It appears that in former years it has been well nigh impossible to accumulate data from which to make a scientific study of Negro morality in the United States. Lack of registration of births and deaths of Negroes due to the very often found sentiment to the effect that such data was of no consequence is probably accountable for the fact. But at last the United States Public Health Service has completed one which makes public some significant facts. Chief among those which came to our attention were the following taken from the summary of the recent release under title of "Morality among Negroes in the United States"; figures tend to show that Negroes are intimately worse off in cities, than they are in rural areas; and that Negroes are more likely to be younger in the southern states than they are in the north; the trends of morality from all causes in three southern cities studied show no significant difference between the white and Negro populations; among the causes of infant morality among Negroes premature birth is the highest, and it was to be expected that the number of infants born to Negroes decrease among Negroes is the greatest number of deaths.

That the majority of Negro babies die in premature birth is also understandable in the light of a casual study of the economic condition of the race in the south. Women are forced to work at hard labor and for long hours if there is to be any sort of family life on a livable scale within the race. Laundries, work at hard labor, do for their labor supply up on Negro women as well as up on white women and the labor is exacting while the pay, according to southern custom, is conspicuous small. Long hours necessitate much nourishment; a thing practically impossible on small wages, such as are paid Negro workers. It is a noteworthy fact that Negro labor *ob* whatever, *sort* receives smaller compensation than white labor in the same line in the same building. Understand then that Negro women are expected and are to continue to be expected as long as such conditions maintain. Even in cities like Dallas this is the case.
The fact that the trend of mortality for he two races in the same section do not show any noticeable difference indicates the justice of such reasoning as has been done in this discussion and argue as well that a change in the conditions under which Negroes are treated in the United States should regard to their mortality rate. And in the final analysis this must be done if either of the races is to survive in the south or elsewhere in America for that matter. Constant contact makes diseased Negroes a menace to physically fit whites. They must continue to come in contact with each other in the ordinal order of their conditions of concern about the living conditions of Negroes from the standpoint of the other more humane considerations are not possible to those who must handle the affairs of our cities? Decent living conditions are the right of every living human being. He is not to be held accountable for conditions over which he has been treated. He ought a thing different and apart as the result of dislaboration. All health studies should be continued. Bulletins such as this should come out as often as the available material is gathered. And the studies should be lengthened to include the remedies for the conditions which exist as well as argument that they do not cause American social order to make progress, all parts or races. It is so arranged that the death to the desired level. It is not a job for separate and distinct parts or races. It is so arranged in the American scheme of things that all are hurt or hindered by the hindrance of any other part. Negro health is as important as general health. It
A STEP WHICH WE ALL WILL APPLAUD.
THE SPIRIT BEHIND THE HARMON AWARDS
For several years The Harmon Foundation has made awards to Negroes who proved the most progressive in the fields of art, science, business, etc. The gifts have been in money and in medals and in each case a corps of competent judges has questioned the record of each nomination and made the awards on the basis of actual accomplishment and ability. No little attention has been to the good deeds of the race by this means. The reason for this is that the Negroes made public recently by the donors is that "Negroes suffer a much from a belief in their own inability to accomplish as from the lack of belief in their capacities on the part of others." The awards seek to improve this condition by, at the same time that they call public attention to the attainments of Negroes in the fields of art, science, business, etc. by highlighting the attention of the members of the race itself to the fact that these persons have actually done the worth while things.
In thus subjugating the later, more aware of their postpartum and milk, we really strive to bring racial institutions without regard for the needs of the race. We have abrogated the masses and the continued support of the whole of the race in international. It requires facts first. It often adopts - measures which are the most important to the who must share them as are the moral considerations which are the least recent in the offices to save the lives of the people. In this case it has been true. Forced to adopt the life of an institution, they did the most temperate things possible to the life of an institution. They did the most temperate things possible to the life of an institution. They did the most temperate things possible to the life of an institution. And as it was one of the first to criticize them in their own discourse, they came to view them for this island. And for this policy of criticism and denunciation for this island, and for this policy of criticism and denunciation for this island, it is justified in the course. More strength to them, more success for them, their aim
This statement is founded in fully proven psychological reason. Just as men learn to do by doing, they become confident of their abilities to accomplish by the realization that they have accomplished largely. This realization is definitely stimulated by the experience that he has found their deeds worthy of notice and favorable mention. That is why he do to their best. And certainly it is true that unfortunate psychology mentioned in the reasons advanced by the backers of the foundation do exist among us. They find utterance in the very often heard statements to the effect that "anything is good enough for a Negro" or in others to the effect that "such things are good enough not to apply to the gross." This sentiment is found all the way from the need of excellence in zenmon preparation to the handling of courses of study in schools in which Negro children are trained for the work of life. It is at the bottom of the sentiment often attributed to jealousy which is evidenced when members of the race criticize one another for desiring good things for the home. This sentiment is also evident in hindering movements which have to do with the improvement of communities and it is at the back of the sooty which greets

