SOME TELEPHONE SERVICE EMINENT SURGEON PASSES FISK JURILIE SINGERS
NEGRO RADIO PROGRAMS
With the conversion of the Capitol telephone exchange from a manual to the dial system, and the changing of all numbers on this erstwhile exchange and placing them on another exchange, local subscribers of the State Radio Program Company have been experiencing much difficulty in getting service since the change.
Despite the fact that virtually all of the telephones in the Fourth Ward of the Capitol were in the public's hands, and exchange number about the latter part of March, now new telephone directory has been distributed to the subscribers at hour of writing this matter.
With thousands of telephone numbers changed, and thousands upon thousands of daily calls, one can readily imagine the confusion occasioned in trying to get numbers which have been changed, but which have not been changed.
It appears to The Informer that the local telephone company should have supplied all subscribers with telephone directories, showing these changes in number, as they before. The numbering tile systems and changing the numbers, or at least simultaneously with the change.
Talking about confusion and muddle, but, verily, there is confusion in getting the number, as it is, the same as scribers endeavor to get telephone numbers.
Unless the attribution is remedied pretty soon, we fear that the paycheck system is not as good as the battle will soon be crowded, to overflowing with persons who have become demented trying to get a local telephone number.
In the death of Dr. J. R. Sheppard, eminent surgeon who fell asleep last week at Marshall, not only does the race lose an eminent professional leader, but the medical circle suffers
Having enjoyed an afternoon of music during the winter by the Pike band of Houston and South Texas will be given an opportunity to hear the music of Houston and South Texas singers at the City Auditorium, Sunday afternoon, April 28, 3:30 o'clock. These singers are just back in tour of Europe, where they have sung before the crowded heads and nobility of European nations. The American musical critics agree that this third generation of Pike jubilee singers surpassed the previous generation and quality of tone and interpretation of the favorite Negro spirituals, jubilees and Dixie melodies. The program was developed a program in the New York home of Walter Damrosch, the famous American musical leader, attended by the musicians, including Padwardick, and here is the tribute paid them by Mr. Damrosch.

HOOVER'S POLICY
BEARS FRUIT IN
SOUTH CAROLINA
Charleston, S. C. — (ANP)—President Hoover's express intention of "cleaning up the Republican party in the South," was evidently interpreted as "cleaning out the Negro," an action of the actions of chairman of the "cleanup committee," W. F. Brown.
Immediately following his return from Washington, boating to the州, Hoover helped his cleanup plans, which if carried out will doublelessly mean the utter failure of the party, as he stated that he intended to build up a white Republican party, and that he joined Joe Coleh, the ninety-year-old Republican leader in the Palmetto state, as "chairman of the Republican organization, and that all good Republicans, white and black

AFRICA STUDENTS
SCORE RIVALRY
AMONG CHURCHES
Atlanta, Ga.—Denominational competition in the African mission fields occasions waste of effort, causes unfortunate divisions among the people, and handicaps Christianity in its conflict with Mohammedism, according to E. Edwards of Murray Town, Sierra Leone, West Africa, speaking at the annual meeting of the African Students Union of the African Students' Association, last week at Gammon Theological Sensinary, this city. Even families are being divided along religious lines, he said, sometimes as many as three denominations being represented in a single family. He expressed the opinion that some means should be found by which the various churches might make a united, separate, and the people of mission-based.
In reply it was pointed out by Dr. T. S. Donahough, of the Methodist Foreign Mission Board, that many of the mission boards of America are seeking to obviate the difficulty complained of by the division of territory and by union enterprises, and that in certain of the mission lands the native Christians of the different denominations are beginning to unite on a common basis.
Dr. E. Edwards of the Methodist Foreign Mission Board, as Needed, Prod. E. N. Jones of Fretown, Sierra Leone, expressed the opinion that the type of missionaries needed today are those who come as friends and advisers, rather than as autocratic ecclesiastical dictators.
E. K. Nyabonga of Howard University, son of a hereditary Ugandan king, presided over the meeting, while very closely at a distance from various parts of the African continent. The school of mission

Little Rock, Ark. — (ANP) – Financial circles here are tremendously interested in the report that Century Life Insurance Company plans on acquiring the Binga bank in Chicago. Chicago—(ANP)—The t h a t teachers and president of Negro colleges and schools are interested in a large degree in "seeing Europe" is indicated by Dr. A. Wilberforce Williams, relative to the third annual Williams European tour, which will start from New York City July 18.
"In fact," said Dr. Williams, who is managing the team, "so many teachers decided to arrange for two sailing dates in order to make it convenient for those who cannot leave with the students, to give them the occasion, the directors of the movement have arranged for the second group to join the others at London, July 21." These tours, which had their origin three years ago, were promoted originally by the other members of professional and scientific groups. In response to the requests of the year to include educators in the group and arrange a special program which would be of benefit particularly to teachers who include visits to various internationally known educational institutions of the world famous hospitals.

WHIPPING POST
SENTENCE STIRS
AFRICAN FOLKS
New York City.—(ANP)—News dispatches received here state that the whole of South Africa has been aroused by the sentence of a white farmer by the name of Nafte to seven years in prison and to be given ten lashes for the brutal murder of a native who was working for him.
In imposing the sentence, the judge declared that due to the fact that Nafte had inflicted pain upon his victim by suspending him head downward from a tree and beating him to death that he likewise should suffer pain, hence he meted out the whipping post sentence in addition to the prison sentence.
It is the whipping post decree that has caused the stir throughout the district. There are those who declare that it should be removed from the punishment and others state that to mete out justice it is necessary to carry out the entire decree of the court. The former have branded Judge Colmon, who imposed the sentence, as a Negrophilist and the government has been appealed to modify the sentence.

Capacity Audience Greeted Singers In Rosenberg Concert
Rosenberg, Texas.—Members of both races came from all sections of Fort Bend County Tuesday night to witness the spring musical festival of the celebrated Coleridge-Taylor Choral Club of Houston, and they were amply repaid by enjoying the best of the ever-reunited in this city. Not only was standing room at a premium in the spacious auditorium of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, but many were seated on the platform and scores of both races remained outside at the windows unable to gain admission.
Among the whites auditors were some of the leaders in the county and section, including the legislature representative, presenter, and president of the county. A in t end of schools, who made a short talk in high commendation of the program at its termination; secretary of the
The program was rendered under the auspices of and for the benefit of the Parent-Teachers' Association of the Rosenberg school, Prof. A. W. Jackson, principal and promoter of the concert. FIRST SECTION—NUMBER 48
Negro Congressman Is Sworn Into Office; Many See Ceremony
First Negro Representative In 27 Years Seated By Lower House—Even Bourbon Dixie Demagogues Failed To Raise Howl—Colored Delegation Attends From Windy City and Other Points—Pickens Boosted For Harlem Congressman
Chicago.—(ANP)—For the first time in twenty-seven years, colored America may raise its head and point with pride to the fact that it has a representative in the first legislative body of the land. Oscar DePriest from the First District of Illinois took the oath of office Monday afternoon and became, not merely the representative of the second richest district in the country, but the hope of 15,000,000 Negroes who are looking to him to take their part when their welfare is at stake in the councils of congress.
DePriest left this city in a fanfare of glory. Great crowds thronged the Englewood Station to say goodbye to him as he boarded the Liberty Limited, bound for Washington to protect the liberty of his people. In his immediate party were Judge John L. L. of the United States, the President's political representative Henry Allen Boyd, Nashville, who came to Chicago to campaign for the election of DePriest; the Rev. J. B. Butler, Houston, Texas, who is arranging a speaking tour of the Lone Star state for the congressman in the fall; Robert DePriest, a brother, and Claude A. Barnett, director of the Associated Negro Press.
Armed with a certified copy of the papers which attested the dissimilarity of the case against him which grew out of the伪造文件, the DePriest's political representative, the ceremony of oaths, beating Garner, the train and held a sort of open迎宾礼, was more than one hundred votes than he related for their satisfaction of swearing in.
Many Negroes See Ceremony Three hours before the ceremony is held, the great crowd in twenty years had been in the center of the largest sprinkling of colored people. Negroes were also much in evidence during the party. In the original election of Martin B. Madden, whose seat he is taking, he was the active member of the Democratic Party. Of course, the term black is a misnomer and progressive life has led.
At dinner the group was the guests a white grouse on the train which arrived at the party, and among the callers the grusman Qinile of Los Angeles, who promised him a warm reception in the capital and Timothy Delahanty in the clerk of Cook County. Delahanty is now a confidential secretary to cer
Pickens Boosted From Harlem
The possibility of the election of a Negro congressman from New York has been a topic of discussion and his support. He let it be known that he wished that William Pickens, a delegate for the Advancement of Colored People, might be the man selected to camp in New York if a colored man was in New York if a colored man was apprehended regarding the apprehension, the being administered to Mr. DePriest, dispatched by Saturday's court action, when the oath was administered to Friday when the oath was administered to banc, the ceremony taking only three minutes. It has been proposed to give the oath to small groups.
West Virginia Grants Segregation Appeal In Huntington Cause
Charleston, W. Va.—(ANP)—The Supreme Court of Appeal of West Virginia on last Tuesday granted an appeal and supervised in the investigation case carried up from Huntington last year. The case which inquired into the case Huntington sub-division was directed by H. B. White, a white citizen, against the owners of the property, and buyers. The covenant agreed that none of the aliens would sell to the T. Gillis Nutter, who is the attorney in the case, set up the novel plan that his clients were Negro and not white. The neighborhood was now a Negro residential district and that the covenant was contrary to public policy. The covenant was supervised by Huntington branch of the N. A. C. P. of which H. D. Harwood, printer, is punishing the case and now

