METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE FRANCE WANTS NEGROES. ALLEGED TO HAVE ATTAGKED WHITE WOMAN=LYNGHED Ramblings Old Rambler, left the city Saturday for Murphy-boro, on an invitation of the members of of Mr. Gilead Baptist church. Rev 'D. W. Johnson, is pastor, and treated us with the due courtesy. We were accompanied by Rev T. Turner. On arriving in the city we made our way to the excellent home of Bro. G. E. Grimes and daughter Mrs. G. A. Macon, our friends, where we met a warm reception and a hearty grasp of the hand. Soon a sumptuous meal was spread and we were invited into the dining room where we refreshed our "Craven" appetites. We were soon joined by the pastor as we had written him of our visit to the city. We held a conference together as to the work of the church and our visit to the city. He then perfected arrangements with the above named host and hostess for our entertainment while in the city, where we spent two very pleasant nights and took several meals. We found Reg. Johnson, struggling hard to advance the interest of the cause of Christ. We spent of the time while in the city at the home of Bro. and Sister A. C. Bolden, 406 N. 17th St. and partook of their hospitality for supper and dinner. He is an engineer at the Silica plant and commands a good salary and stand enjoys the confidence of his employers. They subscribed for the Gazette. We attended the S. S. at the above named church, also service at night where Rev. T. Turner delivered a short but an impressive service from St. John 9:9. "I am The attendance was quite small owing to weather conditions. Much interest was manifested and we were invited to return again with the assurance of a larger congregation with the return of the springtime weather. Deacons John Smith, Granville Whitelaw, Zenia Coger, Thomas Aler, Sam Williams, and Will Mason, A. C. Bolden, trustees. Sisters C. A. Macon, A. C. Bolden are staunch supporters of this little band of christians. We hope to see this church become strong which can be done by an united effort. Colored Women Form Democratic Glub In St. Louis. About fifty Colored women met in St. Louis last Sunday and organized an auxiliary the Association Colored Democratic Ward Club. The following officers were elected; Mrs. Lucille Wilborn, president; Mrs. Genevieve Mills, vice president; Mrs. Parsetta Callaway, secretary; Mrs. Irene Whetstone, recording secretary; Mrs. Annie Branch, treasurer, and Mrs. Essie Lawry, chairman of the Executive Committee. It is stated that more than a hundred have signed membership blanks.—St. Louis Argus. Rev. A. Lovelace, in School. Nashville Tenn. Nov. 21 Editor of the Gazette: Please allow me through the columns of your worthy paper, that I am in the city and according to previous plans am attending the National Baptist Theological school (unincorporated convention, every day. The School according to the advertisement of the trustees threw open its doors last Monday the 17th. A splendid program was arranged and great enthusiasm prevailed and after more than a quarter of a century of planning on the part of the Baptist they are enabled to operate the greatest Negro Baptist School in all the world. These buildings are ideal in every department. Mr Olive Baptist Association of Illinois will receive the credit of being here. I was greatly encouraged by our wide-awake moderator Rev. J B. McCrary, who is a trustee for this school. I trust that each pastor will take a special collection at once so as to reach me here by the 1st of Dec. or of each month. Any amount will be thankfully received and the same reported in the columns of the paper I wish to thank the pastor Rev Thos. Morris, and the Antioch Baptist church, Metropolis; Macedonia Baptist Church. Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, and Mr. C. V. Loveace, of Murphysboro, wishes to enter the National Baptist Theological Training School on NoA 17th, the date set for opening this great school which is fostered by the National Baptist Convention, Unincorporated. He needs assistance and only asks that the churches and S. S. assist him in securing an education. I therefore, as Moderator of the Mt. Olive Baptist Association and trustee from Illinois of this Training School, located in Nashville, Tenn., contribute jointly the small sum of $1.00 per month toward assisting this young man in paying his way through college. MIZELL Candidate for Road Commissioner in District Number 6 In this week's issue of the Gazette will be found the announcement of Mr. K. N Mizell for road commissioner in District No. 6. Mr. Mizell needs no introduction to the people of this county, being known to all as a man of sterling worth and ability, who has made road building a study for years past and is accordingly qualified to give the people that same excellent service that he has given in the past as an efficient road builder. Having had experience in the work and a general knowledge of the building and improvement of public highways, Mr. Mizell feels that, in a king the support of the voters at the coming election, that recognizing his past services as a man that can be relied on to work for the final