The H. L. Sanders Factory
The life of an individual who has struggled upwards from obscurity, to success, and always been an interesting theme. There are such individuals in most every community or those who have very many experiences, keeping the everlasting at it, having some definite object to which they burst in the full noon of success.
The Rise of Mr. Sanders.
The story of the rise of H. L. Sanders is the more remarkable because he is a colored man. With white men it is no easy matter to capitalize upon his intelligence and which to run with success pronounces him an extraordinary individual. Mr. Sanders has been accomplished within the life of one man. No legacies of money can be preserved, and which to run with success knowledge; he is the foundation as well as the superstructure of his community, being can be pointed with pride by all his business, monument of patience, toll, integrity, and to whom the youth of the land belong. There are many persons living today who saw Mr. Sanders wending his way through the streets of Indianapolis to work on his business, which he carried on his arm. These wares were jackets and aprons for waiters, cooks, porters and others in his business in 1888, the success of which has been such as to warrant his moving to larger quarters seven times. His business not far from his present location. Mr. Sanders was seen there in 1889, with power sewing machine, perhaps not dreaming of the big success that was to follow. He points with pride to the effort to stimulate men when they—men who are striving to do business, and which is simple enough, drift and honesty are the terms, the keynote, and which, as he says, are not difficult to accomplish. A visitor of that day, should he return to Indianapolis this day, could fully realize what Mr. Sanders has made, and which the guidance of power sewing machine changed as if magic into twenty-two electricity machines and under the guidance of Mr. Sanders.
The whir and hum of this workshop please emulate emotions in the imagination of emotion. His evidence of the coming of equal industrial opportunity, similar opportunity,

More to Miss Anita Bush than to any other individual belongs the credit for the present prosperity in colored thea-tricals. For without her we are prone to believe that the great stock companies of colored players which pre-
and which paves a reader way to the fuller civil existence as taught through the greater governmental principles. Besides these high-powered costly machines, is other equipment in keeping. Among these are two electric cutters and one marking machine. Mr. Sanders does not heart of his wealth, but one can easily reckon that a manufacturing establishment with twenty-two electric and other essential machines, is worth considerable money. His business genius keeps those machines going. This is something to think about. It means traveling salesmen, who scour the country;

and the catalogue system, that silent salesman; in order to keep up his *Well ordered place*. One can easily imagine him the mime; but he must keep alive such a life of industry. The payroll of the establishment number of people, who make him the colored man of India, is the greatest employer of colored persons. And fortunately he is so well known that women who need most to be employed, owing to lack of opportunity, are not the number of young men are also employed, making a payroll averaging

The Assistants.
Mr. Sanders is fortunate in having three sons and one daughter among his family. Edward is his father's rightmost assistant manager. He is courteous and of a splendid turn for that kind of business. He is also his father's business. The other sons are Arthur and Omar. Arthur travels for the house and looks after the retail business. The business is generally used. The daughter Mrs. Cressola Gore, is the head lady of the retail department. The others are Miss Diana Diment, the store manager and cashier; Miss Maud Neilhead, head saleslady; John Lott, cutter and traveling with Lott Harrison, book-keeper; Miss Izora Brooks, shipping clerk.
Mr. Sanders is yet active. He gives the establishment general attention as well as the ideal business man. He has not cultivated any peculiar fads or notions. As you see in this section, most plain man, whose pleasure is to serve his community and race. He will be found in all of those better affaires. He is active in church and Y. M. C. A. circles. And, as for making it possible for men and women to have similar equipment, to others he has the list.
REV. A. R. GRIGGS IN INDIANAP OLIS—THINKS WELL OF THE CITY.
As this is my first visit to your lovely city, I desire to express, through your paper, a few words of appreciation and highly cultivated citizenship served in this beautiful inland city of the middle west.
This is my first trip to your city was to attend a secretary's conference of the national Baptist convention, representing a membership of more than 100,000 Indianapolis presents a colored population which, in looks, from the standpoint of a business view, seems to surpass that of any city I have visited anywhere in this country between the two cities. I have served the entire space between the two.
Her churches, schools and places of amusement are far in advance of other cities, and have served the general interest in the public.
REV. A. R. GRIGGS.
DALLAS, TEXAS.
Your Y. M. C. A. building is one evidence of this fact. I wish to compliment the leaders of this institution for their windows we only in bringing about such an enterprise, but the splendid way in which they manage the affairs for the good of all the people, young and old for their religious, social and educational welfare.
I wish to thank your enterprising ministers of the gospel for the many courtesies extended.
The seven boards represented in your college, one of our many every religious and educational institutions for the advancement of the race. As secretary of the Educational Board, I am a member of the 200 schools and colleges, of every grade, with a teaching force of 1,250 students. I am a member of intellectual and spiritual welfare more than 25,000 students. I work as fast as possible and help them to correlate their interests so as to lessen much wasted energy. The University of Birmingham Training School is growing nicely, as we have more than 70 preachers enrolled, with more than 400 matriculated for the study of mission.

