SOME PERTINENT QUESTIONS
JOURNALISTIC DEAN DEAD
Newspaper reports stated that Detective Davis, who received a fatal wound in an alleged gun battle with a police officer, Robert F. J. Oldenberg and Robert Davis, day morning, was shot in the back of his head.
These newspaper accounts also answered Robert F. J. Oldenberg and Robert Davis, and later taken from his hospital bed and lynched by a small group of officers when the officers sought to disperse a group of Negroes, apparently attending to their own business, as Anna and Rose streets early Sunday morning.
If Davis were shot in the back of his bed, how could they be beating him, from the scene, fire a shot which would take such an aerial route, pass the park and turn around and strike the officer in the rear of his head?
Did the slain officer's partner fire weapons?
Is it unlawful for a group of colored persons to stand on the streets after a certain hour of the night? It curfew law in Houston for blacks?
Who formed the mob which invaded the city hospital and subdued the half-dozen lifesaving corps of his lifespan corpse from a roundside bridge several miles from Houston? Who warned by one of the lycopers, and what was the insignia which adorned his uniform?
Is it possible that a police officer had a hand in this reversal to savagery and barbarism, motivated by average the death of a fellow-officer?
Are police officers the only person who wear uniforms?
Didn't Davis, the dead officer, work conductor on Pierce car line for the police department?
In this the name Davis who, a operator on Pierce car, shot a collision after the Negro left the car?
Don't these trainmen and operators have uniforms?
When did county continue to keep wounded prisoners in this hospital or will they make provisions for them in jail and criminal courts buildings?
Why did the sheriff maintain only one guard at Jefferson Davis Hospital, and why should he have been caught "sapping," in the man in which he says he was "covered?"
Why was no attempt made to seize police guarded as long as city police guarded as county officers were placed as his prisoner, instead, but mobbed?
Perhaps if some of these questions can be answered, the authorities can be institutional recognition as an editor and publicist. He visited the chapel enclosed the faculty and student body, and his speech, coupled with the manner in which he penn, inspired and fired this writer to such an extent that the field of journalism became a joke and call us in days of our time.
Well do we remember the Thomas Fortune, then editor of T. Harris's gripping addresses at this East Texas institution of learning, and the day to engage in editorial work.
The Grim Reaper recently called Mr. Fortune, the dean of Négro journeymen, the head of demes, though he lived the allotted treasure and ten years, has brought anthus and narrow to journalists, and has editorial contributions and activities. Under Mr. Fortune's ownership, the New York Age gained national press.
Local Branch Posts Money For Lynchers
O. P. DeWalt, president of the Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, states that his local organization is offended by the conviction of the Houston huns who lynched Robert Powell.
Mr. DeWalt's statement follows:
"It has been the proud boast of Houstonians throughout America that the South whose good name had not been behemothed by a lynching. We are no longer boast of this record!
"It is providential that this harrise of a time when we were at the peak of our glory—when the eyes of the world "Southern Hospitality" above our doors and throwing them open to the God moves in mysterious way!"
Undoubtedly these cowardly defenders of "white supremacy" called themselves "getting even" for the verdict in the Chenter case, and thought that they would take an chances in Powell rebellion. To denounce and condemn the cowardly lynchers will not improve the situation much, but the law enforcement officers and agencies can bend every sincere and current effort to apprehend and punish the guilty culpits; for many citizens are of the opinion that a difficult matter to arrest the ringleader of this miniature mob.
"It is not prevention chaperon than punishment," he wrote for Houston to have thrown the right kind of prevention and protec- tion for Houston to have disregarded and disclinued in the eyes of the civilized world? "We oppose the state of Texas and the nation to punish and enforce strict and laxing laws on the conduct of immigrating characters of this character."
Look at at from another angle. Houston will lose considerable in
mountain or mid-rock and infiltrate it.
"Bellering that law and order is the foundation of America as a permanent institution," the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People offers an additional reward of $1,000 for the arraignment of the perpetrators of this crime."
In the face of the national parley of the Democrats, this lynching orgy will cause many to cancel their proposed visit to this city, and many of those who will come will live under a terrible mental strain and in constant fear of mobocratic demonstrations during the convention.
Furthermore, what assurances have the delegates and visitors that they will be safe and secure from humilih horrors while here attending the convention.