good of all concerned, they will honor him again with the office to which he aspires and if elected we are confident that the voters will have no cause to regret the choice made. Another Thunder Bolt Mr. Editor:—Please allow me to say a few words to real Baptist. First, I will say I am 5 feet 7 inches tall and weigh 180 lbs. and it is Baptist doctrine I preach and advocate. The true principles of the doctrine, first Repentance toward God, 2nd faith in His word, and regeneration as the fruits of obedience, and 3rd Baptism which gives all men a perfect right to a church Relation. This being true we as the ministers c God should process the spirit of construction and not destruction. Lets take continued on page 3 col. 3 ANOTHER LYNCHING Alleged to Have Attacked White Woman-Riddled With Bullets Florala, Ala., Jan. 21. Jack Waters, Negro, who is said to have been a soldier in service in France, was lynched here last night following an alleged attack on a white woman. Waters was captured a few hours after the assault and is said to have confessed his crime. His body was found this morning hung to a telephone pole at the intersection of Fifth Avenue, riddled with bullets. The town is quiet and there is no disorder attendant upon the lynching. NEGROES ARE WANTED IN ERANCE. Paris, France—The Petit Parisian, the foremost journal published in France, said editorially: "With 3,000,000 men lost in the war, France is poor in man power. We need 2,000,000 men to help in the reconstruction of France. The only country that can supply that man power is the American colored people. The colored Americans are very much dissatisfied and there is much unrest among them on account the way they are treated by white Americans. In some parts of America black men are lynched every day. In France they are treated the same as any other Frenchman. In our hotels and all other places there is no discrimination. Let French appeal for 2,000,000 colored Americans to help build up France." Preaches Trial Sermon And Then Takes Bride. Another New Preacher for Metropolis. Going Some Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Bro. Thos Harmon, preached his trial sermon at the Antioch Baptist church of which he is a member. A good audience greeted him, and enjoyed every word that fell from his lips. After a brief preliminary, he selected for a text, "Love." One could easily see what points the young speaker made. After his sermon Rev. G. W. Mound City, Ill., Jan. 20, 1929 To the Gazette: Dear Editor, I read in the Union Review some time ago an article stating that Dr. Morris, named One hundred ministers to a little missionary work among the churches associations and conventions, and they have already begun the work assigned them, and so far as I can see that work is to disturb the peace of the churches, and causing division among the churches of our district, and all of them are new men in this district and they have not been here long enough to wear a hole in the seat of their pants, and they are trying to drag the churches out of the Mt. Olive Association in order to organize an association of their own, or a Morris faction. Now, if these preachers want an association of their own no one objects, but I do say in the name of all that is good that these brethren ought to look after the interest of their churches at home and let our churches and the other churches of the district alone that are in peace I wish to serve notice right here, on the these preachers that are trying to disturb the peace of these churches that their services are not needed in Md. City. As for the First Missionary Baptist and Zion Traveler Baptist churches of this place are in the Mt Olive Baptist Association to stay; the Association organized a arly three quarters of a century ago by our sainted fathers who left it in tact and in charge of real Baptist's with Baptist principles handed down by Christ himself, as the bulwark of the Association and we propose to keep this old Baptist Banner flying or report to God the reason for not doing so. So the incorpoated brethren who believe in disturbing the peace of churches and tearing down churches, had better buy tickets for another station. I am yours for peace in the district. Rev. A F. Wimbly and Ethel Wheeler, of Prookport. A revival was begun at the Antioch Baptist church Wednesday night by pastor Rev. Thos. Morris, and we pray for its success. Watch out for groundhog day Feb. 2nd. The Bazaar Club of Unity Baptist church Brookport, held a very important meeting Wednesday afternoon at the residence of Sister Ellen White's residence. She was elected president of the club, Mrs Mary Williams having moved to Marion recently. The next meeting will be at home of Mrs. Mary Wimbly's, next Wednesday at which time the pastor, J. B. Mc Cray, will install the officers All are invited to be present. Mrs. C. A. Macon, was suddenly called to St. Louis, Mo., on account of the sudden death of an only brother Saturday. The cause was not learned. We found some splendid Sisters who are members of the Mt. Gilead Baptist church who with a little painstaking, patience and teaching would be a great asset to this church. Among