Sanders Factory The life of an individual who has struggled upwards from obscurity, to success, and always been an interesting theme. There are such individuals in most every community or those who have very many experiences, keeping the everlasting at it, having some definite object to which they burst in the full noon of success. The Rise of Mr. Sanders. The story of the rise of H. L. Sanders is the more remarkable because he is a colored man. With white men it is no easy matter to capitalize upon his intelligence and which to run with success pronounces him an extraordinary individual. Mr. Sanders has been accomplished within the life of one man. No legacies of money can be preserved, and which to run with success knowledge; he is the foundation as well as the superstructure of his com­munity, being can be pointed with pride by all his business, monument of patience, toll, integrity, and to whom the youth of the land belong. There are many persons living today who saw Mr. Sanders wending his way through the streets of Indianapolis to work on his business, which he carried on his arm. These wares were jackets and aprons for waiters, cooks, porters and others in his business in 1888, the success of which has been such as to warrant his moving to larger quarters seven times. His business not far from his present location. Mr. Sanders was seen there in 1889, with power sewing machine, perhaps not dreaming of the big success that was to follow. He points with pride to the effort to stimulate men when they—men who are striving to do business, and which is simple enough, drift and honesty are the terms, the keynote, and which, as he says, are not difficult to accomplish. A visitor of that day, should he return to Indianapolis this day, could fully realize what Mr. Sanders has made, and which the guidance of power sewing machine changed as if magic into twenty-two electricity machines and under the guidance of Mr. Sanders. For without her we are prone to believe that the great stock companies of colored players which pre- and which paves a reader way to the fuller civil existence as taught through the greater governmental principles. Besides these high-powered costly machines, is other equipment in keeping. Among these are two electric cutters and one marking machine. Mr. Sanders does not heart of his wealth, but one can easily reckon that a manufacturing establishment with twenty-two electric and other essential machines, is worth considerable money. His business genius keeps those machines going. This is something to think about. It means traveling salesmen, who scour the country; H. L. SANDERS and the catalogue system, that silent salesman; in order to keep up his *Well ordered place*. One can easily imagine him the mime; but he must keep alive such a life of industry. The payroll of the establishment number of people, who make him the colored man of India, is the greatest employer of colored persons. And fortunately he is so well known that women who need most to be employed, owing to lack of opportunity, are not the number of young men are also employed, making a payroll averaging $1,000 per month ours' out physicians and dentists' office coats, nurses' uniforms, maids' outfits, waiters' and dishwashers' outfits, feurs' and mechanicians' union suits. Edward is his father's rightmost assistant manager. He is courteous and of a splendid turn for that kind of business. He is also his father's business. The other sons are Arthur and Omar. Arthur travels for the house and looks after the retail business. The business is generally used. The daughter Mrs. Cressola Gore, is the head lady of the retail department. The others are Miss Diana Diment, the store manager and cashier; Miss Maud Neilhead, head saleslady; John Lott, cutter and traveling with Lott Harrison, book-keeper; Miss Izora Brooks, shipping clerk. Mr. Sanders is yet active. He gives the establishment general attention as well as the ideal business man. He has not cultivated any peculiar fads or notions. As you see in this section, most plain man, whose pleasure is to serve his community and race. He will be found in all of those better affaires. He is active in church and Y. M. C. A. circles. And, as for making it possible for men and women to have similar equipment, to others he has the list. REV. A. R. GRIGGS IN INDIANAP OLIS—THINKS WELL OF THE CITY. As this is my first visit to your lovely city, I desire to express, through your paper, a few words of appreciation and highly cultivated citizenship served in this beautiful inland city of the middle west. This is my first trip to your city was to attend a secretary's conference of the national Baptist convention, representing