They are not endowing to fool themselves or the voters of Colored America will rush up to the poles without an understated ticket. They are proceeding on the sensible and practical basis that Colored voters must be given good and fair treatment, why they should support the Republican party. This manner of dealing with the voters will, in the future, be the type of organization that Colored citizens desire and incidentally, that of the parties, including the Democrats and Progressives. More than in any previous campaign, the other parties are appealing to the Colored voter. The leaders of the Republican cause, from Matthias Schroeder to recognizing this fact and telling it to Chairman Butler, and all of the cards on the table is the sensible way of going after votes and saving the interests of the party. M. E. Church comes a statement in regard to the Negro ministry that explains to a great extent the failure of the Negro church as such to exert the influence for good in the life of the race that the conditions of living and progress in the race today demand. Says the statement: "The most neglected part of professional educational in America is that of the Negro ministry. Less than 100 well trained young Colored men graduated from the theological seminaries last year, and took degrees in theology. There are more than 60,000 Negro ministers in America. There are more than 50,000 Negro ministers from the Negro ministers parochy to 5,000,000 Colored people each week. They touch more Negroes than any other social or charitable institution in the country. They touch more than the public schools. MEMBER NATIONAL NEGRO PRESS ASSOCIATION. It is unfortunate that the number of ministers who are trained is exceedingly small as compared with the number that need training. The latest reports published in the Nerel Journal of Journalism Negroes were in theological seminaries in this country. Notice To The Public An easy reflection upon the characters standing or reputation of any person, or any person in the columns of THE DALLAS EXPRESS will be given to the attention of the public. Only 910 students are reported as registered in the 36 theological seminaries. If those studying in the northern seminaries are added the number will hardly reach 1,000. Only two institutions had over 100 students and only one other had as many as 50 students. The other had as low as five students, and from their numbers it is not to be presumed that their faculties and equipment are very inspiring, or that they will draw students of a highly intellectual sort. Of the 910 students only 283 or much less than one third are in the regular courses leading to a degree. When we consider that some of these schools give a degree to a student, we must also consider that theological seminaries parity work enough to enter a high school, you will see that the great mass of the theological students must be beow low the eighth grade in their preparation. If this is true of the students what have we to expect of those who do not take a theological course." Published every Saturday, Morning on the Year. BING Advertising the Great American Sport News dispatches state that at the world meeting of lawyers which closed recently in London, England, there was a series of placards containing statutes on the laws of England that it displayed on the backs of "sandwichmen" who paraded the streets of London in the vicinity of the meeting. The lawyers were held. It is to be remembered that this was the meeting at which an invitation to visit the court was extended and accepted. It is further reported that some unknown force was captured which caused the release of the prisoners from the case of the public, but not before so much interest was created in that still inaccessible force about American brides. THE CASE OF THE TEXAS NEGRO REPUBLICANS Though the medium of English "bandwishness" Londons learner-education sport. That it proved embarrassing to those Americans who hoped to be taught the sport was proven by the sigma. Pitilies publicity it will be called by the signer fight against teaching. Certainly it was not unfair for once it happened that the truth as advertised was true. And the most unfortunate thing about it was that those who were not interested have to have seen to it that they were different. LaFollette may appeal to some Tennant as the logical candidate in the supplication in our unfinished book that have been made up because they seem to see in his support another reason that they have lost by their years of shame that they should have Why not stay in the ranks of the G. O. P. as such? There is in that course some argument that in time there will come the opportunity to win a way back into the party council. It can be successfully argued that some of the ills that our followers of the party have suffered has come as a result of the willingness to belt and split at the least sign of struggle or disturbance. If it has been impossible for those leaders to formulate a plan by which the members of the race in Texas count on a machine of power in the party is not to be thought that they have in them the ability to lead them successfully into power in any other party. of power. Now is as good as any of you to learn that the Bible is not to be used for fce today. A new deal is on us and those who "did it" must have what we want. We must fix that it is because it has been found that those who have claimed to be able to lead, have not been able to lead, have not been. Let us not fool ourselves, the fit The Express agrees with the spirit