SHERIFF SLEPT WITH RIOT GUN ACROSS HIS LAP Bids Defiance to Threatening Mob: "Will Tolerate No Foolishness." He Says. Athkison, Kan—Declaring that he would resist to the utmost need to inflict mob violence on Melvin Bayle, alleged murderer, Sheriff Ben Fedderson defied would-be lynchers to storm the county jail where Bayle is confined. In substantiation of his assault in front of the prisoner's door, with a riot gun in his hand. In response to menacing telephone calls and threats of violence, the sheriff said: "The law says prisoners entrusted to my custody are entitled to protection and I will protect the Negro to him, my ability. Personally I think he should be due by process of law and not by an angry mob of irresponsible citizens. Any man who will engage in mob violence is not a law-abiding citizen and he will obtain no consideration from me, as am not going to tolerate the slightest foolishness. If a mob comes to the jail and attempts to storm it I will shoot to kill and the chances are that there will be 15 or 20 persons wiped out before they get to me. "It would be an overlapping disgrace to the good品读 of this community if there be mob violence or any attempt at mob violence. Most of the community there isn't controlled by mob rule. Why should a Negro be lynchied just because he is a Negro? If a white man had committed a atrocious crime there wouldn't be any talk of it. I took an oath to enforce the law. Negroes are entitled to fair play and I intend they shall get in my office." and were joined in Marshall by Prof. H. MIMS, Calvert, who has held the office of district grand director in the Grand Unite1 Order of Odd Fellows of Texas for the last several years, has been appointed deputy grand master to succeed Prof. G. W. Jackson of Corcissans, who automatically became grand master of the order with the passing of the late Grand Master H. H. Goree. Prof. Mims is a veteran in the order, and has been connected with the official family over a long stretch of years. Prof. Virgil G. Goree, of the late grand master, was appointed district grand director of the grand Master. South's Greatest Weekly Newspaper GOREE BURIED IN ATLANTA SUNDAY GOREE BURIED IN ATLANTA SUNDAY Texarkana, Texas, Sept. 21. The entire community paid its last tribute of respect to the late Harrison G. Gore, for more than a decade grand master of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows of Texas, at the Oak Street Baptist Church, Rev. H. M. Edwards, pastor, last Saturday and Monday, and moved from the home on Stevens street to the church, where it lay in state and was viewed by thousands. Sunday morning the funeral service was held and hours before the arrival of the family and grand lodge officials, the church, perhaps the largest in the city, was packed and jammed, and hundreds stood on the outside unable to gain an entrance, except when permitted to pass the life and see the body. This was a source of inspiration to hundreds in this section of the state. Simple was the service and simple was his life. Pastor Edwards read the scriptures and prayer was pronounced by Rev. A. C. Capo. Resolutions were read by James T. Newing from the grand lodge, by Mrs. Julia Culla well-Fraiser for the Household of the Church, by Mrs. Linda Lodge, while A. S. Link, white attorney and former superintendent of Cass County schools when Mr. Gore taught at Atlanta, delivered a wonderful eulogy, stating that "Gore was not false to anybody or anything, but was true to everybody and everything," adding that not only had the family, order and race lost on the day of his death, but a social family had suffered an irreparable loss. Prof. B. A. Jackson, son of Grand Master G. W. Jackson and principal of one of the schools in Texarkana, Texas, read a large number of telegrams, letters and messages of condemnation from all sections of the state. Brief encounters were delivered as follows: "As Fraternal Leader," Prof. T. W. Pratt of Dallas; "As a Co-worker, J. H. Riddle of Houston Denison; As a Private Citizen," Prof. W. T. Daniels of Texarkana; "As a Church Layman, as Weatherford of Texarkana; as a Church Minister, as Dr. David A. Brunel, Jr. of Houston." The funeral oration by Rev. M. B. Biblrow of Dallas, himself a close friend to the decedent and family, was a beautiful, timely, but brief, tribute. The minister in his absence minister and desired an education to better equip himself for his life's work, the minister in his absence contributing any financial assistance to the then young man, and Mr. Gore, then president of the district, secured his (Biblrow's) matriculation in Bishop College and then went over the district and raised funds for the school and pursue his studies. As a lasting friendship