GOOD WILL The Smith Mercantile Co., at 5259 Central have entered "Good Will" in the race. MILK SHAKE Trained on a diet of rich thick Milk Shakes and good food such as Eugine Johnson Drug Store puts out at their store 1483 West Jefferson. "Milk Shake" the entry of this concern is in the best of running condition. Pay a visit to Eugine Johnson's Drug Store and see why "Milk Shake" wins the race. PARASITE The first thought of Dr. Alexander Moxley, who has a famous Dog and Cat Hospital at 1400 East Washington Blvd. in training this desert hound for the forthcoming race was to properly isolate him from other parasites such as fleas, lice, and other vermin which he so strikingly resembles, and place him in his proper classification along with the other world-famous speed-burners of the animal kingdom such as Man'O War, Dan Patch, the hounds at Auga Caliente, and the whippets at Alhambra. This toad, Parasite, has been conditioned to the veritable "pink," and has been daily exercised in competition with the fastest animals in Dr. Moxley's Hospital. You can lay the family jewels on this entry without a qualm or a quiver. Parasite is going to be hard to beat. RE-BAUM Baumann & Rene Drug Store at 1301 Central know their entry in the desert classic is free from colds or feavers and in the best of condition for in addition to the diet of good food that it has been getting, Dr. Baumann has been training it on Re-Baum Cough Syrup. Bartlett who has been given the most unique spot in novelty history personally has trained his Sagebrush Racers and has conducted similar races in the largest cities of Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona and California. Ar. Bartlett has been in Motion Pictures with his novelty racers and done vaudeville engagements. "Horned Toad Racing", said the Horned Toad King, "is nothing new it was practiced by the Indians for many, many years and large amounts have been won and lost on the winning toad. These races were held in the "Kavas, or Indian Lodges of different tribes and were most as popular as horse racing." Mr. Bartlett, himself is part. Bowie American Legio Post 228, Expresses Gratitude To Merchants For Co-Operation The entries for the most part in this horned toad race have been made by merchants and business concerns who are friends and wish to show a spirit of co-operation with the American Legion boys in this community. CARPENTIER TO ACT AS MASTER OF CEREMONIES Having had a great deal of experience, Comrade Carpentier of the Benj. J. Bowie Post No. 228, has been appointed Master of Ceremonies, and will be responsible to see that every sponsor of an entry has the best of advertising and chance to get in the money. Since the announcement by the Benj J. Since the announcement by the Benj J. Bowle Post 228 of the American Legion that there was to be a Horned Toad Race and that there was a purse of $100.00 cash to the winner's interest in the Newest of Western Classics has been growing. Many ideas have been advanced and different methods tried by various individuals and trainers who would like o have their desert galloper bring home the dough. However the plan which seems to be most generally in use is that adopted by Frank Henry who is training the entry of the Entertainers' Safe, 1172 E. 12th. Henry has named his horned pony "Kid Tucker" and is doing the training himself. The Workouts are supposed to be in secret and the method different. However one of the comrades slipped out to where the work was being done and took along their stop watches. Here is what they say: First that a walled practice track was built wide enough to permit the passage of the entry. Then the steed was blindfolded to prevent him from seeing the walls. He was placed at the post and the trainer gently but persistently pushed a red hot coal along behind. Speed was thus greatly increased. Mr. Henry said when approached on the subject, "You see the walled course will teach the toad to discard wasted motion and the scarlet coal promotes speed. Of course we never get close enough to the reptiles rider to burn it, for that would be cruelty. The idea is more to supply added heat to the already burning sands that this reptile is accustomed to. Every one knows the force inducing speed of these desert racers in the intense desire to run away from the corching sands of the desert. Imagination will supplant the fire pill on the night o the dace then my entry will flash by in a burst of speed and fancy footwork leaving all the other entries at the post, not only breaking the world's record time of two minutes and five seconds but bringing bringing me home the hundred bucks." "T BONE" McFarland's Market, 43rd and Central has gutted "T BOND" in the great race and as he is a