Didn't this guard have any type of weapon, and if he did have a gun or pistol, why didn't he at least fire a shot in the direction of the departing mobbists and thereby alarm the neighborhood? Knowing that certain elements here were incensed and enraged because another officer had fallen in an alleged fight with a Neo-Nazi didn't the authoritarian place a stranger guard at the hospital?
Los Angeles, Cal.—(ANP)—With the California elections in August, the Republican candidates R. Bass, editor of California Eagle, and notedighter against segregation and discrimination, are preparing for the November presidential political battles over held in California. The race is to be between Ted Cruz and Fred Roberts, present nominees.
Is the wave of nullification and disregard for constituted authority, which infests and infects the South, one of the contributing factors to this Houston lynching? The Informer also wonders if certain remarks made by some of the law-enforcing officials of this county, when Pete Chester got off with the light sentence at his Huntsville trial for slaying a white Houston patrolman, influenced these local huns to take the law into their own hands in the Powell case?
Mobcrats and Democrats! What fine campaign thunder for Republicans during the presidential race!
The Houston Negroes, on the whole, are law-abiding, peaceful and respectable, and the relations here between the two races are good. The Southern city; it will be unfortunate, not only for the white, but for here, but for the entire community, to have those amicable relations disrupted by such acts of barbarianism and savagery as pulled on the city's outkids early Wednesday morning.
The Informer wishes to command the authorities and leading citizens of both races for the summer in which they are attempting to cope with the disgrace and damnable outcrop of the blacks will be the theme; list of this species on the municipal escutcheon of Houston.
Mr. Bass has never stopped his battles against the cells that have been used to make the need of a powerful, fearless, uncompromising Negro anomalyman absolutely necessary to the safety of the California group.
Houston Negroes are disgusted and resists, though unafraid, and many of our substantial colored citizens are open stating that they will not live in any community where heathenish and savagery coexist so such sporadic outcasts of anarchy savagery and "kultur."
and his ability as an editor soon become noteworthy.
There is absolutely nothing which can be said in defense of these cowardly and pusillanimous lume, but it will certainly be well for all conferred by the authorities take such actions as to make the repetition of such a hellish horror an impossibility; for if these few lousy lynchocrats think that their "stunt" is calculated to terrify and frighten the upstanding Negroes of Houston, they have another thought coming and have most assuredly "reckoned without their hosts." Heavenly Houston Turns Hellish and Hunnish As Mobbists Stage Pastime
Wounded Black Kidnapped From Hospital and Treated to Dose of Famous American Concoction Several Miles From City—Victim Had Been Charged With Fatally Shooting Local White Detective—Wound In Back of Slain Officer's Head Could Not Have Been Inflicted By Negro Running From Slain Officer—City Council Orders $10,000 For Lynching Probe—Fine Prologue For National Democratic Convention.
Despoiling the fair name of "Heavenly Houston" and pulling off a demonstration of anarchy and mobocracy just on the eve of the Democratic National Convention (which officially opens here next Tuesday morning) that this community will never be able to live down, a small group of white lynchocrats entered the Jefferson Davis (county-city) Hospital at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, seized Robert Powell, wounded colored youth; carried him several miles out of the municipal confines and treated him to a practical demonstration of the celebrated American pastime—Judge Lynch.
With scores of nationally famous newspaper editors, writers and Democratic leaders already in the city, the mobocrats could have hardly chosen a more opportune occasion to stage their convention prologue, and thus bring everlasting discredit, disgrace which had been free from a lynching bee during its entire history.
Powell was taken to the hospital early Sunday with a pistol wound in his abdomen, having been arrested at his home after A. W. Davis, 30-year old city detective (white), received fatal injuries in an uncalled for and unwarranted gun battle in the Fourth ward. A murder charge was filed against Powell in connection with the shooting, and police guard was being maintained over him by the police, who were being from his court.
According to Detective Henry Brad, the colored men holding their show, the dead officer's partner, the

HOUSTON'S HELLISH HUNS!
Without any attempt at alliteration, the abovecaption can apply to the small band of Nordic mobsters, who entered a local hospital early Wednesday morning, seized a colored youth who had been seriously, if not fatally injured in an alleged gun fight with a city detective early Sunday morning, carried said youth to nearby rural regions and there staged the first lynching in the history of what we have heretofore been want to call "Heavenly Houston," but which hereafter will more likely be referred to as either "Hellish," Heathenish" or "Hummish Houston."