ATTORNEY W. W. HYDE
HAVING SUCCESS
Indianapolis is becoming known for its successful colored lawyers. Among these is Attorney W. W. Hye. Not so much has been said of him, perhaps.
as has been said of others, but he is a winner just the same, succeeding in
doing things and getting things done. In 1903 Mr. Hyde graduated from the Wesleyan College at which time he was president of his class of 12 members. He practiced in his state for two years, during which he was a judge in the Court. He then came to this city, where he was also admitted to practice in the Supreme Court, and of course he was a lawyer. No colored lawyer in the city has had more notable cases than Mr. Hyde. He was acquitted in two cases, succeeding in having one acquitted and the two got second degree. Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Through him the wife of Riley Roberts got a divorce and $1,250 to mention including compromises from $50 up.

When visiting Indianapolis, step into the Opryly for your temporal work. Good barbers will give you the best attention. All modern conveniences, bath and so forth. Poolroom in the rear.
ATTORNEY W. W. HYDE
Mr. Hyde has had several out-of-town cases during his practice in this city. He closed a mortgage at Seslem, Ill. He won a specific performance on a contract suit of $1,500 at Louisville. In Chicago he had charge of a probate case for Alice Staten, involving $2,000. In this city he closed the estates of Mattle Hayden and Mary Jane Jacobson, amounting to several thousand dollars.
This splendid variety speaks very well for Mattle Hayden, who is, as it is seen, at home in all the departments of the law.
He has the honor of being deputy prosecutor of Marlton county, to which office he was appointed January 1, 1915. He will be found in a well equipped suite of rooms in the Myer-Kiser bank building.

MISS HATTIE HARRIS
A Singer of Exceptional Voice, Doing Cabaret Work at Haynes
Miss Mattie Harris, one of New York City's best known and liked cabaret entertainers, is best known for who possesses unusual vocal quality. And the fact that she gets all of the good things out of a song which goes to make her a star where she may be entertaining. We have often wondered if our "immortal poet", Paul Lawrence Dunbar, had her in mind when he wrote:
"Easy 'nough fou' fukes to hollah, Lookin' at de lines an dots, Wake me up, where's the immortal it, An' de chune comes in, in spots; But fu' real meloJous music, Dat jes' strikes yo' heat and clings, Jes' you listen enwigs wif me Wooo singy songs."
FRANK BAILEY, SUCCESSFUL
CATERER AND MANGER
OF GOLDGRABEN'S DIN-
ING ROOMS.
Nine solid months have now passed since the flame of Frank Bailey's genius discarded and faded out in Goldgraben's dining rooms. Until his entry upon the scene, Goldgraben's had just maintained and joyously quail-way the distinction of being labeled a very good place in to which dine. But since Mr. Bailey's advent as Goldgraben's man and understanding of his institutional and understanding of the catering art, this fashionable restaurant has become a dining place extraordinary. But since Mr. Bailey has his reign in the above described premises, brought about many pleasant changes, those which served as "food" to the New York novelty seekers, demonstrated how completely he was the master over his art, when he gave to the Goldgraben clientele a combination of real

"food satisfaction" with "cabaret pleasure," currious as it may be to many, because of his long, useful and unvaried success in the business world of this city, Mr. Bailey has still some experience in the art of lithestone. He is what we folk in this city are proud to call him, a twentieth century model of "expert efficiency." He is not stantly on the job that not any of his twenty-odd waiters nor either of his two cashiers can accurately inform one that he really uses to rest in.

