GREAT WORK IN FA AND HOME Grand Chancellor Wills Ro Ten years ago extension work was started among Negroes of Texas with three men, R. L. Walker, E. V. Hunter, and H. E. V. Hunter. We have 88 workers in 26 counties in Texas. We have 28 men agents, two of them Negroes, and 64 women agents, 14 home demonstration agents with one general supervisor. In the state of Texas we have 57 counties with sufficient Negro population support in Texas. Several of these counties have qualified as to local funds and we are looking for a new county. The fiscal year, which is in July, for federal support for these counties. Ten years are not too much impatient for the qualification of workers among Negroes as is now the case Both Negroes are from the state and the need of well trained men and women to do this work. Our local farm agents are from the county and the country and home demonstration agents are women specially trained in Negro farmers and their wives are reaping the benefit of this service from these trained men. It would be difficult to enumerate the many things done for the purpose of demonstration and service among the many things demonstrated and sserved by the agents however, are dairying, crop farming, drain and home management. The good done along these particular lines can be appreciated fully since the farm is a location to compare the present condition of farms and farm houses with conditions before extension service was done. The condition of counties with agents with that of counties where there are no agents. Among the things demonstrated and sserved by the local farm agents are terracing and ditching, improvement of soil by fertilization, irrigation, rotation, diversification of crops, better-dairy stock hog, farm animals, poultry and etc. The value of terracing and ditching may be seen by the increase in value of the farms where it has been done, because the farm or ditched was con considered valueless has been so improved that the owners have been able to secure Federal Bank aid which before could not have been obtained. The use of fertilizer both commercial and barnyard compost is enabling the farmer to increase many times the yield of their acreage. Haphazard methods of cultivation is entirely discouraged by the agents, and farmers are seeing the fruits of careful cultivation. Root rot is being eliminated by rotation. Diversification is greatly stressed. The good of planting more food and feed, the planting of crops heretofore, not considered by the average Negro farmer is now being done, and these farmers are respiring more benefit from their toll by growing products that can be used by the folks and animals of the farm as well as the marketed. Instead of year after year growing more cotton and corn, and paying little attention to the grade of that. Farmers are learning the importance of seed selection. No longer is just any seeds they happen to come across planted with the aid. The agent is careful to study is made ofへんにいい，so the general conditions, and needs for whatever crop to be planted are selected to suit these conditions. The result of the departure from the old way is gratifying to say the least. The steady increase of better livestock and poultry in counties across the country is plainly apparent. Scrub stock is being slowly but surely too much cannot be said of the work that is being done by the home demonstration agents. Farm equipment is being learned improved methods of home management. For a very long time, the equipment preserved and canned some fruit, because it was not such a difficult task. Their close contact with the people has enabled us to gain much publicity and interest we otherwise would not have been able to receive. Authorities at college Station have given every aid to make the work a success. The Department of Agriculture has sent out bulletins covering every phase of farm life and these bulletins have helped to solve the many problems confronting every farmer. Because of the too full programs of the many grand lodges and the space to tell the legislation, which consist mainly of farce, just what extension work was and what extension program it was, the farmer of Texas. It was Hon. W. S. Willis Grand Chancellor of the grand lodges, and the program so as to allow space for this. This meant much to the service as others soon followed his example. The grand lodges are told just what extension service can mean to them. Their interest and desire for extension services are the service among our people, and the ultimate improvement of the service among our people. The frequent pride in the possession of good farms will mean, naturally, a decrease in the exodus of the grand lodges. We wish to specially thank Hon. W. S. Why should it not happen that it was not done? Pay Your Community Chest Pledge It has often been said by the critics of the Negro that he as a race was not to be relied upon to meet the obligations that he made and to fulfill the promises that he gave. It is a severe criticism and that has done more probably than believing in us who otherwise would at times lend a helping hand to our projects. And it is and but true that all too often we, by our actions do much to make our projects a less if not coarse fall in our promises. It is rather, we think, that we make these promises and then as easily for our purposes sort of strain in us that allows for our taking of things that others consider of the greatest importance with more case than In the dispatches to the