of the resolutions passed by that meeting in Houston. Let the voters of Texas stay with the regular party. Let them, even if by degrees, join the party in the other conventions and, by sheer force of numbers and superiority THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1924 For The Woman Who Cares What-Not Column. By Robert P. Edwards For The Associated Negro Press. of organization win a way back into the deliberations of the party. It can be done. It must be done. That course contains a greater degree of the possibility of finally developing a machine than any other so far offered. And who is there in Texas who does not agree that the soreest need of the voters of our race is an organization in which all of the qualified voters can be assembled and their voting strength concentrated on a given course? THE SOUTH AS A FACTOR IT IS AN UNFORTUNATE historical fact since the formation of the state there a sectional rivalry and antagonism between - what is geographically the South - had as its inception the institution of slavery the existence of white slaves for a period of years through the application and adherence to the pernicious doctrine of slave slavery the right of state to what it pleased and to put any later pretention upon the Constitution it saw fit was thus practically up to date. THE SEQUENTIAL antigenism thus produced continued to grow and the war of the Bollheim. It was supposed to have been terminated when the currender took place at Appleton. But it modified form. What is known as the "Solid South" is now the command. Many today and immediately subsequent maintained that from a party point of view this does not operate to the major parties and can only be the reason that a solid South in support of one of the major parties will produce a stronger, and since the North is the stronger, not only in population but in wealth and productivity the party that represent the North Because of the fact that there has been a sort of halo of respect and awe that has always hovered the church, which all agree has been the most potent force in the development of the race since slavery, that part of the ministry which is uneducated and therefore unable to lead properly those who are not educated, has been the clown that has fallen to the lot of other public servants from time to time. But the plight of the church generally is becoming so acute and it is falling so far short of what is to be expected of it that the time is not far off when there will be a general reversal of feeling on the part of the general public and some attempts to remedy will perforce be taken. it is sad but true that the average member of the pew today is far ahead of the pulpit in the matter of education and the church is not the only one that operates to bring about that sort of disturbances which hamper the life of the community and keep the church from ministering efficiently to the needs of the people. EXPERIENCE has demonstrated that this process of reasoning is unreasonable and impossible for the reason, chiefly that the Southern solidity is not based upon the expressed will of the North. Heck, while Western votes, speak and think according to their own convictions. Hence the North will be solid in the support of any one party only to the extent that said party nests such For The Wom There can be no doubt but that this fact is generally known. And it must be corrected in some way. Just how cannot be said. But figures like these cannot be taken lightly. They tell a story that must not be disregarded of the church is to come again to its place in the life of the people. It is not the church that lies or should lie with these high officials of all of the churches who have hereditary made allowance for the inefficiency of the pastors under them and have given them charge of people who they were not fitted to serve. Let this practice ease. Let the laymen have greater voice in the control of their churches and it will happen that greater preparation will become the rule rather than the exception. Youth in Women. At any age, if she wishes it, a at woman may have her the wisdom and attraction of experience, there are many instances where women in the world have been able to stable fascination on all who meet them to be young in to retain a perpetual costy in living; to live only in the future never in According to our contemporary Charlie Love of Houston, there has been a meeting of the leaders of Texico Negro Republicans in which they passed a set of resolutions calling for the governor to be held a public ticket and to it as far as they were able that the regular G. O. P. nominee were elected to office. One portion of the resolutions indicated that those who were assembled there saw some hope for the ultimate relief of the situation in Texas far as the Negro voter was concerned. Said the resolution. "Great possibilities exist for increasing republican representation from Texas, in the next congress. To do this, there must be effective party organization. We recognize that there is a manifest indifference on the part of Negro republicans, to the present party organization, and that the party organization is committed to influence a policy mimic to the success of the national ticket or the probable success of friends in the party in Texas with a destiny as broad as our Constitution. There is much reason for agreement with the sentiments expressed in that resolution though it will not necessarily happen that the only opportunity for the exercise of our software lies in the support of the Republican Party. 