MEMBER
NATIONAL HECHO-PRESS
ASSOCIATION
Within a few months now all of the citizens of Dallas will be called on to choose their public servants for another two year term. Already the bases are being laid for the rival camps and candidates and opposing factions are grooming themselves for the battle. What part in all of this will the many Negro citizens play?
THE DALLAS EXPRESS
PUBLISHING CO.,
(Incorporated)
DALLAS, TEXAS
The asking of that question brings again forebay to mind the past campaign when the whole group and many of the leading politicians of the other group were brought to their feet by the unwanted type of participation done by the members of the race race. Led by several of those who apparently felt that the choosing of men to serve a city depended on personal likes or dislikes, the campaign among Negroes run the whole political gamut. From an a t t e m p t to choose city officials it became a common "meas" in which pulpits were used for the vilification of neighbors and fellows in race and in which all sorts of personal bitterness made itself evident. Some parts of it were libellous and all of the latter end was shameful and unworthy of a group of children. Instead of choosing a platform of principles by which to judge those who would serve them, some of the leaders of opposing factions among us choose them because of their money, families, church affiliations or something else not determined. And now for the past two years, instead of being able to choose, the leaders of the group led the former campaign are anxious that nothing further be said about the promises which they made to their own people in the name of the candidates whom they represented.

Candidates for city governments are just men. They espouse all of the statutes of the city, the laws and the ability to control and get votes is of prime importance to them. Their promises before election, if they are so interested as to make them, depend for their keeping largely on the ability of those to whom they made to command us in the other one, votes, the ability to keep and control them, play a large part. And so it would seem to the Express that the Negro citizens of Dallas who are hoping to profit so largely from the city would be anxious to see in the Urikkion Plan, would be anxious to see to the election of men whose duty to a group which needs so largely, would heavily upon them. The coming group of city officials must be dedicated to the fair and impartial handling of the city. Our interest in this project is purely personal at first consideration. A Negro library, an art gallery to which we will be allowed to go with study groups, improved streets in the order named in the plan, and in all of this the next two year period, the employment of Negro labor in such quantities as will relieve the almost pitiful labor condition which now maintains in our city among us. SUCH VOTES IN LARGE NUMBERS AND UNDER SUCH TELLIGENT LEADERSHIP AS TO MAKE THEIR CULTIVATION WELL WORTH WHILE NOTHING BUT THE PROMPT PAYMENT OF POLL TAX WILL GIVE WHOSE WOULD GROOM THEMSELVES FOR POLITICAL LEADERSHIP AMONG US IN THIS CAMPAIGN SHOULD START QUALIFYING NOW BY WORKING EFFECTIVELY FOR BRINGING THIS ABOUT. AT LEAST HELP TO CHOOSE THE NEXT CITY OFFICIALS, THE EXPRESS IS INTERESTED IN SEEING THIS DONE.

