F. RICHARDSON SOME PERTINENT QUESTIONS JOURNALISTIC DEAN DEAD Newspaper reports stated that Detective Davis, who received a fatal wound in an alleged gun battle with a police officer, Robert F. J. Oldenberg and Robert Davis, day morning, was shot in the back of his head. These newspaper accounts also answered Robert F. J. Oldenberg and Robert Davis, and later taken from his hospital bed and lynched by a small group of officers when the officers sought to disperse a group of Negroes, apparently attending to their own business, as Anna and Rose streets early Sunday morning. If Davis were shot in the back of his bed, how could they be beating him, from the scene, fire a shot which would take such an aerial route, pass the park and turn around and strike the officer in the rear of his head? Did the slain officer's partner fire weapons? Is it unlawful for a group of colored persons to stand on the streets after a certain hour of the night? It curfew law in Houston for blacks? Who formed the mob which invaded the city hospital and subdued the half-dozen lifesaving corps of his lifespan corpse from a roundside bridge several miles from Houston? Who warned by one of the lycopers, and what was the insignia which adorned his uniform? Is it possible that a police officer had a hand in this reversal to savagery and barbarism, motivated by average the death of a fellow-officer? Are police officers the only person who wear uniforms? Didn't Davis, the dead officer, work conductor on Pierce car line for the police department? In this the name Davis who, a operator on Pierce car, shot a collision after the Negro left the car? Don't these trainmen and operators have uniforms? When did county continue to keep wounded prisoners in this hospital or will they make provisions for them in jail and criminal courts buildings? Why did the sheriff maintain only one guard at Jefferson Davis Hospital, and why should he have been caught "sapping," in the man in which he says he was "covered?" Why was no attempt made to seize police guarded as long as city police guarded as county officers were placed as his prisoner, instead, but mobbed? Perhaps if some of these questions can be answered, the authorities can be institutional recognition as an editor and publicist. He visited the chapel enclosed the faculty and student body, and his speech, coupled with the manner in which he penn, inspired and fired this writer to such an extent that the field of journalism became a joke and call us in days of our time. Well do we remember the Thomas Fortune, then editor of T. Harris's gripping addresses at this East Texas institution of learning, and the day to engage in editorial work. DeWalt, president of the Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, states that his local organization is offended by the conviction of the Houston huns who lynched Robert Powell. Mr. DeWalt's statement follows: "It has been the proud boast of Houstonians throughout America that the South whose good name had not been behemothed by a lynching. We are no longer boast of this record! "It is providential that this harrise of a time when we were at the peak of our glory—when the eyes of the world "Southern Hospitality" above our doors and throwing them open to the God moves in mysterious way!" Undoubtedly these cowardly defenders of "white supremacy" called themselves "getting even" for the verdict in the Chenter case, and thought that they would take an chances in Powell rebellion. To denounce and condemn the cowardly lynchers will not improve the situation much, but the law enforcement officers and agencies can bend every sincere and current effort to apprehend and punish the guilty culpits; for many citizens are of the opinion that a difficult matter to arrest the ringleader of this miniature mob. Knowing that certain elements here were incensed and enraged because another officer had fallen in an alleged fight with a Neo-Nazi didn't the authoritarian place a stranger guard at the hospital? Los Angeles, Cal.—(ANP)—With the California elections in August, the Republican candidates R. Bass, editor of California Eagle, and notedighter against segregation and discrimination, are preparing for the November presidential political battles over held in California. The Houston Negroes, on the whole, are law-abiding, peaceful and respectable, and the relations here between the two races are good. The Southern city; it will be unfortunate, not only for the white, but for here, but for the entire community, to have those amicable relations disrupted by such acts of barbarianism and savagery as pulled on the city's outkids early Wednesday morning. The Informer wishes to command the authorities and leading citizens of both races for the summer in which they are attempting to cope with the disgrace and damnable outcrop of the blacks will be the theme; list of this species on the municipal escutcheon of Houston. Heavenly Houston Turns Hellish and Hunnish As Mobbists Stage Pastime Wounded Black Kidnapped From Hospital and Treated to Dose of Famous American Concoction Several Miles From City—Victim Had Been Charged With Fatally Shooting Local White Detective—Wound In Back of Slain Officer's Head Could Not Have Been Inflicted By Negro Running From Slain Officer—City Council Orders $10,000 For Lynching Probe—Fine Prologue For National Democratic Convention. Despoiling the fair name of "Heavenly Houston" and pulling off a demonstration of anarchy and mobocracy just on the eve of the Democratic National Convention (which officially opens here next Tuesday morning) that this community will never be able to live down, a small group of white lynchocrats entered the Jefferson Davis (county-city) Hospital at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, seized Robert Powell, wounded colored youth; carried him several miles out of the municipal confines and treated him to a practical demonstration of the celebrated American pastime—Judge Lynch. With scores of nationally famous newspaper editors, writers and Democratic leaders already in the city, the mobocrats could have hardly chosen a more opportune occasion to stage their convention prologue, and thus bring everlasting discredit, disgrace which had been free from a lynching bee during its entire history. Powell was taken to the hospital early Sunday with a pistol wound in his abdomen, having been arrested at his home after A. W. Davis, 30-year old city detective (white), received fatal injuries in an uncalled for and unwarranted gun battle in the Fourth ward. A murder charge was filed against Powell in connection with the shooting, and police guard was being maintained over him by the police, who were being from his court. According to Detective Henry Brad, the colored men holding their show, the dead officer's partner, the HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1928 HOUSTON'S HELLISH