a membership of more than 100,000 Indianapolis presents a colored population which, in looks, from the standpoint of a business view, seems to surpass that of any city I have visited anywhere in this country between the two cities. I have served the entire space between the two. Her churches, schools and places of amusement are far in advance of other cities, and have served the general interest in the public. REV. A. R. ATTORNEY W. W. HYDE HAVING SUCCESS Indianapolis is becoming known for its successful colored lawyers. Among these is Attorney W. W. Hye. Not so much has been said of him, perhaps. as has been said of others, but he is a winner just the same, succeeding in doing things and getting things done. In 1903 Mr. Hyde graduated from the Wesleyan College at which time he was president of his class of 12 members. He practiced in his state for two years, during which he was a judge in the Court. He then came to this city, where he was also admitted to practice in the Supreme Court, and of course he was a lawyer. No colored lawyer in the city has had more notable cases than Mr. Hyde. He was acquitted in two cases, succeeding in having one acquitted and the two got second degree. Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He won a specific performance on a contract suit of $1,500 at Louisville. In Chicago he had charge of a probate case for Alice Staten, involving $2,000. In this city he closed the estates of Mattle Hayden and Mary Jane Jacobson, amounting to several thousand dollars. This splendid variety speaks very well for Mattle Hayden, who is, as it is seen, at home in all the departments of the law. When we first sat spellbound under the fine display of stagecraft exhibited by Miss Desmond, we handled one of the principal roles in the production of "Within the Law," played at the Lafayette Theater in this season. Miss Desmond is a lady performer who was endowed with a true artistic ability and a naturalness that topmost pinnacle of her profession. Since her affiliation with the Quality Amusement Players, Miss Desmond has been a regular performer in various rendered portrayals of vastly different types of characters in three cities, Baltimore, and Baltimore. This lady has demonstrated that she possesses the art of acting not only when speaking parts are used, but also when presenting a "master scholar" who is an adept in cramming brief sentences and aphorisms. Miss Desmond, wisdom, Miss Desmond, through the wonderful magic of her style, can convey to her auditors by a shrug of her shoulders what she may later put into words. Almost exactly the wonderful things which she may later put into words, she can no stranger, for Miss Desmond made her first entrance into the theatricals as a soprano who could really sing. In prince-like bubbling-over-with-good-health girl that we met a few years ago in productions ever put together with Catherine One of the hardest working women of the past have ever had the pleasure of shaking hands with is Mrs. Charles H. Anderson. You recall how the colored newspapers of several cities have time after time told you now really ordinary this lady of the stageland is. Among the new candidates who will enter Second, Ward will be Harry Baskin. will be Harry Baskin, the popular Yiddish writer, has resided in Chicago for twenty-two years and has been a borough of Thirty-seventh and State for twelve years in New York. In interview with Mr. Baskin he states that he has equal rights to all. He has no organization behind him and is dependent candidate. His reason for running is that business man who has worked in the cage for twenty-two years and has lived in the neighborhood and seventh and State for twelve years in local interview with Mr. Baskin he states that he equal rights to all. Allen's Improvement Club was royally entertained by Miss Ina O'Bryant Dec. 8. SANTA DRUNK, COLORED MAN ON JOB. HAWKINS DEFEAT SANDERS. ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Larence Hawkins gave Eddie Sanders fifteen pounds of weight and won the decision over the Chicago boy in ten rounds Tuesday night, Dec. 12, at the Future City A. C. This was the semi-nail to Langford-Johnson bout. Hawkins, who tipped the beam at about 117 pounds, is one of the cleverest bantam weights that ever showed or developed in St. Louis and is a very hard hitter. He staggered Sanders time and again with left hooks and right crosses. It looked like Hawkins was about to score the knockout but the Chicago lad managed to weather the storm. It was a good bout from the first to the final round. Larence Hawkins, who looks so much like Leo Johnson that they could be caked with other accords to be caked although Johnson