted along the lines of clean and high-class business effort. Mr. Johnson decided to enter into the business after thoroughly investigating Mr. Connor's ability as an Embalmer and Funeral Director, and finding him to be thoroughly qualified. Mr. Johnson has served the public for more than 17 years, ever ready to assist in anything for the uplift of the race, and is responsible for many Organizations—Religious. Fraternal, and otherwise, that are now doing great work for the advancement of race and community; in many of his public speeches he has laid stress upon the saying: "Give the World the best you have and the best will come back to you." Thus Mr. Johnson has done in every way, we therefore feel that he is quite deserving of any consideration his friends and the public in general can give him as a business man. His success in the management of affairs for the past years in our city, his desire to please with whom he has to deal, together with Mr. Connor's unquestioned ability, and manner of dealing with the public bepeaks for them success as business men. CHARLES D. CONNOR Mr. Charles D. Connor, the embalmer of Russell and Connor Undertaking Firm, 1400 E. 17th St. has successfully embalmed more than 1700 bodies in Los Angeles and the East. The laws of this State require men of the profession to stand an examination and at this examination Mr. Connor passed with a high mark of 96 per cent and the work he has done in Los Angeles, and is now doing is a sufficient estimate of his ability. GREAT MASS MEETING AND RE- CEPTION The men and women of the city will assemble next Tuesday evening at Wesley M. E. Church to do honor to Assemblyman, F. M. Roberts. The general committee which conducted the Roberts' Campaign will have charge of the reception. J. C. Anderson is chairman of the General Committee, and Editor J. B. Bass is at the head of the Executive Committee, J. H. Shackelford, Treasurer, and J. L. Jarrett, Secretary. Mr. Roberts is attempting to put through legislation in the interest of Southern California, Los Angeles and his district. When you hear from his own lips of the bills which he has introduced, you will see that he has not overlooked the interest of his race as well. Let us make this a great occasion and mock the trite saying that a prophet is not without honor save in his own home. J. L. JARRETT, Secr RACE JOURNAL IN THE WEST FEBRUARY 8, 1919 TRI ol. Theodor A LECTURE ON CHRISTIAN SCIENCE entitled Christian Science The Revelation Of Truth BY Blanche K. Corby, C. S. B. Member of the Board of Leadership of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. The message that Christian Science brings to the world today is one of good cheer; it is one of hope, comfort, and salvation. To a world stricken with suffering, Christian Science offers deliverance from all the discords of life. Every one desires to live because life is natural and normal, and a knowledge of the best means whereby life may be conserved and made harmonious is indeed most worthy of our thought and consideration. Humanity generally has not looked to God for daily and hourly help in times of trouble. It has not believed that God is available under all conditions and circumstances; but there is no human condition so desperate, no disease so obstinate that man cannot be released through divine aid, for God who is Love, is all powerful. Man's understanding of God reaches the pinnacle when he declares and knows that God is Love. This synonym for God is the highest concept of him, the tender, compassionate sense which was expressed by Christ Jesus in his work. Because Christian Scientists no longer have a personalized, limited sense of God, but speak of him as Divine Principle, the objection is sometimes made that this term applied to deity seems abstract and cold, but as the true meaning of the word principle is the basis or foundation which governs all that proceeds from it, we find that the term is a most appropriate one for God. Every thinking person is cognizant of things that exist; because of his belief in the existence of things, he believes that there is a first cause or creator. Christian Science proclaims that God is cause of all created things. It declares as Omnipresence and Omnipotence, the all-inclusive infinite One, or, as Mrs. Eddy so comprehensively states, "The Adorable One" including all life, law, power, intelligence, and action. This all-inclusive Omnipotence or the One Presence is best understood as Mind. The one omnipotent Mind or one conscious Being is expressed after its own kind, then all that expresses it must be mental because the activity of mind is thought. Everything is mental, whether upon a good or evil, a spiritual or material plane. All that we are conscious of today is the result of thought, that we exist as mortals is the result of thought that has gone before. All the history of the past and all present human activity are mental. Every human achievement—every discovery brought to light—is the result of somebody's thought. If it were possible for thought to cease on earth today, complete inaction, which is death, would result. All that engages man's attention, the daily routine, business, home and family, the great manufacturing activities, agricultural development, all the pursuits of life, would cease. Every complaint of the body is expressed through thought. If man could not think he could not be conscious of bodily pain and discomfort; it is only as all things are resolved into ```markdown ``` For information leading up to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons guilty of malicious or libelous remarks about Dr. Eugene C. Macbeth, 221 Lissner Building, who will co-operate with the attorneys of the California Medical Association, and the Los Angeles County Medical Association, of which the Doctor is a member, in prosecuting the case. thought, into mental conditions, that the mystery of evil disappears. All wrong thought with its discordant results can be corrected by right thinking which can be continued only from the standpoint of changeless Truth, Divine Principle or-spiritual unfoldment. Salvation Salvation is gained through right thinking. Many theories of salvation have been presented to the world, but only one has proved satisfactory and unfalling. Christ Jesus came as the way-shower declaring and demonstrating a full and complete salvation. Jesus did not teach that a man must die in order to be saved or to reach God; nowhere in the Scriptures is found any authority that he considered evil and death at all necessary or in accord with divine law; but he did say, "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." When the beginner in Christian Science reads in the Scriptures that God pronounced his creation good; that he was satisfied with it; that he was entirely satisfied with man made in his own image and likeness; that this man was given dominion over all the earth; the question is sure to arise, what has taken place that man is not expressing