ENDOWMENTS FOR NEGRO SCHOOLS ```markdown ``` Recent announcements indicate that The General Educational Board and other foundations which for many years have been dedicated to the education of the Negro, have decided to help in the permanent endowment of Negro schools. They have made promises of gifts which run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars; and all of the gifts so far announced have been made conditional upon the raising of a like amount by the schools themselves. The provision is equivalent to saying that the race itself must contribute a like amount. The Express commends the action of the boards and urges the schools to prove the love of the race for them by attempting the collection of the amounts which are necessary. The time already is when the real spirit of the Negro far as his education is concerned, should be tried and tested. For more than two score years these schools have been maintained at the expense of northern philanthropy and such grants as have been available from the foundations. That was as it should have been; for the race was in no position to do well by these institutions had it so desired. Its economic status would not have permitted. But that stage of racial life is rapidly disappearing. The race is accumulating considerable wealth and with all other developments, is coming to the point of feeling that it is producing men and women who are capable of heading these schools. THE DALLAS EXPRESS "The he who pays the piper calls the tune" runs an ancient adage. And the Express is of the opinion that to "pay the piper" more will entitle the "calling of more tunes," so to speak. We should have the feeling that we are making progress along all lines. We really are making it. We should prove that we have made progress by willingly an eagerly shouldering the burden of the endowment of our schools, and we are making progress in the performance they acceptably. It may be difficult at first. But there is no better way to try ourselves than in the performance of the most difficult appearing tasks. These foundations have always been known as benefactors of the race and in this latest step in connection with Negro schools, they are going to reap more definitely truthful reputation than ever before. Randolph has called off his strike because the head of the American Federation of Labor did not feel that the time was propitious. "The strike machinery" will remain intact however, according to reports coming out of the office of the President, Mr. Randolph. The statement of the Pullman Company was to the effect that it was prepared to fill any vacancies made by a strike and that its schedules would in no wise be affected. It was also rumored that many unemployed white men had applied for jobs in the event that the strike really took place. The Behavior of Our The condition of the chorems on last Friday night was more than ordinary. It was a real cultural entertainment, and one on which every patron should have shown up. Numbered in that audience were music jovens or bolds race as well winners of the chords which appeared on the program. But it is impossible to be truthful and to know the nature of that audience of that audience was commensurate with the dignity of the program. It was distinctly below per. It was many times when numbers on programs do not exist the taste of some of these present. In fact, there is nothing, of current interest, which appears with like force, to all persons viewing the chords of some more than simple politeness for those who may not be particularly pleased, together with a different kind to the full benefit of the performance. That was the point, taking, whispering that banquet had good proportions that it was impossible for those who really were interested Our constitutes and manners of the most noticeable坏 it is a good recommendation for our students and culture. And these are days in which hostility is not, to be tolerated in gentle talk. In fact, no excuse can be made now on the ground of hostility. The daily papers in communicating upon the performance attributed the lack of attention to the ignorance of those who were not present almost completely spilled the overlying. Of others who found good in every number of students, the most portent beetly the sting of such a situation. It always never happens again. Common courtesy to artists and patients demanded in many parts of performance be at most as fair to others as he would that they so in him. The quality that our audience to improve in manners. THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DAILAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1928 TUNE Thomas Fortune is dead. His active life covered the most dynamic half century in human history. More rapid and radical changes than the old planet of ours had witnessed from creation's dawn to the time of his arrival. These world sweeping movements pressured upon him. He lived in a limited racial world. The onward sweep of forces makes him a victim. And the cosmic sweep of science, discovery, invention, the world of art, religion and practical life, he stood out and different from claring voice, that righted the salvation of the nation. Like unto a voice crying in the wilderness, moment, then stopped its ear to the impatient wallings of the con- Fortune was born in the year of the Proof Decision, a decision by the years of the Civil War. As soon as his brother, the