When the news was flashed over the city early Wednesday morning that Houston had put a team in Judge Lynch's loop, many could not believe it; for here is one Southern city which had never had a mobocratic disorder, and the fact that a small group of cowardly Huns had brought unspeakable shame and dishonor upon our fair and famous city, literally shocked and stirred the entire community.
The Informer, not knowing the facts in the alleged gun battle between the slain detective and the lynched Negro, can not speak in the defense of the mobbed black, nor in criticism of the dead officer, as it relates to their alleged gun battle of Sunday morning; but this paper does know that no community is safe and secure where heathenish and hellish hoodlums can invade a hostile community. The police, by lying fatally wounded, it matters not what crime is charged at the hands of the wounded prisoner!
It is rather surprising that these Houston hams did not pull off the lyrical song "Sum. Sum. Houston Hall." place for the Democratic past week.
According to Detective Henry Bradshaw, the dead officer's partner, the two white detectives were patrolling 1:30 a.m., 1:30 a.m., Sunday, when they discovered a group of Negroes engaged in combat at Andrews and Genesee schools.
Why didn't the guard on duty shoot at the mob after it had re-
ceived the blood-colored prisoner to the waiting automobile just
outside the hospital?
Officerra Started Trouble
Seeing that they were Negroes, the officers, of course, ordered them to carry the pistol and still another began to beat the corroding to the officers, drove a pistol and still another began to beat the officer Bradshaw, according to his statement, arrested the Negro who had dropped the pistol, while Davenwort were fired and Davenwort later wounded when Bradshaw reached his side, according to Bradshaw's state. Subsequently a search was made by police officers in the section of the building where the officer was arrested, though the skin officer's partner declared that Davenwort had been shot in the back of the head; the officer pulled a queer tool and defended the laws of nature and gravitation, for a running man to shoot his pursuer
Authorities Held Responsible
Powell was placed in Jefferson Davis Hospital, with a light guard, despite the sentiment and feeling of certain the recent light injuries given to the given Peter Chichester for the alleged slaying of Officer The mob, which was unmasked and led by a white man described as wearing a black jacket with gold insignia with gold insignia on the marina arm and breast" was composed of various estimates by different Deputy Sheriff S. Y. Q. Britannia and was before the pitches of the invading lynchman, though the officer was not to effort to fire up the crowd.

$10,000 for Lynching Probe #
At a special meeting of the city council on Monday, the city government ordinance was passed approving the mayor to appoint a committee to investigate the city's police department, separate and distinct from the probe being made by the regularly constituted authorities in the Forsyth County city council. The city council also approved $10,000 to be used by the committee to investigate the police department prosecuting those found to have participated in the mobocratic demonstration. Mayor Oscar F. Holcombe appointed Judge Henry J. Dumamus as the chief prosecuting officer to other members of the body being B. M. Rearr, J. W. Neil H. R. Scalf, J. W. Neil H. R. Scalf, Messr. NATIONAL BUSINESS LEAGUE MEET IN NEW YORK PROMISES
GREAT BENEFITS TO RACE
Indications point to the 1928 convention of the National Negro Business League which will be held this year in New York City as virtually marking a definite epoch in the history of the organization that has for more than a quarter of a century fostered Negro business efforts, and has fathered nearly a score of trade line bodies with substantial memberships of their own. John L. Holsey, national secretary of the League, was in Washington during the last week in May conferring with Dr. Frank Surface, assistant director in charge of the Domestic Commerce Division of the U. S. government, with whom he completed plans for the participation of the bureau in a program of instruction in retail merchandising. Dr. Surface will be present in person to deliver a talk, and the Foreign and Domestic Commerce Bureau will be represented for the whole period of the convention by James A. The League is to be present at the big general meetings of the League. Such news comes from the bankers, the insurance officials, the newspaper association and several other bodies. The last group to unmistakably declare its intention is the bankers, but by no means the general directors' association in session a few weeks since in Birmingham.