his God-given dominion today. Christian Science reveals to this age the fact that nothing has happened to weaken destroy man's God-given dominion. It is impossible that man, made in the image and likeness of God could fall into evil and sin, yet the belief that he did so fall has caused all of the sorrow and suffering on earth. The beginner further asks, "If God is Infinite Good, where did evil come from, what is its cause and origin?" When we learn to think in accord with Divine Mind, we find that evil in individual consciousness disappears and that, therefore, the only cause for evil or sin is a false belief, a wrong thought, and not a spiritual fact. In the degree that man ceases to think evil, evil and sin disappear; and proportionately as that disappearance takes place, goes all the mystery of evil, all its presence and power. Healing The first step toward freedom from evil is generally taken through the desire for physical healing. The healing method of Christian Science, the healing method used by Jesus, is unique, but there is no mystery, nothing supernatural about it. It is the simple teaching of Jesus, the spontaneous and natural result of better thinking. The physical healing in Christian Science is not for the purpose of making a man more com- THE PEOPLE'S FORUM FOR UPLIFT. ALL MEN UP NO MAN DOWN NUMBER 52 velt fortable in materiality, of enabling him to eat more food without discomfort, or to indulge more freely in appetites and passions, but the whole purpose of healing is to reveal the truth about life. It heals the sick to establish the fact of the reality of God or good, and it heals the sinner to prove the unreality of sin or evil. Christian Science does not teach that sickness and evil do not seem real to the human consciousness; but it teaches that the human consciousness is a false consciousness expressing itself according to its false beliefs in all the phenomena of evil and sickness, and that healing through a correction or overcoming is accomplished through the understanding of God and his law. Throughout human history man has deified himself, he has created God in the image and likeness of a mortal instead of finding that he himself is the image and likeness of God. Because God has been believed to be a mighty man manifesting jealousy, anger, revenge, visiting his wrath upon his people; the belief that might is right has grown to the utmost. As the result, human history is a record of the cruelty of the human will. Since the days of Pharoh, prominent characters have wielded the iron rod of tyranny and despotism as exemplified by Xerxes, when he commanded his soldiers to shout as they laughed the waves of the Hellespont, "Xerxes, thy master, bids thee be still;" until today, we see the worst propensities of man incorporated into some forms of government as law. It is because of the deification of the mortal or material mind and its beliefs, that the statement is sometimes ignorantly made that the healing of Christian Science is wrought thru suggestion, or the action of the human mind,—one mind controlling another human mind. In order to correct this accusation made against Jesus' healing works, he said, "If I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out?" (Matt. 12:27) showing that evil cannot correct evil. The human mind, unillumined, and uninstructed in spiritual law, cannot possibly understand spiritual healing, or the means by which it is accomplished; so it insists that it must be after its own method, the operation of the human will through hypotism or what is popularly called modern psychology. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Leson—"Israel Fed with Manna in the Wilderness," was heartily entered into and beautifully explained by both Mr. Groves and the Superintendent, Mr. S. P. Johnson. At 11 o'Clock the pastor gave opportunity to the members for heart expressions concerning God's dealings with them, and the responses were sincere and inspiring. Our brother the Rev. Mr. Pettigrew of Oxnard was with us and took part in the service. The Young People's Meeting was remarkably attended when we consider weather conditions. The Topic was taken up and discussed by all. The enclence weather prevented many from coming to the night service. It is a matter of sorrow and regret that we have to record the passing of one of our girls from the Sunday School, Inez Watson, daughter of Officer and Sister Watson. Young and promising and with so much to look forward to, this child whose excellent behaviour charmed us all, has just been snatched away, hardly anyone outside of the immediate family knew that she was ill. Our deep sympathy goes out to all the bereaved ones. Come early on Sunday and come praying for a blessing. H. DARIUS PROWD, Pastor. FIRST A. M. E. CHURCH NOTES (Cor. 8th and Towne Ave.) J. The pastor preached two soul-stirring sermons at the morning and evening services. The Holy Communion was administered at both services to a large number of communicants. The members and friends of the church are working very zealously under the present conditions to do the work of the church. The church conference on Monday was a very profitable meeting. The work of the church was reviewed and found to be in a healthy condition. Quite a number of the members are on the sick list and the pastor and congregation are praying that they may soon be restored to us. The members of Stewardess Board number Two were royally entertained at the home of Miss Alva Jacobs. Those who were present voted Miss Jacobs a charming hostess. Strangers and visitors are especially welcome to the services of the church. Come where a welcome awaits you and where the old time fire is burning. The pastor will preach at both services on the coming Lord's Day. The pastor and officers are expecting the membership out in force. HAMLITON METHODIST CHURCH (Cor 18th and Naomi Ave.) Rev. V. M. Greggs, D. D., Pastor Despite the inclement weather on last Sunday, two very inspiring services were held at this church. At the morning session the pastor spoke from th text, Isaiah 53:5—"But he was wounded for the Dauntless Three." The scriptural reference was the three Hebrew children in the fiery furnace. Both sermons were greatly edifying and were well received. Three united with the church, one of whom was happily converted. Communion day was observed and the Holy Sacrament was administered to a large number. The collection for the day amounted to $150.94 The music by the choir was up to the usual high standard. At the evening service a very inspiring solo was rendered by Mrs. Turner of Pasadena. NOTES OF THE FIRST A. M. E. ZION CHURCH. Rev. J. E. Last Sunday was a high day, despite the threatening weather. We are compelled to provide larger quarters, as many friends crowd our aisles and strangers knock at our door. The happy saints restified of the liberal dispensation of God's grace; while shouts and hosannahs awoke the echoes of other years. Pastor Helt spoke briefly from the subject: "Keep