As you know, our laws further provide that its surplus funds wherever deposited shall draw interest on the daily balances. In accordance with this law all funds of the Order in the hands of the Treasurer do now draw on the average daily balances at the rate, we understand, of four (4) per cent per annum from date of deposit. It is therefore clear that by not remitting funds to the Treasury on the fifth (5) day of each month as required by law, Bro. Hiddle has caused the Order to lose during the past several years several thousand dollars that it has been and now is justly entitled to receive. Our endowment has been based upon the assumption that the surplus funds will at all times draw interest at least at the rate of four (4) per cent per annum. So when the funds fall to be placed where they will draw this interest, our adequate rates become inadequate and the solvency of the Order becomes seriously disturbed. It also announces that in several of the leading schools of the country exchange professors are lecturing on the necessity of a bettered relation between the Jewish and Protestant churches. Among the schools which are leading in this movement are the University of Chicago, Oberlin University, McCormick University and Union Theological Seminary. In addition to this, newspapers are cooperating in the movement by publishing articles and in some of the cities, particularly of the East, forums composed of members of both churches hold periodical meetings in which the topics of interest to both of them are discussed freely. In the city of Chicago a paid secretary whose duty it is to foster the movement has made a case of better day in America. They show that out of the fog of prejudice and misinformation which has kept the members of different races and sects from seeing the better features of each other, there is coming in a time in which each WH seek to know the other in order that the other may be able to understand the movement which most directly concerns the Negro is the Interracial movement and without exaggeration it may be said to have made the greatest amount of progress. Its bodies exist in many of the Southern cities where, twenty years ago they could not have been thought of by those who were born in the North, but by actually bringing it to pass that the two races know each other in a more favorable way. All of these things point to the ultimate rebirth of America in spiritual ways. They indicate that the things which have seemed to make up the most important part of our lives are not the things that are to things of a better sort. And in this connection it must be remembered that America is young. Less than five hundred years old, it must in many ways have the same sort of immature national thought which can only be changed by the development of our culture which time only can bring. With the development of its resources will come more leisure to a greater number of her people and, with this leisure there will come opportunity for the study of the things which lead to greater culture and higher thinking. It now is only in its forma- A realization of this fact should lead members of our group to a realization of the tremendous responsibility which rests upon them, for the constant presentation of opportunities for the spread of the truth in regard to the things which hinder the race in its attempts to make an acceptable contribution to the welfare of the country, there should be an increase of the determination to find a solution to the problem, and to consideration of every student who is seeking for the truth. "Nowly coming to the realization that as long as the law of the land do not protect every man alike, no man is safe. We pray for the day when the courage of the officers of the law from judges down will force them to practice what they know.-- Those who feel that the segregation cases of Dallas are completely won are wrong. The battle for this human right on the part of the Negroes of this city has just begun. If won, it will mean another prisession possession for the Negro children of the future for which they will thank those who are responsible for the violence, in effect, it is a battle for human rights which is of as much importance to members of other races as it is to Negroes themselves. Its beginning marks an epoch in the thinking of our group here. Health conditions while improving, are serious. There were 1,287 deaths in 1992, 161 percent of them being from tuberculosis, and 1,131 deaths in 1923, 13.68 per cent from tuberculosis as compared with 7.8 percent of the total number of deaths of white people in the latter year from the same disease. During that campaign an attempt was made to link the newly-formed organization to the Republican party, but those soldiers responsible for the Lincoln Legion were unanimous in their decision to make the Lincoln Legion independent of any political party or any political group, and on that principle the Lincoln Legion went into temporary organization. "It was deemed necessary to give the organization a temporary name—to elect temporary officers—and to draft a temporary constitution in order to establish a working basis for a permanent organization when a larger and more representative group of ex-service men could work out the details and perfect the organization. But even though the number was small and even the representative as it must be in order to do effective work, nevertheless a beginning was made. The instrument was created. What it should be, how it should operate, who should guide and direct it, all these things were left to the ex-service men who shall assemble in Chicago, August the 10th and 11th.
