The color scheme was further carried out in pink and white ice cream served in addition to cake and fruit punch. Music was furnished by Misses W. B. Patterson of Prairie View and Misses Maggie Johnson, Hazel Davis and Mrs. B. Patterson. The high esteem in which the host and hostess are held by their many friends was attested to by the large number present to wish the happy couple many more years of matrial bliss. COLUMBUS Everyone is looking forward to the grand school closing of the Colored High School May 9th-14th. The faculty is rapidly getting everything in shape for the occasion. Concerts Monday and Wednesday nights. Friday night the graduates will render the closing program. On Saturday night, May 15, the Civic Club will give a grand reception in honor of the graduates. The school has been very fortunate in securing the service of Rev. J. I. Donaldson of Houston to preach the baccalaureate sermon Sunday, May 9, and Rev. M. M. Haynes, editor of the People's Mouthpiece, Austin, to deliver the address to the graduates. Rev. D. D. Cole of Yoakum, Texas, has succeeded Rev. Miller as pastor of the A. M. E. Church. Prof. D. S. Shanks went to Houston Friday and made a contract with the Wilburn Band to furnish music June 18th and 19th. The people of Columbus and vicinity are working to the end that this will be the grandest celebration and homecoming in the history of the town. Y.W.C.A. NOTES. Campaign week was a busy time for the WCC, C.A., and they did all they could in seeing Houston citizens and securing subscriptions for the Yield C.A., but it was impossible to complete the work in the time designated and so the workers are continuing their labors. Mrs. Emma Jackson of this city is very ill, but is recovering nicely now to what she has been. Sorry to state that Cuero needs some better girls here than some we have here now. The ridiculous incident of the Cuero colored high school is bless and pity some of the girls here. Manager Charles C. Mr. Tarver of Breamah, contractor. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, MAY 8, 1920. "LILY-WHITE" REPUBLICAN COUNCIL CONDUCTED HARRIS CO. CONVENTION; WILL OF THE PEOPLE DISREGARDED The "illy-whitees" of Harris County "republican council" had their steam roller in perfect working condition in both the precinct and county conventions, held Saturday and Tuesday, respectively, and they sought to prevent any true and tried republican from being sent as a delegate to the county convention and where they were sent by the voters of the various precincts, only in a few instances were they seated by Nichols and his steam-roller county executive committee. It was the most high-handed political outrage and highway robbery in the history of the republican party in Harris County and such underhand and automatic tactics as employed by the county chairman are calculated to destroy the party in this county. The manipulators of the steam roller knew that the methods they had agreed upon in advance of the convention would not be tolerated by the genuine republicans and had arranged to have nearly every policeman, deputy and plain clothesman on the force present to browbeat, intimidate and manhandle those who objected to Nichols' imperialistic rulings. It was the first time in the history of the republican party in this county that the real republican organization was displaced by an adjunct or auxiliary to the republican party and according to the daily newspapers of Saturday, the precinct conventions were held under the auspices of the "republican council of Harris County." In settling all contests (and where there were no contests Nichols and his gang made them) all contestants were permitted to sit as jurors in their own contests and voted to seat themselves and their delegation. There was not the least semblance of a fair and square deal in the actions of the county executive committee, which was overstocked with disatisfied, discredited and disgruntled democrats, many of whom will vote the democratic state ticket and probably the national democratic ticket. They were simply brought into the conventions of Saturday and Tuesday to defeat the will of the majority of representative republican electors. The day of kaisers has passed and the man who essays to serve in that role is lacking in some of the qualities that go to make up a sane and rational minded individual. When such arbitrary rulings were made by the chairman that all of the colored delegates present, excepting about 20 political bootleaders and scum of the race, withdrew from the convention and organized a real county convention in the rear of the building, which was stopped by the "peace officers" brought there for the specific purpose of raising a "rough house," a death blow was hit "illy-whiteism" and all its kith and kin. Nearly 200 delegates protested at such high-handed and unfair tactics and were elected from the building by the officers, who openly made threats to "get" certain leathers who would not consent to be steam-rollered without voicing a protest. These genuine republicans retired to Trinity M. E. Church and held a bona fide and regular county convention. The statement that the "better class of Negroes" remained in the "illy-white" convention in the Main Street Auditorium Tuesday is an economical employment of veracity, unless defunct booze-houses, ex-conductors of places of vice and political henchmen and hangers-on are the "better element" of the race. In the number of those who were forced to withdraw from the "illy-white" county convention were all the ministers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, professional men and women, business men, laboring men, women—in fact what the race considers and regards as the cream of the race. The fight is on and the principles of republicanism will ultimately triumph. So autocratic, unfair and imperialistic became the ruling of County Chairman Nichols that the real republicans present withdrew from the "illy-white" fiasco and adjourned to Trinity M. E. Church, where the temporary organization was perfected. Before leaving the Main Street Auditorium, C. F. Richardson was elected temporary chairman. At Trinity M. H. Griffin was elected temporary secretary. After a temporary roll of delegates had been prepared by the credentials committee, of which Dr. H. E. Lee was chairman, the temporary roll was made permanent. W. L. McCoy was elected permanent chairman and Rodney D. Hardeway permanent secretary. Resolutions were passed endorsing W. L. Davis of Harris County as delegate from the eighth congressional district to Col, Carnegie Libra the national republican convention; also E. H. R. Green of Kaufman County, Ed McCarthy of Galveston County, Wm. M. McDonald of Tarrant County and J. B. Griggsy of Harris County as four delegates from state-at-large to national republican convention. Stoneham, born and raised in the Bellville colored schools, died there last Thursday of heart failure. We were not it for The Informer and that "Political Watch Dog Cliff" the "lifty" of the Bellville residents wandering on the political prairie, as the children of Israel in the wilderness. The best new educator, financially and politically elevates that race, religiously, educationally, financially and politically, there. The greatest man of a race is the bravest man; the man who is the least man of any race and political squirring. "LILY-WHITES" AGAIN TASTE DEFEAT FROM ROBERT CHURCH (By Special Correspondent.) Memphis, Tenn. May 11—It took twenty years to get the "illy whites" of Memphis and Shelby County, but in the largest district convention of politicians ever held here, with distinguished guests, the regulars, led by Robert R. Church, put it over the fair and precious buds and flowers in fashion perfect. In the tenth district convention, called for the purpose of electing a delegate to the republican national convention on the regulars and the regulars "rise up" and took the weapon from the "ilies" and flayed their hip and thigh. Even the daily papers, notoriously unfair to the leadership of Church, conceded in reporting the pow-wow that Church's army outwitted as well as outvoted the "ilies" and bigger and quicker thinner faculty. Church Elected. Following a warm meeting of the district committee that had been packed against the regulars from the four counties of the district the regular processor so "skept" the meeting place away from the "ilies" and hold a real convention, in which republican gosel, and not postoffices, was the topic of discussion. Campbell the election of Robert R. Church, with Josiah T. Sette as alternate, as delegates to the republican national convention, was carried with as much enthusiasm as unanimity. The tenth district thus notified the republican national convention that the warrior against the "ilies" would be a free convention in a free land. The sight was memorable. When Joe Sette called the convention to order and advised the audience, packed in the county court house like ancient sardines in an ancient box, that the regulars had decided to man the Harrisburg Happenings. Twenty-one legal voters met Saturday at 1 o'clock at the colored school auditorium and elected twelve delegates to the county convention, which met last Tuesday. The following delegates were elected: C. B. Broomfield, R. Simmons, Jas. Mitchell, Bob Roberts, S. Sholars, Chas. Cage, W. Cage, Jr., James Washington, Abraham, James, and James. Mr. Bill Daniel and Mrs. Alzada Chatman returned from Cle-burne Saturday, where they were sent as delegates from the labor union. Mrs. Maud Green left last Tuesday for San Antonio, where she will spend the summer for her health. Miss Fred de Esmond, Mrs. Esmond, Mrs. C. B. Broomfield, her former home. Rev. G. R. Cushingberry was down Sunday. Rev. A. Bess was entertained at a luncheon Sunday evening by Mr. and Mrs. R. Simmons. Mothers' Day will be observed with a fitting program Sunday night at M. E. Church. Mr. George W. W. Smith, Mrs. C. B. Broomfield, his family. Mr. Jerry Thornton was up from Turkey Point Saturday visiting his brother-in-law, Mr. Sam Washington. The Odd Fellows' ser-mon will be preached at Pleasant Hill Sunday. Little Andrew Collier was brought home last Saturday from the infirmary. He is convalescent. Alexis, Mr. Cushingberry, was present at his father. Mrs. Georgia Crosby is back from Galveston. Mrs. Ella Smith left Thursday night for her home in Loulsana. Pleasant Hill S. S. was well attended Sunday. The pastor reviewed the lesson. The Sunday school will have a picnic soon. Trinity M. Cushingberry will be present for the first to bring up her quota in the win one legion plan. One joined church Sunday morning. Five were added to the church through the Sunday school on Decision Day. The Sunday school at Gildfield is alive; $53.15 was raised in the rally conducted by Rev. C. A. Cushingberry. The church was full of ducting a revival. Six have been added to the church. Messrs. Ed. Immediately Church fung his hidden bomb—he nominated Steve Wright, a white