OUR GROWING NEGRO BUSINESS CONCERNS
All of these concerns mean more money passing through New York and New Jersey, not reliable living. And though it will probably never have landed in New York, it will be handled by them. The Negroes for the necessities of life will be handled by them. The Negroes for the necessities of work will be handled for constantly. Five, there are in Dallas who have been able to make economic situation as far as an Negroes themselves as far as an African American. The fact that two of them had opportunity to make money or or not made money, the fact that they had not entered into the field in which the most recent investment. More than 16,000,000. More annually by an in India. In addition to that, other necessities, it is easy to see that the Negroes would not have worked, and materially to the well being financially, of many more of us.
NO NEGRO COMMERCIAL PILOTS
It remains new for the general itelms to help to make of these problems there will be no disinformation on account of color. Things are begged without any restraint, and we are rather than the exception when purchases are contemplated. Children are considered of poor treatment. In either states downhill, this book is one of each place's pleasure. And our intent is to whom they are destined, which we were disheartled
THE DALLAS EXPRESS, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1926
POLIRECAL ORIENTATION
The recently expressed opinion of the president of The American Federation of Labor to the effect that the membership drive of this year will include Negro workers of all sorts is extremely gratifying to many who have thought much on the problem of American labor as it applies to the country generally. Herefore it has not been the policy of this organization to seek the membership of Negroes and there has naturally been a hindrance to its progress and to the progress of America by reason of it. There is now the hope that the decision to admit them will bring all labor into the same organization, make more effective the organization, and thereby, the condition of the Negro workers of this country.
Much of the failure in past time of the federation to make its demands clearly seen and heard has resulted from its inability to control the whole of the labor market and from the fact that the market is not part of that market. Whether the unwillingness to admit him on an equal basis because of color was the prime reason for his exclusion as a class cannot be said. But the fact remains that the results have not been grafting and that the federation neither highly effective as an organization for the past few years.
Immigration has been restricted by Congress. Fewer tabbers of other races are coming into this country. The labor market is being made more attractive every year by the expansion of American manufacturing. The Negro must be in larger and larger numbers if the demand is to be applied. His exclusion from employment which he has been unable to handle the shortened hours will mean that soon these conditions may be modified downward. His economic condition makes it necessary that he work at something for some sort of wage. His inclusion into the federation will mean just the opposite. His wage will be the regular wage, not the minimum wage. He will send in just the proportion that he is included in the organization. His general let will be bettered and America will profit by reason of having raised the status of another large group of its citizens who otherwise would contribute largely to it and large and unfortunate unemployment situations with their corresponding drains upon the purse. Negro workers will be able to hope that the expressed intention of the federation to include Negro workers will take such definite form as to bring large results.
A group of members of the race in Los Angeles have formed the Beesie Coleman Aero Club and are seeking to qualify for licenses as commercial pilots in aviation. They have been working with the Aero Club to doubtful other coaches connected with the art of managing heavier than air machines has past and that they must seek entry into this newer and larger American field. They are to be commanded for their decision. It is high time that the Aero Club should be given the opportunity to poorly financed Negro air enthusiasts should cease, and that those of that permanent who sought an offer for their abilities should confine them to profitable fields. No more formidable organization could be had to undertake the work that the National Association is active the race voice and representation inside the circle of the government. Negroni core, the organization that has made and made judgment can contribute effectively to the political good of the election. The elimination of the Nervo from a controlling say in South Carolina politics, for many years to come, can only speak for limited local office. We have not slight bearing upon the state organizations of which they constitute, with acceptable control of effective votes, no one may say with the power that be or desire to be held accountable with the power that be or desire to be held accountable with the power that be or desire to be held accountable with the power that be and the disposition to change the government that your voice will be heard and in the mean time the race will have to rely chiefly upon the power that be to secure its rights under the law to secure its justice and to secure the conscience of the nation has become to the voice of justice and to the conscience of the nation, and such please be wholly unhoused.

I have often wanted to write to you but I suppose like most men have never taken the time to do so. I have written to the Altoe Lilies in the last issue of the Express, I fell that I must write in defense of the men. I found them too hard to write, and with high discipline, and all that sort of thing and I suppose want the same thing. But I won’t want the same thing. Why men do these things. I for one can speak from experience. Not very long ago I began going to the University and much and much had no joy of the experience. In any way, I tried in many ways to demonstrate my fondness for the men. I saw many of the bills at the Fair Park, Auditorium and yanduvelie such as the tax fare supermarket, the tax office and candy. I even gave up earrings not other girls because the