good STEAK pony he will sure shake a wicked hip, "T BOND" can be seen any day at either one or the other of McFarland Market, 43rd and Central or at 43rd street going thru his daily peeps with his stable mates "SERLOIN" and "ROUND STEAK" "Lung Tonic" entered by Bruce's Drug Store Vernon and Central just arrived yesterday from Arizona. The arrival at the Southern Pacific depot caused quite a commotion because of the crowd at the station. WATCH HIM BOYS, WATCH HIM! LINGERE Cliff's Fashion Salon at 4013 Central avenue has entered "Lingerie" who is expensive in appearance but not in price. Trainer Louie Cole is giving him the best care stretchin' him out in the window every day and covering him up with moderate priced dresses and beautiful fur coats to keep him warm at night. "Lingerie" as you know is a kin to hosery so it is only natural to find that he has slipped into a box of inexpensive but beautiful hosery now and then for an afternoon siesta. ZERG Zerg, a beautiful well lined title contender is the entry of Zerg Furniture Co., at 4211 Central who's training quarters are beautifully lighted with all styles of modern and futuristic lamps. He can be seen while resting after his daily work out encouched on a handsom davenport listening to a Philco table model Radio. SAGE SAUSAGE SAGE SAUSAGE, the entry of Dennis Thorp's Market at 4321 Central is a native of the Sage country. Since establishing his training headquarters at the Dennis Thorp General Market the trainer has had to order a double shipment of Sage part for the wonderful sage Sausage and part for the title contender. Sage Sausage. GYNECOLOGY Many women, unfortunately, that yearn for motherhood, can for various reasons, mostly some abnormal condition, have no children. They deserve sympathy; but most of all the aid of a competent physician. There are some women that deliberately prefer pet dogs to children, not many, thank heaven. But what a difference between the old age of a woman who has for comfort only the recollection of many dogs dead and buried, and that of a woman whose children testify to the value of her life. Gynecology, the Toad who will win this race, being one of these unfortunate victims, made her way with a boat of friends to the offices of our own Dr. S. S. Turner who specializes in the diseases of women and located at 1200 East Vernon avenue after having had a careful examination and proper treatments went on her way rejoicing and is now a proud mother "SALARY GUARDIAN" Golden State Insurance Company at 4111 Central avenue, have entered a Desert Romper that is guaranteed to win. Either win, lose, draw, if you watch "Salary Guardian" you will win. This little contender is training in the rear of the Golden State Insurance Company's office, and Superintendent L. A. Beavers, who is acting as trainer, is seeing to it that this entry of the Accident and Health Department is getting the best of scientific training "SANTA BE CHIER-NO. 16" SANTA JE CHILE NO. 19 The Santa Fe Red Caps have entered their pet racer Santa Fe Chief, No. 19, and claim that this entry is the fastest thing on the desert. This entry was delayed according to Mr. Adams for fear that if the other entrant knew the Bandit Taker was in the race their chances would be hopeless. At present he is feeding him only 1-4 grain but on the night of the race will see that it consumes a whole box. PRYCE'S PHARMACY Pryce's Pharmacy at 1801 Central has entered a desert galloper that they have named after their drug store. Pryce's Pharmacy always wins and their friends should put their money on this entry. UNEXCELLED SERVICE Unexcelled Service the entry of W. J. Benton, Druggist, 48th and Central is an Unexcelled entry in many respects. In representing the Benton Drug Store it is carrying the colors of a house of Unexcelled Service. W. J. Benton is training this desert romper and promises to have it in the pink of condition for the race of the century. SERVICE Modern Pharmacy 3200 Central avenue has entered a very much sought after racer by the name of "Service." The Modern Pharmacy specializes in Service and consequently in training this entry is in a position to give it the best of the breaks and long experience of the establishment. BEAUTY Madam Madline Tournor Beauty Salon, 4809 Hollywood Blvd, who is a specialist in beauty culture, has entered "Beauty." The creams and lotions of this Beauty Salon are well known and with Beauty receiving a daily workout and groomed to perfection it is sure to be winner. Beauty will always win. HO-HAY Nash Pharmacy, 4826 Central has entered HO-HAY which promises to be the peepiest of the galloping reptiles that face the barrier Wednesday night. HO-HAY will pep any one or anything up and is a sure shot in the Desert