fanfare of glory. Great crowds in to say good-bye to him as he and for Washington to protect the immediate party were Judge John DePrieto's political organization who came to Chicago to campaign Rev. J. B. Butler, Houston, Texas, of the Lone Star state for the DePriest, a brother, and Claude Negro Press.
The sweating in took place at ten minutes to three. There was not a ripple of excitement, Speaker Longer said. "We were in the ceremony of oaths, beating Guber by more than one hundred votes, announced the change in the method."
Many Negroes See Ceremony
Three hours before the ceremony the largest crowd in twenty years had gathered. In this group there was a liberal sprinkling of colored people. Negroes were also much in evidence in the public and member galleries for which Mr. DePriest had already 150 members of the same sex.
Of course, the term black is a sub-name for the new Illinois congressman. He seemed whiter than many of the congressmen who call themselves white, and his tall commanding figure was in startling contrast to the appearance of many of the representatives from the hick states. He came into the house chamber early and many Republican members came up to shake his hand. Some of them he knew, others he made friends with. The representatives gathered in the chamber gathered in groups and chatted like magpies, or delegates to a Bapist conference. He was a disastrous member of the same sex. The members all took their seats at three raps of the gavel and went through two hours of exercises before swearing in.
Among colored persons observed in the galleries were: Mr. DePriest, Mr. and Mrs. Stanton DePriest, son and daughter-in-law of the congressman; Morris Lewis, secretary; Robert DePriest, John R. Hawkins, Bishop Sampson Brooks, Emmett J. Scott, William Trent, president of Livingstone College; Prof. Garland Wilkinson, E. C. Parks, Henry H. Boyer, E. P. H. H. H. H. H. H. W. T. Andrews, Webster I. Porter, James H. Howard, William H. Horton, Mrs. Norma Curtis, Joseph Johnson, Arthur G. Free, Rev. J. W. Jernagin, and R. R. Horner.

These are swift motion pictures that showcase the cream of speedman's talent offers sparkling entertainment to the tune of the orchestra, with their musicians, an aggregation of twelve jazz master musicians. Other attractions include overtures and Sammy Wilson's vocal voiced organ. All special attractions are in addition to the feature and latest film productions available.
With the advent of talking pictures, the movie theater became a Moviotech and Vitaphone equipment store. The theater also speaking screen with perfected facilities, offers sound, musical accompaniments, and interactive displays.
Efficiency of Employees
The entertainment value of the Egal's stage is the feature of paramount interest to observers; however, none enter this magnificent theatre unimpressed by the pleasing efficiency of the employees. Most in evidence, the handsomely uniformed skillfully trained, perfectly conducted members of the service department welcome Regal patrons. This "smiling Service" greets each patron at the door and continues until he is comfortably seated in the spacious and beautiful auditorium. Alert to answer all questions with efficient accuracy, and anxious that each patron shall be made happy and comfortable during his visit to the Regal, the service department represents in every respect "a charming host."
It is interesting to know that a total of fifty-five young members of our racial group are given employment at the Regal. This figure does not include the stage artists who come and go, but the permanent employees including such positions as house manager, assistant to house manager and treasurer, cashiers, moving picture machine operators, secretary to manager, house custodians, service directors, and others too numerous to mention.
Each employee is trained in efficiency and labors to exploit the Regal's motto "Nothing too good for Regal patrons" and its slogan "Service."
Garrison Recognized As Casting Director
Los Angeles, Cal.—(ANP)—Everybody around Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's headquarters is worried about the much consideration and deference as the white directors. "Slick em" has been working at the studio nearly two years, and he is largely knowledge of the industry. His work in the filming of "Halleynah" has largely to the success predicted for it.
Demand Grows For Negroes In Talkies
Los Angeles, Cal.—(ANP)—That local colored actors and extras will be featured in the show is the opinion held by competent observers of Hollywood activities. Every studio in the country has a talent standariness in musicals. Fox has completed the Fox Follies featuring Carolynne Shawden and her brother, Michael Browne. "The Thunderbolt," with a considerable number of colored performers in the studio, has been supported by Ethel Waters with a white supporting cast, has been finished by Warner Brothers, who paid her $2,500 a week. The comedy has been finished at Christie's studio, with many more being prepared by Spencer Williams, colored scent. Mr. Butler has booked in all 2,300 actors to various studios just since he was placed the week of March 22.

PRODUCER CANCELS SHOW BECAUSE OF "JIM-CROW" POLICY
Washington—(ANP) The accusation of a license for the theater in which Sam Griman, the New York producer of "The Jazz Regiment" was to have played that attraction in Pittsburgh, compelled the show to lay off in Washington, where it had concluded a two-week engagement with business. Behind this hung a tale of Washington theater owner's attitude toward the race.
The Pittsburgh cancellation came after the town had been billed, and the owner had been pending for sometime between house owner and affluent, but did so with the "Jazz Regiment"

It is known that they feel they are treaded on uncertain ground, and in all cases their experiments have not progressed to the capacity also growth and advance. The Fox people are not quite sure what is going to happen, but it is after it houses the big urban centers.

Mr. Grisman, long identified with Negro attractions, most qualify—called of which was "How Come," and practical showman that he is, seeing no sense in discriminations, had for two weeks endured under protest the policy of the Gapety management which compelled Negroes to occupy the gallery only and enter by way of an alley from the rear.
To keep his show busy he neglected for the outright rental of both the Gayety Theater and the President Theater, a dark house on Penneglavia Avenue. He settled on the President and was about to close when the owners insisted upon a clause in the lease demanding that downstairs patronage must be all white or all Negro. This defeated Grisman's proposed publicly campaign already laid out and ready for release to every newspaper in the city with large space advertising supporting it.
The lease was not signed, and the "Jazz Regiment" spent the week in rehearsal prior to going to the One-pheum in Newark, shone into the big city. Henry Cramer, producing director of a score of shows, had charge of the production and the revision instituted in its rundown.
Joe Jordan with his orchestra occupied the pit as musical director. George Sander, Chappelle and Stimnette, John Mason, Dusty Fletcher, Andrew Tribble and Young Page with his ukelele are among the donen principals in the show of 66 people. Incidentally, the scenic equipment is one of the heaviest ever taken on the road with a colored show. Four unusually heavy sets are included in the log-out.
During the layoff, Page obtained an engagement at the Howard Thurman School of Dance and served as son Carey with Shilton Broussas as master of ceremonies continue drumming with its weekly workshops with its weekly dancers of memory and added vaudevillians with changes in Indian and ingenuity in music in its eight years. A record worth noting, more remarkably, is the him himself work of Gallier, who is the him himself comedian with the organization who makes the public laugh, has not thought of needing a change of identity and studenness about his work that perhaps has been unknown, even to him before. The public directors at the law firm have become so adept at a well-dissipated routine of difficult dance numbers that perhaps the manager of Manager Liebman's warriors is the fear that some club or thundering day midnight show and grab them off in a bunch with a but salty affair of a day midnight show and grab them regularly, and have the omnipotence of a tiller unit in broussas. Carey has been a puppeteer and peppy dancing machine.

