HOSPITAL BENEFIT PROGRAM.
Colored Houstonians will be afforded an opportunity next Thursday night. March 5, to show their attitude towards the new Houston Negro Hospital the $300 gift from J. S. Collman to the colored citizens of the community, when the Colored City of Taylor Choral Club, the South premier music organization, will give its second annual spring musical festival as a benefit program for the equipment fund of this Third Ward
Though dedicated and turned over to the race of June 11, the musical program being given some time after the dedication), the doors, not institution, have not been opened. Instead, it is institution, a vital equipment and facilities; and under the terms of the gift and the award, which donated the land for the hospital, the colored citizens of Houston Colledge-Taylor Choral Club decided to make a substantial contribution to the annual spring program; and thus the festival next Thursday will enable our students to participate, considerably, if members of our race will purchase tickets and attend the far-reaching importance of so doing; for the making of this festival a huge contribution to the hospital's doors, and the fact that the Houston Negroes are in dire and urgent need of a program, let all of us boost the musical festival and literally fill the auditorium next Thursday night to the realization of the central organization and at the same time a worthy and important remission of the program will begin premature at 8:30 p.m. and no one will be permitted to attend until the duration of the remission of a number.

During this period of time they were subjected to a rigid examination by the New York insurance department and successfully met every requirement of what is regarded as the strictest and most technical insurance department in the world.
This achievement on the part of this organization, which is the largest capitalized life insurance company of our group, is one of the most outstanding events in the history of our commercial life and evidences the fact that we have reached that point in our business development where it is possible to meet any test that may be given.

The attainment of the achievement of them, by them, and for them can be better be appreciated when it is realized that the armstrong investigation in 1926 the insurance company into the "Empire State" building most strengest of any state; insuring the reunion of the stockholders, accents, and the most important absolute protection to policymakers, company. The fifth company is Victory Life Insurance Company of Chicago, which has the unusual distinction of being the only Illinois company out of a lot of companies to do business in New York.
The advent of the Victory Life Insurance Company of Chicago will bring to the Negroes of that state an insurance service unburdened by state taxes, which will enable them to secure the largest percentage of less than three years built up in the United States in a possible cost; open up new avenues of employment, and offer to them an opportunity to grow whose growth has been unprecedented.

Washington, D. C.-President Calvin Coolidge announced Friday that James G. Carter had been appointed minister to Liberia, to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of Dr. Solomon Porter. Mr. Carter is a native of Brunswick, Georgia, and a former resident of Chicago. He was appointed as consul to Madagascar by President Roosevelt, twenty years ago, and has served in this position ever since. He was in the states, on leave of absence, when he received the recent appointment which is a distinct promotion. Mr. Carter is also the president of the cry of politicians for this post and perhaps came as a disappointment to many of the ambitious members of the inner circle. William T. Francis, who had the backing of the colored advisory board which functioned during the last campaign, was the most prominent contender. Mr. Carter is eminent for his twenty years of consultative service will be of much value to him in his new work.