It seems that the Business League is about to take on the character of the United States Chamber of Commerce, the large central body oforganizers in the banking industry, and the necessary for maintaining a strong central organization to care for the general commercial interests of the race in which all are interested as a need distinct from the more intimate problems of each line of business. Odd Fellows' Temple Meets All Building Requirements--Engineer
After the collapse of the wooden awning attached to the Odd Fellows Temple, Louisiana and Prairie, which fell Saturday, June 9, fatally injuring a blind colored woman, rumors and gossip were rife in the city that the structure was defective, and that its collapse was inevitable. These reports and rumors became so widespread and persistent that James T. Ewing, grand secretary of the order and manager of the temple, held a conference with the contractor, Carl Curtis of Houston, and informed him of what the wise ones were saying about the building. Thereupon Mr. Curtis had Harold M. Sanford, consulting civil engineer with offices in the Esperson building, to check and investigate the structure and make public his findings. He spoke for itself, and should do much to allay the wild-eyed talk which has been going the local and state rounds since the awning fell.
The letter follows:

So much speculation has been induged in as to who was responsible financially for the death of Mrs. Mattie Hunter, blind begged killed when the awning gave way, that Mr. Ewing stated to an Informer representative the other day that the various types of insurance carried by the order on the building took care of the fatality, as well as the broken plate glass and other damage. He further states that the order is still in business and moving along as days of yore, despite the propaganda of some who seem anxious to see the "grand old order" floundering around on the rocks. that the state must prove its case against the defendant.
A careful reading of the accompanying petition will raise some very interesting questions, which can not do Davenport any good at this late hour, but which can be sufficient causes to have led the governor to stay execution until the case could be gone in tooughly.
But Davenport was just a Negro—and had he not been accused of stealing, but what's the use of saying more? Read it for yourself and draw your own conclusions.
APPEAL FOR CLEMENCY
Houston, Texas, May 30, 1928.
To His Excellency,

the State of Texas,
Austin, Texas.
The underigned, Citizens Reliable Committee of Houston, Texas, pray that your excellence may be moved from death to life imprisonment, and herewith submit our request. Davenport from death to life imprisonment, and herewith submit our request.
As laymen we have always understood it to be the law that the state of Texas should be a double, and while we do not take the position that the record in Law, the evidence, the conscience, we do feel most strongly that we are willing in urging upon the state to grant the guilt, as shown by the record itself, is so grave that a man's life should be doubt. We are not doubt. We shall address ourselves to the question of whether such a doubt Owald F. Foster was shot and killed on May 22, 1927. The state of Texas should not Foster, the only present present at the shooting, so far as the Vern Phillips, the chief witness for the state, Miss Phillips testified on this crime committed but we do not make the testimony of Miss Phillips very, very important. REVIEW - JESUS THE AVION
GENERAL CHRISTIAN chooses you this day
BETWEEN TOPO- Jesus Teacher
HIS BACKGROUND LAYER of the BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION LAYER AND BACKGROUND TOPO-
THE BACKGROUND LAYER AND BACKGROUND TOPO-
THE BOS OF GOD WITH Power.
For session and adult classes a good
method of review will be to study the
teaching of each lesson. The following
suggestions are offered:
Lesson for April 1.
Lesson for April 1. Create Jesus endowed to make clear to make the reality of His divine personality and the meaning of His mission.
Knowledge of Christ's person and work
is essential to give points to the disciples in the tragic hours of life.
Lesson for April.
Lesson for April. Jesus Christ was announced by an angel and he was afterwards by many witnesses. Conviction concerning Christ's ability to effectively witness for Him.
In order to revive the drooping spirits of the disciples Jesus was transfigured before them. Two men who were disciples of Jesus converse with Jesus about His approaching death at Jerusalem, the very thing about which the disciples were so alarmed. The answer is given a foregone of the coming kingdom. April 22. Jesus as a son was faithful to his parents. He had a high regard for the true home. In this lesson He acts as a guardian for the home, which is the foundation of the home. Those who are actuated by His spirit will recognize marriage as the ideal marriage.
Lesson for April 29.
Jesus' answer to the question of the rich young ruler concerning what he should do in order to inherit eternal life is that he is the necessary love is supreme love to God and that we should be willing to part with everything his sake.
Lesson for May 6.
While Jesus was resting in the shadow of the cross, the disciples were disputing as to who should be the first to die. The true greatness is expressed in willingness to give oneself in service to others. Lesson for May 13. Learned Jerusalem and officially presented Himself to the Jewish nation according to prophecy. Jesus exercised his kingly authority in curbing the fig tree and driving money changers from the temple.