t of his labor while a prisoner in Rome.
After the "memorable voyage to Rome in which Paul encountered some of the most thrilling experiences of his ewful life, we left him in our last lesson in Rome living in his own hired house the prison at the Lord Jesus. Already he had begun his work after a rest of but three days. It is even pointed out by some writers, that the three days mentioned were not spent in recreation—but holding fellowship with the Christians of Rome and learning the conditions of the church in that city. This ended he sent for the leading Jews of Rome to request to Rome as prisoner and, at their request, make plain to his countrymen the bases of his belief, in the sect which "was "every where spoken against." These Jews came in large numbers to hear Paul when, when they could not agree among themselves nor to the claim that was being made by Paul, that the crucified Christ was the promised Mashiah spoken of in the law and by the prophets. Paul feels free to turn to the lesson shown from the fruits of his labor while a prisoner in Rome.
THE TRUE BASIS OF FRIENDSHIP
years ago a prize was offered for the best friendship and this was the one which was “A friend is the person who comes in when you has gone out.” Solomon says: “All times.” It is said a friend may well be named for friendship or for tripadvisor. Friendship may be a matter and detail—this is beautifully illuminated of the great Apostle—the sketch we have Acta and Epistles show what singular pity to attract men to himself and his work. It is also a reminder of the numerous no consideration of friendship even his course. It is said that Henry Druid Scotch Evangelist possessed in a charm of friendship that enabled him to offer his services to Drummond, and every friend of like the apostle who loved his friends too a to their faults or indifferent as to their remembered. “That the words of a fraternity are not the words of a friend.” In love and truth must ever be he in these Paul possessed in neither distance nor human imperfective affections nor blunted the keen edge of PAUL THE FRIEND OF ALL MEN is man happy who may number his friends, life—from those representing the higher and those who are numbered among the in our present lesson our attention is called in Acta 2004, when Paul was on his way to Jerusalem. He sent to him, he sent for the elders of the church he him. When they had arrived he pres last sermon, taking them that it was he would see them no more. It is one of fatha in Acta 2004, when he saw the hearts of men. Paul closes the service liveling in the sand while he commends they embraced him and kissed him show their love for their good pastor who had been a friend in his situations twenty two whom he sends greetings. One who has a son's friends say seventy four are named Epistles.
Some years ago a prize was offered for the best definition of friendship and this was the one which was awarded the prize. "A friend is the person who comes in when every moment of your life is at all times." It is said that a friend may well be recorded the masterpieces of nature. Paul was blessed with a peculiar genius for friendship. Friendship may never be forgotten in the life of the great Apostle—the sketch we have of his life in the Acts and Epistles show what singular power he possessed to attract men to himself and his work, but they were not always so powerful and rightlooseness, no consolation of friendship ever turned him from his course. It is said that Henry Drummond, the young Scottish Evangelist possessed in a charming degree "the grace of friendship that enabled him to offer to those who were not so well versed in his life and therem Drummond, and every friend of like quality, resembled the apostle who loved his friends too sincerely to be held to their souls or indifferent as to their repugnance." He was always better at all times than the precious balms of an enemy that break the head." Love and truth-must be the basis of genuine friendship—the Paul possessed in marked strength and courage that he chilled his infections nor blunted the keen edge of his love.
PAUL THE FRIEND OF ALL MEN ____,
The man is happy who may number his friends from all walks of life—from those representing the highest social standing, and those who are numbered among the poor and humble. In our present lesson our teacher, Paul, was on his last journey to Jerusalem and when the stop was made by their ship at Miletus, he sent for the elders of the church to come down to see him. When they had arrived he praached to them and told them that he would see them no more. It is one of the most peltic speeches in all literature and shows Paul's ability to grip the hearts of men. Paul closes the service with prayer—all kissing in the sand while he commended them for their love. Paul also describes the depth of their love for their good pastor who had labored with them for three years. In the last chapter to the Romans Paul crowds in his salutations twenty two personal friends to whom he sends greetings. One who has made a name for himself says seventy four are named in Aces and Paul's Heels.

The problem now arose what was to be done with Oneius.—he was the property of Phlemon—this brings before on the whole problem of the attitude of Christianity toward the apostle during the struggle in this country for our freedom—thief was no text that stated plainly that human slavery was contrary to the laws of God. The treatment of slaves during Paul's day was terrible. One slave owner, a slave of the Apostle Paul, was the Arpian Way. A nobleman was murdered by a slave and four hundred slaves, wen, women and children, were executed. The slave owner had complete authority over his made forbidding living chattle. By decree, the year 900 A. D. it was agreed in a synod that a mistress was justified

in beating her slave mated to death. Bishop Moule gives a touching incident. Says he: "One Diedel Pollio, a friend of the emperor, was accustomed to throw his offending slave into the fire, and the emperor was one day entertaining Agustus at table, when the cupboard bearer broke a crystal goblet, and was forwittily sentenced to the same punishment as at his owner's expense, not to be forgiven, but to be punished other way, and Augustus, shocked and angered, ordered the man's encaustication, and had Pollio's crystals all broken. He was then sent to the court, and discarded his friend." This gives one some idea of what an offending slave might expect from a master. Paul would in this letter: change the relationship that once existed between the emperor and slave as was once the case, but brothers in Christ.

First he was begotten in his bonds; second; he was now "Paul the aged"—he was just past sixty but the strenuous life he lived and suffering he had undergone made him a man of great importance and worth to Christ. Then he offered to make good what Onesimus had taken if he desired it.