THEATRICAL SENSATION
Los Angeles, Cal., (ANP) -With the stark, grim, tragic atmosphere of Russia offset by magnificent settings, the film's title, "The Lowest Lift," and one of the largest runs of any great plays or musicals in the world, is a celebration of persecution of the Jews in Russia with startling demonstrations and surprising climax. The title, "Prize, Prey, as "Maryagge Seaton," was wonderful, though cast as a character the opposite of the man as Kasha, a app; Lanceur Kiner as Baron Steven Andrey; "Buddle" Thompson as Julian Balle, and Sidney Kline as the man offered outside parts. All Patton, local favorite, Chas. Gladen, Minnie, and Robert Arthur filled other roles credroitly. A large percentage of the audience was nightly and applauded very heartily.

New York—(ANP) According to a report, a stirring in the current lionheart biography, Gareth Bale is not scoring a hit in his latest motion release from Metro. The critic calls it "Gergo Dewey Washington does not get the short. New York — (ANP) — The wizards of the film industry are experiencing considerable anxiety in regard to the reception which is going to be expected from their performances or Negro themes. It is known that they feel they are treading on uncertain ground, and, in all cases, their experiments have not worked out well. Cabin" the expensive Universal production has been a disappointment to its makers, according to insiders, and the Fox people are not quite sure what is going to happen to "Hearts in Dixie" after it hires the big urban center of New York in its reception by both Negroes and whites generally as there is nothing evident in either case, remarks a writer in one publication. The main problem is the murmur in which exhibitors will consider the picture in sections of the film, in which fearing which might be fanned to dangerous proportions by an interruption in the audience. It is regarded as only natural that colored picture fans will marshal to witness the feature拍摄 that they will be willing to wait until it is shown in their own neighborhood film, in other films, is the salient point that in giving film food for serious

The little office of 1888 is now but a memory and a symbol. The great work of Rutherford now is not licensed to operate in 28 states, in which it maintains eighty-two (82) branches. Nearly 2,000 people all work in the activities in office and in field. Before each of them opens a vista of the race, they must be prepared for pacity and industry they bring to their work. Annual Report
The world rests, finally, on a few very simple old ideas. Fidelity is one of them—Fidelity, mother of Security, sister of Truth.
In fidelity to an ideal of service this Company came into being, more than thirty years ago. In that fidelity it has grown and prospered—amazingly. This growth and this prosperity, rooted in fidelity, are among the important assets of our advancing Negro commerce. In that sense they are your assets too and will, in even larger measure, be assets of your children.
It is in that spirit, and from that viewpoint, we have here set down the figures which express the progress of this Company in 1928—the latest link in a chain stretching back to a past century.
These figures express prosperity but in no narrow sense. They most increased peace and security in hundreds of thousands of Negro homes. They mean better living conditions, better employment conditions, for more hundreds of thousands of Negro men and women. They mean more scheduling and better schooling to pave the way to a brighter future for perhaps a million or more Negro boys and girls in whose hands lies the future of our Nation.
New York City. (ANP) - Myra Logan, 21-year-old daughter of Warren Logan, former vice-principal and treasurer of Tunkegue College, Ala., and $10,000 scholarship for four years at the New York Homeopathic Medical College and Flower Hospital, it was learned Monday.
The scholarship, recently established by Dr. Walter Gray Crumple for the University of Alabama, is the groovy desirous of studying medicine," is the only known one of its kind in this country granted by a medical college. Miss Logan is the first to benefit by it.
Myra Logan is an alumnus of Alabama University, where she received the bachelor's degree, and of Columbia University, where she received her master's degree in 1928. She is the sister-in-law of Dr. Engene P. Murray Mitchell administration. Dr. Murray is a professor who was a commissioner of education of New York City during the John Purrey Mitchell administration. Dr. Murray is a master of arts and doctor of law from Lincoln University. Miss Robert family.
Dr. Crump, donor of the scholarship, which you enable to take to the medical college to have a long time been interested in the advancement of Negro work in the medical field, attributable to his father, Samuel Crump, who was an active abolitionist and underground railway station station which many alives sought and attended. His father also occupied lecture platforms with Susan B. Anthony in the string of half a minute and half of the nineteenth century.
For the past four years, Dr. Grump has conducted special surgical clinics at the John A. Andrews Memorial Hospital with the "annual pilgrimage to Tukuege" fostered each year by William Jay Schieffelin of this city, and Olivia Rosemendon of Chicago, and officials of trustees of Tukuege Institute.

So often I have to ask them if I have from personal knowledge, and from what I have learned from the older women. I often ask them if I have from personal knowledge. Rev. Dibble, one of the founders of the Fourth Ward, said so much about the property of the Fourth Ward was bought by Dr. W. H. Houston, leading the Fourth Trinity. Trinity has always been fortunate in having on its church roster mounted Houston, leading the Fourth Trinity. At this point in the bishop's discourse, I had about change my mind about the bishop. They can preach, all I have thought to the contrary, notwithstanding. And I prepared to master my degree dissertation, to please power, ease, and money as the goal of life. I wished for an audience with the bishop, Hall, as Bishop Jones discussed the bishop in running the race, the bishop thought, he named three sins which he considered the greatest, namely, the failure and an attempt to do little. But you know, he passed. My feeble efforts with the power, he would fail so utterly that he be painted it and as I saw it then, that I shall refrain from making any further attempt to record it. Suffice it to say that he expressed sympathy during the bishop's lecture of our brother, James Long, April 11, 1929.

SOLVE
THE PARKING
PROBLEM
BY NOT
PARKING
With thousands of automobiles crowding the streets, Houston's parking problem is a real source of worry and annoyance to the motorist, not only because parked cars congest traffic, but the average citizen finds he must park several blocks from his business, office, theatre or hotel.
Street cars and busses actually offer the sensible solution. They do not need to be parked—they entirely eliminate parking worries.

WILEY WILDCATS
SMOTHER JARVIS
(By N. ANDERSON WEST)
Hawkins, Texas.—The Wiley Wildcat made it two straight over the Jarvis nine here by the score of 8-1. "Long Sam" Thompson, the Cat's rockie hurler from Beley, Oklahoma, was in rare forms and held the locals to a single tally and six scattered blows, two of which were of scratchy variety.
Over their fright after playing the Kansas City Monarchs, Coach Long's youngster looked like a different team, and played the type of game that has characterized the Cat nines of former years. Their hitting was hard and timely and their fielding fast, while their baserunning was much better than at anytime this year.
Aside from Thompson's phenomenal pitching in the game, the work of Evans, the Wiley outfielder, featured the series. The "Black Streak" smashed out a home run for his second time in two days, while two sensational running catches to rob "Hooks" Johnson of extra base hits, were more than any one could see.

