V.-PILGRIMS BAND GAVE FINE CONCERT The citizens of Houston, who happened to be in the vicinity of Milam Street and Prairie Avenue Tuesday afternoon, were rewarded by hearing a concert given by an aggregation of musicians composed of members of the local Pilgrim band and the Prairie College band, $8 in number. "The only way this can be called a way of making the world Christian by leading the individuals to a personal knowledge and experience of the law into the power of the new life. Having shown in chapters 3 and 4 of 4th Edition the law as a means of justification, Paul makes practical application of this doctrine. The governing principle in the life of a believer is the Holy Spirit. Walking in the Spirit results in: 1. Loving service to others. 2. Victory over the flesh (vv. 16, 17). By the flesh is meant the corrupt nature of man expressing itself in the realm of sense and self. The renewed man is two men between which is going on a mortal conflict. The Christian must choose between good and evil. When he chooses the evil, the Holy Spirit opposes, and when he chooses the good the flesh opposes. Notwithstanding this deadly conflict, victory is sure. III. The Works of the Flesh (vv. 19-21). By works of the flesh is meant the operation of the carnal nature. The one who chooses to live according to the impulse and desires of his natural heart will be practicing the following sins: 1. Sexuality (v. 19). 2. Ireglion (v. 20). 3. The realm in the realm of the spirit and are: (1) Iolandry, which means the worship of Witchcraft or sorcery. This means all dealing with the occult. (2) Sins of temper (vv. 50, 21). These take place in the sphere of the occult. (3) Hatred (v. 21). Variance, which means strife and contention. (4) Emulgence (vv. 50, 21). With faith, passions in the state. (5) Sedition, actions in the state. (6) Heresies, factions in the church. (7) Euyangia. (8) Sins of excess (v. 21). (9) Drunkenness. This means indulgence in inexerting liquors. (10) Abuse of the institution under the influence of intoxicants. Those who practice such sins shall be excluded from the kingdom of God. (11) The Fruit of the Spirit (vv. 22-24) This indicates action in the realm of life. The product of the Holy Spirit. (1) Love to God and man. (2) Love, kindheartedness because of what man is. (3) Love, fellowship and fellowman. (4) Long-suffering, taking insult and injury without marmor, others. (5) Goodness, doing good to others. (6) Faith, belief, God and man. (7) Submission to God. Poultry of Brooklyn, New York, and their associates, who claim to be officers of the United Supreme Council and the Imperial Grand Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of Mystic Shrine of North and South America and their followers, have come to grief over losing the injunction suit they filed against C. L. Mitchell in Chicago in July, 1920. H. T. Broadus, 33 deg.; C. T. Hamilton, 33 deg.; John H. Campbell, 33 deg.; all of Pennsylvania, and Louis N. Poultry of N. Y., and their associates, enjoined C. L. Mitchell and his associates from claiming to be officers of the above named Supreme Council and the Imperial Grand Council and their affiliated bodies. The injunction was conducted by N. N. Boozier of Texas, who was at that time grand secretary-general of the United Supreme Council. Boozier made a wonderful progress until 1922, at which time it was pointed out that C. L. Mitchell and his co-defendants were the legal officers of the Supreme and Imperial Grand Council, owing to the fact that they had all the original Grand Lodges with them. Boozier knew that after being informed of the fact that C. L. Mitchell and his officers had all evidence in their favor, he ceased to push the suit any further; and, when Boozier and his officers met in their Supreme Council in Cleveland, Ohio, in June, 1922, Boozier resigned his office as grand secretary-general, after holding it for two years. After the death of Broadus in 1921, Boozer claims that the officers that succeeded Broadus, more especially those of Pennsylvania, seemed to be using the Supreme Council and all of its affiliated bodies for their own selfish purposes and benefits to the extreme, while C. L. Mitchell, on the other hand was another Pharoah. This did not meet the approval of Boozer, and Boozer fought against the selfish motive. Chas. T. Hamilton and his co-defendant and C. L. Mitchell and his co-defendant, both claiming that they were the legal officers of the above-named bodies; in other words, there were two sets of officers of the Supreme and Imperial Council, and their affiliated bodies, and after the death of Mitchell, Boozer sought to consolidate with the Mitchell faction, after having an interview with G. C. Williams, 33 deg., of Shreveport, Louisiana. In June, 1926, Boozer met his Supreme Council and put the matter before the Grand Masters' Council in Chicago, all agreeing to consolidate with the Mitchell faction, except John H. Campbell of Pennsylvania and Henry Williams of Baton Rouge, La. After the agreement was perfected, Boozer informed the court that C. L. Mitchell and his co-defendants had taken all the original grand lodges in the United States with them, he also informed the court of the consolidation. This fact being submitted to the court in November, 1926, the court considered the same, the court, took it for granted since Mitchell and his co-defendants had all the original grand lodges with them and declared C. L. Mitchell and his set of officers were the legal officers and the court refused to go into the matter any further and at once dismissed the injunction suit that was filed against Mitchell in July, 1920, suit dismissed Dec., 1926; this was a knock-out blow to Chas. Hatten of Fort Worth, who was expelled from the Masonic order on or about December 15, 1926, and Mr. J. J. Glasco, who lives on R. F. D. No. 4, Box No. 97, Palestine, Texas, who was suspended on or about Feb. 5, 1927—both of these men are working hard together trying to organize them a bogus and a clandestine Masonic lodge of their own and they are being assisted and guided by one Henry Williams of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who is also an expelled Mason. Mr. Hatten was suspended nearly two years ago from the F. & A. M. Lodge in the city of Fort Worth, and then made an application in the A. F. & A. M. and was accepted. Within 14 months, three local Eastern Star chapters of Ft. Worth and one local Masonic lodge had filed charges against Mr. Hatten. I suspended Mr. Hatten July, 1926, and placed the charges before the grand lodge Dec. 15th, 1926, Deputy R. L. Walker, 32nd deg. of Dallas, was the prosecutor and Brother A. J. Nero, 33rd deg. of Dallas, was his attorney. After hearing the argument by the attorneys on both sides for more