New York's Big Man in the Dance World.
MISS CLEO DESMOND.
When we first sat spellbound under the fine display of stagecraft exhibited by Miss Desmond, we handled one of the principal roles in the production of "Within the Law," played at the Lafayette Theater in this season. Miss Desmond is a lady performer who was endowed with a true artistic ability and a naturalness that topmost pinnacle of her profession. Since her affiliation with the Quality Amusement Players, Miss Desmond has been a regular performer in various rendered portrayals of vastly different types of characters in three cities, Baltimore, and Baltimore. This lady has demonstrated that she possesses the art of acting not only when speaking parts are used, but also when presenting a "master scholar" who is an adept in cramming brief sentences and aphorisms. Miss Desmond, wisdom, Miss Desmond, through the wonderful magic of her style, can convey to her auditors by a shrug of her shoulders what she may later put into words. Almost exactly the wonderful things which she may later put into words, she can no stranger, for Miss Desmond made her first entrance into the theatricals as a soprano who could really sing. In prince-like bubbling-over-with-good-health girl that we met a few years ago in productions ever put together with Catherine
One of the hardest working women of the past have ever had the pleasure of shaking hands with is Mrs. Charles H. Anderson. You recall how the colored newspapers of several cities have time after time told you now really ordinary this lady of the stageland is. There are two ways of securing these hands of the sugar coated empties to pay out your good hard coin for them and the other is, to get them through the forceful merits of your work. Mrs. Anderson thought that sugar coated empties she really prefers, you know, the slower but more truthful kind of publicity, something like by the word of "truth," but not by the word of "truth," the kind so often used to fill up newspaper space, while it would as hard she most certainly would not buy. Therefore, we feel that we are speaking about the general idea we say that she has been a wonderful and decided element to the successes attained by stock companies-playing in the Lafayette theater.

STRAIGHTEN YOUR HAIR
Not with not trons. But do it with Kink-no-more, the greatest hair straightening preparation on earth. Kink-no-straightening preparation is a wonder of hair. It takes one day, or one week, but to last from six to eight months. Water nor nothing else will make it kink again after it has been straightened, and no one can do a wonder worker. So marvelous does it do its work that one can hardly believe their hair becomes so unique because there is not another preparation in the world like it. We offer a hair that Kink-no-more will not straighten.
Kink-no-more is a vegetable compound; it is perfectly harmless and safe, but will stop it from falling out; positively removes dandruff, promotes a luxurious skin texture, and glossy. HAWKINS DEFEAT SANDERS.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Larence Hawkins gave Eddie Sanders fifteen pounds of weight and won the decision over the Chicago boy in ten rounds Tuesday night, Dec. 12, at the Future City A. C. This was the semi-nail to Langford-Johnson bout. Hawkins, who tipped the beam at about 117 pounds, is one of the cleverest bantam weights that ever showed or developed in St. Louis and is
a very hard hitter. He staggered Sanders time and again with left hooks and right crosses. It looked like Hawkins was about to score the knockout but the Chicago lad managed to weather the storm. It was a good bout from the first to the final round. Larence Hawkins, who looks so much like Leo Johnson that they could be caked with other accords to be caked although Johnson is a lightweight and Hawkins is a bantam. Hawkins has defeated Benny Hall so many times that we have forget the final score. Hall is the lad who gave Patty McCure such a good beating while McCure was in St. Louis claiming the lad's hawk weight championship belt. Hawkins also kayo Kid Sweet last summer. Sanders has fought some good lightweights, such ones as Leo Patterson, Young Gans and Kid Roax of Memphis, so this looks mighty good for Little Hawkins.