your word." Among other things he said: "We must account unto God for all we say; broken vows are veiled lies; he who vows for the purpose to deceive, lies to the Holy Ghost." In the afternoon service, pastor Holt baptized three candidates who were converted in the 4th Sunday services, at which time eight persons, including one white gentleman and another who for three years denounced the Bible and the Christian Religion preaching on the streets of this city. Rev Payne preached a very feeling sermon on baptism at 3 p.m. Sunday School and B. Y. P. U. were well attended. The evening closed with Communion services. CHRISTIAN CHURCH Favorably was the contribution made to the services of our church last Lord's Day. Notwithstanding the continuous illness of faithful ones of our membership, we were fairly well represented. At 11:00 a.m. the pastor presented a very instructive and helpful message. January 12, 1919, Mr. G. G. Hamilton, energetic and prosperous farmer and cotton grower of Darling, Mississippi, arrived in Los Angeles with his family, consisting of his devoted wife, one girl, one boy and a son-in-law. Mr. Hamilton is a native of Franklin County, Mississippi, and for many years was a cotton-grower in Quitman County. While there, he was prominent in church work, being a member of the African Methodist Church and of Masonic and Odd-flows Lodge Circles. The most of Mr. Hamilton's business dealings were transacted in Marks, Mississippi. One of the actual occurrences witnessed by Mr. Hamilton in Marks, Miss. not a very great while, according to the narrative as related by Mr. Hamilton to Attorney Willis O. Tyler, is as follows: A colored man by the name of Williams, having carried his cotton to town in the month of October (1917), found himself, strange to say, in possession of seven bales of cotton over and above his annual rents and multitudinous obligations to store-keepers, merchants and other "honorable twonsmen". These seven bales of cotton were piled in the cotton yards at Marks, and while William swas trying to dispose of them by sale, they being worth approximately $560.00, a white man by the name of Rivers, a native of Marks and a resident there, seized upon Williams' cotton and laid claim to it and took possession of it. Williams said to him,—"Why take possession of my cotton? I do not owe you anything, and it is mine and all I have left for my year's labors." To this, the white citizen of the "dear old south" replied—I will show you why I take possession of it." He thereupon seized an are handle and began to beat and maul Williams ov- ```markdown ``` Los Angeles, Cal. 100 er the head. This fight continued until Williams, all the while retreating, gained possession of another axe handle, whereupon two other white men joined in the fray, taking the part of the white man, and the three of them not only beat Williams until he retreated from them, but they then turned upon his wife who was pregnant at the time, and beat her so brutally and barbarously, that she died in three days as a result therefrom and without having been delivered of the child she was carrying. There is no wonder, says Attorney Tyler, that Mr., Hamilton sees fit to leave the "dear old south" and seek safety for himself and family in the more civilized portions north of Mason and Dixon's line. Tomorrow, and perhaps today, the men who perpetrated this barbarous murder of the innocent woman will come to Los Angeles perhaps and set in the lobbies of our hotels and tell the citizens of the north, that they know more about solving the color problem of the south and outlining and maintaining the treatment that should be accorded Negroes, than the people of the north. The brutalities of the German high command that led to the cataclysm of the world's war were not more barbarous or atrocious than was the deliberate theft of William's cotton, the murderous assault made upon him, and the brutal murder of his pregnant wife. Perhaps there will come a time in America when God in His Infinite wisdom will make the south a safe place for people to live in. Mr. Hamilton is at present stopping at 624 Ceres Avenue, this city. He says thre is one white man of honesty in Mark, and that he is the Sheriff, more of him later. It is the duty of our Race folk here to see that he meets a cordial welcome in Los Angeles, and is granted the benefits of the progress and civilization to which those of his brethren who have come on before. After a sermonnet on this theme, the meeting was given over to testimonies and singing. The spiritual influence which was kindled in the beginning spread like wild fire, and the church became illuminated with the Glory of God. inspiring. If each step’ in the solution of a problem were mentally imposed upon the more yielding thought of the child, he would not be trained to think for himself; on the contrary, he would be schooled in the habit of responding to suggest- fon from without. The pupil, to be Jalert and progressive, must be taught to think correctily, he must be free from pergonal domination and con: Es of the teacher. In Ike manner, the Christian Science practitioner [snare that the human will must be divorced from every Christian Science treatment; indeed the human will lcould not give a Christian Science |treatment. The practitioner's part in |the healing work is to reveal to the patient the science, or truth of being, Ea this truth at work in the con- |sclousness of the suflerer heals and ‘saves. Evil, a fundamental quality of | the human mind, belleying as ft does in both good and cyl, cannot heal. It is wholly rok | the action and operation of apittual law that the sick are aealed. Christian Science treatment creates a desire to know and to do the will of God. It js re- generating in its influence. Mesmer- fe suggestion and bypotism weaken the subject’s ability to do what is Srcht. His subjection to another mentality is in itself an evil. Heal- ing {s not accomplished through con- centration or holding the thought for others, but through concentration of thought and purpose and love for God and man. The reading of the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health, with Key to the Scrip- tures” had cured: thousands of sick- ness and sin; one hundred pages of the book contain testimonials of heal- ing through the reading alone. No mesmeric suggestion was used by the book to accomplish such results, no human domination or contro! was exercised, but the revelation of truth contained in those pages opened the understanding, and healing followed as a natural consequence. ‘The objection 1s sometimes made that Christian Selence practice does not take into account the symptons of disease, It does*however, recognize the symptoms but only to analyze the mental cause which has produced the physical suffering. If the mental cause is found to be hatred, fear, re- sentment, grief, or anxiety, what Dyescf}ption could be administered thternally, or what application could be applied outwardly that could