At the recent grand lodge of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth, held in Houston, Prof. G. W. Jackson of Corseana, district grand master, who automatically became the titular head of the Tory�ion order, showed the death of H. G. Goree last September, thoroughly demonstrated the fact that he is no novice as a presiding officer, and many who came to the grand session with doubt as to his ability along this and other lines, left the city with all such power. We do not mean by this that Prof. Jackson was a marvel and sensation; that he soared to realms never before attained by any past grand master of the Odd Fellows, but we merely mean to pay tribute where tribute is due, and to compliment the manner in which he is called upon to deliver the good of the order during the Houston convention. There were a few trying and tick-lah situations precipitated during the recent grand lodge here, and a man who did not know his ropes, would have found himself how many of the old fowls that would have ultimately dashed the fraternal ship upon the rocks; but, like the veteran pilot of the ship, who has weathered many storms and escaped with no impairment of his vessel nor of his own, he was a man who was not one of the same educator steered clear of all sandbars, submerged rocks and visible and invisible forces of obstruction and destruction, and piloted his barque safely into port. It is no small task to preside over a group of people with divergent views, and to be more than a group of people with divergent views and ambitions; and the task is made harder when the one essaying the role of leadership is the immediate successor to one who formerly occupied said office for a long number of years, and whose name was almost synonymous with the word "lead." The law of 1900 American citizens in this city and county to all supply by and permit a small group of scheming and designing politicians to rob them of every vestage of political and human right, will ultimately be a result of the law of the state and the law of the state; and we shall be in a worse plight than the Russian serfs during the darkest days of autocracy and imperialism. ENFORCES JIM CROW METHODS Houston Stages 'Lily White' Primaries Chicago Defender: Houston, Texas: Ann 6-The report of Texas State held their first primary election in this state Saturday, July 24, and a studied effort was made by the Creager forces to keep the Warback supporters from the polling places. Both in this city, San Francisco, Texas, and New York, Texas cities, the Creagerites tried to conduct the primary election just as they have manipulated their various conventions in the state for the last six years. R. Creager is the republican national committeeman from Texas who used all his influence to defeat Harry M. Warback, the only republican congressman from Texas in the 14th Congressional (San Francisco) election. He has been a non-nominationer, the congressman was renominated over Fred E. Knetech, a reformed Democrat, brought out by the Creager-Nolte-Lee faction to defeat Warback. The District Court held that the republican county executive committee did not have to print the name of C. F. Richardson, editor of our race, Richardson's supporters decided to go to the polls, and the 14th Congressional (San Francisco) election was a "lily-white" county chairman and a candidate to succeed himself in office, and write in the name of Richardson. When the election was held Saturday, the race voters in the three heavy race precincts, numbers 25, Third Ward; 30, Fourth Ward, and 48, Fifth Ward, with fully 2,000 qualified voters, were disfranchised. Morris and his crowd refusing to hold elections in the first place, the 14th Congressional (San Francisco) election was a appreciative number of race voters resided, yet advertising bogus and phoney polling places, which special detectives could not locate. Despite this illegal operation and his书记员, the election, several hundred republicans cast their ballots for Richardson, although Morris and his gang will not count said votes, holding that they were illegally cast. NEW ORLEANS PRISONER SLAIN NEW ORLEANS PRISONER SLAIN New Orleans, La.—Authentic information has been given over the city of the horrible killing of Andrew Johnson, Negro, who was recently murdered at the state penitentiary at Angola, La. Johnson is said to have been beaten to death by one of the prison deputies, and his body buried without notice to his family. Johnson was convicted and found guilty without capital punishment of the murder of Patrolman Frank Mahen of the police force. The case was given much publicity through columns of The Houston Informer, giving Johnson's personal statement, made to his pastor while confined in prison and during the trial. The Informer was instrumental in raising funds for his defense by appeal and publicity given in an effort to secure funds. J. Rosenberg, attorney, also served as the lawyer of the prison officer who served him from the gallows. Patrolman Mahen and Detective Asset were in the Carrollton district, February 5, 1928, in a police automobile in search of suspicious characters, it is alleged, when they ran upon Johnson. They invited him to get in the car, apparently, for a lift to his destination. When he attempted to jump into the vehicle, the police found him according to police statement, and Johnson pulled a gun and shot the policeman. The statement given by Johnson to his pastor while incarcerated, was to the effect that he thought he was