A knowledge of the admittance of the company into the "Empire State" came as the climax to the first annual home office force and friend of the company. Approximately three hundred auditors of the Washaburg Avenue N, M. C. A. when Dr. and Mr. P. M. Shaw of New York City, directors of the company, entered ample space. Dr. Savoy was immediately appointed, and the secretary of the company, who in turn, to President Overend the office, was appointed to the office which, upon the opening, he found much to his surprise the certificate of authorization, authorizing Victory Life Insurance Company to become a member of the business leading to Victory Life operating in that state. Pandemont immediately broke loose and for some time a business leading to Victory Life program. Chas, T. Hamilton of Braddock, Pa., John H. Campbell of Home
stead, Pa.; Louis N. Poultry of Brooklyn, New York, and their associates,
who claim to be officers of the United Supreme Council and the Imperial
Grand Couneil of the Ancient Arabic Order of Mystic Shrine of North
and South America and their followers, have come to grief over losing the
injunction suit they filed against C..L. Mitchell in Chicago in July, 1920,
HT. Broadus, 33 deg.; C.'T. Hamilton, 33 deg.; John H. Campbell,
83 deg.; all of Pennsylvania, and Louis N. Poultry of N. Y., and their as-
sociates, enjoined C. L. Mitchell and his associates from claiming to be
officers of the above named Supreme Council and the Imperial Grand
Council and their affilinted bodies,
‘The injunction was conducted by:N. N. Boozier of Texas, who was at
that time grand secretary-general of the United Supreme Council, Booz=
ier made a wonderful progress until 1922, at which time it was pointed out
that C. L. Mitchell and his co-defendants were the legal officers of the
Supreme and Imperial Grand Council, owing to the fact that they had all
the original Grand Lodges with them.
Boozier knew that after being informed of the fact that C. L. Mitch+
cll and his officers had all evidence in their favor, he ceased to push the.
suit any further; and, when Boozier and his officers met in their Supreme
Council in Cleveland, Ohio, in June, 1922, Boozier resigned his office as
grand secretary-general, after holding it for two years, 4
After the death of Broadus in 1921, Boozier claims that the officers
that succeeded Broadus, more especially those of Pennsylvania, seemed to
be using the Supreme Couneil and all of its affiliated bodies for their own
selfish purposes and benefits to.the extreme, whilé C. L. Mitchell, on the
other hand was another Pharoah, ‘This did not meet ihe spoteral oi
Boozier, and Boozier fought against the selfish motive. 2
Chas, T. Hamilton and his co-defendant and C. L, Mitchell and his eo.
defendant, both claiming that they were the legal officers of the above.
named bodies; in other words, there were two sets of officers of the Su
preme and Imperial Council, and their ‘affilinted bodies, and after the.
death of Mitchell, Boozier sought to consolidate with the Mitchell faction,
after having an interview with G. C, Williams, 33 deg, of Shreveport,
Louisiana, r
In June, 1926, Boozier met his Supreme Council and put the matter
before the Grand Masters’ Council in Chicago, all agreeing to consolidate
with the Mitchell faction, except John H. Campbell of Pennsylvania and
Henry Williams of Baton Rouge, La. After the agreement was perfected,
Boozier informed a eat uae Ce ants had
taken all the original grand lodges in. the United States thém, he
also informed the court of the consolidation, 3
‘This fact being submitted to the court. in November; 1926, the
considered the same, the court.took it for granted since Mitchell
his co-defendants had all the original grand lodges with them antl de
clared C. L. Mitchell and his set of officers were the legal officers and the
court refused to go into the matter any firrther and at once dismissed the
injunction suit that was filed againstMitchell in July, 1920, suit dismissed
Dec., 1926; this was a knock-out blow to Chas. T. Hamilton, John He
Campbell and their followers.

abput Feb. aan ean of these men are working hard ‘trying
tovorganize them s bogas and a clandestine Masonic lodge of thelr own and ,
they are being assisted and guided by one Henry Williams of Baton
Rouge, Louisiana, who is also an expelled Mason.
“ Mr, Hatten was suspended near two years ago from the F. & A. M.
Lodge,in the city of Fort Worth, and then made aa application in the A-
F, & A. M, and was accepted. Within 14 months, three local Eastern Star
chapters of Ft. Worth and one local Masonic lodge had filed. charges
against Mr. Hatten.
I suspended Mr. Hatten July, 1926, and placed the charges before the
rand lodge Dec. 15th, 1826, Deputy K. L. Walker, 32nd deg. of Dallas,
was the prosecutor and Brother A. J, Nero, 33d deg. of Dallas, was his at-
torney. After hearing the argument by the attorneys on both sides for
more than two hours, the facts were brought out that Hatten had com-
mitted some of the most diabolical crimes that the grand lodge had ever
witnessed.
He did not only violate the Masonic law but he violated criminal stat-
utes of the state of Texas, and he was expelled from the order for. ten
years; and Mr. J. J. Glasco was also suspended on a serious charge on or
shout February 1, 1927, and he will be tried by the grand lodge in June,
1927.
‘The one Henry Williams of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who is aiding
and supporting the above named expelled and suspended men, isan ex-
pelled Mason from Saint John Grand Lodge of A. F. & A. M. of the state
of Louisiana. The said Henry Williams was expelled from the Saint John
Grand Lodge A. F. & A. M. in 1917 or 1918 for embezzlement in the sim
‘of more than $200 from the Saint John Grand Lodge, and he is now com-
ing over in Texas to defraud our people out of their moneys.

