New Orleans, La—The federal courts will so question as to the disfranchisement of Negroes whereby thousands of tax payers are deprived of the chise solely on account of their color. It has been throughout the entire South that Negroes have a right to hold office in the gift of the people, and been denied the right to register or vote, though a poll taxes from all who will pay.
The late President Harding appointed Walter to the important position as controller of the leans over several white opponents, recognizing as a representative of his race. Washington, D. C.—The newspapers of the country performed a distinct service for colored America in presenting to the people full information about the attitude of C. Bascom Slemp, a secretary to the president by Mr. Coolidge. There is every reason to believe that the president was not aware of the feeling of the group with reference to the secretary; there is every reason to believe that the president is now fully informed in every particular. The White House received a "storm warning" immediately following the appointment. A number of persons aware of the slant of thought on the subject hastened to say that from one end of the country to the other clouds of regret, dismay and even disgust would fly over the District of Columbia. The prophecy was not exaggerated in the least.
Assurances of a fair deal and a successful White House, and from friends of the administration. One of the first acts of the new secretary was to issue a statement informing the country of the distinguished bill. "That we are clever play, and show who's beaon beaon," said one old-timer.
The president then began to see prominent citizens, both men and women, lightens assurances. In fact, the distinguished bill addressed at the indignation broadcast and has personally informed a number of people that they are square deal. "The only thing wrong with the idea of a square deal." The only thing wrong with the idea of a square deal and our may not mean the same.
The president then began to stop the funeral being made against him. He is courteously petitioning to the president. "Slemp is all things to all men," continued the philosopher, and to be able to do what he may do and say when we are out of sight. That he is in a position of authority, much is much that he might prevent from going behind the president that would our desire be.
FORMER HOUSTON VICAR UNWONUSAL HONOR
The friends of Rev. John W. Freeman, formerly of St. Clermont Episcopal Church of Houston, will be glad to learn of the continued success of Father Freeman, who is now located in Washington, D. C. At the recent funeral of former President Paul E. Peters in Pittsburgh, Pa., Father Freeman was distinguished by the distinguished bill addressed at the indignation broadcast and has personally informed a number of people that they are square deal. Nevertheless, there are those who have dared recently to publicly come to the defense of the new secretary to the president, and are asking for him, as they are asking for the president. It is a bold stroke in the face of the anti-jobbing bill and "illy-wahter" record, but the stroke has been made and onward flows the Potomac, onward to the ocean.

FORMER HOUSTON VICAR
WON UNUSUAL HONOR
The friends of Rev. John W. Freeman, formerly vicar of St. Clement's Episcopal Church of Houston, will be glad to learn of the continued success of the Rev. John W. Freeman in Washington, D. C. At the recent Pittsburgh event, he presented at Pittburgh, Pa. Father Freeman a paper on "The Preaching of the Gospel and Church Extension," which he presented at the conventation. This is a genuine achievement, for this conventation is a place of scholars of the church, and some of the race.

Chicago, Ill.—When the republican and democratic parties decided to throw full tickets into the judicial election this fall it opened the way for the nomination of a colored candidate to sit upon the superior bench of Cook County and Edward H. Morris, well known and able lawyer, was selected. For years one of the hopes of the colored electorate of Chicago has been to place a man upon the judicial bench. Judges are nominated by the central committee which has named candidates on several occasions who have always gone down in defeat. The opportunity to make the fight again came through the clever manipulation of colored political leaders and Edward H. Wright, committeeman and "boss" of the Second Ward, is being given the lion's share of the credit.
The democrats and republicans had a fusion or coalition ticket all but agreed upon. At the last moment they split and both parties held conventions composed of committeemen from the various wards and districts to select states. Edward H. Wright was the only colored man in the convention, but he is recognized as a power and when the Second Ward was called on to express its sentiment and present its choice, he arose and asked the convention to hear a committee of colored citizens who had come to press the claim of the group to a place on the judicial ticket.
Alderman Louis B. Anderson was the spokesman and in an effective and clever talk he presented to the assembly the advantage to the party of recognition of "the brewers," calling their attention not only to the solid phalanx of 25,000 voters in the Second Ward, but the city-wide support which would be brought to the G. O. P. as a result. Others on the committee were Attorneyin Violet Anderson, A. E. Patterson, I. B. Turner and O. D. Priest, who spoke.
The convention was impressed and named Mr. Morris as one of the 20 candidates for the superior court bench. The position pays $15,000 a year. Mr. Morris, who is national grand master of the Fellows, is married and rated as one of Chicago's wealthiest citizens. All factions agree that his ability is unquestioned, that he has the judicial temperament, and that if elected he will reflect credit upon the court.

“NEGRO TRADE WEEK” OCTOBER 15-20.
‘The Houston Colored Commercial Club will sponsor a “Trade
With Negro Week,” beginning Sunday, October 14, and ending Sat-
urday night, October 20.
"The week, ax planned, calls for addresses in the various colored
churches on Sunday, October 14, by members of the local organi-
zation, with the pastors and ministers stressing the importance
of our people patronizing the business and professional men of
the ity.
Beginning Monday and ending Saturday night, every colored
person in the city is asked to purchase some article from some
colored business man, and thereby aid in building up and develap-
ing our own enterprises and basiness concern.
‘Local merchants and business men of color are asked to co-
operate with the Colored Commercial Club in making this week
a bowling auceess, bath by advertising their wares and putting
on some special indueements to encourage and stimulate our peo-
ple in buying something from these race business men during
Negro Trade Week. :
‘The club is sponsoring this week with the express purpose and
object of educating our people up to the (mportance and neces-
sty of trading with our own people whenever and wherever prac-
tjeable and it is hoped that our people wil join hands and help put
over the week in grand style.