pos- sibly correct such cause of diease? Because the popular forms of heal- ing deul with the effect instead of the cause, there is a long list of what are called incurable diseases; incur- able, only because some men- have ‘sala thet they cannot cure them. Je- sus never said that disease is incur- able, but instead said to the woman who had been bound together for many years, “Satan hath bound thea;” {n other words, her belief in evil bad caused her physical infirm- ity. The majority of cures wrought by Christian Science have -heen of disease pronounced incurable, and the great ranks of Christian Scientists today are composed largely of those who have been compelled to turn to God for ald because some man has said he could not heal them. Happy day when one learns that man cannot heal, ‘but that God,can apd does. Fear attends his advent into the world-and throughout his life he is educated to be afraid; afraid of the food he eats, the air he breathes, and of the wind that blows; he is, afraid of bis brother. man, afraid of: his own bélly, and afraid of Ged: Lit- tle wonder thet he is sick and in trouble. Christian Science reveals that God’s universe including’ man’ was created without fear, therefore fear is without hope and without'God, and anything without God has no, real existence, God being the only Creator. Christian Selence says to the sorrowing and fearful, you are suffering only from false: beliefs, the result of ignorance and fear; ignor- ance of the changeless laws of God, Good, and fear of the ever-changing laws of man. To give an example of the Instability of the laws of man, @ former ganeration considered to- matoes a deadly poison, while today they are recommended ‘ as a most wholesome food. The Christian Scl- ence practitioner knows that man needs to be-freed from ignorance and fear, which he recognizes as the pre- ‘disposing cause of diease. The sick ‘are healed to establish the fact of tha reality of good and the unreality of error. The healing in Christian Scl- ence is not confined to physical heal- ing alone, but may be applied throughout the whole ringe of hu- man experience. It is indeed so in- tensely practical that is can be used in the routine of everyday life. Since God is the only Cause or Creator, all real law emanates from bim, and there is no peace or safety in living in disobedience to his law. The en- gineer who spans the yawning chasm over which great trains are rushed in safety, owes his accomplishment to absolute obedience to the laws gov- erning construction. These laws were in existence th prehistoric days, bat man was Hmited’ because of his ig- norance of them. Christian Science is the religion of opportunity. When it is understood that “opportunity is a divine idea, therefore boundless and unlimited, and that it is always Knocking at the door of conscious- ness, man. will enjoy success instead of failure, and when he knows suc- cess from the standpoint of Princi- ple, he will be able to understand the failures of the past and profit thereby. : One of the greatest torments that beset mankind is tho fear of lack. The law of Infinite Mind includes no pro- vision for poverty and lack. Christian Science teaches that the amplitude of God 1s the suffictent supply of man enabling him to be fed and clothed and 1s the true substance which is changeless and inperishable. Jesus, the man of God, knew no lack nor aiation He turned water into /wine when there seemed to be a lack at the marriage feast, he multiplied the loaves and the fishes when the multitudes believed there was no bread, he found gold in the fish's mouth when the disciples said there ‘was no money for taxes. Through- out his whole career he constantly ‘supplied the needs of bumanity, prov- ing that God {s a.God of abundance; o at the most crucial moment in his whole career, when forsaken of men, even by his own disciples, Je- sus was forced to prove the abund- ance of lite by overcoming death on the cross. When he declared, “Thy will be done,” he overcame death, because in declaring the will of God he declared the law of life. In ov- ercoming death, man’s most feared enemy, he proved the continuity of consciousness,—the eternity of life. Christ Jesus It 1s generally accepted by all Christians that Christianity relates essentially to the system taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus and it is also believed that Jesus’ plan: of salvation reveals the true way; in the healing of disease, raising the dead, and in all the works of his ministry, he was bearing witness to the truth in accordance with the law of God. Christianity is not the creed of any sect; it is the demand of God to be Chrigtlike and to prove faith by works. The Christians of the world believed in Jesus as a teacher and spiritual leader instead of = healer, but it was wholly by bis works that he proved his divinity. Connor, on behalf of the Russell-Connor Corporation, against Ernest H. Russell, came to a sudden termination in the Superior Court before Judge Valentine. Russell was compelled to sit and listen to the judgment of the court pronounced against him, granting all of the relief prayed, for by the Plaintiff. Page 12 of the Plaintiff's complaint reads as follows: That on account of the manner of the organization of said Corporation and the division of said Capital Stock, and on account of certain ill-feeling and decensions that have developed and arisen among the said Connors and among the said Russells as such exclusive Stock Holdrs, it is physically impossible for said Corporation to hold a Director's meeting or a Stock Holders' meeting, for the reason that no quorum could be had for a Director's meeting and no majority of the stock could be presented at a Stock Holders' meeting. Page 14 of the Complaint reads as follows: That the said Ernest H. Russell is now denying the existence of the said Corporation and has been, constantly since the 18th day of December, 1918, interfering with the business and operation of said Corporation, and has refused to account for moneys belonging to said Corporation, which came into his possession since October 25, 1918, amounting to approximately One Thousand Dollars ($1000.00); that he is secreting, concealing and embezzling the property (personal) of said Corporation; that said Ernest H. Russell has and still is trying to substitute himself, personally, for and in the place and stead of said Corporation, in its residence and principal place of business, by publication of such substitution in at least one newspaper and the distribution of such cards and other printed matter, in substance and to the effect that it business being done in the Corporation's premises was and is the business of Ernest H. Russell, in which the Corporation and Stock Holders were and are not interested. That the plaintiffs have exhausted all of their remedies secured to them in the by-laws of said Corporation; that the Plaintiffs are legally advised that they have no remedy at law at all, by which the