HUNS! When the news was flashed over the city early Wednesday morning that Houston had put a team in Judge Lynch's loop, many could not believe it; for here is one Southern city which had never had a mobocratic disorder, and the fact that a small group of cowardly Huns had brought unspeakable shame and dishonor upon our fair and famous city, literally shocked and stirred the entire community. The Informer, not knowing the facts in the alleged gun battle between the slain detective and the lynched Negro, can not speak in the defense of the mobbed black, nor in criticism of the dead officer, as it relates to their alleged gun battle of Sunday morning; but this paper does know that no community is safe and secure where heathenish and hellish hoodlums can invade a hostile community. The police, by lying fatally wounded, it matters not what crime is charged at the hands of the wounded prisoner! It is rather surprising that these Houston hams did not pull off the lyrical song "Sum. Sum. Houston Hall." place for the Democratic past week. According to Detective Henry Bradshaw, the dead officer's partner, the two white detectives were patrolling 1:30 a.m., 1:30 a.m., Sunday, when they discovered a group of Negroes engaged in combat at Andrews and Genesee schools. He has spent fifty of his twenty-two years as principal of local schools. He is now to St. Louis in 1872." The faculty members of Bunkeer School were uniting in their honor, honoring Principal Williams fifty years of service as a teacher, author, and director of the celebration. She is well known as Miss Catherine White, former teacher of the Bunkeer School and director of the city. Upon his treasured possessions Principal Williams displayed yellowed letter more than fifty years of education at the Dell Phillips and William Lloyd Garron, addressed to a friend of Mr. Williams in the teacher's profession. The only other teacher of our race was Prof. Richard H. Cole, who died in 2013 years after his "golden jubilee" celebration. Principal William howe, who hopes to serve a long time yet, he is in his fifty years of service as a Hotel Employees Plan Big Meeting In Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland, Ohio. — (A N P) — P l a n a s are being made to make the forthcoming annual meeting of Colored Waiters and Hotel Employees, which will be held in Cleveland, August 11-14. The meeting will be in the history of the association, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the association, which was established three years ago, for the purpose of promoting the employment of the larger hotels of the colony in the leading Negro colleges of the country to include in their curricula the buying, preparing and serving of foodstuffs. "Many of the white colony hotels in the leading colleges," said Mr. Brown, "and if boys are to keep pace with the whites in the colony, they must receive the same instruction." There the Gilpin Players are nightly playing to a well-packed theatre and nightly adding more stars to their crowns. The presentation is the 1927 Pulitzer prize play, "In Abraham's Bosom" by Paul INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS Surveyed by The Associated Negro Press with the cooperation of The National Negro Business Institute and Department of Commerce and Other Reliable Agencies. Their success is assured their act has won universal appl NATIONAL BUSINESS LEAGUE MEET IN NEW YORK PROMISES GREAT BENEFITS TO RACE Indications point to the 1928 convention of the National Negro Business League which will be held this year in New York City as virtually marking a definite epoch in the history of the organization that has for more than a quarter of a century fostered Negro business efforts, and has fathered nearly a score of trade line bodies with substantial memberships of their own. John L. Holsey, national secretary of the League, was in Washington during the last week in May conferring with Dr. Frank Surface, assistant director in charge of the Domestic Commerce Division of the U. S. government, with whom he completed plans for the participation of the bureau in a program of instruction in retail merchandising. Dr. Surface will be present in person to deliver a talk, and the Foreign and Domestic Commerce Bureau will be represented for the whole period of the convention by James A. Jackson, assistant business specialist, who will take with him from the University of exhibit material and literature dealing with retail merchants problems. THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1928 Odd Fellows' Temple Meets All Building Requirements--Engineer After the collapse of the wooden awning attached to the Odd Fellows Temple, Louisiana and Prairie, which fell Saturday, June 9, fatally injuring a blind colored woman, rumors and gossip were rife in the city that the structure was defective, and that its collapse was inevitable. These reports and rumors became so widespread and persistent that James T. Ewing, grand secretary of the order and manager of the temple, held a conference with the contractor, Carl Curtis of Houston, and informed him of what the wise ones were saying about the building. Thereupon Mr. Curtis had Harold M. Sanford, consulting civil engineer with offices in the Esperson building, to check and investigate the structure and make public his findings. He spoke for itself, and should do much to allay the wild-eyed talk which has been going the local and state rounds since the awning fell. The prospect of $1,000,000 for endowment created much enthusiasm among the alumni. P. GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE With presidential electors for Herbert C. Hoover and Charles Curtis heading the Republican national ticket at the enera lection in November, the Repablicans of Texas, when they meet in their state convention at Fort Worth during August, to nomi- nate a state ticket, should select as a candidate for governor an outstanding Republican; a man who can command respect for the state ticket; @ candidate on whom the warring factions in this state can harmonize thelr differences. In the opinion of The Informer, Hon. . P. Lee of Houston is the logical man for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and his selection for this post would be a happy and wise one. Mr. Lee was nominated for this post in 1924, but withdrew trom the race when certain differences arose concerning the eam- pain, whereupon the party bosses nominated Dr. George C. Butte of Austin, who polled an exceedingly surprising vote in ‘the race against Mrs. Miriam A. Ferguson, Democratic eandi- nt. ‘The Informer always questioned the Republicanism of Dr. Butte, and when his eampaign pronouncements and. statements demonstrated that he was catering and appealing to the dissatis {fed Democratic and Klan vote to'the exclusion of the genuine Re- publicans, this paper refused to support Dr. Butte.