143. What was the Shadrack incident of 1851? There is a group of leaders in Texas who have called on the Negro voters of the state to support the bolt of the former Black and Tan Party, according to advises current, to the third party whose ticket is headed by LaFollette. And, reading "between the lines," as it were, those leaders seem to be inspired by more than the ordinary amount of zeal in behalf of the proposed bolt. They argue that the Negro voters of Texas who naturally are Republican have not been given the square deal by the party in Texas nor in the deference committee. They say that there is no chance for the Texas party to again be considered in the deliberations of the party and the natural thing to do is to go to a party which welcomes him. One of the earliest incidents to arise under the Fugitive slave law was that of Shadrack, a Negro employed in a Boston coffee house. Shadrack was arrested for having escaped from slavery, but as Massachusetts and forbidden the lukik for fugitive cases; the court ordered him to detain their prisoner in the U. S. courtroom. Almost immediately a mob of Negroes broke into the building rescued the prisoner and slipped him into Canada. Great excitement was felt among the rescuers; were inflicted and tried, but the jury disregarded. The incident showed that the new law was not effective in Massachusetts in view of the fact that the rescues had the whole support of "The Vigilance The history of the struggle of the Black and Tan Party in Texas contains a chapter dealing with its beginning which is still rather a closed book to the causal observer. It has to do with the split of the party in San Antonio and the defeat in the Chicago convention. And, consider it as we may there is the feeling that thirgs could have been managed with a greater degree of satisfaction. That chapter it is which will do much to keep the rank and file of the voters of Texas from entering in any whose souled way into the invitation to join the bolt to the third party at the insistence of those leaders who have been followed out of the regular Republican party. 144. Who is Julius Rosenwald? On January 1, 1911, Mr. Julius Rosenwald President of the Good Reebok company of Chicago, made an offer of $250,000 to every city of the United States that would value 750,000 for erecting a building for a colored Men's Christian Association. That the South has been a deciding factor in only four presidential elections since the war of the Rebellion is circumstantial and accidental. Each of the major states has been the beneficiary thereof. THE ELECTIONS referred to in this chapter all of the re-admitted states had been re-admitted into the presidential race in 1868, yet if all of those that had been re-admitted had been solid in support of the Democratic candidate Grant and Cofix would have have been defeated and the Democrat Robert E. Browne in 1876 it was the rules of South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida that resulted in the election of the Democratic candidate, in 1884 Blaine, a Republican, instead of Cleveland, a Democrat who has gone elected to the presidency. THEN AGAIN is a fact that is dongless fresh in the public mind. He has been elected by Hoghes instead of Wilson would have been elected in 1916. Nationally speaking the Democratic party has been the most Southern allies. They not only have a controlling voice in the and not in anti-ballot days, yet it has shaped their policy, but they shape its policy. While sectionalism is not as intense as in anti-ballot days, yet it has shaped their policy, and leaders of the South to aggressively press their claims for nationality. THE CANDIDATE of Underwood of Alabama, an official product of the Democratic party, has tabulated evidence of this face. While he was not successful, a Southerner in the person of John W. Hoghes showed the weakness of the Northern Democrats and the dominating influence of Democratic Bernie Sanders. man Who Cares LONG TREEBLE (1 t). MIDNIGHT TELLS OF THE SILVER JUBILEE IN CHICAGO. CHICAGO ILL. The silver anniversary of the National Negro Business League has just passed into history, and we are now facing the session of the National Baptist Convention, September 10—15 in Nashville, Teen, and Tenn. will follow meetings to follow it, but I think about all the national meetings which are to be held will be over, and the deeds of this year will be a matter of history. Before taking up any other matters, let me say to you that if you want to be a member of the National Baptist Convention to be held in Nashville, Teen, and want to be able to buy a round trip ticket, just drop a line to Prof. R. B. Hudson, Selma, Ala., and he will furnish you with a certificate which you may secure the rate. It will be necessary that you get a document from Secretary Hudson. If you could just attend one session of the National Negro Business League, I am sure that you would thank God for making you to belong to this race with its history in front of it. To take in this great history making epoch, and let those who are to follow you, read of your deeds. You, some of your deeds, some of my wonderful men last week and I am still relicting over the face. The success of this League shows how the mind of men is in harmony with God and how he can make his way into the hearts of others. He works in the constructive brain, and the owing heart of the late Booker T. Washington, the founder of the National Business League. He planted this seed just 25 years ago, and it is still growing, and he is still working