De Facto Director, Ernest H. Russell, can be ousted from the position he now holds as President and Manager of said Corporation, to the irreparable injury and damage to the business of said Corporation; that therefore the Plaintiffs are compelled to seek the equitable interposition of the Court in order to have the wrongs and grievances herein complained of, settled and adjusted. That said Defendant, Ernest H. Russell is insolvent, and, as the Plaintiffs are informed and believe, a judgment against him will be unavailing and worthless if he is suffered to secrete, conceal, and embezzle, sell or dispose of said personal property. In deciding the case against Russell the Court specifically decided among other ponits that Russell should be restrained from doing any or all of the following acts: From conducting or attempting to conduct undertaking business in the Corporation's premises, 1700 East 17th St.; from collecting, receiving, or otherwise handling any of the personal property of the Corporation including the money receipts and income, due from or as a result of the business operations of said Corporation; from moving or conveying any of the personal property from said Corporation's premises from handling possession of the Corporation's property which he wroughtly and unlawfully took and carried away from said Corporation's premises; from going in, on, or upon, in any way trespassing upon the premises of the Russell & Connor Corporation at 1400 E. 17th St. Sid. Court also decided as follows: That Ernest H. Russell is not a stockholder in the Russell & Connor Corporation; that Russell's chair as Director he declared vacant; that Russell on th 18th day of December 1918, became disqualified from holding office in the Russell & Connor Corporation; that Receiver George W. Pleerson, is appointed referee to hear the account of Russell for money in his possession estimated at $1000.00; that Russell pay all cost incurred in the suit; that the Defendant, Ernest H. Russell, and all of agents, attorneys, servants, and solicitors, he and each of them are, perpetually enjoined. Charles S. Darden represented the Plaintiff, and Paul M. Nash, the De- fendant. R. C. Plenty, the only Afro-American in San Diego having the will power and the determination to reconstruct that which all other race men have failed to achieve has united the Afro-American citizen, with the government in science and art. Let every loyal and brilliant negro play his part in helping to destroy anarchism in the Afro-American and play a greater part by recruiting into this Military Reserve. This organization has eliminated many, many of our villians, and gave many of our heroes an opportunity to proceed forward in the ranks of the Army and Navy. There never was, there is not, and there never will be any camouflage in the Treasury of which every dollar that was donated was used for the uniforms, and the future donations will be used to complete the Reserve with the necessity of Militarism. Rehearsing and drilling will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Masonic Hall, 8:00 p. m. A special request by Capt. Plenty is for each member to be present at these meetings. Scriptures, a vision of the eternal Christ coming, as of old, beacuse of the world's great need. Christian Scientists believe that the revelation of truth has appeared today in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. What will be the place in human history of this book that has again revealed God to man and that has given such liberation to humanity, such certainty of deliverance? Can its revelation be anything less than the revelation of the same healing Christ, Truth, of the ages? In asserting that Christian Science heals today as it did long ago we have only to offer the teaching of Jesus, the proofs of his ministry, and the fruits of our work. This practical operation of Christianity will always be the witness of Christ. Christian Scientists do not claim that the full scope and measure of healing has been accomplished today; they are constantly striving for the mind of Christ; that they may do better work today than yesterday. Progress is the eternal unfoldment of Truth in individual consciousness, and the growth of a student of Christian Science is the proof of his faith. Prayer Prayer is supposed to have a place in the daily life of every consistent Christian, and is generally believed to be the means by which man communicates with God; Jesus attached so much importance to the right concept of prayer that he gave that greatest of all prayers, beginning, "Our Father," which art in Heaven." Nowhere did Jesus, teaching as he did that he was not God, instruct his followers to pray to him; neither did he instruct them to appeal to any other personality, but without intercession, to approach God with loving confidence. How many good Christians have absolute confidence that prayer is always answered? The crying need of the world is to know how to pray aright, to pray the righteous prayer which availoth much. Science and Health contains a chapter on prayer which is accepted by Christian Scientists and acknowledged by many other advanced thinkers to be the greatest treatise on prayer over writte. In this chapter Mrs. Eddy says, "desire is prayer," then she clearly sets forth what the right desire and purpose of prayer must be; her exposition is in exact accord with the teachings of Jesus. Christian Science teaches that by constantly thinking the truth, we fulfill Jesus' command to pray constantly. The truth, the spiritual fact about all things, exists, and the knowing of this is the Mortal mind, the supposed opposite of God or Spirit, always presents an inverted sense of things: it believes only in itself and comprehends all things from its own standpoint and after its own likeness. If its claims and beliefs are the inversion of truth, then the very opposite of what material sense claims is true, to gain the experience of answered prayer we must hold thought to the spiritual reality of things. Jesus instructing his disciples in prayer said, "What things soover ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Much of the prayer of the world has been uttered for material things or for the fulfilment of human desires and it is never answered. Jesus denounced such prayer, but the moment we know that God has given all good to man and that all good now and eternally is, that moment we begin to receive the benefits of prayer and experience its blessings. That moment may be the present moment—"Now is the day of salvation," cried Paul to a people who were looking to a future salvation, and Christian Science declares that today is the day of salvation to those who demonstrate the same Christ. Truth Mankind has emerged but slowly out of paganism because it has not known how to pray intelligently. It has prayed to every kind of graven image, and to humanized sense of Deity which, after all, is only its own graven image. Christian Science treatment is prayer, but