grew up between them which lasted throughout the years. Appropriate music was rendered for the occasion by the Oak Street Church Club. Mrs. M. L. Jamison, directress. Burial in Atlanta. At the conclusion of the service in this city, the funeral procession imbedded the body in the home of the decedent, where another service was held at his original church. The funeral procession of the Roskanka church, attended by a crowd of nortrowing friends equally large and as heavy of heart as the Atlanta, the remains being deposited in the family plot beside the body of Atlanta, the remains being deposited in the family plot beside the body of Pressley, who passed away in 1906. The commissioner is acts a "personal" observation that faces, the thinking colored people worhoods." Detroit, Mich.-Let's talk about Detroit. The limelight of public interest is focused on this "City of the Straits," "Fourth City," "Motor City," "Auto City," "Ford City," or any other of many names by which it is designated in words and print, here, there, and everywhere. A doctor purchases a home in a "white neighborhood," whatever that may mean—crowds gather around it daily; one specific night there is a fusillade of shots, one white man is killed, a second seriously wounded, the doctor, his wife, and nine others, colored, arrested and charged with first degree murder; not a single white arrested. Mayor John Smith, native of Detroit, seeking re-election this fall, joined the following State Assembly to the commissioner of police, declaring that he is protected, under the constitution of the United States, the state of Michigan, and the charter of Detroit. The commissioner is held responsible. The mayor injects a "personal" observation that he hopes, under the circumstances, the thinking people will not move into "white neighborhoods." He charges that there is a conspiracy of agitation to defect him; and the organization has hired Negroes to work for his opponent, and foment trouble. The organization has hired hours at the office, less than one hour at the office, where the least important results of the outragation. There were fourteen southern state societies organized here in the city to present his proof of Negro employment. But, later, it state that the organization is out to beat the mayor at any cost. Mayor a Real Politician. Mayor Smith is a real politician. He may form a committee to work with the Thompson type in Chicago. He knows how to "play for position." He has appointed more colored citizens to the city's police force, one-than any other mayor in the history of the city. The daily newspapers of Detroit, all of them, come out enduring the mayor's arrest on law enforcement, that there must not He charges that there is a conspiracy of agitation to defeat him; and he claims that the organization has hired Negroes to work for his opponent, and foment trouble. He also claims that the appearances—even less: time—there are placed in mail boxes all over DoD—an anonymous letter practically calling him to present his proof of Negro employment. But, later, it does state that the him is out to beat the mayor at work. Mayor a Real Politician. Twenty years ago there were not 10,000 Negroes in Detroit. Today there are more than 10,000 employed in the automobile industries. It is a serious economic matter, with the employers, and they are deeply concerned. They are the largest and good name of the city of Detroit. Practically, all of the automobile industries employ Negro help. The Henry Ford interests buy the largest, the highest wage; Ford employs almost 14,000 here in Detroit, with a minimum wage of six dollars per hour. At Boston the other day the lowly Red Hose put quite a few of the other players on hand by handing Colleen队 a double defeat. A few afternoons later the Brooklyn caught the fasting Cary Reds in a some-what unhappy dress and slipped up ene up. Both of the two-ply whiplings were unlocked for. But it above all seemed to be a game granted in baseball, as some wise chap once remarked. Under the able coaching of "E. D. He performed well in the Coliseum and Coliseum again, so bodily in practice a couple of days later that he was unable to play for the rest of the season. He played again and immediately won a regular place at guard. Playing throughout the season, he performed in great style, and he progressed so rapidly that the coaches expect him to be one of the greatest guards in the Blast during the coming season. Sport Notes Chicago recently enjoyed soccer football at night. Miss Joyce Wethered, English girl expert, may take up tennis. Susanne Lenglen, the French tennis marvel, won her first big open event at the age of fourteen. California, a city of 75,000, boasts of seven golf