COLORED SUPERVISOR Most Southern cities with large colored populations, and even some Texas cities, have experimented with colored supervisors for colored public schools in the past. They have been judged by the retention of these race supervisors. Houston school system has more colored schools and teachers than any city in Texas and is exceeded by very few other cities. The opinion that the time is ripe for Houston to appoint some colored educator as supervisor of colored schools. In a number of cities the principal of the colored high school is supervisor, especially where he does little work. The school system is more executive and administrative work. With a school system as large and complex as ours, it is hard possible for the white school officials to do justice to the colored schools; not because they are more experienced and maintaining rather than to accord to the colored schools. A colored supervisor could be of vast assistance to the school board and system in this respect and then be an administrator rather because they do not have the time to accord to the colored schools. At present our schools are not "hitting on all six" and may be a colored supervisor would serve as the "spark" for the school system and maintaining a high standard among our colored schools. The system has grown and expanded beyond the conception of the average person and what was the custom years ago is totally inadequate and insufficient in its design and management. The informer suggests that our board of education give the matter of education to the students in the schools of the Houston independent school district some serious study and thought; make investigations on the subject; and make sure that he loves Houston will join the other progressive cities of the South in appointing a colored supervisor over the board. Postmaster Nichols should investigate why a foundation is any foundation to them; for we can not conceive of the idea that a federal postoffice, even though it be called a sub-station, would show clandestine activity in the postage stamps and issuing money orders to citizens and patrons of the government. It such is the policy of the federal postoffice department should do, hand a change in salid policy or locate this sub-station at some other place. Any rate we are going to submit the matter to Postmaster Nichols just now, and knowing him as we do, we are confident that he will prove himself equal to the emergency; a percent of all the people and not a people. Moton, president of the National Negro Business League, announced today that the Honorable T. C. McRae governor of the State of Arkansas, had given the officers of the league a full-time assurance that he would welcome the league to the state at the Wednesday evening session, August 15, of the twenty-fourth annual meeting of the League, which will be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas, August 15, 16, and 17. A special feature of the forthcoming meeting will be a "get-together" meeting of the "Let the Women's Leaders" of the League, many of whom were of the two who assembled in Boston twenty-four years ago in answer to the call of Dr. Booker T. Washington, which resulted in the establishment of the National Negro Business League. The local committee on arrangements headed by John L. Webb, treasurer of the National Negro Business League, is a member of the Union, is making special preparations for the entertainment of this group. THE HOUSTON COLLEGE SITUATION. THE HOUSTON COLLEGE SITUATION. There has been quite a bit of discussion regarding the act of the educational board of the Baptist Missionary and Educ. Convention of Texas in virtually discharging Professor I. M.ell from the presidency of Houston to Colder, peremptorily. Whatever prompted the board to tender the post to Dr. J. Lee, nationally known educator, and fail to re-elect Professor I. M.ell is the board's business; but there is a certain amount of lideration due every man and thus these Baptist leaders' record this common courtesy to Professor Terrell. There is no student that the fact that Professor Terrell did me getting to college on the map, locally, than any and the predecessors; while the financial support accorded the school white citizens, through Professor Terrell's acti reached the highest mark in the history of the college. The Informer recognizes the fact that a school needs some wide money, but when a man spends the most of his time in if finance to keep any institution alive or the cause going, very little time for routine duties. This is the reason why colleges have a institution that is who devote their entire time to the institution's work. It is rather unfortunate for the school and denomination such a rupture came at this time; for it is an admitted fact of the school's history, and the first time it was to be done in the first year of the school. If the Baptist leaders do not want Professor Terrell as his name, he has their business; but the public little interest in that school, too, since it has received quite of public donation and support and these donors, both in an of the denomination, think that any man that has wrought in certain capacities as Professor Terrell at this school has been the most of the school and not "fired"; especially as he has committed no overt act, had neither squandered no appropriated any of the funds of the school, nor seduced the girls as one of his ministerial predecessors did. For several decades, even while principal of the Ft. Worthy High School, he has been the principal of the driving his caled and means to the denomination; and at the local in relation to learning he has unstinted in his efforts to make great school. That he was succeeding the remaining lines is evidenced his friends he was of the same part as the school. We have a record of the college before the Terrell administration. If the Baptist leaders do not want Professor Terrell as head of Hewlett-Packard that was their business; but the public has a little interest in that school, too, it since it has received quite a bit of public donation and support and these donors, both in and out of the denomination, think that any man that has wrought as well in certain capacities as Professor Terrell has at this school, should at least be given a man's chance and not "fired"; especially