them are the following: Mrs. Laura Alston has been dangerously sick. Mrs. Maggie Renfro who has been quite sick for some time is improving. There will be services at Unity Baptist church, Brookport, Sunday and business meeting Saturday night. All members are requested to be present. Rev. T. M. Moses of Greenwood, Miss., the recently elected pastor of the First Baptist church, arrived Sunday morning. He paid this office a pleasant call on Tuesday. Mrs. Mabel Shannon, is confined to her bed this week with the flu. Rev. Edgar McCrary, is indisposed this week, unable to attend to his office work. Mrs. Sis Lowery is very sick this week. Mrs, Nancy Crippens is somewhat improved after sevetal weeks illness. Mr. Ed Campbell, is still dangerously ill. Mr. Lal Hodge, who has been confined to his bed several weeks is reported to be no better. Mr. D. L. Tandy, has been in bed at his home for several days which required the attention of attendants at night to give medicine. Mr. Wayne Blackwell, and Miss Eva warfield, of Belgrade, were married last week by a justice. We wish them happiness and prosperity. SOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS If the churches of either association want an other organization they have only to make it known and the work will be done. We are not aware that a single church is dissatisfied, but it is an unholy alliance that is attempting to lead off the churches. If those men are sincere let them tell the whole truth about alien immersion, church federation and freewill ordination. If the State convention has not been guilty of these things let them say so, and if they have reinstated themselves let them tell tell the Baptists so. The minister or ministers who are talking and working to throw overboard both Washington and McCrary, as moderators' of the Mt. Olive and East Mt. Olive Association, will have to resort to some other political trick than lieing, because God hates lieing lips, and a deceitful heart. Some so-called preachers it has been proven are so anxious for office until they have resorted to all kind of crookedness and misrepresentation to try to turn the ministers who have known us for years and churches and the public with whom we have dealt in a social, religious, political, fraternal, and educational circles for more than forty years from us and try to convince them that we are unworthy of the confidence reposed in us, but we are not alarmed, because your days are numbered and you will die a premature death. Some preachers handed themselves together last June and started out to kill our influence with that lie ```markdown ``` To the churches of the East Mt. Olive Baptist Association of Southern Illinois, Greetings: It has been in my mind for some time to write an annual letter for this calendar year, setting forth the noble work done along the lines of Missions and Education, but especially mission. The churches have taken on both nmerical and financial strength with no comslaints at all in so far as we know, and what you have given on your own freewill and accord, as the ministers of the Association have given the light. You have tried to do the right, should the question be asked what has gone with our money, we have only to sight you to the record. We quote from memory: we think the Supt. of Missions, Dr. C. C. Phillips, holds receipts from some of the following churches:— St. Paul Duquoin $41.00; Paul's Chapel, Marion $71.00; Mt. Pleasant, Golconda, $35.00; Mt. Zion, Carrier Mills, $25.00; St. Paul, (Unity) Brookport, $45.00; Gallilee, Carrier Mills, $50.00; Hopewell, Carbondale, $75.00; Mt. Zion, Dewmaine, $30.00; Corrinthian, Mt. Vernon, $50.00; New Bethel, Centralia, $55.00; Shiloh, Murphysboro, $50.00, and others that we will not tax your patience to read, but all have been helped, some in one way or another. We wish to for it to be understood that these figures does not mean annual report, but report from time to time. The Baptists as a whole in this end of the State are united and have a mind to work and for the past few years have made a showing along missions and educational lines. For instance, Mt. Olive Education; and East Mt. Olive. Missions. It might be an inspiration to know that not a church co-operates with either the Mt. or East Mt. Olive associations with two hundred members, and the number of churches will not exceed fifty-five or sixty churches and we realize from seven hundred to nine hundred dollars annually. Membership ranging from seven to fifty five (active members). It must be borne in mind that the two S. S. conventions realize about the same amount. Now if Dr. J. J. Olive and a few others that are following him who are attempting to split up the Baptists can make a better showing than the above let him go on and organize his "Southern Association" or convention that he is to perfect in February. It would be well for the churches to know that before Dr. Olive attended any association, he was feeling around for another organization that he could carry to the Morris incorporated National Baptist Convention, on the grounds that Dr. R. H. Boyd, had stolen our National Baptist; Publishing Board, located at Nashville, Tenn. But