EX-SLAVE TO CELEBRATF HIS 112th BIRTHDAY John Jackson, born an a slave in Clay County, Mo., and was sold seven times, will celebrate his 112th birthday Christmas Day on his ten-acre truck farm near Cahokia. Jackson won foot races when he was 85 and was never marrfrd until twelve years ago. His wife is dead. He has sent out invitations to his friends to attend the celebration Fined for Violating School Law. The first case from the country districts was tried in Squire Wrigt's Court, here last Saturday. Fred Homberg plead guilty and was fined. Trimmings and all amounted to fourteen dollars. The trunancy law can be and will be enforced. Notice. This is to inform all of the churches, circles and members of the W. E. E. State Association, auxiliary to the General Missionary Baptist State Association that Sister Nancy Brooks, was elected and authorized to organize circles and to do missionary work in general in the Southern district. She has forfeited all rights and privileges by associating and connecting herself to the Holy church. She has denounced the faith, and her connections with us has ceased. Jones, ex-principal of Dunbar High School arrived in the city Sunday morning to spend the holidays and is the welcome guest of Mrs. J. E. Jones, who was his board mistress while in the city teaching. Prof. Jones, comes to us from Kansas City, Kas., where he resides. He is one of the instructors of Quinderra College and assistant pastor of one of the A. M. E. churches of that city with a membership of 1,100 and who has just closed a successful rally at which time $9,500.00 was raised. He occupied the pulpit Sunday evening at the St. Paul A. M. E. church, and preached adeep logical sermon, which pleased his hearers. Prof. Jones, is the son of Bishop Jones, of Ohio, who presides over the Ohio, and Texas Conferences and who is doing a creditable work for the Wilberforce University. He has made many friends in this city, having turned out more graduates from Dunbar than any other principal thus far. Subscribe for the Gazette. Rev. A. Lovelace, in School. Editor of the Gazette: Please allow me through the columns of your worthy paper, that I am in the city and according to previous plans am attending the National Baptist Theological school (unincorporated convention) every day. The School according to the advertisement of the trustees threw open its doors last Monday the 17th. A splendid program was arranged and great enthusiasm prevailed and after more than a quarter of a century of planning on the part of the Baptist they are enabled to operate the greatest Negro Baptist School in all the world. These buildings are ideal in every department. Mt Olive Baptist Association of Illinois will receive the credit of being here. I was greatly encouraged by our wide-awake moderator Rev. J B. McCryar, who is a trustee for this school. I trust that each pastor will take a special collection at once so as to reach me here by the 1st of Dec., or of each month. Any amount will be thankfully received and the same reported in the columns of the paper. I wish to thank the pastor Rev Thos. Good Services all day. Rev. Edgar McCrary, Preached Good Sermon. Dr. Jones, Leads Host. The Stewardess rally at St. Paul A. M. E. church, last Sunday was a decided success. Mrs Georgia Ann Martin, the president with the aid of the board made Sunday a high day for the pastor, Dr. S. B. Jones. Rev. Edgar McCrary, pastor of the Provident Baptist church was invited to preach by the pastor and the board two weeks ago and according to announcements a large crowd greeted him at the morning service. He in his own way preached a strong gospel sermon that set the hearts of men and women on fire. The choir under the direction of Mrs. H. G. Burke, was at its best and rendered excellent music. The pastor, Dr. Jones, ts doing a good work, having been here one year and a half and paid $800 on the church debt which speaks well for him. Rev. A. H. Jones, of Kansas City. Kaş., spoke at the evening service to a large crowd. Thus closed a high day at St. Paul. A free will offering was given Rev. Hail! three times hail to Our Eighth Illinois. Subscribe for The Gazette. Now. WOMAN TRAMPLED TO DEATH IN BARN BY COW Benton, Ill., Dec. 18.—Mrs. Julia Saksa, was found dead at West Frankfort today. The coroner's jury returned a verdict that she had been trampled to death by a cow. To the Churches and S. Schools: This is to inform you that Rev. A. Loveace, of Murphysboro, wishes to enter the National Baptist Theological Training School, on Nov. 17th, the date set for opening this great school which is fostered by the National Baptist Convention, Unincorporated. He needs assistance and only asks that the churches and S. S. assist him in securing an education. I therefore, as Moderator of the Mt. Olive Baptist Association and trustee from Illinois of this Training School, located in Nashville, Tenn., contribute jointly the small sum of $1.00 per month toward assisting this young man in paying his way through college. Unity Baptist church and S. S., have voted to give $1.00 per month. We desire and hope every church, and auxiliary will willingly contribute for this purpose. Help Southern Illinois share some credit with other states in sending some one to this great school as it must be supported. Rev. Lovelace, leaves next week. Morris, pastor of Antioch Baptist church, Metropolis, says he is willing to go record as one who will give $1.00 per month for his church. The marriage announcement of Miss Ollie Isola Lawton, to Allie F. Garrett, came as a surprise to their many friends. The couple was married Oct. 4. Mrs. Garrett, is the