THE FREEMAN. AN ILLUSTRATED COLORED NEWSPAPER.
Along the Highway!
By Wm. H. Shackleford
A Real Santa Claus.
What's old Santa going to bring you? Familiar, isn't it? And it makes you run back to that period when there were indeed peace and good will in your life. The period of early childhood is, above all other periods, the happiest in a life. The Highway Man has visions now of those days when at Yuletide above the large open fireplace, hanging from the mantel there was a stocking. He remembers how at first dark he jumped into the bed, covering up head and ears that Santa might not catch him awake. Those were happy days and they'll not return unless it be as a retrospect, or in that indescribable ecstacy which comes from sending old Santa to others.
It was a sorrowful period in my life when I was told that I was too old for Santa to visit me. My fairy home fell any my joy fled. I remember the first Christmas when I hung up no stocking. True, I was given many things, and I accepted them gratefully, but my dream, most beautiful dream, had vanished. Santa had passed me by.
Is there anything greater than the faith of a little child? In whom does dwell the real spirit of the Christ more than in the breast of innocent childhood? And the Highway Man asks a more important question: Who would destroy that faith and wound that spirit? It is an awful thing when a grown-up loses faith in the good and broken spirit trudges life's pathway just because he doesn't exactly care to die. It is more than awful when a little child is forced to live a full life, cherishing no faith in that which is good and having no spirit to lift up its little head.
The Highway Man knows grown-ups who kill the faith of childhood and rob it of its happiness. Many of us know of people who say there is no Santa Claus and who tell little children a sad story of his non-existence. These people the Highway Man disputes and defies, and asserts that there IS a Santa Claus just as real as the spirit to do good is real—just as true as the principle of peace on earth and good will to men is. Santa Claus is the embodiment of this spirit, and wherever it dwells, wherever there is a disposition on the part of any individual to pass along sunshine and happiness to the hearts of little children, or big children, to the hearts of little children—so Santa Claus. More real than Buster Brown, more visible in the life of childhood than Little Red Riding Hood; living in the spirit of life as much as Cinderella or any of the characters that dwell in storyland is Santa Claus, the children's triest and best friend.
Santa Claus IS real. The spirit to do GOOD is NOT a MYTH. Does he get all over the world in one night? If the spirit to do good gets all over the world in one night, then Santa goes all over it. Does he reward good children and bad children according to their deeds? If that is the spirit of the Child who came to the earth hundreds of years ago and gave us our FIRST Christmas—if that is His spirit, then the children should know that Santa comes to those who are good and may withhold some things from those who are bad. Does Santa go down the chimney? The spirit to do good goes anywhere. Can God go down a chimney? So can the patron saint who hitches up his steeds and over all the earth dispenses his gifts and his presents.
Don't kill the faith of childhood by saying that there is no Santa Claus. You are ignorant and cruel. If there is no Santa Claus for you, it is your own fault; you've closed the door to him. If Christmas means nothing to you, you mean nothing to the world, and God knows you need a visitation of the spirit of good will and good cheer. There is something wrong with you.
Faith is what you need. Hang up your stocking and tell the GOOD SPIRIT to fill it with trust and confidence. Ask Him to give you just plain, old, ordinary common sense enough to tell the children that the Good Spirit exists in the world; that he dispenses his gifts lavishly to those who love Him and that YOU, even YOU, want to be one of His agents to deliver these gifts. You want to be a Santa Claus as much as you want to be a Christian, for Santa is nothing more than the Christian spirit made manifest in the lives of men and women, boys and girls.
* * *
A child can best understand God in story. Therefore Santa Claus is the Good Spirit in story-land.
Santa Claus is EVERYWHERE at the same time, because the spirit TO DO GOOD is EVERYWHERE at the same time—Christmas time.
