FIVE YEARS ON JOURNALISTIC SEAS PEOPLE'S PAPER VOL. VI. "STAY WOKE." ARE WE INTERESTED? On Tuesday, June 10, 1924, the voters will either approve or defuse the proposed amendments amounting to about $1,500,000 and another for school purposes totaling $1,000,000. We wonder if the colored voters of Houston and the Independent School District interested in these bond issues? We wonder if they will take any action against them and thereby endorser at least secure some pre-election promises, even if they are broken as soon as the election occurs to come to organizing and working for their own interests and welfare, and thereby endorser at least secure consideration from those in authority. Those of our race who should take action against them generally the ones given most to lethargy, indifference and sheer stupidity, and thus make易知 regarding the expenditure of such bond issues, and usually so-called "big Negroes" who are always too busy on election day to even go to ballot boxes and caucuses. As long as the colored people of Houston manifest such little interest in the proposed amendments so long will they present their fate when it comes to civic improvement in authority what consideration will be given our people out of these two forthcoming elections so far in to do this, we should go off somewhere and hide. Friends, are we interested? C. C. C. GLIMAX GAME MAY 22. The postponed game between the two candidates in the mutual civil teams will be played at Scott Street Park Friday (loday). May be interested at 4:15 p.m. Free gates will open. The Houston Informer BRYANT VICTOR ANTI-LYNCH BILL IN A.M.E.FIGHT CAUSED HOT TILT EXPOSED GRAFT AT M. E. (Sirned) A WELL WISHER. the uncompromising position of this paper against the evils andills of our day and generation. The Informer has not prostituted its editorial columns with personal calumny, nor has it inudged in mudsliding and silly filth. Instead of playing up and ever parading to the world the personal misconduct and misbehavior of individual members of our race and other races, this paper has always assumed the higher ground of attacking and condemning the practices, endeavoring to make such as constructive criticism. The newspapers are silent on the peculiar evils of the day. The Informer has out in no uncertain tone against these modern sins and "same" and many that originally excoriated, condemned, criticised and anathematized this paper for its attitude in those days, have lived to see the day arrive when they are now found in the same band wagon with The Informer—with this exception, the Informer has never opposed its opposition meant boycott, intimidation, dues and almost complete isolation, while the later day opponents of these practices only assumed their attitude when it became apparent that their revenue would be increased by pursuing such a course. The Informer has never taken any middle ground when the rights of the people (and particularly our own race) were at stake or in jeopardy. During the brief space of five years the Informer has won many notable battles, and yet during this period no one has ever had a real victory in this paper stood on any issue. As a tax popul (voice of the people) always pays a wide and large circulation and ranks with the leading papers of the country in volume of local and foreign advertising; leading virtually all race journals in Texas and the Southwest in the latter respect. Today The Informer stands second among the papers of Texas in circulation, being exceeded only by the Dallas Express, which Reduce Prison Sentences Of Every Houston Riot Black Soldiers, Serving Time At Federal Prison, Eligible For Clemency (By N. A. A. C. --- --- was a full-grown newspaper when the editor of The Informer was wrapped in swaddling clothes. During the past five years The Informer has always sought to publish only reliable and worthwhile news, endeavoring at all times to give our readers not only a well edited publication, but a paper that stands up mechanically with the best in the country, regardless of race. The tone and calibre of this paper's editorsial can be attested by the fact that no colored newspaper in the South (if, indeed, in America) has been quoted in other newspapers as much as the Federal national publicist says that of the five papers that are favorites in the United States in America. The Informer is included among any five that these editors personally read each week. This is a record that not only we (editorially speaking) should not publish but every member of the colored race should take unrealistic and unrealistic measures of one of their own publications, and should support such paper both morally and financially, to the end that ere long the paper can possess its own facilities and, along with publishing its own newspaper, do work for others and give employment, printing and journaling. The Informer, upon the occasion of its fifth birthday, takes this occasion to express its profound gratitude and deepest appreciation to the thousands of readers and numbers of advertisers, who have helped to make this journey and record possible; and, with your continued assistance and good will, we hope to continue to provide our readers with the hope, aims, ambitions, achievements and aspirations of the colored race, and to contend with every vestige of manhood at our command for the speedy advent of the era when genuine democracy and true Americanism will cover and compass the entire common wealth as the waters that cover the deep, Selah! Golfers get greater pleasure when they hit a shot than