State Oratorical Contest Excites Oklahoma Blacks
State Oratorical Contest Excites Oklahoma Blacks
Oklahoma City.—(ANP)—With the district contests under way, the entire state of Oklahoma is looking forward to the State Spelling Bee and Oratorical Contest to be held here April 26. This annual event which is staged under the auspices of the State Board of Education and sponsored by the Knights of Pythias of this jurisdiction, Dr. Chas. B. Wickham, grand chancellor, has done more to arouse the interest of the students of the state in their studies than any other agency.
The spelling bee is held for children in grade schools not over the eighth grade. The oratorical contest is for students in the high schools and this year, the subject is to be "The Constitution of the United States." It will be held on the 4th Friday in April at the Cavalry Baptist Church, the judges to be named by the president of Langston University and approved by the board of education. Rivalry always runs high, both teachers and pupils entering into the competitive spirit engendered.
Each county has entered students in the spelling contest after elimination trials in their own districts. High schools in the oratorical contest are Washington at Ardmore, Douglas at El Reno, Lincoln, Chickasha, Douglas, Oklahoma City, Boley High School, Boley, Dunbar, Shawnee, Lima High School, Lima, Watonga, Washington, Enid Hall Hennessy, Douglas Kingfisher, Dunbar, Hennessy, Lincoln, Chandler, Favor, Guthrie, Dunbar, Crescent, Dunbar, Cushing, Attacks, Vinitta, Washington, Sapulpa, Dunbar, Battlesville, Lincoln, Claremore, Washington, Sand Springs, Mandal High, Muskogee, Dunbar, Okmulpee, Taft, Dunbar, Rentiesville, Dunbar, Eufaula, L'Overture, McAllester, Phyllis, Wheatley, Hartshorne, and Red Bird High School, Red Bird.

JERRY ROMAIN
(For The Associated Negro Press)
BY WILLIAM PICKENS
"And a Little Child Shall Lead Them"
If the child is father to the man,
If the child is little nine-year-old Jerry Romain is going to make. He is the little son
of a lawyer on Union Square and the lit-
tle office on Union Square and the lit-
tle lawyer on Union Square and the
another nearly twice his size. Little Jerry almost breathless with in-
jection, but the mother how he had just joined!
It was some organization for young
men to be an officer. The smaller
child was fairly bubbling over with
his anger to her "her" of this junior organization. He
was a little boy. He got it. Bright little dark-haired Jerry,
with intelligence beaming from his whole person, was introduced to
a young boy: "Say, come over here, he
was a little boy."
Then we had a talk, and I learned that she was a teacher in white America will do well to learn from Jerry; that the unspoiled instincts of a little child are really set in place; that she is an always learning from children; that she was a teacher who gave me proof in five minutes and gave me proof in five minutes for "race" in children. When Helga for the first time saw a black man, although she was almost an infidel of curiosity; there was just a black
Of course, Jerry is being abetted by raising him: the son of Rose Fonker, he is the man who drew Carnegie and his millionaire collection of the 20th century at the Trakeger Institute, the white people in Atlanta staged a queen in the museum led by Carnegie was ascending the ranks to come to Mrs. Stokes that the colored people of Atlanta, although they were about a think of the population were not, led by Carnegie to borrow a book, Rose Ponster Stokes took the ground around and refashioned it, and banquet. Instead, she went out and wept at the thought of this enormous man and he has been fighting for and with her untartly from her millionaire's estate and has been fighting for and with her blame her? Long life to Jerry!
Whites Take Lead
Stealing Chickens
Winston-Salem, N. C.—(ANP)—Judge Thomas Watson of municipal court, threw a bombball into the realm of "Southern buffoonery" and fact that white folks had taken the lead in chicken stealing, according to the records of cases tried in his court. The judge, "there will have to be a white man instead of a Negro in the chicken chilling cartoons and stories."
Washington, D. C. (ANP)—The first resolve I made when I accepted this position was that I would not be in the kitchen until 11:30 when the velvet ropes which harb the public from the great dining room are let down and hundreds of people surge to the tables, severity five colored waitresses each with a large tray of food carefully manicured and every hair in place under a neat white cap come flying from the other end of the room and their food is ready.”
The chef, who was cooking the dinner on the kitchen floor maintained by Woodford and Letchup, one of the owners of the restaurant, Mrs. Garfion, also color coded completed menus all over his face, was explaining to the delegates to the industrial section of the National Association of Colored Women, how and maintained his personal space.
Mr. Garrison, formerly a caterer, had served many wealthy eastern cities, including New York and Atlantic City before securing her present place. "Ability and concern are essential to a nurse," he said. "I always wanted to be a nurse, but every time I sought training I was determined that if I must be a coach, I be the best. The profession has won for me competence, travel, and acquaintance and contact which I value.

Woman named statue at the hospital that she had lighted a cigarette with a lighter given her by Katelyn Anderson after while smoking. She was under arrest for the alleged theft of a Manchester Avenue staircase.
National Motors Association Will Invade Texas Soon
Nashville, Tenn.—(ANP) The National Motors Association of this city, which plans an early in-coming car show, is automobiles association filling such a long felt need, and the association is rapidly gaining high favor in the six states in which it now operates in the Eastern portion of the country.
The association's operations are now accepting western and its inner-city areas in the invasion of Texas and California and the Pacific Coast, the latter head-quarters. The association will, nonetheless, be located at Los Angeles, but just what city in the Lone Star State will be selected to control city operations has not been selected.
As is generally well known throughout the country, the National Motors Assurance Association is strictly a racial organization which purposes to look after the economic traveling and general well-being of colored motorists all over America, so that its members are now receiving generous discounts on gas and oil, free road service on tires and batteries, free towing, free monthly inspection privilege and legal aid.
They are also given an artistic automobile emblem which is recognized by authorized servicing concerns, a recommendation and identification traveling card which also carries a traffic violation appearance bond, the National Motors special automobile and travel accident policy carrying a maximum value of $15,000 and free subscription to the National Motor's Register, the organ of the National Motors Assurance Association, giving roads, routes, stopping places and informative news.
The association was first chartered in the state of Tennessee and its

TOUGHING PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC:
Of True Confidence
1. God's Message of Comfort (v. 1, 2).
It was addressed to laishin and his successors in office (v. 1).
His name, was to make known the very heart of God to the people who were in great need of comfort. They were in a stramine land, in cipherity because of their God—the breaking of God—the breaking of their covenant with Him—His favor was about to return.
The mutual relation of God and His people (v. 1).
This is expressed in the phrases "my people" and "your God." The believer belongs to God, and it is to be thus related to Him. Observe, this was said concerning a people who had stained and backslidken.
In spite of their gross impulses, their pardon was declared. The receiving of double at the Lords hands does not constitute an infliction of punishment, but that the divine pardon pardoned the guilt. The pardon of the sainthood blessing their blessing was not through their own merit, but was to be realized through the sainthood of Jebahov. The Preparation Required (v. 3.3).
In order to secure the salvation of the vicarious offering of Jebahov, it was necessary that certain preparation should be made. Observers, it was necessary that certain address (v. 3). This voice was that of John the Baptist, and actually was heard at the time of the coming of Jesus Christ
2. Prepare ye the way of the Lord. (c. 31) It was the custom on state account of the king or ruler and make preparation for his coming. This preparation consisted of the actual depressions of the crown and the straightening of crooked places, so that the monarch could see the crown in its natural motion in its moral bearing, the meaning in preparation for the coming of the Lord into the hearts and lives of the people. The glory of pride and selfish ambition, and the straightening of the crooked and sinful hearts. 3. The glory of the Lord revealed (v. 5). There is proper preparation of heart, the Lord will enter, and His glory will be revealed in the life. It primarily refers to the manifestation of the shrine glory in the person of the Lord.
III. The Friary of Man in Contrast With God's Word (v. 6-8).
"All flesh is grass and earth is power of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, because the Spirit of the Lord is strong. Say to the Lord, the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God shall stand forever." Just as the blunt of the sword destroys the crops, so everything loved and prized by the natural man destroys the God of God's judgment, but His Word shall stand forever. The Word of God abides from age to age with perseverance and triumph, and a mature triumph should steady us because no matter through what stress we go, the Lord comes there will be victory.
The Lord God Coming to Zion (v. 91-11).
1. Behold Your God. (v. 9).
When He comes to Zion there will be no need of Ear. This blessed truth can be proclaimed along to the clerics (v. 10). 2. The Lord God will come with a strong hand (v. 10). The word is in the coming of Jesus Christ in power and great glory to establish His blessed rule over the earth. Righteousness can cope only with the Messianic rule. 3. He shalt feed his flock like a shepherd (v. 10). The Shepherd will search out and provide for His offs.
Always Content
We shall be made truly wise if we be made content; content, too, not only with what we understand, but content with what we do not understand, so that we legals call, and rightly, faith in God—Charles Kingley.
That We May Read Aright
God sometimes washes the eyes of his children with tears in order that they may read aright his providences and his commandments—L. T. Cler,
The habit of looking on the bright side and making the best of things, in itself a fortune, is what makes a website such a website that has this asset. ST.LOUIS WHITES SEEK TO STOP ERECTION OF COLORED HOSPITAL; RESTRAINING ORDER IS SOUGHT
St. Louis, Mo.—(ANP)—Another move to prevent the erection of the new City Hospital for Negroes at Goode Avenue and Whittier Street, will be undertaken by opponents of the project, this time through injunction proceedings in the circuit court against the city. According to Charles P. Conner, attorney, who was authorized to file a suit last Saturday, against Mayor Miller, City Treasurer Buechner, President of the Board of Public Service Kisey and the city, the legality of all actions taken by the city officials so far will be attacked.
Cormer, who is the counsel for the commission of the Chouteau-Lindell Improvement Association, asserted that nineteen other so-called white civic organizations this opposition is readily interpreted by colored citizens who say that the spending of large amounts from the bond funds for the erection of a Ne-Hospital at Goode Avenue and Whittier Street would be only the opening wedge to expand large sums for other purposes affirmed in the land issue ordinances.
A Concested Plan
In the petition to be presented to the petition for those bringing the action of Harry Harvey for the construction of the Chouteau-Lindell Improvement Association, it is set forth proposal No. 107, which requires 50,000 be used for the acquisition of land and the construction of additional facilities for the acquiring of tenants and the indigent tubercular, insano, feeble-minded, infirm and sick patients. Mayor Miller's utterance, taken from the city records, has been affirmed by the city officials. Mayor Miller's Victims Attack