republican, for chairman, and when the "illies," peeping over about the outside, saw Wright take the chair, they gave up the ghost. The chairman of the republican state central committee, "Hon. Hal Clements, came down from Knioville to lead the "illies" to victory, and then had nothing to lead, except a handful of weary looking candidates for "favors to come." Jake Wake was elected secretary, and then began to work the most perfect organization colored men have ever perfected. Resolutions Extol Party. The presentations, presented by Dr. J. W. Burton, extolled the party and nailed the plan to declare for whoever the Chicago convention nominates to put Wilson out of his free lodgings and took pride in the fact that the convention made Church to Chicago without either election or vote. By Roddy, Hayes, Wilkerson, Beaton and Sette, Chairman Wright rode through without bit or brillo, "Meanswhile Judge J. B. Worthman, the only white republican in Shelby County holding office by election, was "cusumon" to the "illies" to a fare-you-well face to face. By and by, by the business of the republicans was finished, the "illies" filed in between police to hold a "rump" convention. Church had won his greatest victory, old Menter, Walter L. Cohen, A. W. Fite and his friend, Roscoe Simmons. The program they calmly read and worked from, went through with ease. DE RIDDER DOTS. Star of Bethlehem Church had a splendid Sunday school, after which he attended a strong sermon. Rev. Green opened the door of the church and one was added to the number. Collection for the church was sent to went to Lake Charles to the doctor. Rev. L. Johnson, Mississippi, is a pastor. He acted as superintendent Sunday. We had quite an interesting lesson. The topic was "Looking Into Christ." The third Sunday, Mr. Edelhart, deltier, is leaving for Kansas City May The Odd Fellows and Ruth. They are preparing for a big dinner. Diboll was too tall for the people. Rev. J. W. Harris was the speaker for the occasion, asking their church leaders in connection with them. They rushed in the effort $86.00. They gave a free dinner on the occasion. Sunday, May 14 was pastor's day for the loh missionary Baptist Church. Our pastor, Rev. J. J. Brandford, was called to serve the services. The services and the services in the pastor's stead. The people at Diboll are in favor of the Informer, and hope to add new subscriptions in near future. Mr. M. C. Monk was the spirit of Mrs. L. Wigly Sunday, The First Baptist Church in Smith addition is near completion. The numbers are hard to find. The services are ill Saturday, T. Welch took seriously ill Saturday, but is up again. The Wickedness of Eil and His Sons 2:12,17, 27,36. The sons I (vv. 12,17, 22). The behavior of these sons is in strange contrast to that of the boy Samuel. Eil's sons were priests and ministered in the ancient, but "knew not the lord" (v. 12). (1) Graft (vv. 12-17). This greed was practiced "wielded the worshipers who brought their sacrifices to the altar (Ex. 29:27; Lev. 7:31, 32). The priest God ordained that the priests should have the breasts and shoulders of the animals which were brought to the altar (Ex. 29:27; Lev. 7:31, 32). The priest consented with this, but demanded more, and even sought to obtain it by force (vv. 15). Moreover, they lifted out with a fork certain choice portions of the food. Such behavior on the part of the priests was revolting to the worshipers and resulted in the abhorrence of the Lord's offerings. 2. Eil (vv. 27-38). Eil was seemingly a slave before God in that he failed to discipline his sons (vv. 22-24). He knew of their sins and was conscious of his obligation, but his fatherly heart led him to the Lord. He loved his God but loved the better of his judgment. Eil was content with a weak remonstrance. He was under obligation not merely to speak against it, but should have acted against it. 3. Eil and His Sons Punished (4:1-18) They at last came to reap what they had sown. God has appointed a day of judgment (Acts 17.31). There is a harvest time for the sinner as he is sown. God has appointed if one has sown to the wind he shall reap the whirlwind. The Philistines made war upon Israel and defeated them with great slaughter. This judgment had been made known to Eli by a "man of God" and Samuel by the Philistines and the Philistine struments in the hands of God for this judgment. 1. The battle with the Philistines (vv. 1-9). The Israelites made an unsuccessful attempt to free themselves from the Israelites and some 4,000 were slain. This aroused them to inquire as to why the Lord had smitten them and to suggest that they should fight with as a defense against the enemy. In this they committed two blunders: (1) The elders had no right to handle the ark; that belonged to the priests; and that they should have the mind of God, and if it were his will that the ark be brought, it should have been done by the priests. (2) It was a sword that the priests had in their hand a symbol of God's presence. They ignorantly assumed that the presence of God inhered in the symbol, forgetting that it was a symbol of his will and purpose of his own, and therefore will not give concessions to that which disgraces with his holy purpose and will. Professing Christians in this way would substitute the sacraments of the church for the presence of God in the soul. The earth rung out with a great about when the priest was brought into the temple, and when he bestowed with fear, for the knew what wonders God had wrought in times past. In their desperation they made a stand, culling upon their own best, to win the war they fought and won the victory. 