is a lightweight and Hawkins is a bantam. Hawkins has defeated Benny Hall so many times that we have forget the final score. Hall is the lad who gave Patty McCure such a good beating while McCure was in St. Louis claiming the lad's hawk weight championship belt. Hawkins also kayo Kid Sweet last summer. Sanders has fought some good lightweights, such ones as Leo Patterson, Young Gans and Kid Roax of Memphis, so this looks mighty good for Little Hawkins. ANNOUNCEMENT J. S. And it makes you run back to that period when there were indeed peace and good will in your life. The period of early childhood is, above all other periods, the happiest in a life. The Highway Man has visions now of those days when at Yuletide above the large open fireplace, hanging from the mantel there was a stocking. Marie Selika (Mrs. Sampson Williams) has retired from active work as a singer and is teaching music in New York City. Walker Thompson, known as the "matinee idol," was for many years the "straight man" with the team of Simms and Thompson. Anita Bush, the "mother" of the present dramatic renaissance, is to head a company of her own, supported by a group of well-known players. The Whitman Sisters and the Griffin State Sisters all signed the "sister teams" in the country and are acknowledged "box-office attractions." Quite a number of usually well-posted Americans are not aware that DeKoven Thompson, the famous composer of "If I Forget," is a colored man. Lucien Lenoir (Rachel Walker), after a long residence in Paris and London, is now in Cleveland in Cincinnati, Ohio. She fills occasional concert engagements. Sissieretta Jones ("Black Patti"), was discovered by the late Manager J. C. Bergen in the choir of an A. M. E. church in Providence, R. I., where she was leading soprano. Samuel H. Gray, a Baltimoreone, one of the most successful of the florists, is to branch out as a full-fledged manager next year. He knows the business from the ground up. Will A. Cooke, principal comedian of the Quality forces, is an Indianapolis product, and was at one time stage manager and fun-maker in chief of the Black Patti Troubadours. Abbie Mitchell received her initial training in music at the hands of the composer, from whom she learns much in facial play, is Clara Kimball Young. Tom Brown studied the art of character portraiture for six years under that master mind Henry Lee. He has been a professor in Europe and Australia, doing a protean act. S. H. Dudley originated in Texas and began the late Ernest Hogan as star comedian of "The Smart Set," in which line of work he rose rapidly to the top of the profession. Mme. Mayme Calloway-Byron, the former primate comma, was the vocalist after an absence of several years in Europe. She was one of the originals of Isham's "Oriental America." Marie Lucas, the accomplished musical director of the Quality Amusement Park, was the vocalist late the late Sam Lucas, long the dean of the colored theatrical profession. Sam Gardner of "The Smart Set" made his first appearance on the stage as a baby in arms, being carried by an "Eliza Harris" in his "Uncle Tom's Cabin" aggregations. Rev. Charles Satchlec Morris, the eloquent pastor of a Norfolk, Va. Baptist church, was once a Shakepearian priest, who taught and has appeared in the West in "Hamlet," "Richard III" and "Othello." Clarence E. Muse is a graduate of the law department of the University or Pennsylvania, and is winning laurels, both as a heavy and as a portrayer of the Quality Amusement Corporation. Inzq Clough, also a star member of Iszq's Oriental America" trouple, is a New Englander by birth, and is a dramatic soprano as well as a character actress. She has been compared in method to Mrs. Leslie Carter. * Salem Tutt Whitney started out as a tenor but later acquired a bass voice and became known professionally as "The Black Whitney." The "Whitney" stuck to him so tight that he had to add it to his original family surname, "Tutt." Lloyd G. Gibbs, the popular tenor, who used to sing with Black Fatti, Mimi Flower and other prima donnas, is now playing a variety of singing and character roles with the Quality Amusement Corporation, which rediscovered him in Baltimore. Sidney Kirkpatrick got his start as interlocutor and soloist with a promo band in the West. He is now with the Quality Corporation, leading in robust character parts and making a brilliant record as a legitimate actor. He is not less successful as a singer. "BABY," Townsend, playing serious, coercive roles, with ease, is a playwright of class, a skilled stage manager, a talented bass singer, and is a recognized authority on the history of the stage and personally accented with all of the stars of both races.