Santa Claus is Just as visible as the spirit TO DO GOOD is visible. Become one, hang up your stocking. Have FAITH and leave chest to SANTA CLAUS.
I know you know the little line:
“THE COW JUMPED O’ER THE MOON,”
The way good steak is soaring now
This cow won’t be back soon.
And yet I get some comfort in
“ALL GOES UP MUST COME DOWN,”
And tho’ sirloin IS UP in air
‘Twill be back on the ground.
“BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER,”
Where did the hens all fly?
Five cents an egg at Xmas time,
Oh how will I get by?
I wish that I had bought some eggs;
“A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE;”
A small cold storage all my own—
That would have been just fine?
Congress will soon investigate
These high prices, so I’m told,
But you can’t tell about that bunch,
“ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD.”
“ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS,” too,
“PRETTY IS AS PRETTY DOES”—
We’re up against the hardest thing
That the country ever was.
"FAULTS, LIKE CHICKENS, COME HOME TO ROOST," The war is to blame they say— For the sky-high cost of living And prices we pay to-day.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
MERRY CHRISTMAS HOTEL
Hotel Dale.
Six years ago the management of the Hotel Dale undertook the gigantic responsibility to submit to the traveling public the opportunity to choose a place of abode, during their vacation in the summer season, a first-class hotel to supplant the old custom of being crowded into small lodging and boarding houses, where the sanitary conditions as a rule were not conducive to good health. In so doing the management was confronted with a number of problems to solve to insure the confidence of the public in general, that success
might.
The Hotel Dale is not a pictorial structure on paper, but, in reality, an architectural building—a work of art, a monument to good taste. Every known device which makes for safety and comfort for the accommodation makes this as complete a pleasure of life for the accommodation of by most pleasant environments, with accommodations to meet the demands of all classes. The interior of this hotel, conceivable in seemingly insignificant rooms, is not as massively furnished. In fact, as oneidence than any building of public nature. The rooms are light, airy and luxuriously furnished, and contain every modern conveniences of the system, and its cuisine rivals the finest hotel of record. Here is a place where those who appreciate simple elegance of service and all that makes for ease of living may have their desire satisfied without extravagance. The Abyssinian Architect and evening concerts daily during the open hours. The air amusements are numerous with lawn tennis courts on the premises. The moral status of the hotel is above reproach, and reflects credit on the management, who have passed the crucial performance stood the test of the most profound critic, and today it is the most popular
noster. Until one has seen for himself the charming rooms in this palatial building, it is not possible to conceive the grace and elegance of the decorations,
ligging and sanding of our leading men, women and children who have traveled abroad have been guests at this hotel and they acclaim the management for the excellent manner in which it is conducted. The success thus thus demonstrates very gratifying and proves that Mr. Dale will mistake in the opening of this gem of seashore resorts, and the public has demonstrated approval of his efforts by the patronage afforded. The prices for the privileges, comforts and conveniences cannot be had anywhere else where he is asked to pay in this hotel, and here is a good place to puncture an overworked misconception concerning the financial requirements for a hotel of this class. Wild tales of fabulous prices have been spread broadcast, and among these many glowing falsehoods for service, and so service that the proviator who has made to adjust a minimum rate to a maximum of service. The hotel is personally managed by Mr. Dale, with a corps of attendants, who are thorough, expert, and efficient, and their efficiency of service will give satisfaction to the guest without friction. A sojourn to Cape May will convince the most skeptical person that, in registering at the Hotel Dale they have visited the most finely equipped Negro hotel known, where there is no found accommodation unreasonable. Requisitions for a hotel, for information, will prompt attention during Hotel Dale, Cape May, New Jersey.