it does not create nor change anything but false beliefs, neither does it operate because of any mental argument, but because it declares and demonstrates the spiritual facts of being; true prayer is deliverance from evil beliefs. Christian Scientists accept the teaching of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and believe that the golden thread of truth running throughout unites all ages as the Christ is revealed. Science and Health has given an illumination to the Scriptures that enables the student to comprehend their spiritual import. If the Bible is God's word to his people, then it is for us today to know and to understand it. No longer do Christian Scientists read the Scriptures in a perfunctory manner, but it is their delight to read and study them daily. "The last fifty years have witnessed an intensity, and breadth of interest in Bible study unprecedented in the history of the Christian church," is the testimony of no less authority than the Rev. C. I. Scofield, D. D., editor of the Scofield Reference Bible. The first tenet of The Christian Science Church reads, "We take the inspired word of the Bible for our sufficient guide to eternal Life;" Christian Science teaches unreservedly, as necessary for sound doctrine what are considered the essentials of religion; it teaches that there is one infinite, omnipresent God, the creator of all. It teaches the divine sonship in the everpresent Christ; the Holy Ghost, or Comforter in the unolding of consciousness of fatherhood and sonship; the atonement or man's at-one-ment with God through Christ as demonstrated by Jesus when he proved that life is eternal; the baptism of Spirit, which cleanses from the impurities of the carnal or fleshly mind; and the resurrection through progress and growth in Truth into the complete satisfaction and perfection of God and his likeness. The Bible as a book of human history would be of no more value today than any other ancient history were it not for that goldenthread of Truth which has preserved it throughout all time and has made it sacred to all Christian people. The Christian warfare, the strife in individual consciousness, is ever the same in the overcoming of evil with Truth, therefore, the experiences of the people of God, of every prophet and apostle, depict the conflict between good and evil experienced by every mortal. Religious history presents different conditions of thought; the story of Job's life is illustrative of the life of every man born into the flesh. Mortal man, like Job, has looked in vain for a contented state of mind. Searching for satisfaction he has plunged into every pleasure only to find disappointment. Business and the accumulation of money have been the resort of many to gain content and peace of mind, but the goal has ever been a Will-of-the-Wisp just ahead but never within grasp. Men have been prone to believe that there is no religious teaching that is satisfactory or dependable, and at last arrive at that place in their experience where they exclaim; "All is vanity and vexation of spirit" (Ecclesiastes 1:14). At this time they may be ready for Christian Science and when they understand it they can then declare, as did Job, "I know that My Redeemer liveth." Mortal mind has within itself no saving grace. It suggests its own sense of happiness and pleasure; if man chooses to look to matter for satisfaction, he must accept all the suffering that accompanies this belief. Jesus' statement, "The flesh profeteth nothing," is identical with the statement of Science and Health in what is known as the Scientific Statement of Being, that "All is Infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation." Christian Scientists have found that the teaching of their text-book does not vary one hatrabreadth from the teaching of the Bible. The Discoverer and Founder Little more than fifty years ago there was just one Christian Scientist on earth, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. She says, in "Retrospection and Introspection," that from her very childhood she was impelled by a hunger and thirst after divine things, a desire for something better than matter and apart from it. This spiritual desire made her always consecrated in thought and purpose to the endeavor to know and understand God. and natural order of evi "Science and Health wi Scriptures" was given. This experience is most sively set forth in her speeches and Introspect biographical account of She writes, "My immee from the effects of an by an accident, an injury medicine nor surgery was the falling apple to the discovery how to be and how to make other Mrs. Eddy came of devotedly religious parents, and became a member of the Gongregational Church when a very young girl, even though her confession of faith was not in accord with the strict and relentless theology of that day. She had discerned God as Love, and through this discernment lost her fear of the old Calvinistic decree* of predestination. With maturing years came the conviction of the unreliable nature of all things material, and at last, she was left to die as the result of an injury supposed to be fatal. She then called for her Bible, and while reading of the cures wrought by Jesus realized that God was as able to heal then as in centuries past, and she immediately arose from her bed restored to health. Centuries of time had not annuled God's promises, and with her healing came determination to know the science or truth of that which had wrought such a change in her life. She devoted years to the research; and at last, in the divine Catering to the UNITED LO AND JE Loans money on DIAMONDS; WAT KODAKS; PISTO RIFLES, CLOTHING THING OF VALU MONEY TO LOAN O WE BUY LI Open from 7 a. m. to 11 p. m. 517 South Main Street Phone Sacramento Branche CHICAGO ICE CR Catering to the Colored Trade UNITED LOAN AND JEWELRY is money on DIAMONDS; WATCHES, JEWELRY KODAKS; PISTOLS, SHOTGUN RIFLES, CLOTHING, FURS OR AN THING OF VALUE. Spir- call the reality; and matter, the eality." not one statement of Science and health is presented as hypothesis or theory of human opinion, but even statement issues from the standpoint of demonstration and proof. From Plato, the pagan philosopher, to more advanced thought of Emeritus is a far cry, but only here and there is there a glint of light. No man philosophy or theory has ever lived the problem of life demonically, as no human theory can solve the belief of evil and matter, from which belief issues all sin, disease, death; only the teachings of Jesus the master metaphysician, made our today through Science and health, are equal to so great a denud. Mrs. Eddy says of Jesus that "was the most scientific man that trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things found the spiritual cause." Because Mrs. Eddy "plunged beneath material surface," she has revealed to this age the same availablerist, Truth, which heals and saves. Proved a most consecrated follower of Christ Jesus and claimed something