2. Israel's disastrous defeat (vv. 10, 18). (1) The army was routed and a great slaughter occurred (vv. 10, 18). (2) The symbol of the divine presence with its sacred memories torn from their grasp and with it went Israel's hope; (3) Elijah's sword was broken (vv. 10). The very priests were custodians of the ark were stalem; (4) death of Elijah the high priest (vv. 18). THE HOUSTON INFORMER SATURDAY, MAY 8, 1920 Won Congressional Medal of Honor in Apache Campaign. Sent to Washington. The sea was Leonard Wood's first ambition. He wanted to enter the navy, but chances for advancement in the military were poor. He became床硬 in the form of an arctic expedition. He had decided to become an explorer when his father, Dr. Wood, took his son into his study in the University of Oxford, where he won his profession, that of medicine. The result was that Leonard Wood entered the Harvard Medical School in 1850, and graduated with a hard-earned scholarship, he worked his own way through college. He tutored students and picked up other odd jobs to pay expenses. He was bitter. After serving as an interne in one of the Boston hospitals and practicing for several months in one of the poor hospitals, he were poor. He were too poor to pay much, if anything, for medical attendance, young Dr. Wood, with fifty-nine other physicians, took an examination in the class. He was asked if he would accept a position as contract surgeon at $100 per month. If I can go West and be active service, answered Wood. The examining officer smiled and assured Wood that he would see plenty of active service. This proved to be no The summons came in June, 1885. Dr. Wood was ordered to report to duty to General Crook at Fort Hushua on June 14, 1885, against the Apache Indians under Geronimo. Wood arrived at Fort Hushua on the Fourth of July, Soldiers, cowboys, Indians and frontiersmen were celebrating the day with gunpowder and the celebration was assigned to the Fourth Cavaliar, commanded by Captain Henry W. Lawton, who became famous in the Spanish-American War as a Major-General. The latter looked at his visitor and said, "What the hell are you doing here?" "I want to get into the line as soon as possible." He was chuckled and slapped Wood on the back and said: There was a column of Indian fighters, starting off the following morning, and Wood was ordered to go along. He was ordered to a very special horse, sir, he remarked as he handed Wood the retails. The letter mounted and rode off. He so found out that his "special horse" was not a horse, but a mean-tempered. His gait was so vicious that even the veteran troopers shunned it. Wood rode the animal every day, and he threw. He was blistered, for the surm was hot and the "outlaw" was rough, but Wood stayed with the troopers, and, in the language of the army, he was a man of honor. He lasted for fourteen months, leading over thousands of miles of wilderness in New Mexico and Arizona. Wood was one of the few men the went on a mission to kill the pursuit, after a twenty-five mile march, he rode seventy-four miles by night, carrying dispatches through the mountains, and he rode thirty miles with his troops. When Geronimo sent word to the Americans that he was ready to surrender, Wood was one of the four officers who went into the Apache camp to negotiate. This was in old Mexico. The American officers accompanied the Indians for two weeks as they marched in a parallel column with the American troops into United States territory for formal capitulation. At one time during the march the two columns lost contact, and Wood, with his brother officers, was left at the mercy of the Reds. Geronimo, observing Wood's new Hotchkiss rifle, asked to examine it. "I must confess I felt a little nervous," General Wood said in telling the story, "but I made no objections, and let him have the rifle and showed him how to use it." Geronimo fired at a mark and just missed one of his men. This he regarded as a huge joke, rolling on the ground in high glee and saying: "Good gun. Good gun." The Indians tried no treachery and surrendered as they had promised to do. Twelve years later Wood was given the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military reward, "for distinguished service in the campaign against the Apache Indians in 1886 while serving as medical and line officer in Captain Lawton's expedition." Wood spent several years in the Southwest. He was General Miles' chief assistant in surveying Arizona, and used unilateral maneuvers with such devotion that he was soon acknowledged to be a thoroughly competent line officer. Nor did he have the skill to maneuver in General Wood is not a vain man, but he shows a good deal of pride today when he recalls that he succeeded in saving General Miles from having his leg amputated, and fallen with him, crushing the limb. The movement is spreading so rapidly that General Wood's managers are working night and day to keep up with it. Not only are the states in which there are Wood organizations bubbling with enthusiasm over his prospective nomination, but from the native states of favorite sons, who are opposing General Wood, there continue to come the strongest and most sincere assurances that he is the popular choice of a majority of the voters. All the indications are that the people throughout the nation intend commandeering him as their leader in the White House