being held up, as he had a large sum of money on his person, and thought only to protect himself. He never knew why, was offers until after the shooting and his arrest. Though Attorney Rosenberg was successful in saving him from the hangman's noose, his life was taken by the prison deputy. NEW ADDITION FOR COLORED ON MARKET Another residential addition for colored citizens is being placed on the local market this week by the Buena Vista Company, with offices at 208 Merchants Exchange Building, with L.E. Norton, one of Houston's most substantial white citizens, as the owner of this latest subdivision. The name of this new residential district is Buena Vista Addition, which is located one block off Market Street in the Fifth Ward, adjoining Denver Addition (white) on the west, and the owner states that this addition is right in line for civic improvements when the county begins to spend the $6,000,000 road bond issue approved by the voters during the past winter. It is also located in close proximity to the industries around the Ship Channel, and already has excellent street car transportation, according to the owner. The sales end, is being handled by Mr. Dickinson, who has had considerable experience along this line in Houston, San Antonio and other Texas cities; bringing to the sales organization ripe and rich experience gained over a number of years. The original announcement concerning Buena Vista Addition appears elsewhere in this issue of The Informer, and prospective home owners and those desiring additional investments here along this line, will do well to read said advertisement. From Philadelphia, the doctor will expect to spend several days at Harlem Hospital. So route will he visit Dewey and St. Louis. FLORIDANS PUNISHED FOR KILLING NEGROES (By the Associated Negro Press.) After Jethro came to Moses he observed how completely Moses' time was taken in Judging Israel. When he saw the greatness of the task, he inquired as to why he was doing the work all alone. Moses explained to him that his task was not merely a matter of judging, but of teaching the statutes and laws of God to the people. Jethro recognized Moses's motive, but insisted that his method was not a good one, as it would result in wasting his strength. 2. Jethro's plan (vv. 19-23). (1) Moses was to be unto the people Godward—to bring their causes unto God and teach them the ordinances and laws, to show them the way wherein they must walk and the work they must do (vv. 10, 20). (2) Suitable men should be provided as rulers over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens (v. 21). All great matters should be disposed of by Moses, and all unpatriots, matters should be adjusted by these judges. (8) Qualifications of these subordinate judges (v. 26). (a) They were to be "able men," that is, men of strength. They must be men of such intellectual power as to enable them to understand the problems presented, and of such will power as to execute the judgments rendered. (c) "Men of truth." This means men are able to discern truth, men who love truth, men who tell the truth. (d) "Hating covincentions." These men must be haters of unjust gain, people must be free from the suspicion of following his profession because of personal gain. (e) Accesses to Jethro's Counsel (vr. 24-27). The treat came through Frank Parrell, a member of the board of Co-operative Workers of the Negro Juvenile Dolinquents. Mrs. V. B. Thompson, president, had charge of the children, assisted by Mrs. N. Parnell, Mrs. Jones and two sisters, who were in charge of the children of the Holy Family Orphanage, who were part of the party. Through the kindness and generosity of Manager Toups of Loew's State, the children have been favored the second time, with the opportunity of witnessing a splendid show gratis. TAYLOR'S BARBECUE DELIGHTFUL EVENT TAYLOR'S BARBECUE DELIGHTFUL EVENT Just as The Informer predicted in a previous issue, this paper know that such internal issues as injected into the republican party, such as the "blowout" of the Republican publican, "lily-white" bosses to deny all republican electors their constitutional rights to participate in said primary election, as free American citizens, would be used to an advantage by Negro voters in North, where their influence is considerably felt in republican circles. Taylor, in fact, the entire Taylor family-staged an old-fashioned barbecue on the property. Pierce Junction Tuesday afternoon. The Informer has finally concluded that THE GAME IS WORTH THE AMMUNITION, and THAT OUR PEOPLE, particularly those who were disfranchised in the several city precincts, as well as those in the city and state who are unwilling for their racial brothers and sisters to be disfranchised by a bunch of political tyrants, to FIGHT A NEW DOMAIN, RISE A NEW LAWYER AND FIGHT SUCH DISFRANCHISEMENT TO THE BITTER END. All means of transportation were employed, from Lincoln's to the old, reliable "flivvers," and it was a jolly and happy crowd that made up the barbecue party on the Taylor ranch. After eating to their hearts' content, an abbreviated Charleston contest was staged, but the judges could not agree on the winner, and, since all had previously won eating prizes, no awards were made. In the eating contest several tied for first place, and the runners-up were so numerous that the idea of awarding prizes to the winners was abandoned. Many left the Taylor ranch and oil field reluctantly, hoping that another such feast will be carded before many more moons.