with shape & do things. Booker T. Washington planted the seed, and when the time came, he put aside everything and stepped home to heaven, and he was followed by Robert R. Moten, the age, Dr. Robert R. Moten. He is truly successor to Dr. Washington, and he is just putting things I was present when this wonderful organization, was called to order by Editor R. S. Abbott, of that doing so is much to reach the unreach, and to plead the cause of the people. He is a leader, he is devoting his life now in trying to get others in harmony with God, to do his will and render service to others. Well, I just could not hold my people as I heard the story of the struggle of some of the most devoted people in the world. They are insuring others, and causing the black boy to look up and "Tree going to follow that." During this session I met lawyers, bankers, merchants, college presidents, and professors, then newmaness men, teacher, and all fact class, trades professors and business were called into life and others know just what they are. When Editor Abott called the meeting to order, he made some remarks, and then after the open session he welcomed, and when they were through telling them how welcome they were then Dr. Moton was in. He asked the men to respond to the responding men were Mr. Roddy, the business genius and banker from Memphis, Tenn. and Howard, the assistant attorney general of the United States. Both were great men and made speeches. Howard accepted this if you please. Mr. Howard is helping to keep things in order in the United States government, holding a responsible Getting through with the welcome addresses, then Dr. Motton made some remarks and followed them, the men who took part in the organization had some say. I am here to tell you they were the first to know James E. Shepard, of Durham, N.C. Do you know him? He is the ground master of Masone for the University of North Carolina than that, because he is an educator. He established a tithing school known as National Relief School, and also made such wonderful progress, and doing such good work until the state decided that it was time to move to a new institution, in so now it is a state institution. and Dr. Shapur in still the pres- ident. Spandling, president of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, of Durham, N.C. and I remember you have told me about this great company, the oldest, the strongest and the wealthiest in this country, and it is constantly spreading over other states. The president is a man of vision, a man of ability, and a business man, and associated with him is that business genius of the world to make you know him, because of his wonderful ability, and what he is doing for his race in many particulars. He is an active layman in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and a man with power. He had much to say in the last general conference, Ky. I was right there and saw the things go through. Mr. Spandling is imprintered of one of the largest if not very largest Sunday School in America, the White Rock Baptist tundray School of Durham, N.C. Now you see the combination president Baptist, vice-president that means things hang nothing. Now you talk about education and educators. I met two men who represented their work, and they made some speeches. You will recall how North Carolina went up into the million dollar business. You will remember the state. I told you about the one which was taken over headed by Dr. Shepard, and Prof. F. B. Fulcher, who graduated of the college, made a wonderful address on "Education," and he was followed by Berry O'Kelly and Irene O'Kelly, who what a wonderful agriculture man Prof. Bullock. He was a paid tribute to what he termed one of the educational line-Prof. N. G. Newboulden who had charge of the educational work among my peers. It seemed to me that Mr. Newland was well known, for when he met Kelly he received an enthusiastic ovation from all those present. So he asked Kelly to speak, and that plea that Dr. Robert M. Rojas paid him a word of praise. Then Mr. D. O Kelly paid his respects to Dr. Newland, and he addressed, education, headed by A. T. E. Brown, director, and he spoke of the trail education at A and T. college, and spoke of other great professors. Prof Hudson, extension director and J. D. Wray, I enjoyed settling the information which was dishied That session of the National Negro Business League has passed now. The next great thing now is that "the most organized organisation which is destined to be the great things ever launched by the race, and with Dr. Robert S. Johnson, is able to do some real work. This is the latest thing, and believe me when I tell you the money is beaten. It will push us in business. I think I will have to bring this letter to a stop, and in doing so I will have to write a new Jerry Jr., of 706 North Linden Jr., Texas, who wrote me such a nice letter. I am glad to find that he has made up his mind that he has made up his mind that he is going to let this book. He has passed through it. It has thrilled my heart to get such letters from men who have accomplished things are men and women who had to learn how to read and to educate their education. The lives of such men—that in so many read books they had to make it. Get inspired from Booker T. Washington. The from Slave River then, the from the Civil War, and I could mention others. Time will not permit me to go into all. When you read this letter I will write to you some time. A letter will reach me 1341 Third Street, D. C. I am going so. J. O. MIDNIGHT.