This provision has been twisted to serve the purpose of the element of the bond hospital. An item of the $8,700,000 bond issue, approved by voters in 2005, was forged for the erection of a new hospital for Negroes at a cost of $1,800,000. The opposition claim that proposition 1 must be interpreted as meaning there may be additions to existing institution provisions. No proposition 2 must be erected under the bond issue provisions. It is pointed out the hospital and Whittier Street, would be a great

Dr. Hope was unanimously invited to become president of Atlanta University, with the understanding that for the present he might, in response to the insistence of the Morehouse board of trustees, remain as president of Morehouse College to complete the present endowment campaign and the plans for strengthening the college growing out of the campaign. Dr. Hope has the matter under advice.
President Myron W. Adams, whose resignation has been pending for over a year, will continue in the presidency of Atlanta University until the 30th of June. By that date he will have completed forty years in the service of the university, as a teacher for seven years and as an executive for the remaining thirty-three years.
The work of Morehouse College and Spelman College will continue as at present. Each institution retains its own board of trustees and its own management. With their representation on the board of Atlanta University, all three institutions will throw their strength and influence into the development of a strong graduate school which will give Negro students opportunities for graduate study which have not before been available in the South. With the three groups working vigorously together, Atlanta will become a center of unsurpassed importance in the education of Negroes.

This opposition is usually interpreted by colored citizens, who say that the mayor had refused to sign a 're release' bill, which would have allowed the hospital unless it was evicted adjacent to an institution for 'whites only' or allowed a clinical care for white medical students. It was before the citium supervisory (bond issue committee), it is said the mayor of St. Louis was the first to create unfavorable sentiment against our people and to defeat the expressive mayor, taken from city records, names the mayor.
Mayer's Vicious Attack
"There has been a bill passed for a new street named Avenue and Whistler Street. The records of the colored people who are to be taken to the hospital are a site adjacent the white institution is a much closer place than the one where they come into this world from Negroes are symphilic. Yet, some of the people in the hospital where they say, but, I don't think we should spend bond利息, someone who knows something about it. What we take away from this street is a place away from the white people also."
WOMEN PRESENT PLEA TO HOOVER AT RECENT MEET
Washington, D. C.—(ANP)—Pointing out the crying need for better training for Negro women if they are to meet the industrial demands of the day and urging the establishment of vocational and trade schools by boards of education particularly in colored centers, a national conference of the leaders in the industrial department of the National Association of Colored Women climaxed its two-day session April 6, by calling on President Hoover and presenting an appeal to the chief executive and to the secretary of agriculture that Negro farmers be given full participation in the benefits of farm relief.
The conference which called together territorial directors from five regions with Mrs. M. Mossell Griffin of Philadelphia as chairman, after listening to reports of the gains and losses being made by colored women throughout the country in the field of industry, in its findings urged the appointment of counsellors and placement workers who would be in position to advise Negro women workers because they understand the great needs, thereby lessening the dangers of exploitation. They went on record as opposing what they termed an attempt to "jim-crow" the U.S. Women's Bureau by a "group of aggressive Negro women" and recommended the opening of model training centers throughout the country.
Such a center is being established in Washington where a representative for the country. It will be located at 13 C Street. The center is of the government of the district district, of the hotel, of five hundred colored girls are employed in attendance on the hotel, and five hundred colored girls are trained in the war for its women workers.
The meeting was addressed by Mrs. Merrill, director of the women's bureau, department of labor; by Karl Phillips, coordinator in the same department, president of the district federation; Miss Evelyn Reynolds of the women bureau; and Mrs. Mimie Scott, executive secretary, "Organization and How To Women." "Why the National Association Is Advocating Open Industrial Colored Workers" and "Why Colored Women Should Join the Union" were topics discussed. She gave a survey, and Mrs. Griffin, "conditions which are existing among our workers in a number of cities," and urged cooperation with our organizations to cooperate with us. A number of appointments by government of their states at our request, Mrs. Jennie Ross being named by government of Maryland by the mayor of Philadelphia.
We are gratified at the possibilities before our training center. Mrs. Henderson, the leading social light of Washington, has agreed to open her home along with several of her friends, to our district delegates for inspection, notations, and observations. We hope to create a new interest in colored employees.
The delegation called on the president on visitors' day, leaving their written appeal in behalf of the farmers with them.

COLORED CONGRESSMAN SEATED
With the convening of the special session of the United States congress, which got under way at the national capital Monday, a new epoch was marked in the life of the American Negro, particularly of the North.
For the first time in the history of the colored brother north of the Mason and Dixon line, a member of the race is sitting in the lower house of congress; and what is more, Congressman Oscar DePriest, representing the First Congressional District of Illinois (the so-called "silk stocking" district represented in the national law-making body for several years by the A.I.C. G. Mendon) was seated without any contest or controversy.
When the charges of election fraud, preferred against Mr. DePriest last summer in Chicago, were recommended dismissed last week by the state of Illinois, it was generally agreed that no other reason could be raised by congress to refuse the colored son his seat in congress, and thus Mr. DePriest is now Congressman DePriest.
It has been about twenty-eight years since a colored man has sat in the halls of congress as a representative of a congressional district. George White of North Carolina being the "last of the Mohicans."
Oddly enough, while Congreasman DePriest was sent to congress from a Northern district, he is a product of the South, being a native of Alabama and removing to Chicago several years ago to follow his painting vocation.
Instead of Negroes in other congressional districts, they have real voting strength and power, standing supinely and permitting other races to represent them in the congressional legislature by voting. The congressional sample of the black fraternals, and select and elect a member of their own race to be their spokesman where it will count most.
The Negro race must not expect that Congressman DePriest can effect any great reformations or "move heaven and earth" in the cause of his race; for while he is a Negro, he is only a congressman from one congressional area and his first duty is to his district.
Furthermore, it must also be borne in mind that Congressman DePriest is the only member of his race in congress, and, being in such a hopeless minority, it is both physically and politically impossible for him to do all the things which some of our people are likely to expect of and from him.
Thus far, aside from the prejudicial objections of a few Southern congressmen, who opposed the location of Congressman DePriest's congressional office in close proximity to theirs, the Illinois colored solon has been received by congress in the manner becoming his national office and lofty station; and The Informer takes this occasion to congratulate Congressman DePriest upon his political achievement and to commend the United States house of representatives for the reception accorded this national solon of Negro parentage.
After all, friends, conditions are showing marked signs of improvement in this country as they relate to the Negro race, and the thing for us to do is to do is to remember these words from Longfellow and govern ourselves accordingly:
PYTHIAN PROGRESS PORTRAYED
The recent financial statement made public by the Colored Knights of Pythias of Texas and Court of Calanthe, headed by W. Willis of Dallas and Mrs. F. K. McPherson of Gainesville, respectively, reflects the healthy condition of the order and protrays phenomenal progress in the realm of fraternal insurance by this Texas order.
In 1929, the total assets of the Pythians were $850, 614.32 in compris with $804,608.50 on the same date in 1928, revealing a gain during one year of $45,805.82.
As of March 1, 1929, the Calantheans had assets of $417,476.85, while on the same date last year they had $362,777.25, showing a gain during the 12-month period of $45,699.70.
The combined assets of the Pythians and Calantheans of Texas, as of March 1, 1929, were $1,267,851.27, while on March 1, 1928, these assets amounted to $1,167,385.75, indicating a gain of $100,505.52 during the period of one year.
The marvelous and unprecedented growth of the Pythian state in this state, under the astute, able and wise leadership of Mr. Willis, reads like some mythological story; for when he became grand chancellor of Texas, the Texas fraternal wealth bankrupt and had to negotiate an insufficient money to hold the annual grand lodge; while death claims often had to wait for months before the endowment department could liquidate them.
Today the order boosts of assets in excess of one and one-quarter million dollars, and the interest on mortgage loans, bonds, etc.,