principal of the Bruce School of Future City. Mr. Garrett, is associated in farming in Mississippi County, where they will reside in early spring. Centralia, Ill. Rev. W. H. Carter, preached a touching sermon Sunday and Rev. R. S. Anderson, the district missionary delivered same in the eve. We had a reciting contest for the benefit of the church last week. Mrs. L. M. Hemphill, the New York banker, as members of the Executive Committee of Near East Relief the former American Committee or Armenian and Syrian Relief, have issued a Christmas appeal for continued support of this organization and its work. Near East Relief is now operating under a government charter and is practically glore in the western Asian field, the Red Cross several months ago having announced its withdrawal. The Christmas letter, a classle of its kind, is as follows: "Dear Friend—Another little child has shriveled up and died." "The mother, creeping back, gaunt and cold, from the desert, has put down the thin little bones with those that strew the road and has sunk beside them, never to rise again. "Only a little child and a mother out on the bleak Armenian road! But what is that vision hovering there and what is that voice the cold winds bear to the ears of our souls—'I was hungry and ye gave me no meat; I was naked and ye clothed me not.'" "Today—yes, today—while we are preparing our gifts for Christmas, many more of these little children—not a hundred nor a thousand, but 250,000 of them—are still wandering uncared for and alone in that dead land, 'their weazened skins clinging in fear to their rattling bones,' and they are crying out with gasping breath, 'I am hungry, I am hungry!' And the voice of one who watches us as we prepare gifts to celebrate his birthday comes again to the ears of our souls—'I am hungry! I am hungry!! I am hungry!!' "Now, the children and the mothers in Armenia are dreading the winter. Just human remnants they are, not protected, many of them, from the elements by even the dignity of rags. The most favored have merely shredded rags." How shall we sing our Christmas songs and laugh and light the candles and give beautiful gifts while that pleading voice cries in the ears of our souls, "I am naked and cold?" "But we can feed and clothe these perishing ones—some of them—before it is too late. Herbert is has cabled from the Caucasus. "He fed 5,000 hungry people in the wilderness and said to his followers "The things that I do shall ye do also and greater things than these shall ye do." Today nearly 800,000 destitute Armenians—his people—need food and clothing. "He took little children in his arms and blessed them. Today will you take one or more of these sad, cold, hungry little children of Armenia into your arms and heart in his name and give them food and warmth and life?" "What a joyful Christmas it will be when with your songs and your laugh- er you hear a voice of wondrous sweetness speaking to you, 'O, ye blessed of my Father,' I was hungry and ye gave me meat, I was naked and ye clothed me; inasmuch as ye have done it to these, my brethren, ye have done it to me.' For Executive Committee, Near East Relief. BANDITS ATTACK HARBORD, THINKING HIM ARMENIAN Because he and members of his party were mistaken for Armenians, Maj. Gen. James G. Harbord, head of the American Mission to Armenia, narrowly escaped death at the hands of a band of marauding bandits a few miles from Mount Ararat. Major General Harbord has just returned to the United States and made a report to President Wilson on the distressing conditions in the Near East, where American charity is saving thousands of lives through the Near East Relief. Olive Baptist District Associations of Southern Illinois, desirous of a more oneness in perpetuating the principles and Doctrines Legislated by Jesus Christ, and practiced by His Apostles, seeking by the word of God to bring ourselves, and the churches as well, more into the unity of the Faith of Jesus Christ, do now adopt the following Constitution. Article 1-Name. Sec.1. This organization shall be called the Missionary Baptist Minister's Alliance of Southern Illinois. Sec.2. Officers. Its Officers shall consist of a President, two Vice Presidents, Recercing Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer and such committees as may conserve the best interest of the body, all of which shall be elected annually by a majority vote of the body. Article 2 Membership Sec.1. This organization shall be composed of Missionary Baptist Ministers furnishing benefited membership in any regular Missionary Baptist Church, together with his good standing where he now pastors, or where he last pastored, or the church where he worship's with whether he ever pastored or not Article 3. Authority. Sec.1. This organization shall have the power to receive to, or drop from its fellowship any Minister or Ministers whom it deems worthy or unworthy of fellowship. Sec.2. This Constitution by laws, or regulations, shall by no means conflict with the rules and regulations of the two Associations namely Mt. Olive and East Mt. Olive. Poor Church Fund. A fund of $57.80 was raised by the Mt. Olive Baptist Association at Duquoin, last week through the efforts and advice of Moderator McCray. This fund will be used to aid weak churches when the Fund reaches the amount to justify. The money will be loaned for a short time at a small intrrest. We have a standing committee to look after this part of the work and we urge every church to establish a Penny-Fund by lifting a penny collection every Sunday. This is a move that was in hearty accord with the association and was readily approved.