Lesson for May 20.
Under the parable of the husbandman who betrayed their trust, Jesus shows the Jews to be guilty of persevere and undivided love of God. The son of God. Many whole duty is summed up in one word—supremacy and undivided love of God. Jesus is coming in glory and will enter into judgment with those who have been unfaithful. It is incumbent upon all to watch so as to be ready for the lesson for June 3.
Though Jesus was the very Son of God, he was the same man the same time a real man and croused human sympathy, therefore he took His disciples to the garden. Lesson for June 10.
Because Jesus took the place of the sinner, he was despaired and rejected of men. The treatment of Jesus resembled the heart of the human heart. They chose Barabas instead of Christ.
Lesson for June 17.
Because Jesus made the supreme sacrifice for the sin of the world. When the price of redeemment was fully paid Jesus dismissed Him the son showing that He had all power.
Being Christians
"Daniel purposed in his heart."
That's the trouble with a great many people; they purpose to do whatever they want, their heads, and that doesn't amount to much. If you are going to be Christian, you must purpose to serve God. You must purpose to serve God, and that doesn't amount to heart man believeth unto righteousness."—D. I. Moody.
**Arrows of the Holy God**
Deep convictions of sin will not spring from rational consideration. No man can work them in his own soul; they are the arrows of the Holy God. No man can work them they stick fast—Berridge.

TALLADEGA GETS
BIG ENDOWMENT;
ALUMNI ACTIVE
Talladega, Ala.-The great feature of the recent commencement at Talladega College was the announcement by President Summer that the general education board had offered Talladega $500,000 for endowment on condition that Talladega raise an equal amount within five years.
The prospect of $1,000,000 for endowment created much enthusiasm among the alumni. The valuable grant of the General Education Board is well known that this powerful board never acts except after the most careful investigation. Not only have the agents of the board been at Talladega repeatedly, but the board had for its guidance the fund. The board has also been the Bureau of Education in their survey of Negro colleges last year. Further than this, the general board of education has assisted in the enlargement of the college through the addition of two new departments, one of which is speaking and dramatic art, as well as for additional teachers in other departments. The board is also interested in the increase of salaries. The pleasure of commencement was the reward of the alumni banquet was held for the first time in the new Fanning refectory, completed this year. This fine dining hall is short and is short of dormitory space for its present needs, it has provided for future in its dining facilities, which equipment for serving large numbers.

TALKING to a roomful of high school students an experienced clinic nurse said: "One of the basic rules of health for a student is to be naturally at all times. Normal exercise and diet habits should be encouraged, and can't disturb it. You take naked, since it works mechanically and can't disturb it." Particularly with girls, there are times when you take a soak every night for a few days. It's a thoroughly safe and harm-free way to get dressed or distress or gas pain or grinding. Nalp is different from any other substance. It can be taken safely no matter how you wear it and harmless and works so easily @Every woman should have a nalp on hand." The clinic's balance, he said.

POT CALLING KETTLE BLACK!
‘The editor of The Informer (readers will pardon this persona
reference) who was a delegate to the Republican State Conven
Toon which was held at Dallas, Texas, May 22, 1928, (having bee
Srl to sai partisan parley at the regular Republican conven

“As stated before in this paper, we have no apology, alibi oF ex-

POLITICAL PRODIGALS RETURN! ee eee amet eae
When the Republican State Convention had concluded its de
liberations at Dallas last month, and had refused to place any
colored man on the delegation to the National Republican Con
vention—adue to the fact that only 8 or 9 colored Republicans sa
in said convertion along with their county delegates where n
contests were involved, some of the ebony-hued supporters anc
adherents of the anti-Hoover faction in Texas sought to hav
considerable fun at the expense of the few Negroes who wer
delegates in the regular state convention.
Prior to the various Republican conventions in this state, The
Infornfer came out editorially for Mr. Hoover, and, while origin
ally favoring the commeree secretary for president and an unin
structed delegation from Texas, when the forees lining up in Tex
as against the Creager-Nolte machine began to attack and ean
nonnade Mr. Hoover, then Pix paper assumed the attitude tha
it was for an uningructed delegation as Tone as its, proponent
did not oppose Mr. Hoover but that since they were
Hoover's nomination, as ‘The Informer was for Mr. Hoover's
nomination and election as president of the United States, this
Paper was committed to the proposition of sending an instructed
‘delegation from Texas to the national conclave of the party.