takes care of the salaries of all grand lodge officers, and some to spare; while all death claims, unless affected by minor disabilities or some other legal causes, are paid promptly upon receipt of proofs of death.
The policies have been increased, and policies are now available ranging from $300 to $1,000.
Because of his business-like administration of Pythian affairs in Texas and his able leadership, Pythians throughout the whole jurisdiction are anxious to see Mr. Willis elevated to the head of the order, and already a movement has gained much momentum to place him in the field as a candidate for the supreme chancellor of the order; and if the Texas fraternal wizard consents to become a candidate at the supreme lodge at Indianapolis, Ind., durdane will be elected titular head of the Pythian fraternity of the world.
Not because of his geographical residence or section habitat, but rather because of his ability to direct and administer affairs of a mammoth corporation. The Informer regards Mr. Willis as the most available man in the Pythian order to assume supreme reins at this time; and this paper believes that the supreme lodge will be able to direct or fail to place this outstanding and eminent fraternalist and business man at the head of the order at the Indianapolis meeting.
DOCTORS AND PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
The expulsion of an eminent white physician from membership in the Chicago Medical Society and the resignation of another outstanding medico, who could not harmonize his professional ideas with those of the medical body, have lended to bring more to the public fore, the question of "professional ethics." Really, some of the doctors are rather amusing on this question of "ethics," and we have often observed that most doctors regard other doctors "metical" when the latter seem to be making too much headway by informing the people along medical lines and rendering a type of service that the people need and appreciate. The Windy City medical society expelled this eminent physician because he was connected with a public health institute which advertises heavily and was organized by a group of rich and prominent Chicago business men to combat a group of diseases constituting a social problem, and to provide medical treatment to persons of limited means. It is generally agreed today that only two classes of Americans can properly deal with medical treatment for the rich who are able to pay for the service, and the poor who have such service provided for them by various welfare agencies and philanthropic organizations and individuals. Now, because this noted Chicago doctor held to the opinion that a public health movement was worthy and that the "medical profession must quickly bring down the inexcessible high costs of medical care" his highly "ethical" brothers brand him as being "professional," and forthwith bash him to the region of the "metical," which, to our lay mind, is a mark of distinction and badge of honor.
The Informer believes in ethics in any profession, but it appears to this paper that professional ethics among the medical fraternity, both white and black, need to be revised, revamped and standardized.
James A. Jackson, business specialist in charge of the Small Business Unit of the Department of Commerce, and who will represent this part of the government at the Durham Fact-Finding Conference, April 16-19, left Washington last week to deliver addresses at a number of North Carolina colleges prior to going to Durham for the conference. Before returning to his office in the department, he will also attend the convention of the National Negro Insurance Association at Little Rock Arkansas; spend a week conducting a series of contacts with trade business and domestic commerce organizations in Kansas City, Mo., and be the speaker at a professional and business meeting sponsored by the Empire Finance Company and other Cincinnati concerns.
His special objective on the tour is to awaken interest in the business aids to the smaller business interests of the country that are available from the Department of Commerce. Mr. Jackson last year contacted with more than 80 national and local organizations. He anticipates adding greatly to this list during the current year; and will repeat visits to several of the more important national business organizations.

And here the Quill Club is again. It has added to its number, and we learn from the dedication that death has claimed one of the members—A. Alguiné Greene. With dry humor or it publishes excerpts from the comments on its last appearance. Eugene Gordon has again done a careful piece of editing. He has also written an article, "Negro Fictitious in America," a review of Negro short story writers and novelists.
This is particularly timely because the Quill contains a number of interesting short stories. None measures up to the standard which Mr. Gordon has set, with the possible exception of Mrs. Ralley's "Maria Peters." This was not intended to be a short story, but a brief biography. It seems the irony of fate that it should more nearly resemble one of De Maupassant's perfect tales than any of the others which aimed at the perfection of a difficult art.
The poetry in interesting. It shows which for a white run-riddle towards form and precision. Judging from her performance, the dedication of the volume was merited. Joan Fainner's "Flum丹" deserves better at the hands of the critics than it has received. She is a master of the critics, who in their meticulous rank to handle every hand weave by a skill exhibited alone. A exhibition was overheld therefore just last grime disguised in subtle now. Now "Flum丹" is not a run-ride, but a good story, a good story, well and skillfully woven, so that the long arm of a grime artist can be happy ending in not too great a strain upon one credibility. It is a good story, and a good story, moved. "Three in Confidence," she has much her story to march to in the final form of scenic events, and handling of her enduring effect.
Some may choose to think the charm of the story lies in the study of the near-white girl who wishes to paste for white and deem so with some modernity of success. Critics of the other race naturally hail the look as a searching study of that phase of American life. But to me the charm of the book lies in its poignant analysis of the commonness of human relations. Only one who has lived in big cities; made friends and lost them; drifted into relations and out of them; touched lives at queer angles, and forgotten them; suffered loneliness and heartache at the emptiness of life and the non-understanding of others could paint so clear and true a picture of a lonely girl. The tragedy in Angelina's life was not race, but her own ultimate shallowness which never let her get to realities. It just was not there; she was as incapable of real living as an undeveloped child. It is in the study of thin shallow seals, and the effect of the life which brushed her by that the real artistry of "Film Bun" lies. The title is interesting. "To market, to market, To buy a Film Bun; Home again, home again; Market is done." And so Angels go to market, buys the film bun, and goes home again when the market is done, and she finds that the bun, after all, was not worth going after.
It is rather interesting to select individuals and fit well-known names to their highly disciplined personalities. Some individuals might squirm at being told what to do, perhaps it is the thing to do. Some individuals might squirm at being told what to do, perhaps it is the thing to do. Indian India, especially when everyone can tack the right name onto their head, is to be hoped that Mim Funct will write other books. She has written several which control final situations. This was the greatest weakness of Mim Funct's book, "Bau" is such a distinct and definite advance over its predecessor that almost everyone looks forward to her next novel.

That care-free manner was always with Ruby Withers, augmented with a stark loveliness that eclipsed the down-right shabbiness of her clothes.
"Do you like it, Ruby?" asked the white-coated figure behind the counter. "It's a new brand I'm trying out, so tell me if it meets the requirements."
"It's fine and I'm not joking," confirmed the girl, whirling around on the stool with each spoonful of cream.
"Of course it should be," said Douglas Hayes. "Didn't I serve it?"
"Oh, I hadn't thought of that," laughed the girl. "But what has your serving it got to do with it?"
"Girl, we don't keep anything except good things here," he replied, leaning on the counter before her.