effect that the Negroes of St. Louis had pledged $125,838 for the expansion of their Y. M. C. A. facilities there should come a large degree of shame to those of us who live in Dallas and enjoy its benefits. The present Y. M. C. A. of St. Louis, while probably not large enough to accommodate the demands upon it is by no means a thing to be looked down upon. In fact for many years and probably now it is the largest of its kind outside of New York. But it is not large enough and the Negro citizens who reap the direct benefit of it have decided to enlarge it and have gone about it in the only way to guarantee that it will be done. The reputation of the race is built upon the experience of the people of the things trampled with them by us. If we fail in the things in the race, we can be no reason for the belief on the part of others that we are in any way dependable. And those who have pledged and so far fallen down on their promises will redemone themselves and save the race by their prompt attention to this matter. It is more than a person consideration. It involves a lot of work. It is then, no more than the twenty or so leaders of the community. Cheat Fund complain over the fact that more than 7,000 of the pledges in the Community of Drive have now been taken to the fund last past time. They should complain. There is no reason to believe a large population has outstripped us and Houston is well on its way to the successful promotion of such an institution. There has been even though circumstances made their payment impossible. There is wealth in Dallas among its Negro citizen to as great an extent as there is in any city of its size probably. But there does not seem to be as great a love of real accomplishment among them as there is in some other cities even other race with us in the matter. of the things transmitted with them. The business men can be no reason for the belief on the part of others that we are not competent to form any sort of efficiently working body. The passions have such an association but its functioning is not what we are supposed to be. A. gave opportunity for our saying so and we have said it. And we dare any truthful person to successfully dispute our statement. This is not "calamity howling." It is just the plain truth. And the Express in the outset of these remarks realize that the charges of subsidization that are being brought against it and others can in no way be escaped in this instance. But since its duty to the people demands that it always speak in the effort to direct the charges in the proper way in the proper charges and only demands that they be proven in the defense of fairness. A WEST INDIAN-AMERICAN COALITION There seems to be a group of Pythian malcontents that is making its voice heard in many quarters of Texas and the burden of the song of that group is that the affairs of the Pythians are not being administered to their liking. One member of this group in speaking a few days ago made the statement that the main complaint was that the Grand Chancellor is not being trained to help them. It seems strange that even after so many years of poor institutions and failing institutions, we have not learned to value ability and the things that it can and does bring to pass for us. We are really like in many ways to the swimming hog who in fighting to make progress and probably to save his life from the water, cuts his own throat with the very organs that should carry him to safety. Such a statement of our willingness to tear down is probably more than being so often stated to the effect that we are much like a man who makes his own way out of the crab crawl. They always pull him down as often as he starts. There has never been in the whole history of fraternal orders in Texas a more prosperous condition maintained as in the Knights of Pythias during the past seven years. Its membership has more than doubled. Its finances have passed the half-million dollar mark and its members now are in position to reap the direct benefits of the large fund that they have accumulated during these years. Where is the harm done to the people? Is it directly traceable to the methods and plans of the Grand Chancellor, is he to be tormented because of that fact? His salary? There the rub comes. The same gentleman quoted above made the remark that "there is not a Negro in the world whose work is worth as much as the Grand Chancellor receives." When asked if he did not believe that a man was worth at least a part of the amount of money he received, he was able to hint to that concern, he had nothing to say. FOR THE WOMA It of course cannot be said that there are not other men in its ranks who could do much for it. But it can be said that the callibre of those who are making the greatest efforts in the search for the greatest words, when searched, do not reveal one single act or contribution to the well-being of themselves and their race. We. of course do not know them all. But those with whom we have come in contact do not have the markings of "howling men" who may perceive pride to anything constructive that we accomplish. It may be a relief to frown when one is basal, with troubles but the other is upright, with leaks that leave hides lines behind. Those who retain smooth velvety skints to an advanced age are invariably in a calm temperament. A calm temperament. A whisper hints to the women with a completion finished to lowness cream instead of dead white as this will minimizes the deep tone.