since he has been given the opportunity to be appropriated any of the funds of the school, nor seduced any of the girls as one of his ministerial predecessors did. For several decades, even while principal of the Ft. Worth Colored High School, this distinguished educator was giving his time, talent and means to the denomination; and at the local institution of learning he has been unstinted in his efforts to make it a That he was succeeding along certain lines is evidenced by the friends he was making and retaining for the school, many of whom had never heard of the college before the Terrell administration. He was a teacher at the college, and he was instructing for their action in demanding new blood at Houston College, but there is not a preacher on board that would relish of his church asking him for his resignation, effective immediate. Then why treat another as they would not like to be treated themselves? Where is the Golden Rule they preach so much and practice so little? Just such action as these reveal the true character and real heart of our so-called religious leaders, many of whom would do far better plowing corn or picking cotton than to preach Christ. We presume Doctor Lee reasoned that, if they would treat one person they would treat another similarly, and presumably he was unwilling to be employed as a tool for the denomination to attain a given end and then show him the gate. He certainly used rare judgment in declining the proffered position. Who'll be the next victim? Selah! There was nothing particularly strange about this race woman's singing, neither the words of the song new to our ears; but what struck us was the insinatory and unsightly condition of the premises and her apparent satisfaction or indifference to her physical surroundings. If she had not been singing, "I'll be satisfied then," we would have insisted on the many weeds and other debris about the place and the fact that this condition has obtained virtually all summer, she undoubtedly was very much satisfied now! Our people are too satisfied with the insanity, unhealthy and unsightly condition of their premises and vastly too many permit their places to be eaten up with weeds and grass; yet many of us love the front porches and sing songs of joy, faith, adoration, hope, regeneration, sanctification, and triumph. No person that is nasty, filthy and dirty here below can ever hope to reside in the home above; for if heaven is such a place as we are, and as portrayed by Saint John in his apocalyptic writings, the house should be the house housekeepers, who can so唱 so loud and so sing long and strong, are in for some keen disappointment in that final day. If cleanliness is next to Godliness, then many of our people are in for a rude shock; for they will never even peep inside the pearly gate of the house. We visit to a store of the necessary sections and it will shock all your sense of decency when you waterwatermelon rinds, banana peels, cans, bottles, rags, paper, litter, debris and all kinds of junk scattered not only over yards of so many of our houses and homes in the ditches and streets in front of their houses and homes. The city should enforce the ordinance against throwing such junk and filth in the streets and if there is no law on the municipal statute books covering such an offense, the city council should provide a penalty for those who violate the sanitary conditions in colored residential districts are bad enough at their best and for our own people to make and maintain these conditions worse, is a reflection upon our civic pride and decency and a crying crime unto high heaven! The city should enforce the ordinance and the menace to public health of trash, filth and weeds on the premises, and here some of our ministers can render a signal service to the social family. A city with as large colored population as Houston should really have a physician connected with the municipal health department, working out of a medical office in the department, devoting his time and attention to our people, their living conditions, environments, physical shape of their premises as they relate to and affect the health of the general community. Such a departure and appointment would be in keeping with governmental out of office measures in the proper direction and would serve as a preventive rather than a curative measure. The colored race is no longer wholly and solely isolated from the other races of any city, North or South; and, while segregation is not a moral or legal or earthly way has been discovered or unmanned yet that can make diseases and epidemics any responder of persons or races. If, because of filth and insanitary conditions, an epidemic originates in the colored district of a community, it is just a matter of hours before it has reached the homes of other races, especially those in various capacities around their homes and places of business. You may isolate people and races, but you can not isolate diseases and epidemics; and medical science is repeatedly demonstrating that there is much for our people to do in keeping their premises clean, healthy and sanitary, by the use of a little elbow grease, lime and other disinfectants; while the city has a distinct duty to perform its colored cityism in this respect by lending aid and care to the elderly and the disabled. Only by co-operation between the colored citizenry and city fathers can the conditions in colored residential districts be improved and kept habitable, decent and sanitary. People take more pride in their homes, whether they own them or rent them, than they can only prevail and obtain where cleanliness has held sway. We do not object to you singing that song, sister, but we also suggest that, awaiting the day of your "satisfaction," you have the opportunity to be pampered up. The prevailing opinion with the man of science is that light is, that the summer term is entirely too short, and only a dozen weeks light, is that the student body from rettoning for an extension of time, prevents the student body from understanding here would conclude that the intense interest on the part of the man of science in the weeks of the term had decreased manpower, with longing eyes toward August 2nd, but to the contrary, the interest in the man of science has been coming of each new week.