MISS ABBIE MITCHELL, AMERICA'S ACKNOWLEDGED GREATEST
COLORED SINGER, NOW APPEARING IN DRAMA.
Today in the realm of vocal music our race has long been acknowledged supreme. In the South is the most picturesque region in America. Because of the great diversity of the public, the cabins many a Patti have to die unknown and the music a Carus drudged away his existence in the cotton fields and rice fields that, had freedom been universal, would have won laurels on the concert or the operatic stage. Now how many came forth to prove the natural strength and sweetness of the New Yorker in the era of reconstruction carried the world by storm. Flora Batson and Madam Sulekka followed, singing extraordinary honors, and were eclipsed by the great music of the star of an important musical company. Numerous jubilee companies have flourished, singers have come and gone, and concert artists have been as numerous as violets on a spring morning. Negro melody itself was not accomplished until the dawn of Abbie Mitchell. Of her we can safely say that the race at last

Having traveled everywhere worth going to see Mr. Arthur Ray has finally settled down to the steady work offered by the company. Mr. Ray said: "As I had been everywhere and seen everything I decided after the financial reverses met with by the last two companies I was with, to discontinue with the company. CIATED
With Colored show business. HE WAS IN CLOSE TOUCH
With the powers that be, and many a team owes its success
To hte recommendations FURNISHED BY MR. LOGAN.
He was associated with WILLIAMS & WALKER until death
Severed that team's connection. HIS BEST WORK WAS DONE
While affiliated with the LATE J. LUBRIE HILL.
Mr. Logan was one of the BEST COLORED ADVANCE MANAGERS
In show business. He is MOURNED BY MANY FRIENDS
IN AND OUT OF THE PROFESSION.
And $20.00 gold pieces DANGLING FROM HIS WATCH CHAIN.
Any one who can wear GOLD MONEY FOR ORNAMENTATION.
These Xmas times, is not ONLY PROSPEROUS BUT COURAGEOUS.
Incidentally, it was THIS SAME CLARENCE POWELL
Who taught us to DO OUR FIRST BIT OF COMEDY.

The Northside Infirmary, FOR COLORED PEOPLE,
Birmingham, Ala., under the DIRECTORSHIP OF DR. U. G. MASON,
With Dr. Johnson and Dr. H.C. Bryant, ATTENDANT PHYSICIANS,
is about the FINEST AND FITTED INSTITUTION OF ITS KIND
It has been our pleasure to visit. SANITARY FROM BOTTOM TO TOP;
Conveniently located and well equipped; EFFICIENT HEAD NURSE
From one of NEW YORK'S LARGEST HOSPITALS,
With special training IN ADMINISTERING ANESTHETICS.
Electrical and gas connections, AND COURTEOUS TREATMENT
From those in charge. FEES REASONABLE. THAT'S ABOUT ALL.
We had occasion, SOMEWHERE IN THE SOUTH,
To enter a restaurant, LABELLED: "FOR WHITE PEOPLE ONLY."
Sometimes we feel white, BUT WE NEVER LOOK IT, AND KNOW IT.
And we knew we had no BUSINESS IN THAT EATSHOP.
But hunger, the lateness of the hour and SCARCITY OF CUSTOMERS,
Impelled us to TAKE THE RASH STEP.
We figured we might APPROACH THE LUNCH COUNTER
With becoming MEEKNESS AND HUMILITY,
And be compensated with some SANDWICHES IN EXCHANGE
For some time the FILTHY LUCRE THAT RULES THIS REALM.
Without DAMAGE OR DANGER TO THE ESTABLISHMENT,
Or, to our most VALUED AND SELF-ESTEEMED PERSON,
We were right as to THE EXCHANGE OF EATS FOR MONEY,
But our HUMILITY AND MEEKNESS WAS FOUND WANTING,
And there came a pert COMMAND FOR THE REMOVAL OF OUR HEAD-GEAR.
We looked hurriedly about us, SAW THERE WERE NO LADIES PRESENT,
Three men, their heads OBLITERATED BY HUGH SOMBREROS,
Sat at the lunch counter, SO INTENT WITH GORMANDIZING
That we were not noticed. WE THEN SNATCHED A QUICK GLANCE TO THE REAR.
Our ear was not bothered, SO WE BACKED OUT THE DOOR.
Without having REMOVED OUR NOOSCOPIC COVERING.
We had reason for backing out. A SIMILAR REQUEST WAS MADE
Of a member of another Colored company and HE TURNED TO WALK OUT.
His exit was quickened by a cup COMING INTO VIOLENT CONTACT
With his cranium, DEXTEROUSLY THROWN BY A WAITER.
We are a good dodger, so we RETREATED WITH OUR FACE TO THE
ENEMY.
We do not hesitate to say, that, HAD OUR EXIT BEEN BARRED,
And the request (?) FOR REMOVAL BEEN INSISTED UPON,
We would have removed THE OBNOXIOUS TOP-PIECE.
Acting upon the hypothesis, THAT IT IS EASER
To remove one's hat THAN TO PICK UP ANGER HEAD,
We are constrained to think THAT WHITE MEN
Who request Colored men to REMOVE THEIR HATS
In their (white men's) presence, ENTERTAIN SOME SERIOUS DOUBT
As to their boasted superiority. WE ARE WILLING TO DOFF OUR BON-
NETELLECTUAL, MORAL AND SPIRITUAL SUPERIORITY
To a member of any race or nationality. OTHERWISE, OUR HAT STAYS
PUT.
Since coming South we have BEEN REQUESTED TO REMOVE OUR HAT Upon three different occasions, and EACH TIME IN A
While in Knoxville, we visited THE