captain of the spirit, he was caught up in the whirl of Reconstruction. Newer and more nourishing and stimulating pallium. His soul made instant response to that misunderstanding. The Army and Caucasus blood kept his naissance. His health was motivated by the unbounced pressure. The waters of liberty were swollen and his health was magnified in these. We were the days that men's souls were washed ashore in this year. Fortune his soul. Contrast that day with this day. The rallying cry of liberty; the watchword of the war; the purchase of liberty; the purchase of liberty; the youth of our day is invoked for the craze for luxury and the excitement of session. A reverent and devout Fortune is in good that he got religion fifty years ago, for it would be impossible for him to get it now. The desire to indoctrination into the grimaldi plea of liberty and the rights of liberty. THAT PULLMAN STRIKE THREAT The Express has always contended that non-in all occaessions should have the right to bargain collectively. But it has also contended that there was intelligent procedure in making progress and unintelligent procedure in the making of such a procedure. The guilty of anything other than an excess of seal in his strike vote and his consequent statements concerning forcing the Mediation Board to review the case of the maids and porters. But he certainly was guilty of casely handling dynamite which, if set off, would have blown to atoms a large part of the Negro economic scheme in this country. WHY NOT SOME BLACK LA FOLLETTES Realizing that his effort was doomed to defeat but anxious, even to the point of enduring ridicule in order that his views might be brought to the public, young La Follette, representing the progressive Republicans of Minnesota, read a minority platform report in the recently closed Republican convention and instead of running ridicule, received tremendous applause. He got his ideas before the convention. He stated his convictions. And there is president for the prediction that he made some converts in that convention and caused some thought in time to come, will help in the realization of some of the very ideas which now are called ridicules. Would it be a far fetched idea for some Negro member of a future Republican convention to do the same thing? Would it be well worth whatever of ridicule was attached to have the country through its representatives assembled there know that the Negro in America is tired of hearing the same old "anti-lynching song" thrown out to him by the government itself. It is not being enacted in the very departments of the government itself. Would it not be well worth enduring the wrath of a guilty party to have it known once and for all that the Negro is not being fooled by the seeming interest in the preservation of his rights when distranchisement runs rampant in the very states from which come the readers of the hypothetical platform and when the rotten borough system of the south is in the moths of all really democratic America. Our Negro leaders stood and slead, he bewildered uttering vain impressions against the despairers, the insulters, the insulters, the insulters. When the Negro was in the warring of a political fragment, of his twentieth year. There was no Negro senator, nor numerous administrators. Fifty years later of every one had been driven from the land, and the town was destroyed. So great has been the anaclysm from the days of great to the days of Unification, and this with an inward groaning, too clear for utterance. The expulsion and suffrage of every ground for the solution of the problem of Negroity is the only solution, and indeed it is, but how can the rob. Palatino troop said, "Educe will solve the problem." Fortune has lived to see the infirmity of the world and the widespread knowledge. The religions used to say, "Religion is beginning at the house of God." That came Booker W. Washington, a man of the old fashioned gram of the old fashioned virtues of thrift, economy and industriousness. He virtue, have their own, reward, but they rarely touch the race and the amalgamation of all sudden generations in all sudden Surely it is. But how can the Newly-become amalgamate him, will he become amalgamate with him? Frederick Douglass said, "Get whitelist." Marquis T. Washington said, "Get whitelist." T. Washington said, "Get Fortune's deserving soul, erner be baffled and buffeted by all other expeditients, included to the extent that he again he found that it is as hard for the Nedro to get out as it is for Fortune to get along with Fortune's dying soul witnessed Mr. Fortune's life measures the progress and regress of the race. But it tells us little or nothing of the future. He found the race to be a dangerous one and leaves it with neither. The new generation must find and protect a protective close copy. A race will be adequate to the change conditions or our day is the unfulfilled. If the wisdom of this day and generation possessed but a modi-mental change, conservation that: characterized Thomas T. Fortune and his day will find the way out. Thirteen years ago Ben Boe, a Negro, was sent to the penitentiary for thirty years for a crime that he had attempted to attack her. The woman is nearling her conscience and adds to the unavoidable disease and has but lately relieved her conscience and added hoods on the stand and sent Boe to prison for a crime or which he has been denied.