After the Dallas convention fve ofthe six Houston Negroes who
attended the regular Republican State Convention, were the butt
of erude and pseudo-humorous jokes; one local sheet, apparently
Subsidized by the anticHoover forces of the state and nation, ever
placing the names of these five colored Republicans ina. tomb.
stone and literally conveying’ them to their political grave and
partisan tomb,
But, judging from what happened at Kansas City, vig: the
wellnigh unanimous nomination of Mr. Hoover as’ Republican
Presidential nominee; the facility with which the Hoover forees
controlled the Republican national executive committee, creden-
tials committee and convention proper; the ruthless manner in
whieh the antHoover delegates fram the Love Siar State were
treated, losing out at every turn; the temper of the convention
itself, towards the claims of the Wurzbach-Littleton faction—al
sopeir to Indicate that ur local_anti-Hovertes of colo. hi
meral ceremonies rather prematurely and consigmed -the
wrong persons to partisan death and political perdition!
thatthe meretary of emer wou never ind the epee
ey that the secretary of commerce would never Republi
can presidential riomination, have proven poor partisan prophets
and politieal prognosticators!
‘Their following was quite small and insignifieant prior to the
state and national conventions, and tt will be reduced to nil now,
for people are not wont to follow losing leaders, whether said
leaders are chosen by the people, or whether they” are self-ap-
pointed or superimposed.
‘The Informer is not gloating over the fact that the colored
brethren in the anti-Hoover camp went down to wellnigh inglori-
ous and ignominious defeat and disaster, nelther is this ‘paper
attempting to join the “T-told-rou-s0” aggregation; but since The
Informer's choice received the nomination and will: more- than
likely be elected next November, we are perfectly willing for the
public fas jadgment on the wisdom of The Informer’ pres
dential eho
Having been the first Negro newspaper in Texas to announce
its support of Nominee Herbert ©. Hoover, and having been one
of the few papers in the state or South, colored or white, to urge
and work for the commerde secretary's selection “as standard
bearer by the “grand old party.” The Informer has “no regrets
for the past ant no fears for: the future!”
As often stated in our pre-convention editorials, The Informer
regards Mr. Hoover as the most available and formidable cand
date the Republicans could have chosen to head” their national
ticket, and this paper and its editor will be found contributing
our “Dit” in the campaign to elect Mr. Hoover to the highest of-
fee within the gift of the American electorate,
While no fatted calf and sweet strains of musie greeted our
-bony-hued political prodigals upon their recent return to the city
from the Kansas City convention, instead of consigning them to
political graves and marking their ‘resting places ‘with tomb
stones, The Informer extends to them the right hand of fllow-
ship, welcoming them back to the fold of colured Hooveritest
LEE G. 0. P. GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE
With presidential electors for Herbert C. Hoover and Charles
Curtis heading the Republican national ticket at the enera
lection in November, the Repablicans of Texas, when they meet
in their state convention at Fort Worth during August, to nomi-
nate a state ticket, should select as a candidate for governor an
outstanding Republican; a man who can command respect for
the state ticket; @ candidate on whom the warring factions in
this state can harmonize thelr differences.
In the opinion of The Informer, Hon. . P. Lee of Houston is
the logical man for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and
his selection for this post would be a happy and wise one.
Mr. Lee was nominated for this post in 1924, but withdrew
trom the race when certain differences arose concerning the eam-
pain, whereupon the party bosses nominated Dr. George C.
Butte of Austin, who polled an exceedingly surprising vote in
‘the race against Mrs. Miriam A. Ferguson, Democratic eandi-
nt.
‘The Informer always questioned the Republicanism of Dr.
Butte, and when his eampaign pronouncements and. statements
demonstrated that he was catering and appealing to the dissatis
{fed Democratic and Klan vote to'the exclusion of the genuine Re-
publicans, this paper refused to support Dr. Butte.
Not only is Mr. Lee one of Houston's most distinguished cit
zens, but he easily ranks as one of the big men of this state and
section, and the Republican party will honor itself in choosing
this local Republican to head the state ticket at the November
[election. » 2