more for herself. Through all time, here and there, men and men uplifted thought have been able to heal through faith, but they did not knowledge of divine law or the process by which healing might accomplish for all. Their experiences were fragmentary and not result of a knowledge of Principia. It is no miracle to accomplish rulers when one is shown the way through a scientific rule and its application, but the great miracle was that in a world of abject materism, a woman appeared, who, though steadfast faith in God, and desire to know his will in order to mankind, was able to peer back through the centuries of error, ignorance, and darkness and perceive in the Christ idea. This was theracle, and yet it was the inevitable notion of Truth. In Science and health, Mrs. Eddy has set forth a scientific system with definite rules of practice, which will enable any core seeker to prove the truth of revelation. In the early years of ministry, with sublime patience and courage, she waited, worked, and layed, until she gained a handful of students to assist her in raising the standard of Christian Science on earth. Today Christian Science isown throughout the whole world; many villages and remote places are a Society or Church organization and most of the larger cities are many overflowing churches. Mrs. Eddy also established The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel, monthly and weekly publications invaluable to students of Christian Science. Later she handed the great international daily called "The Christian Science Monitor," a newspaper circulated and throughout the world and generally acknowledged as entirely reable in its statements. She also handed and directed many other activities in connection with the Church, which were designed to be, and always will be of great benefit humanity. Is not this a great accomplishment for one lone woman? Humanity has slowly outgrown itscient beliefs and its many falseis, while history shows that woman is but slowly arisen from a state ofactivity and bondage. It is this ancient belief that has been the basis of my opposition there has been to Mrs. Eddy's leadership. She has ever been a great friend of woman and through her teachings many of us have been given strength and courage to meet the problems of life successfully. She has revealed the way of liberation for woman in the way of salvation for all mankind. Christian science has made better men and women and it has elevated womanhood it has purified manhood by giving nobler citizenship to the world. It would be strange indeed if Christian Scientists did not love and were Mrs. Eddy for her unselfishotion and for hte blessings that of individually feel have been their intention as the result of her consecrat- life work. She never encouraged a slightest personal adulation but ways turned her followers to the praise of God, away from person- to Principle. Knowledge of God is true education and only as the spiritual sense is gained through the study of the letter, can the truth be demonstrated; to have merely an intellectual sense of Christian Science without the spiritual perception of its teaching, is to lose its real import and be barren of fruits. "The letter and the spirit must both bear witness and then signs follow." The world travelling in anguish and sorrow has great need of the Comforter today, but the great convulsing problems can only be settled ultimately through the understanding of Principle. Millions of men have been taken from happy homes, from useful occupations, and from honorable citizenship to fight the battle of Principle against the lawless warfare of autocracy. They went forth with the vision of the vision of democracy before them, and this ideal has won the victory over evil. Christian Scientists know that an enduring peace can come through the victory of Truth over error only. They regret the fact that the world was not ready for progress without war, but they knew that to pacify or to compromise with error does not bring peace. As we looked out upon the world's conflict and beheld the phenomena of destructive evil, we were not dismayed nor discouraged. We knew that the battle of Principle was being fought, that Divine Mind governs the universe and that the earth is to be transformed. The progress of individuals as well as that of nations, is according to their concept of Deity, and the universal understanding of God will end all strife and warfare. There is deep speculation as to whether or not Uncle Sam will give Negroes commissions in the regular army when the same is reorganized. After the valiant service rendered by the Black Americans in the greatest struggle of all ages, surely there could not be a more fitting tribute of appreciation from this Government than to bestow upon the eligible of our race men the coveted honors. Not only will it prove to us as a race that we have been, in a way, repaid for our troops' noble service, but it will encourage the race boys, who will be the race men of tomorrow, to fight for higher education, and stimulate the desire to make worth while of the advantages offered them for a higher type of manhood. Another way to help flap the wings of Democracy among the American Negro, is to give us a ship or two. We have Negro Regiments in the army, and why not a Negro Ship in the Navy? What would be more pleasing to us as a race than cadets at Annapolis, to pripare for officers on the ships that would be allotted to us? What more inspiring to the race womanhood to prepare to become the wives of such men? We do not ask for social equality. Far from it. We are too happy among ourselves, and furthermore we are striving for higher ideals as a unit, and how could we attain such if we were of a motley assortment? That is why we are clamorous for a ship or two. They would speed us up a hundred years, and land us in the front rank of Democracy, which is no more than any other people would desire, and not a fraction of the demands of the other oppressed nations of the world. Prejudice has manifested itself in the last two administrations of the White House, largely due to Southern influence. Let us hope that the same will not be distributed around the Peace Table, as America is conducting a large part of the service. White southern sentiment seems stirred to the uttermost by the expressions of the negro press throughout the country. That the pen is mightier than the sword is plainly demonstrated in these racial outbursts. It takes a diamond to cut a diamond, and the white man is realizing that the black man is making use of his education. What the Negro of fifty years ago had to tolerate, the Negro is gradually overcoming these feelings of temerity, and does not hesitate to make his demands, and force his issues. He is bound to be recognized. NEWHOME "I'll get it for my wife" NO OTHER LIKE IT. NO OTHER AS GOOD. Purchase the "NEW HOME" and you will have a life asset at the price you pay. A union memorial service will be held at First A. M. E. Church