It is an ideal sanitation and our girls ARE
Taking advantage of the opportunity, LEAVING

tiny little soubrette is very clever, and made many changes of beautiful costumes. The teams of Houze and Houze and tumultuous, lively, Dewayman Niles equally came up to his reputation and actually went beyond expectation. He may be styled as the "Picturesqueque" classic, for the title for this unequaled class one. In him we see art, grace and culture in their noblest bloom. He is an attraction of superior quality, and he only played the Spanish Weltz, Castellano, the incomparable

GOOD BILL AT LINCOLN THEATER

one, most artistically performed, with the greatest expressions and feelings of joy. He electrified his audience. Those peculiar body twists and dislocations which he does are most dangerous and miserable, but he knows nothing of it. He performs with such grace and dignity that he delights the very soul of the audience. The later was packed to its doors every night and the many hundreds have been taken up at the performances and Dewayman Niles, the greatest contortionist living.

SCME GOOD ONES DONE OVER. AND SOME BRAND NEW ONES.
What follows in this column are, as it does赖, some good ones which were locked up in passing. There is a woman just like good clothes. There is someone just like good clothes. There is someone just like good clothes. The object is to give the happenings a "Tiffany setting," whatever that means. I do not plead with someone to notice something good. But my invention does not come first handed, I am not absolutely certain about what I will use the "Tiffany setting" subject a little further. The expression "beautiful woman, who in her generous beauty, he wealth of autumn-tainted hair, her granddin individuality of isolation, under the sun, stood "head and shoulders," so to speak, above her kind, she was sheer for that fact and
Well, to make a long story short, I used the expression very much beheaded, for this young woman had no admiration for anything else but good things in the very best of things. She liked the big things, and was afraid of Ouida's "Waifs and Strays." When discovered it was amid brambles and a pile of rocks, I wanted for the biggest and the redestest on the bush. I need not enlarge either here, and since the comparison was so stark, I was outraged when out continued throughout the side of the Ouida babe. I admit a small amount of conceit is included in this story, but I think of it here, but, I hope, reasonable, since conceit, a little, is not the human composition, preserving it to its unreceived purposes, just as one of the fifty-seven varieties.

much valued by the people in general. But now and then they come in very nicely, answering the old saying, keep things three ways, use for I. or for O. In looking over one of those records which dealt with tariff duties, we find that the bibles entered the ports of the United States paying 55 and 45 per cent duty. Was nothing to do with the transpiration across the land to Indianapolis. We have not learned that the status of a new one—the decreased value, perhaps, only, is considered, when used. If one would have been asked what would be a very costly transaction if Knox took it a very costly two ifays' time was has subsided, the visions fitting the good faith of the other yesterday—are as the dreams of the young. The spirits that I conjure forth allah had something like that Lord Byron said.
Too Bad! Too Bad! Isn't It?
The above is a headline to a recent comment on the Evening News of Yale, Free Press of New York who became famous this year as a football player. Here's a business I enter when I think much about it. And I may be prepossessed against the game—in other words, don't want to like it. But to me, it is a game. "We look forward to ascertain from our Southern exchanges what ought to be done to the Negro on Brown's impudence team who had the unparalleled impudence to score at will on Vale and Harvard."
The Post then stops long enough to say what the Sun said:
"In the victory, says the Sun, in dangerously inflammable language, 'one man stood out as possibly the greatest of the country, and is Fred Dardar the Negro player of the Providence team.' The Post then takes it up, saying: 'After Pollard scored his third touchdown after running forty-six yards through mature Harvard team, the rose and the coward his an ovation rarely heard even on a collegiate field.' This is all very generous, of course, but Pollard's familiar friends, social prejudice and Anglo-Saxon superiority? Isn't this putting dangerous ideas into play, his proper place? Did not the Stadium crowd realize that by thus aplauding