Women! Girl! Beauty Your Hair!
Begin Now! Why Not Have
Beautiful Hair?
Use St. Clair Hair Preparations and See How Quickly Improvements Begin.
Attractive women everywhere depend on the St. Clair chef to get you. Nature lovers upon the young beauties of hair, yet how raw rests her hair? She must be retained or maintained with St. Clair's special care. This fact. It is no experiment. The real reason for her hair's great destroyer. First comes dandruff, then ever increasing. The pure ingredients are the keratin, antiseptic and medicinal values of her hair. If you desire soft, lustrous hair, if you desire no falling hair, if you desire no falling hair and no more flicking hair—use the St. Clair preparations for hair. The menu is apt to be the most appealing to the people who no longer personalize or through mail. Many teachers put the preparations for particular courses taught personally or through mail. Many teachers put the preparations for particular courses taught for reply.

ABOLISH THAT INIQUITOUS FEE SYSTEM.
_ “Much has been said and written about and against the iniquitous
‘and infamous feo system of Toxas, yet, with all its evils, ills and
ofects, there has never been any concerted action to abolish the
‘system and consign it to the serap-pile with other darkage and
‘obsolete methods of dealing with erimes and criminals,
“) We have read interesting and illuminating articles regarding
Ib dperntions and activities of eartain fergranbing ottoen, whe
‘miake promiscous raids, with colored people as their chief vietims,
‘And then-got the justice of the peace out of his bed and compel
w¢ often innocent and defenseless persons to plead guilty to
$ and sundry crimes.
of colored: people pleading “gulty”” to charges ts
practice in the South, whose section is blighted and
by the high-handed, unserupalous and unprineipled ac-
‘and deeds of so many of its peace and constabulary ofticers,
‘out a bare existence or grow wealthy and fat, fleeeing and
‘ilehing the helpless, innocent and defenseless colored citizens out
“of their meagre means on finable charges and accusations,
© Next to lynch-law, the iniquitous fee system has done more to
‘stimulate the exodus 6f the colored brother to the North and East
and cause diatisfaction among those remaining here than an
‘other form of Southern injustice and inequality; for it is nothing
more or Jess than legalized lynch-law.
Tt matters not whether the accused is guilty of some crime o
not, if the arresting officer or officers say that the black man
‘woman (as the case may be, as they raid and arrest nearly a
‘many women of thie race as they do men) is guilty of some crime,
hhe or she is guilty and all the witnesses under high heaven ean not
influence the court's verdict to the contrary. .
‘One justice of the peace said to a colored man ducing the last
‘week of his tenure of office, “Boy, we know you are not guilty, but
‘we need the money!”
‘The idea seems to prevail in these eireles that some persons
‘ust serve 4s goats or sources of revenue for these hungry of-
ficers, and the black people can be led like sheep to the slaughter,
‘under ordinary circumstances, and virtually robbed of their little
“mites apd meagre finances. ~ ———— =
‘We once heard a presiding officer of a court in a Texas city say’
eee eee
‘ont:
Gatch the “cost?” Well, that little “cost” is what makes a
‘small fine assume mammoth proportions.
“fo illustrate: We know a colored man who was arrested on a
trivial otfenve and after fighting his case, was, fined 1 and
” but when he got through paying the “cost,” it had passed
‘the $100 mark.
“Practically every county officer got his out of that “cost,” and,
“because this is thetr chief and main method of earning x walary,
hay often frame” persons arrest them at night ty them a
night and got theirs out of the “cost” between suns.
If the fee aystem were abolished, officers would not arrest per-
sons ust to get some money for “at, Sulcy seakn,” ax we heard
fone fee-grabbing officer say in a justice court in Texas town,
Begs ih court ha hat the clred brother, chun not aul
evidence, would pay “$1 and cost.”
