DARROW TO DEMAND SEPARATE TRIALS IN SWEET MURDER CASE Detroit, Mich.—Separate trial for each of the eleven defendants in the Sweet murder case will be demanded by the defense, Clarence Darrow, chief of counsel told Judge Frank Murphy, Friday, after a hearing. The jury was released at 1:30 P. M., after having deliberated for 46 hours without reaching a verdict. It was learned that seven of the jurors favored acquittal for all of the defendants, while five fought to the end for the conviction, Clarence Darrow, Henry Sweet and Leonard Morse, on a charge of malaniphan. Immediately following the dismissal, Clarence Darrow, chief counsel for the defense, moved for a new trial and asked that bail be fixed for the defendants, who have been held in jail since their arrest on the night of September 9th. The motion was argued at the trial, and the judge suggested the first week in January, while bond of $5,000 each, with one surety, was allowed in the case of all the defendants, except the three, whom the five jurors are said to have favored convincing. BAIL SOUGHT FOR ALL Prosecuting Attorney Robert M. Toms definitely fixed the degree of difference in the status of the defendants, which he urged to be considered in the case, suggested the bail in the case of the others be fixed at $10,000. Darrow and Arthur Garfield Hays, assistant defense counsel, both argued that the sum was excessive, and that bail should be allowed all their clients. Darrow and Garfield had not sufficient time to consider the question of bail, and urged that the court grant bail three days to "think the matter over" as affecting the three principles. Over the protest of Darrow and Hays, who declared they wished to go away feeling that they had done everything possible for their clients, the court said he would hold the three men without bail until Monday, when he would hear arguments concerning their release. On the constitutional committee three distinguished Texas educators played the most important part, viz: Prof. A. E. In reading and interpreting the new document Mr. Rice showed that he was well versed with every provision and proposition in the new constitution, which has for its ultimate purpose the creation and maintenance of the association as a real potent factor in the development and progress of the entire colored teaching force in Texas. BEAR MEAT- (Continued from Page One) The association had outlived and outgrown its old constitution, which placed certain limitations and barriers upon the functions and activities of the organization, and hampered and handicapped the organization's ability to respond to revolutionized the associational program and policy. The new constitution combines the offices of secretary and treasurer and creates the office of executive secretary; the latter being the real functioning head of the association ad interim. The constitution sought to make this officer appointive by the executive committee and after much debate and opposition to this feature of the measure (many holding to the opinion that the executive secretary should be elected annually by the body), the constitutional committee was upheld by majority vote of the association. Other safeguards are thrown into the election, so that every person aspiring for office will have a fair chance in the annual shuffle and scuffle. The measure seeks to render it possible for the association to really embark into the educational work and inaugurate a pro-education movement of the members of the association, the colored teachers and pupils of Texas. At least 100 people have been very damaging evidence against some of the highway contractors and the highway commission, which has been given the responsibility for on the part of two contracting firms to reimburse the state to the time of several hundred thousand dollars. The state has also been on the part of a special session of the state legislature, for the purpose of the contracting contracts by the highway commission.