they do from any other shot of the game—therefore, we need to use a more sure? However, I doubt if a ball a little larger and a little lighter will make so much difference in the 'duffer' will be benefited. The bigger ball will give a larger impact and sit up higher on the ground." BASEBALL CHANGED SINCE OLDEN DAYS Frank Leroy Chance, who was compelled to give up the management of the team, was forced to deal with ill health, remanded before leaving for the West that baseball had changed greatly since the days of the great Giants. He was a champion for pennants and two world championships. And he spoke a moutain to Chance was in a position to note the vast change because of the fact that he was away from the game for the first time, and that everybody figure would be his swan song in the summer with the team. He returned to manage the Red Sox in 1925 he was a total stranger to the team, and pitching went into a decline and hitting became the national pastime. The difference upon his return a year ago was in the matter of playing for runs. When he was playing, he was not prince it usually was a case of getting a one-run lead and holding it. It took real pitches to do that, but As the game is played today one run means nothing. A blonde hone runs through the game and sets a game in the twinkling of an eye. The five ball and the face that holds the ball are most continually with new balls are responsible for this. The result has been high scores, and the sacrifice of the opponent is potent factors in the days of one-run batting, but none falls into disarray. Another chance *Canceled* noticed about the game of the present against that of the past was the change in the attack. The game is now a hard-boiled challenge with them with the iron fat. Canceled naturally would notice this. In his natural disposition we now form a hard-boiled challenge. When *Canceled* and *fines* are spoken in the same breath the name of the opponent is memory. Heisle was a persistent of fender, and Chance was forced to take hundreds of dollars away from him, and then down. Fines didn't bother Heisle was one of those rare players who didn't care about money. **Shocker Going Good** Photograph of Urban Shocker, the famous pitcher of the St. Louis Browns, who is expected to have one of the best years of his career this season. With a likely ball still in use, few ball games are going to be decided by a one-run marin. Stealing second base is a one-on-one. The pitching in both major leagues must get much tighter before base running becomes a big factor in deciding ball games." Sport Notes Fencing has been added to the list of sports for men at the University of California. . . . Lalie Firpo, South American heavyweight, plans to enter the auto racing field soon. Jack Dempsey has received $12,250,000 during the last five years for 39 rounds of fighting. Football players are to wear rubber suits. In that to mean time out while he is vulcanized? H. W. Cornstyn of Buffalo, N. X., will captain the Williams College varsity golf team this season. Center college, with an enrollment of only about 400 students, played football before more than 100,000 fans last fall. George E. Painter of Pittsburgh, Pa., has spent forty-four years of active competition in the trapshooting sport. The highest price ever paid for a火箭队 was $240,000 for Botafogu, an Argentine throughout, five years ago. DIAMOND PICK-UPS Umpires' troubles have begun in earnest. Called stitches were first introduced in baseball in 1885. Pitcher Earl Willett appears to be the ace of the Detroit pitching staff. The Cincinnati "Red Stockings" was the first professional baseball club in the United States. Jack Bentley, former Baltimore southside, is expected to be one of Gland's star players this season. Pitcher John Wilson has been farmed out to the Ray City Michigan-Ontario team by the White Sox. Brownie Shorter Ray French was obtained by the White Sox from Brooklyn. He was called when were asked. Lee Dixon, catcher with Indianapolis of the American association, has been called by St. Paul of the same league. The Boston catcher has sent Carl John Dongnep and Pitcher Harry Filler to the Waterbury club of the Eastern league. Kenneth Hogan, recruit outlider, has been earned from the Cleveland club to the Hamilton club of the Michigan-ohio team. Peter Palmer, the millionaire president of Chicago's first professional baseball club, which was organized in 1889. Joe McGinnity, known as the "Iron Man" of the diamond, pitched more than 1,000 games during his 30 years of service in professional baseball. To insure good behavior, Babe Ruth's contract with the New York Giants shall be held out on him until the end of the season. Babe Ruth was presented with 100 week-old chicks after the opening game in Boston. The Bambine has somewhat of a farm at Suburb, Mass., and is a chicken farm. John McGraw, like all other managers, admits that pitching his problems were due to it but the Giants if his team gets even fair support from the twisting staff. Tt may be that some members ofthe Will cabinet could be dis- pensed gith without affecting the order, and it may be that some Ur'the charges that are being made against some of them are true, neither of which is for The Informer to aay jurt here: but Shaiever fight is in the offing or contemplated, the proponents Thould not engage in wilful and libelous migrepresentations and lrvulate the most viious type of propaganda, merely to destroy nd oust # rand lodge officer that aid not consult them when fetting the contrat for the erection of his home.