than two hours, the facts were brought out that Hatten had committed some of the most diabolical crimes that the grand lodge had ever witnessed. He did not only violate the Masonic law but he violated criminal statutes of the state of Texas, and he was expelled from the order for ten years; and Mr. J. J. Glasco was also suspended on a serious charge on or about February 1, 1927, and he will be tried by the grand lodge in June, 1927. The one Henry Williams of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who is aiding and supporting the above named expelled and suspended men, is an expelled Mason from Saint John Grand Lodge of A. F. & A. Much has been said and written about and against the iniquitous and infamous fee system of Texas, yet, with all its illus, ills and defects, there has never been any concerted action to abolish the system and consign it to the scrap-pile with other dark-age and obsolete methods of dealing with crimes and criminals. We have read interesting and illuminating articles regarding the operations and activities of certain fee-grabbing officers, who make promiscuous raids, with colored people as their chief victims, and then-gat the justice of the peace out of his bed and compel these often innocent and defenseless persups to plead guilty to various and sundry crimes. This system of colored people pleading "guilty" to charges is no uncommon practice in the South, whose section is blighted and dwarfed by the high-handed, unscrupulous and unprincipled actions and deeds of so many of its peace and constabulary officers, who elke out a bare existence or grow wealthy and fat, fleeing and flecking the helpless, innocent and defenseless colored citizens out of their meagre means on finable charges and accusations, who elke out a bare existence or grow wealthy and fat, fleeing and flecking the exodus of the colored brethren in the North and East and cause disgustifaction among those remaining here than any other form of Southern injustice and inequality; for it is nothing more or less than legalized lynch-law. It matters not whether the accused is guilty of some crime or not, if the arresting officer or officers say that the black man or woman (as the case may be, as they raid and arrest nearly as many women of the race as they do men) is guilty of some crime, he or she is guilty and all the witnesses under high heaven can not influence the court's verdict to the contrary. One justice of the peace said to a colored man during the last week of his tenure of office, "Boy, we know you are not guilty, but we need the money!" The idea seems to prevail in these circles that some persons must serve as goats or sources of revenue for these hungry officers, and the black people can be led like sheep to the slaughter, under ordinary circumstances, and virtually robbed of their little mites and meagre finances. We once heard a presiding officer of a court in a Texas city say: "John, you had a right to do so and so, but I fine you $ and cost." Catch the "cost?" Well, that little "cost" is what makes a snake fine assume mammoth circumstances. To illustrate: We know a colored man who was arrested on a trivial offense and after fighting his case, was fired "$1 and cost," but when he got through paying the "cost," it had passed the $100 mark. Practically every county officer got his out of that "cost," and, because this is their chief and main method of earning a salary, the county persons, arrest them at night, try them at night and get them into a jail. If the fee system were abolished, officers would not arrest persons just to get some money for "fat, juicy steaks," as we heard one fee-grabbing officer say in a justice court in a Texas town, where the court held that the colored brother, though not guilty by the evidence, would pay "$1 and cost." The evidence, but the fee system is a prolific source of such procedure, entirely out of keeping with decent and honest criminal prudence. It outrages justice, makes mockery of honesty and decency, prostitutes and debases supposed minions and guardians of the law, flaunts defiance in the face of the accumulated wisdom of the ages, renders and maintains our Southern species of civilization a huge joke and is fundamentally at variance with and in direct contravention to the basic principles of criminal law and our constitutional law. Like mob-law, if unrestrained and licensed to run its course without let or hindrance, the iniquitous and informal fee system will ultimately engulf the South in a mighty maelstrom and wreak havoc upon our body politic. Let's abolish the damnable and diabolical system in Texas, or it will eventually prove a cancer and consume our very vital! The Houston Informer VICTORY LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY ENTERS NEW YORK STATE- WHAT IT MEANS. (By J, GARLAND WOOD, Auditor.) The Victory Life Insurance Company has been admitted to do business in the Empire State of New York; the first Negro company, ever to be admitted to do business in the state, and an unusual attainment for any company, is the first African American company to operate in Harlem, Brooklyn and other Negro districts in the world's greatest city has been furnished exclusively by the white companies who, according to the January edition of the Best Insurance News, write the business on behalf of the Negro community. Companies operating in New York state have enjoyed unprecedented growth. Companies operating under the rights laws of this state are the world's largest companies, having more assets, more employees, and more customers than all of the other companies in the other states and foreign countries combined. Today there are only forty-one companies operating in that state, and the largest of them is the Negro company, companies are not only the largest life insurance organizations, but number among the largest in the United States, with a billion, and insurance in force of excess of fifty billion dollars. It is quite natural, therefore, that we find there laws, regulations and laws of the Negro state. Finally, the company had to show that during the period prior to its admittance that it could meet the requirements of section No. 57 of the New York Insurance law, relating to the limitation of expenses for the Benefits of the Company, including the limitation of expenses for the Benefits of the Company, it provides that companies must limit their expenses for new business to the assumed mortality gains and loadings on first year business. It should be noted that the company will with the science of the effects of the Company's work on the effects of the company's investment and valuation, this section requires the use of loadings on the level net premium basis in calculating the maximum amount allowed for expenses.