"Oh, you go on, Sam Thomas," scoffed Hayes in pretended disgust.
"I had just as well not be married," put in Ruby, opening her purse to pay for the cream. "I hardly know that I ever had a husband."
"What, don't you know where he is?" pursued Sam Thomas, brushing cigar ashes from his overalls.
"No, and I don't care," she answered with that care-free air.

said Ruby. "Mr. Thomas has started and Mommer is laying me out right now I know."
"Oh, sure!" and Hayes made a rush for the cash register.
Receiving her change, Ruby jumped down from the stool, patted her pretty, heavy, black hair, and went out into the late spring afternoon.

Mrs. Russell was eighty years of age and still carried, no doubt, in the eyes of Georgia, the power to cast spells that caused anything from the most phonological success to the most horrible deaths.
When Mrs. Russell's body was found the throat was cut. A man who had come to her mysteries abode to have his future read discovered her body lying in a pool of blood, amid several "conjurer" voodoo boxes, vials, and a long petticoat and a colour. But when committed, strange, raribit tails and horridness, charms, raribit tails and horridness, were all located in the secret archives of the dead "charm" expert.
It is said that she gained considerable fame from tracing the course of one's life from the cradle to the grave. It is repaid that a person's next physician in Georgia had the most physical power to find what were his prospects. Not only did the "charm" expert predict with uneasy accuracy the future of this physician, but she told him his part with so much realism and in so great detail that the good doctor shouldered and included in his fee to her a liberal amount to insure his undisturbed freedom. Among her other ralours
fame was an ability to cast a "spell" in everything. From the early village of human beings to the latter line on shingles.

AMORY, West Africa conqueror, was born at Blesandougou in the Valley of the Niger in 1836. He entered France for eighteen years with such great skill that the French commanders out of sheer admiration for his genius dubbed him "The Black Napoleon of the Sudan."
Among these French commanders were the best who won great distinction in the last war, like Marshal Joffre and Gen. fallent.
Argin and again Samory defeated the forces sent against him, and several times France was compelled to make t Applications with him.
Samory, like many other great men, was the only man of the highest circumstances. He was the son of a poor black merchant and a female slave. One day a neighboring tribe swooped down on Ramory's tribe, killing many and capturing others.
SAMORY TAKEN CAPTIVE
Among the latter was Samory, who, however, had his own life. But a bold and ambitious man even though a slave, does not remain down. Besides Samory was a giant in strength and size. No one in all West Africa could throw a spear with such unerring skill as he. At eighteen he escaped and killed his pursuers, went to the King of Torendo and offered him his service.
The king, struck by his splendid physique and military bearing, at once made him as one of his body-guard.
Samory's success with his new patron did not end there. He at once set about learning Arabic and soon after rose to the rank of coumcler. Continuing his upward career he went on until he stood best to the king.
Then one day he quarrelled with the king and decided to return to his country. He was now wealthy, and soon after his arrival there was named chief of his tribe.

The Story of an African Slave Who Built Two Empires: Was Called Samory, the Conqueror, Because of Great Military Skill and Power
WARS WITH FRANCE
famous war. But he was to meet an obedient man, who had encountered. Quite unknown to him his empire of Guas-souls had changed hands England, Belgium, Germany and Portugal sitting in conference, had awarded his lands to France.
He was the head of the town of Kenjera, in the Upper Niger. A black sergeant in French uniform came to his with an order from the French commander to discentin the siege. Assured at the man's importance, Samory ordered him seized and held for torture.
He was back to camp. The prestige of France had to be upheld, and then began a war with Samory that lasted until 1858.
Armed with the latest weapons the French started after Samory. When they arrived at Kenjera, however, he had already captured it, and was in charge of the war. He was in the back of the French in a favorable spot, he attacked them.
WINS GREAT BATTLE
The battle lasted over a week. In the first three days the French, armed with the latest artillery, were victorious. But when their ammunition was expended, Samory attacked them with his spears and forced them to retreat.
Samory's warriors had only a few modern rifles that he had got by way of Liberia and Sierra Leone.
For the next five years the war went on, which success now on Samory's side, now on that of the French army. The war is still in the upper hand. France's ambition was to keep a straight overland route from the French Congo through her North African自治区 to France, and Samory sweeping on the cor-vain, made this impossible. France finally asked a treaty with him, which was signed in 1858. His war is now over.
Another treaty followed in 1857. By this treaty Ramsey was given all the territory on the left bank of the Niger. But no sooner was the treaty concluded than the French began to testify the right bank of the river.
INCITES CHIEFS
His suspicions are formed. Ramsey began to incite the native chiefs to rebel, and after another treaty had been made, war broke out again in 1851. The French now decided to attack him in force. Defeating all the other chiefs, the French met up

edam, with Ramsey at Kockura.
"Samsy's force consisted of 20,000 faith-under men armed with spears, 16,000 rifles and two small canons, as well as a gun and a small sword."
The French, around with modern artillery, regained him, and drove him from his capital, Bissandcogou. He was, however, far from being able to fight in the face of a French army, and again the French and all were compelled to make a treaty as he quite was with him.
The agreement he was permitted to continue his empire to ward the south, whether he went, sinking money, new coquets and building a new enclave. Some time after he was at aed, he was called to the town, and noted Capt. Marchand, narrowly en-caped capture at his hand, but
In spite of the treaty Ramsey was never satisfied at seeing the white army in the way he was, and once more he descended on him, and again after a long struggle he again was forced to retreat with his army of 25,600 men. Accompanying him were 120,600 women, children and cap-
When the French had now decided to die, he was left his power once for all. They pressed the fight and for the next year the struggle lasted with very great strength the greater part of the time.
But in this also he showed his skill. One of his opponents, Comte de Lartigue, says in his book: "One cannot help but admire from a military point of view his pre-tension, the minute care with which he was at hand, and the great strength with which he was with what he said he ordered by his generals. Among the latter two of his sons, one of which Ramsey, his
His favorite son, Barmock, was in the meanwhile chained in a hut, and given barely enough food to keep him alive. Karmoko, after being shown a review of the French army in Paris, had been sent back to tell his father what he had seen.
Meeting with his father he told him of the strength of the French army and advised him to surrender, saying he could never hope to overcome a force so great. But Ramory instead of following his advice, made him a prisoner.
“We’re they so strong as you say,” replied the old warrior, “they would not be using their own against us.”
CAPTURED AT PRAYER
But pressed by a superior force one most yield soccer or later. The red came in 1999, brought about as much by domestic strife as by age, and the strength of the enemy. Ramory had 300 wives, and the favorite among them, a very young woman, was accused of infidelity with Barmock.
Threatened with torture by his father, Bornke Mory fed, throwing disorder into the ranks.
In the meantime the French were drawing nearer and nearer. A few days after Bornke Mory's fight, Bornke retired a little way into the woods to read the Koram, as was his daily custom.
While there alone and unarmed, a black seacot in the French army and a white sergeant erget upon him as he knelt at prayer, and made him a prisoner.
But the alarm had been given, his men had rushed to his rescue, and the two rescue the wood facing each other for a last struggle. Worn, however, with fifty-five years of careless warfare Namory, seeing but the useless slaughter of his brave men, gave the sign not to fight.
Led away he was imprisoned in the little village of Nole in the Congo, where he died the following year of consumption at the age of sixty-nine.
GREAT STRATEGIST
Le Grande Encyclopedia (French) says of him in part:
"Samory, great Negro potentate, who disputed for a long time with France for possession of the Bondeau.
"Handsome, of splendid height, very intelligent, very cunning and extremely brave.
"Happily for him he crossed the path of a man from the Sengh to the Niger when France wished to ascend the great river towards its source and to descend toward Timbuco. The war between us and him consoled in 1881-2, and lost until 1885.

Having thus struck very cleverly against Borges-Bordier, Combs, Hubert, Arethard, Bonner, and others, and after having lost his capital, Hissondougas in 1881 he abandoned the Niger which he had depopulated.
“From here he went towards the east in the country of Kong in the region of the rivers. Here he built a new empire from which he was driven by France in 1883.”
Like most great military leaders Ramsey relied almost as much on strategy as on force. He had a method of frightening the enemy that was highly original. With him always was an orchestra of about one hundred pieces composed of drums, cornets, futes, fives, whistles, fomtoms, and other contrivances. During a battle he would set this orchestra to making a din that sounded like the shouting of victorious warriors mitigated with the ergae and cries of the dying and defeated. This scheme never failed to dishearten the enemy who very often could not see all that their own men were doing in the woods.