Classia. RHEUMATIC REMEDY Wolin's Drug Store 4631 Central has entered "Rheumatic Remedy," a little desert racer that is free from any aching joints and is in the pink of condition. It has been suggested by Mr. N. Wolin that if any trainers of horned toads wish to have free and easy running entries drop in and get acquainted with "Rheumatic Remedy." HUDSON LUNDELL BLDG Backed to the finish by the Hudson Liddell Building this desert roper named after the Hudson-Liddell Bldg., is out to win. Few entries have the distinction of having won three races as this one. Consequently Hudson-Liddell is a sure shot. Look him over and play it across the board. As Dr. Hudson who is perfectly capable has cured all of the Pyorrhea of which he was afflicted with a bad case when arriving in Los Angeles, also physically run down after Dr. Liddell gave him one of those famous Liddell physical examinations and doctored him up a bit he is now a fully recovered Toad. So play him strong. pion in a winner. Speedy Harris, Spiney and Grandison are training this galloping reptile along side of its name sake daily. show its heels to most of the other entries. "Service" may not win the race but you can bet Service is always in the money. MARSDEN FOR DRUGS Co-operating at all times with activities beneficial to the community Marsden Drug Store 5401 Central have entered a racer in the Legion Classic and have called it "Marsden." This drug store is open all night and the desert galloper has had the advantage of twenty-four hour training. WESTERN HOME FURNITURE COMPANY 4311 CENTRAL have entered "Western Home" in the derby and believe me his training quarters is a regular palace. He is sleeping in a brand new bed and has a Majestic Radio for company. His food is kept fresh in a "North Pole" Frigidaire and cooked on a "Favorite" gas range. Just drop in at 4311 Central and his trainer, Mr. Kaplan will show you thru "Western Home" training palace. PIONEER "Pioneer," the entry of A. J. Roberts and Sons Funeral Parlors, 1415 Central avenue has been rightly named due to the fact that Roberts and Sons are one of the pioneer establishments of its kind in Los Angeles and just as "Pioneer" is a true native of the southwest and substantial as the desert sands this organization is not only a pioneer but substantial and can be reed upon. C. C. PILLS Dr. Frank A. Pearl, 2510 Central, a veteran of the World War has chosen C. C. Pills to represent him in the Legion Classic and Dr. Pearl says that C. C. Pills won the war he can see no reason why his entry whom he is training on C. C. Pills at his office should not win this race even though it is in peace time the action is the same. (Editor's Note)—Speculation if rife as to whether C. C. Pills will out run Casteroll. "APEX NITE CLUB Phone HU. 7777, the Apex Nite club at 4015 Central, and make a reservation to see their Desert Racer doing its training an dhe "Four Covans" are training it in the newest and latest styles. "Apex Nite Club" is the entry's name, and just as the club is offering a winner in entertainment, this temperamental racer from the desert is booked as a sure shot. "DISEASE" "Disease" Dr. A. A. Foster of 2510 Central and Dr. G. G. Hatcher, 4406 Central, have combined interests and are backing a speedy denizen of the desert and have named it "Disease." Dr. Foster is attending it and seeing that its running gears are all in first-class condition while Dr. Hatcher is daily giving its teeth the once over so that it can be sure to run free from a tooth ache. These Doctors say they are going to fix this entry up so it will be the best toad in toadland. BOWIE AMERICAN LEGION POST 228 EXPRESSSES GRATITUDE TO MERCHANTS FOR CO-OPERATION an unusual amount of advertising not only in the papers but over the air and in special feature advertising that all who are sponsoring entries have expressed their gratitude at the chance of securing such good and direct advertising for such a small cost. Bowie Post 228 wish to express their thanks to all who have co-operated with them in this unique and novel classic. Enthusiasm in the various camps was high as the result of secret workouts was compared with reports from other quarters. Late entries in the event have provided unexpected talent which may upset the dope as to which of the desert denizens will take the honors. Interest in the event indicated that one of the largest crowds of sport loving fans ever to gather would be on hand to witness this unique speed classic and enjoy a nevening of Dancing to the harmonious strains of Hot Music by BUSTER WILSON'S MUSIC MASTERS. This by no less an authority than a college scientist who left his college that year to enter his chosen toad in the horned Toad Derby at Tuscon, Arizona.