because of his remarkable record as an executive, he marvelous powers as an administrator, abundantly shown in Cuba, the Philippines and during the world war, and because of his frank and fearless stand on the paramount issues of the day. Wood Against Field. "It is a case of Wood against the field," said Congressman Norman J. Gould, eastern manager of General Wood's mending business. He said the mending lead because of the great amount of personal, volunteer work done by his friends and admirers beaten up by the mob in the existence. The support General Wood is receiving from voters all over the country clearly indicates that they will be sufficient to give General Wood the power to him in the convention and that the number of delegates so instructed will be sufficient to give General Wood the power to him in the convention. General Wood will have 800 delegates delegates when the convention opens, and will need only 188 more to get the nomination. He said the convention in New Hampshire, the first state in the Union to hold a primary for the selection of delegates, Congressman W. W. Johnson, will have to sign a pledge in Massachusetts, said a careful canvass of New England showed practically every state in that section would have to sign a pledge to give delegates to the convention pledged to his nomination. Governor Milken of Maine personally assured General Wood that that state was solid for him. Mr. Hitchcock's affiliating himself actively with the Wood campaign has brought strong support from the South for the general. Mr. Hitchcock has a host of friends and admirers in the South and they have been writing him many letters of congratulation on joining Wood and assuring him that the general will have many, if not all, of the Southern delegations in the convention with him. Announcement is made by the Wood managers that they will put up an active fight for delegates in Ohio against Senator Harding and in Illinois against Governor Lowden. William Cooper Procter, national campaign manager for General Wood, has issued an unqualified denial that either General Wood or anyone connected with his candidacy will attempt to unseat Will Hays as chairman of the Republican National Committee after the national convention. This statement is oclival and is made in reply to baseless stories circulated by General Wood's opponents for the obvious purpose of stirring up trouble between the chairman of the Republican National Committee and General Wood. Oh, that we might learn to "stand still" and allow him to fight for us; turning the discouraging and losing battle into a glorious victory for him and the path of deliverance for ourselves! In these days when there seems to be such increase in the power and subtiety of Satan and when there seems such danger of the Christian being drawn back into the world, there is all the more need for us to meditate upon the sufficiency of our God. Added confidence and peace come to us as we think of the relationship we have with our children. Our far off day was his special people so we are today—perhaps closer than Israel was, for we are in a peculiar way for us he fights for his own. His love spurs him on to stand between us and all our enemies. Over and over in the past he has loved us, he loves. He says, "A mother may forget her sucking child, yet will I not forget thee," "I have loved you with an enduring love," "Who has not heard of a mother's love urging her to go on fighting for her own until the limits of human endurance were reached and passed, but I cannot forget her child. It is inconceivable that he should forget one of his own, however few he should be, for the sucking child. What a refuge from danger we have in him. Under his wings there is perfect security and safety. When the hawk approaches the mother hen puts herself between it and her brood. To touch the chickens there must be first the overcoming of the mother hen. The Psalmist sings in his time of danger, "Under his wings will I abide." Oh, my troubled Christian friend, let this word get into your consciousness and rest in its sweetness—the Lord shall fight for you and ye shall hold your peace. Satan is expert in arranging circumstances before the believer which seem almost to force that one back into the world for relief. There appears no more hope of overcoming than appeared to Israel, hemmed in on that road before the Red sea. But the seed did open and Israel did go through dry shod and Pharaoh was overcome and his power broken. Let this encourage and hearten the tried soul of the believer. That circumstance that seems to force you to compromise or yield to the world would be nothing in Jesus' hands. Let him fight for you while you hold your peace. Franklin of Jackson, Miss., a colored minister, who was fined four hundred dollars, and sentenced to five months on the country farm at Tchula, Mississippi, for selling the property under a office of law, and associated and who the lawyer, employed by colored people of Jackson, Miss., the association says, was intimidated by a mob which threatened to lynch him if he attempted to defend the colored minister. The association declares that a local justice of the people of the court is a part of the cost of appeal, declaring that Franklin would be lynched if released, and that his only assurance of protection was for him to work out his sentence. The reply of the acting governor to the association's request for legal protection was the declaration of the office of the city's the Crisis would visit.