YITH Mrs. Tippons and Mrs. Hampson once upon a time spent their time in the barn, particularly show in barns all over the town, all of whom were all married. Their husbands and wives had each and every occasion for cooking and doing laundry. And each was included in the fireplace. A little physical therapy either could be done for the house, or for the fireplace for cooking and doing laundry. The homes of any of their children, however, had been sufficiently designed to live for them. But they suddenly demanded to live for someone else, where they lived for where she lived. With the passing of years Mrs. Tippons had the best of next door neighbors. And their lives had become more frequently threatened their doors. Some women will for the future walk without being repaired. So from her wonderful orchard, she sent them to her beautiful farm. They became the best dairy farmers, the oil indulges animated the whole rural community. They had enterprises that neither could cure nor even could count money with their earnings. Even won them many loyal friends. Mrs. Misona's mother, young friend, taught them how to count. Their patterment comes from every woman. Now Mrs. Misona occasionally takes them to a private retreat for pleasure and the relatives just for pleasure and the rest.
Recently Mrs. Tippens underwent an operation. And she had to borrow no money. The widows have money.

We have a letter this week from New Orleans, La, that would have stumped Solomon.
"My Dear Mrs. Jerome, I am a young girl in love with a boy one year older than myself. I love him with all my heart, but he is in love with a girl friend of mine. He loved me once and still holds long concerns with me on love, but that is all. How can I win him back for myself without breaking my girl friend's heart?—An Honest Lover."
Well, I think the answer to this in-how did you lose him in the first place? Did you lose him by being quarrelous? Or by being dull? Or by being flurtations? It must have been one of these faults you had, except it. That will be your first step.

She can do this by making herself good to look at; by keeping her room where she entertains him clean, comfortable and colorful; by showing an interest in his affairs and by not showing a tendency to pry into things which he does not wish her to know. A plain girl who has charm, serenity and liveliness has more chance to win and keep a man than has a raving beauty with a bad temper. The beauty will win his eye for a moment, but not his heart forever. A lot of men, of course, are not worth going to the trouble to win. Dear Sir: I dreamed that I was in Washington, D.C., at a political meeting, sitting beside President and Mrs. Coolidge. Mr. Coolidge said to me: Mrs. Forbes, I understand that you are a very good singer and I would like to hear you sing one of your favorite songs that you liked during the World War. And I told him the name of it, which was entitled "The Rose of No Man's Land." And I thought I had on a beautiful black beaded dress and gunmetal hose, black satin slippers with rhinestone buckles.
"In singing the song I acted it through by looking at the Ied Cross nurses who were there. After I had finished President Coolidge and the nurses gave me so much applause that when I woke up I could still hear them."
"It was Thursday night that I had this dream, and ever since then I always keep that song on my mind—the eborus anyway. Sincerely—Mrs. Sidney A. Forbes, Cleveland, Ohio."

Of a long time, in fact, since the beginning of our "Iblical" knowledge, the question of there once being a flood which covered the entire earth has been increased by fulfilling the authority. To a great number of people the story of the great flood is not for them but for the Israelites of the whole world, however way it goes. However, to the vast majority of folk the flood is said was as much a fact as ££ New-to-usain law of gravitation. This is the majority is usually known as the fundamentalists.

people of Kish built their city on top of the mountain. Nessun's exegesis went to fire. These people similarly to the Old Testament carried in the Book of Genesis, and in the Book of Canaan, were a very hardy sort, since after a long civilization, the Food of 600 BCE civilization. After the Food of 600 BCE, a matureable栈子 of a civilization developed, and cultural development agreed to follow.
The woman who includes St. Joseph's G.F.P. in her daily health program seldom finds that dull headaches, lack of "pep" and quick fatigue ruin her hours of recreation.
For St. Joseph's G.F.P. is more than a mere stimulant! Not only does it soothe ragged nerves and banish fatigue; but it conditions the system, increases vitality and tends to correct the causes of woman's petty ills.
If you are run-down, weak and deficient—finding life and its pleasures dull—you may only need the help of a good tonic to build up energy and strength. Thousands of women who have tried and been benefited by St. Joseph's G.F.P. urge you to try it, too. You can get the big dollar bottle at your dealer.

sily expedition to Mesopotamia. Nevertheless, in spite of all this culture, the civilisation was wicked and illatrous, hence Noah's food.
Professor Langdon, under whose direction and leadership the expedition is being made, stated that the great mound under which the city of Kish was buried contained the remains of the world's oldest civilization. Workers have uncovered the original city at a depth of some 55 feet and the expedition is now busily engaged in deciphering inscriptions on stone tablets found in this afromum which will undoubtedly be found. The remains of the ancient Sumerians. It will be of considerable and sacred interest to see and perhaps touch the potteries and utenials that were in the earth during the time of the venerable Noah's flood. The crude tools of this civilization bear material and tangible witness to the disappointing experiment of the Lord with mankind on earth.
The field of historical research has certainly heightened its popular appeal by unearthing material which tends to support the greatest of books. This latest discovery, besides making the fundamentalists more cocksure of their indomitable faith and beliefs, will throw a bombhell into the camp of the modernist and modernist-like world. It is the fact that Noah's flood and "Jonah inside-the-whale" are myths. The discovery of a few more relics of this moist event, such as the bow and a few broken pieces of Noah's ark will serve to make even more convincing the present scientific findings.
These discoveries by the Field Museum-Oxford expedition are destined to revolutionise both scientific and historical thought.

she pointed it out to him.
What Hayes saw was the usual account of a body being found floating in the bay. He read the item through. In part it read thus:
"The body had been in the water for some time and was beyond recognition. The only possible identification marks was the name Marcus Withers and the label of a Suffolk (Va.) clothing store."
Already in black for her behaved father, Ruby Porter Withers realised herself a widow.
And that was another shock to Ruby's life; but, after it was over, she felt better and freer.
Again else went daily past Hayes' little saloon, occasionally stopping for refreshments.
Hayes now felt more at liberty to offer her aid in her struggle to support the Porter family, and once or twice he broached the subject, but always she refused to listen.
The roads were excellent and the big roadster soon covered the twenty-five miles.
At last he came in sight of the town with its sleepy waterfront and warehouses in the foreground.
A BLOWOUT
Suddenly there was a loud report. With an exclamation of disgust Hayes brought the car to a standstill at the edge of the highway, climbed to the ground, lit a cigaret and then surveyed the wrecked tire.
"A brand-new tire," he muttered, "I must have driven over a thousand razors for it to play out on me like that."
"Master, I thought it was somebody shooting," said a childish voice behind Hayes. He turned that way and beheld a brown archon of about twelve.
Across the field, four other children were making frantic efforts to get to the stranded vehicle.
"Why, hello, Bruce," Hayes smiled to the boy, "Tee, Bruce, I've had bad luck. How's mama?"
"Oh, 'tis you, Mr. Hayes!" Mom is about the same.
Hayes had just realized that the tire had played out near R代's home and these little children were her brothers and sisters. They stood around and watched (Continued on Page 11)

By 1849 the Negroes of Cincinnati, Ohio, had acquired $228,000 worth of real estate. One Negro was worth $4,000, and another who had purchased himself and family for $5,000 a few years prior was worth $1,000. Another Negro paid $4,000 for himself and family, and bought a home worth $500 to $1,000.
Three were $11,451 free Negroes in the United States in 1829 and $19,929 in 1860. At this latter date $1,942 of these were in Maryland, $5,982 in Virginia, $9,462 in North Carolina, $14,467 in Louisiana, $1,131 in the District of Columbia, $6,435 in Kentucky; in short, 258,787 in the whole south.

You will see a few more with the white-brown look and a few more with the light, bright, and attractive. Don't be so late!
For Golden Brown—there are more.