Nervousness and Stage Fright.
Is there anything that's good for the nerves? Not very good, one would think. And maybe nervousness is the best thing. The economy of the human system, since nothing is in vain. A writer who had seen some nervousness, certainly gave his version of what he saw in them by way of nervousness. The fact, all people who must face crowds, know that stage fright means. Many, all people who must face crowds, skewed when they really were. It is the pugilist who has a great reason to be nervous. This is not wholly because the opposite corner. He is not personally afraid of the battle; it is the realities. Applause is sometimes more powerful in its influence than money. The defeated weep, often, because they did not win and were moneyless. Mothers, sisters, fathers and the whole family output, starts out, even as the Spartan mother who buckled the shield about her son. To meet these relatives again, when the man of trials and tribulations. Then through the public the defeated one, which in sign of humility picks his tail between his legs. Applause is meat to most people before the public, which to be without is spiritual death.
The above mentioned writer, speak-

Colored Boxing Business.
Little Arthur Stigall, boxer, who has been doing business down east in Maryland and that vicinity, seems to be the most promising of the recent boxing stars. He is getting papers of that section. He is beating everybody and getting great praise for doing so. The game seems to have been at St. Louis, St. Louis, St. Louis, St. Louis, and in New Orleans. In fact, the boxing business with the colored box is sloughing down to the lowest levels of fighting men, but this was the afterglow of the Jack Johnson scintillation, and the lesser lights were also eclipsed. Young Lowery, the little gentleman fighter, is gone, and nobody knows where. The boxing stars from Berlin, the Dutchman from Berlin, was here, shined a while, and then, like a mackerel on the beach, was no more. Kid Lowery, the little gentleman, small hopes of getting a meet in his home town. Kid Fields, who says that he fought ninety-nine times without a razor, Hannibal is non est. And the rest of them have gone "where the woodbine twine and the birds warblest." The guys are piling up the coin. Welsh, Dillon, Levinskey, Gibbons, Lewis, and the rest of them, are making a year's worth of keeps the nickels from the colored

boys. The good old days of Dixon and Gans seem to be gone forever. They were spent it like a Rockefeller. They are gone, but they left their flawless business when the captains of the fighting business are mentioned in the book of Dixon and among them.
Senor Jack Johnson.
Jack Johnson, from the latest account, is somewhere in Spain, back in his youth, back to her own. It were a shame that he conducted himself so that he became a member of the Army. He was within his constitutional rights, all right, but custom and sentiment are higher than laws, especially as it concerns the important black Americans. But Jack Johnson has no rightful quarrel with the world. He has tasted the bitter truth of his life and he has had the wherewithal to guarantee his kingship. But Johnson is a colored man, a common colored man, a black man, a colored visions of State street, Chicago, than one. The ordinary colored man's souls, his haps, this goes for the most of us. To get away from the straight-laced white folks is as a non-studious school. He is not a black man. Some may take offense at this restriction, but I do not have in mind this well-known class. I am talking of young degroego nature as manifest by the many.
LINCOLN VANQUISHED BY UNION

Pennsylvania 13-0.
(By G. W. Brown.)
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.—Union college coach John McCarthy played his football career by swamping Lincoln by a 13-0 defeat here Thanksgiving day, the contest was the first ever event in Vineyard Park and was replete with thrills. Lincoln's grim determination to emerge victorious was was not due to a poor team or to non-versatile playing, but to the fact that the Red and Steel machine explained her in every department of the tilt.