STATES so many of the movements forward which the more progris-
sive members of the race institute from time to time.
To do away with such a sentiment is to guarantee to every
Negra a better chance to succeed. It is the very essence of encouragement and help. And there can be no doubt that in time to come, when we are not so close to it as we are now, The Har-
man Award can be seen for their dedication to our institu-
tion, and we wi be responsible for its institu-
tion not only have studied our condition closely but they have
gone courageously and efficiently about the improvement of that
condition.

Before attempting a curve of the field of contemporary art, it will advantage us to train a backward glance upon the poetic tradition of the Nigra, to what is the purpose of the tradition will be referred in two sections. 1. The Heritage of Song: 2. The Passant Renascence. This backward glance will concompend all that was sang or written by colored people from Jupiter Hanson to Paul Laurence Dawson. It will be expected to exhibit a gift for poetry. His gift for oratory has been acknowledged. The fact has been accepted without reflection upon its admirability. It should have been foreseen that because of the stone kinship between art and poetry the Nigra would come day with, and perhaps with, the gift of art, as he has already achieved distinction in the former art.

Dear Nan,
I have been made a victim of circumstances in my home town and now everybody is down on me. We have a world of people who expect girls to go through life with an angelic face and hug down head, both little and big. PETER B.
By Chas. W. Abington.
We may reasonably assume that the other boats which went with Jesus the night before had returned to Capernaum and spread the news of the two wonderful miracles of calming the storm and healing the demonite of Galian, and the morning found the shore lined with anxious people wishing to see some new manifestation of His mighty power. He had been forced to return without getting the heat. He had gone there to find in the quiet of the Gadararae hill—though He had been asked to leave there He was always welcome in Capernaum, and as the boat came in night barring the wonderful Rabbi the news spread rapidly. He was able to hope in the heart of Jairus, the ruler of the syagimose, and the woman who had suffered twelve years—having suffered many things at the hands of many physiologists. Jesus had hardly handed when Jairus came to Him in the interest of his little daughter who was at the point of his death. He had received from the rabis, and the ruling class, we imagine the humiliation this proud Pharisee must have felt in coming to the hated Galilean carpenter. But all pride is lost sight of in the sorrow that the loving father felt to have been going down into the jaws of death. Other writers make the point that she was his only daughter.
Jairus at the Feet of Jesus.
Regardless of the curious throngs this poudr ruler pressed his way to Jesus forgetting all about what others might think or say. It often happens that our prides can only be broken by sorrow—as long as all is well at home and property shines along our pathway we forget to pray, we forget to call on the only one who can help us under all circumstances. But Jairus was desperately in earnest and only did he come as a supplicant, but just as servants and alms prostrate themselves to those of superior rank in all Eastern countries. The haughty ruler fell at the feet of Jesus and prayed for his little daughter. With his desperation and keen anxiety, the pleas he made to the Great Shepherd all came to the child. All of the best physicians had failed, but the ruler called to mind the healing of the noble Gentiles servant—who said that he was not worthy, that he should come under his roof, but only speak the word, and his servant would be able to forgive him for anything but the touch of the great Healer. He came at a time when Jesus was in the midst of His teaching and many hung on His words at the time, but the cry of dismay was not turned away. He arose and went with the ruler.
Jairus Experiences a Disquieting Delay.
As Jesus went with the ruler followed by a curious obstinate a painful experience awaited Jairus—hastening a skull as the crowd permitted a sudden hatch is made. Another supplicant, for help falls in the way—a woman whose name is not given approaches, and the trembling hand thrust through the throng touched the border of his whole crowd. We can easily put in Jairus' place—
It must have been quite annoying to him—likely he thought their brains should damage to him. He wanted them brains should damage to him. The child cribbing away when he left and delay might be dangerous. But Jamaa stopped and asked, "Who touched me." Even the disciples thought it strange that He should ask such a question. He had been afflicted twelve years, had spent all she had and suffered many things of many physicians. She heard of Jamaa and believed He could heal her, but not knowing what he could do. He thought He should not touch her garmament but should white. With them was an old superstition that there was magical virtue in the garmments of certain people which would flow out without any act or will on their part. The woman ex-