the courts have said different; the decision of the courts has disclosed that the property belong to the Baptists of America, and Boyd and his Board are only proper custodians of the prop-property. Now will Dr. J. J. Olive, pastor of the 19th St. Baptist church, whose judgement he has perverted confess to them that he was mistaken, that the church may at least think that he was sincere even if he was wrong. The Doctor is not dealing fair with his brethren. He attended the S. S. convention in Shawnectown, and said, if the Sunday School convention cooperated with the General Missionary Baptist Association there would likely be another organization, because of the fact that the State association affiliated with the Jones National Baptist Convention. He asked the same question in the Mt. Olive Association at Colp, Illinois last September. The Dr. is now endeavoring to carry out his threats and speaks of the trio of the two associations and seeks to blind the people, crying autocratic and bossrule, characterizing the leaders of the two associations. Such is the foundation he has laid for his new Southern association, and too, he wants to go to the "Milk and Cider Convention" where they practice open communion. Freewill ordination and church federation. But we are Baptists, that is why we left them. This letter is for the information of the Baptists of Southern Illinois, and as for Dr. Olive, I will meet him any where at his request, if it be in the 19th street Baptist church, Cairo, Ill., and discuss this matter with him and make him acknowledge he has been false to himself, false to his church, false to the brethren and churches he seeks to mislead, or I will make him shut his mouth, which is equivalent to an acknowledgement to his false leadership of the Baptists. The churces should know the truth whether the Dr. makes his confession or not. that a certain brother (?) peddled out to his congregation recently, that McCrary had made way way with the school money, when at the same he knew that that lie had been nailed to the cross, the cashier Geo C Schneeman of the City National, in a sworn statement and the liars themselves crucified by their own hand in the presence of the Association when our reelection was announced. Since that time some of the same godly (?) men have fallen like Satan from heaven, some have lost their churches and some have kept back money entrusted to their care and some will be turned up to the gaze and ridicule of the district in a short of time unless you call a halt. Give us another boost from your pulpit Mr. muck raker, it only serves to advance our stock, they know that you are a little sycophant, and are beneath the level of a real man. In this issue of the Gazette, will be found the announcement of Samuel H. Johnson, for Highway Commissioner of district No. 6, election April 6th. Mr. Johnson, friends have been boosting him the past month as the gravel road and concrete culvert man and a man with much practical experience in building gravel roads, including the Golconda, Marion and Vienn-Roads where he helped his men put out thousand of loats of gravel while graveling miles of roads with two large crews of teams. The law was changed to one commissioner, putting him out before his term was out. Mr. Johnson is now asking the voters to elect him, to the city, he may help the teamsters gravel all roads coming to our city which will make a greater Metropolis and Massac county. He stands for contracting the big gravel jobs giving every man a square deal. He is centrally located on W. 11, street, a fine point to handle the work from. He man's his own grader, saving to the people $4 per day for better Roads, in fact, he is the better road man. We recommend that you carefully consider his worthy claims, before casting your vote. Died In Chicago. Mrs. Jessie Jarriet-Parrit, formerly of this city, died in Chicago last Sunday after a lingering illness. Her body was brought to this city Wednesday afternoon for burial, accompanied by her husband, Robert Parrit, daughter, Miss Lenora Newell, and brothers Anderson, of Chicago; Abe and niece Mary Jarriett of St. Louis, Mo. The funeral was attended at the First Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. B. McCrary, officiating. Revs. T. M. Moses, pastor read the scriptures, and S. B. Jones, pastor of the St. Paul A. M. E. church led in prayer. She was formerly a member of the above mentioned church but had connected herself to the Berean Baptist church of Chicago, and was a member at the time of her demise. She leaves another brother Oscar, of St Louis, who was not present and a number of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Masonic cemetery; beside her mother and father Mr. and Mrs. Amos Jarriett, to await the voice of God calling her forth from the dead to meet Him at his bar where just men are made perfect. A fund of $57.80 was raised by the Mt. Olive Baptist Association at Duquoin, last week through the efforts and advice of Moderator McCrary. We have a standing committee to look after this part of the work and we urge every church to establish a Penny Fund by lifting a penny collection every Sunday.