clubs within its boundaries, all with large memberships. Mr. Dempsey must fight again, to all appearances, because he has seen lost some of his cleanest dues at ducking. Famous distance runners will compete in the Portchester (X, X) marathon, to be held Columbus day, October 12. George Chaney, the Baltimore southwest, is one of the oldest bases in point of service. He is thirty-two years old. George Wilson, University of Washington halfback, has just recovered from pneumonia, contracted while working on an injury. Members of the Santa Barbara chuk club recently engaged in a defended victory with the powerful weapon of bow and arrow. The University of Pittsburgh will formally dig its new stadium on October 24, with Carnegie Tech football eleven as an opponent. "Matt Bullock has been trained of University of Illinois football teams for the last eleven years. He has just seen how embodied his views on training. But all of these papers and the police officers failed to tall the truth in and'about the matter, according: to. who stated that the officers, in arresting the race {orho was not ‘8 vagratit as reported in the daily press) beat and kicked her un- ‘mereifully, until some colored man remonstrated grith the officers {or the employment of such violenee, which deedsioned his arrest. ‘As for the crowd, every arrest on San Felipe or any other street in Houston is the oceasion or signal for a large erowd to gather instanter. 4 ‘A few days later another Jocal police officer shot a fleeing pris- loner, the race man (who was deaf ahd dumb) dying from the wourids; the officer justifying his act by claiming that the eol- ‘ored mute drew back a rock to hurl at him. This officer, according to his version in the dally newspapers, stated that when the colored man drew back the rock, he shot at him, and then when the race man began to run from the officer, the peace officer shot at the fleeing man until he fell mortally ‘wounded. Despite the fact that the colored man only had a rock (which| he never threw at the officer), while the officer had his trusted sat in his hand, the officer and'white newspapers contend that he shot the Negro because the latter was resisting arrest and threat- ening the officer’ life. ; Even granting that the missile would have injured the officer, had same been hurled by the black man and landed a solid blow ‘upon the minion (7) of the law, did not the danger of any violence tapon said officer sease when the colored man turned his back to the officer and began to rum from him? Te the Negro mute was adh vielous and harold character thatthe peace (1) officer was afraid to tackle him without the employment of force, why did not this police officer deputize some passing miotorist (the shooting occurred on n paved highway lead- ‘ng out of Houston) to assist him in arresting this man? ‘A poligg officer has no more right to shoot « fleeing man than 4 citizen has, particularly when the man had done no more than {his unfortunate colored mute had done. He was suspect, had been previously arrested, itis alleged, had made his escape, and was resting beneath a box ear when the officer approached him, Here is a man slain in cold blood and the fact that a police of- ficer committed the aet, does not mitigate the elreumstances one whit, but rather aguravates and intensifies the stuation; for no Peace officer hax a right to use force and violence upon a prisoner unless said officer's life is in immediate jeopardy, and then he is only to employ only such force as necessary to remove the danger of physieal violence to himself at the hands of the arrested party. ‘The police officers of Houston are entirely too quiek on the trig- ger and employ too much unnecessary and unwarranted force in arresting prisoners, especially members of the colored race. ‘The Informer was hopeful onee that the present superintendent of police was going to put an end to or minimize such brutalities and employment of physical violence among the men on Houston's police force; but it seems that certain influences have been exerted and brought to bear since the C. N. Love incident at the local police station and we hear no more about turning in the badge when an officer strikes « prisoner, or eve & suspension or repF- 1f this condition continues uninterrupted and-unchecked, it ia as sate to lend to serious consequences as water is to flow down the If the mayor, city commissioners, eivil service commission. and chiet of police will not act to stop seh stunts, then itis time for the grand jury of Harrs County to atep in and puta stop to uch outrages and miscarriages of justice, if it necessitates the reor- || ganization of ‘he entire popiee department; for a “stitch in time | will save nine.” + .