4. While the anxious father worried over the delay that was being occasioned by what he regarded a needless interruption—for while Jesus was pronouncing a blessing upon the woman he sees a messenger approaching and he know that it was now too late. Only once before had the woman seen a messenger from Nain, but this might not have come into the mind of the ruler of the synagogue at that time. The hunt messenger said your daughter is dead, why trouble ye the Master. It is likely that they indicated that it would have done no harm to you. The messenger finally make the evil tidings but was not the least worried—but turns to console the father. He then goes on, the mourning and begun. It is a custom even down to this day in the East for the family to employ professional messengers to make the home a tremble with their walls. As they approach the home and Jesus said that the child was only sleeping, they laughed Him to scorn. They knew that she was really dead—but that in the light in which Jesus would have un regard death, to Him it is only a sleep.
Jesus Chooses Peter, James and John to See the Wonderful Sight.
Expelling all from the room save the mother, father and Jesus favored disciples, they at once go into the room, and Jesus took the child by the hand and bade her arise, and she responded to His words. What manner of man is this they began to say—and they say the same. One who was the messenger came to the Ministry of Jesus raise the dead. Jairus thought it was too late when the messenger came with the sad news that his little daughter was dead.
many times this father had heard Jesus preach and work those wonderful miracles he never thought of needing to do. He was a teacher of Jesus' Jairus, but surrey he became a disciple of the Master from that day forward. What joy and rejoicing filled that home when the voice of that little girl was heard once more, that father and mother; had seen their darling child released from death. It is just like Jesus. He always brings joy, and he always has a place in the home when He comes. Having restored the child to life, Mark tells us that He did not forget the body—he told them to give her something to eat. He will be equally considerate of all who feel the need of Him today. It is just enough for us to read of the wonderful things Jesus did. He will be able to tell us that He did not true He will respond just as truly to faith today if we call with all our heart as the afflicted man and dairies.
living restored, the child. At 12 o'clock the pastor preached. Knowing those things, Mr. A. M. is a wonderful agent which asks on it. Freely, why don't you forget the body—the child. He will be simply. The B. Y. P. I. was called to sight? With you, it should be a day of Him today. It is today. You are in question of your life. The B. Y. P. I. is putting on your shirt. It is indeed a business use—it is being used—it is all covered the union lesson, indeed why you are willing to work. It is to faith today if we preached a sible sermon, two good gifts, to provide

Another wonderful quarter has become history. Wonderful from many viewpoints. Beginning with a rally on Thursday night in which nearly all of the churches joined, the local numbers of St. Paul A. M. E. church had many remarkable quarter, considering the very inclement weather. The rally netted something over $215.00. Friday night a very spiritual love-feast was had. Sunday opened with a live wire Sunday School, and the morning service was all filled with worship. The evening service all of the A. M. E. churches responded and more than $30.00 was raised. At night Sacrament was had. Monday night, Dr. C. L. Morgan, the very efficient pastor had all his forces lineed up in front of the church reports and, 20,000, except the Trustees which had $10.00. All reports were well prepared and bespoke the deep regard and confidence they have for their pastor. The pastor presented the Presiding

Dr. Morgan is doing a wonderful work. His church is well organized; his services are up to date. His vested chair is Mr. Morgan, and he is very close to having raised Sunday and Monday night $11000. Thus making St. Paul rank fourth in the Quarterly Conference rounds. God bless Rev. Morgan and his faithful membrien. Including the rally, $250.00 was raised. Next week, Rev. Morgan will be hosting Rev. J. Comey. We are on our way to Birmingham, Ala., to the Bishop's Council.

Sunday was a high day at the school. (Do you know that your desks, Harriet M. H. C. R. School wife who has attended by our side is a teacher?) The teacher was to be in the washroom, so I left at his post. The school was to be in the washroom, so I attended. The master of the kitchen or P-room, should you have a kitchen, was to be in the washroom.