on Sunday. February 9th, at 3:00 o'clock for the late Col. Roosevelt. Prof. J. C. Moore will deliver the principal address, and all the pastors of the different colored churches will take past, and members from all the Choirs will unite and sing for the occasion. This is a step in the right direction, and the Rev. Wm. Prince who has the arrangements in charge, made a wise selection in the person of Prof. J. C. Moore for the principal address as Prof. Moore is a man of high intellectual attainments, a splendid speaker, and of wide experience, and it is hoped that the people will turn out in large numbers to honor the memory of one of the Nation's greatest man, whose motto was, "A square deal, all men up and nobody down." Quite a number of progressive men and women of Pasadena are preparing to organize a Forum, at which live and pertinent questions concerning the race in Pasadena can be discussed and our people be enlightened on the important issues that concern them. There is a crying need of such an organization in this city where the best thinking men and women who keep an eye on the trend of events can be brought before the masses and educate them in an intelligent and convincing way. There is much need of the fast growing Negro population of Pasadena to come together and agitate the things necessary for their betterment, and circulate propaganda for the guidance of the race in this the greatest crisis of the Nation's progress and reconstruction. Notices will be out soon for the call to get together, watch for them. Services in all the churches were well attended on last Sunday, being the First Sunday of the month, and all restrictions removed by the Health Department caused many Church going people to turn out and enjoy the worship from which they have been so long kept away. The services at the Friendship Baptist Church were very impressing all day. Beginning with the Sunday School at 9:45 a. m. the attendance was very satisfactory and all seemed glad to be there. The Lesson subject, "The giving of the Manna" proved very interesting and helpful, while the review by the pastor was extremely instructive. At 11:00 o'Clock the pastor brought a wonderful message to his eager congregation who were out in large numbers, everyone went away tilled with the wonderful things that had been told them out of God's word. At 3:00 o'Clock p. m. the W. H. and F. M. Society held their regular monthly session, and after the routine business was disposed of by the Thirthieth Security Trust an William H. Shores, (Daddy Sho THE SECURITY TRUST 5th and Spr The big-Security Bank at 5th and Spring Street will have a Birthday on next Tuesday, February 11th, marking 30 years since they opened up to do a banking business in this city, with the present President, J. F. Sarton as the Secretary and Teller, and Dandy Shawman the 10b. President, Mrs. J. A. Fleming, Mrs. R. A. Dent conducted a soul-stirring song service which prepared the hearts of the large number of missionary women including many visitors from the other churches for the reception of the message of the day from Sister I. H. Ford, who has just returned from a very successful week's stay in Needles Cal., where she conducted a campaign for souls. She delivered a wonderful message with which all were well pleased, and Sister Ford showed that her short visit to Needles not only was beneficial to the little church and people there, but was very much beneficial to her. It gave her more poise, self-confidence and an easy delivery that was not noticeable in her former attempt in same pulpit. We are surely proud of Sister Ford. The B. Y. P. U. under the efficient leadership of the president, Mrs. E. O. Solomon started off again with full impetus, and the casual observer would never suspect that they had been interrupted by any Flu ban or anything else. The attendance was very satisfactory, and the program was very good. The evening service was in the form of the regular monthly Praise Meeting with Deacon Wilson, and Bro. Wm. Lawson as leaders, and the surprisingly large congregations witnessed a spiritual overflow. The Lord's Supper was administered and the people sang a hymn and departed for their several homes well pleased with the bountiful blessings of the day. On next Sunday, the Rev. Dr. Wm. R. Carter, one of the late resident ministers to Los Angeles, coming directly from Topeka Kansas, where for the past number of years he was Principal of the Topeka Industrial Institute. He will preach both morning and evening. Everyone should avail themselves of the opportunity to hear this educator and minister. Other services as usual, all are welcome. The Young Women's Missionary Auxiliary of the Friendship Baptist Church held their regular meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Troy. 320 N. Orange Grove Ave., and in addition to the very enjoyable social hour and bounteous hospitality of the host and hostess, plans were laid for many activities in the near future. The Brotherhood of the Friendship Baptist Church also held a long delayed meeting in the Sunday School room on Thursday evening, and planned for a very energetic campaign for the winter season in keeping in touch with the strangers and visitors in the city, and making them welcome to the city and to the church. The let courtesy be shown to all who enter our place of business. I say our place of business because each employee should have enough interest in the welfare of the bank to feel himself a part of the business. The one who has no more interest than to get his pay check cashed is not worth much in a bank of this kind. This bank is on top of all its rivals in this city, and many others as well. It is a big thing to be on top. The next thing is to stay there. "How to keep it there." It is very essential that each employee give the best that is in him, in work, kindness, cheerfulness and smiles. This goes a long way in keeping on top. Keep sunshine in your face. It is catching. It will reflect to others. This combination with courtesy at the head is as a General leading an army on to victory. Let these be practised each day by all. It is like everything else that has climbed to the heights of greatness until they have reached the topmost round. There are always some who would be glad to see it at the bottom. For no other reason than that it is "On the Top." There are many ways to act a crab. There are many things that come under the observation of the employee that are turned down with a short answer, or with a look that sends the would-be customer and sometimes a customer away with the idea that this big Bank does not need their business. Whereas if the same question had been asked of an Officer of the Bank he would have been glad to explain, thereby creating a good feeling towards the one seeking information. Each employee should be just, as willing to explain matters pertaining to the Bnak's business before or after banking hours as during banking hours if the opportunity presents it-
