METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE WOMAN SLAYS HUSBAND BANDITS ROB MAUL BROS. STENOGRAPHER OF $950 PAYROLL. WONAN OF 40 SLAYS HUSBAND WITH AX Says She Did Bidding of the Lord After Nine Years of Ill Treatment. Little Rock, Ark.—After having carefully prepared for her deed which she said she did at the bidding "of the Lord" Mrs. Wesley Ross, 40 years old, killed her husband with an ax while he slept at daybreak this morning at their home west of Little Rock. Nine years of cruelty and ill treatment she said when asked why she killed her husband She is in jail Nashville, Tenn. 7th & Sevier, St. Boscobel College Dear Editor:—Please allow me a space in your worthy paper to say a few words I am doing very well, but I wish to get the attention of the district thru this paper. I am asking every church and pastor to take up a special offering on the 5th Sunday in this month to help me through this session. God will bless you. Please don't forget it as I need your help. I was at Mt. Gilead Baptist church the 1st Sunday and they gave $1.05 for which it was thankfully received. Yours in Christ, Andy Lovelace. Ira Morgan, Announces In this issue of the Gazette will be found the announcement of Ira Morgan as a candidate for reelection to the office of Clerk of Road District No. 6 at the ensuing April election. Mr. Morgan needs no introduction to the voters of the district as he is well known by every voter, and we believe is held in highest esteem by all. He is completing his first term as clerk of the district and certainly he has discharged the duties of the office to the entire satisfaction of all who have had dealings with that office during his incumbancy. He is centrally located in business and one always knows just where to find him when having business with the office. If it were not that he is in a business where he can attend to the duties without great inconvenience the office's remuneration would in no sense appeal to him we are sure. The voter will make no mistake by retaining Mr. Morgan in this office. Walker's Indigestian Cure Rev. J. B. McCrary is agent for Dr. Walker's Sure cure for Indi- gestion and Dyspepsia. 50c and $1.00 bottles. $1.10 by mail. We can cheerfully recommend it. We are glad to announce the re- covery of Postmaster Stewart who has been reported critically ill with influenza. Rev. A. Lovelace, in School. Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 21 Editor of the Gazette: Please allow me through the columns of your worthy paper, that I am in the city and according to previous plans am attending the National Baptist Theologica school (unincorporated convention, every day. The School according to the advertisement of the trustees threw open its doors last Monday the 17th. A splendid program was arranged and great enthusiasm prevailed and after more than a quarter of a century of planning on the part of the Baptist they are enabled to operate the greatest Negro Baptist School in all the world. These buildings are ideal in every department. Mt Olive Baptist Association of Illinois will receive the credit of being here. I was greatly encouraged by our wide-awake moderator Rev. J. B. McCrary, who is a trustee for this school. I trust that each pastor will take a special collection at once so as to reach me here by the 1st of Dec., or of each month. Any amount will be thankfully received and the same reported in the columns of the paper. I wish to thank the pastor Rev Tuos, Morris, and the Antioch Baptist church, Metropolis; Macedonia Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, and Mr. C. V. Parker (ahite) Harrisburg, for the financial assistance and will try to make good. I am yours for the defense of the gosp-1. Rev. A. Lovelace. Cor. 7th & Sevier, Sts In care of Rev. J. L. Harding. Let each church of this district lift a collection at once and forward same to Rev. A. Lovelace, Nashville, Tenn, in care of Rev J. L. Harding Sec'y.-Treasurer. THE EDITOR Member of the National Baptist Publishing Board, Nashville, Tenn., who was declared recently by the Chancery Court, to be one of the original Board member.s He has been selected a delegate to National S. S. Congress next June to Japan. A good selection MAR 9 1920 OLIS TO: "HEW TO THE LINE, LET OPOLIS, ILLINOIS SLA BROS. Bandits Rob Girl $950 PaY Roll Two Youths Point Revolver at Miss Flora M. Droege, Stenographer for Maul Brothers, on Way from Bank and Grab Money. Miss Flora M. Droege, stenographer, for the firm of Mann Bros Macroni manufacturers of 1227 St. Louis, ave., was held up by two young highway men at Blair and St. Louis avenue yesterday morning and robbed of the firm's payroll of $950, which she had just drawn from the Northwestern Bank at 15th and St. Louis, ave. The robbery was the tenth day light payroll holdup in St. Louis, since August 9. That Miss Droege had been carefully watched and that her errand was known to the highwaymen was evident from the fact that they remained concealed in a doorway and did not appear until Miss Droege was opposite to them. One pointed a revolver at the stenographer, while the other snatched the package from her hands. Both ran east on St. Louis avenue and escaped. In the ten pay-roll robberies the to. al amount stolen exceeded $25 000. Murphysboro, Ill. Elder J. B. McCrary, was invited to conduct the services for the Mt. Gilead Baptist church of Murphysboro, the 2nd Sunday and his coming was not regretted by the members of said church. He delivered three heart felt sermons and many were made happy and praised the Lord with loud voices. A large crowd attended the services and a liberal collection was taken up. We hope to have him preach for us again in short. Mrs. A. C. Bolden. The Power of the Holy Ghost It is as if you saw a locomotive on a railway and it would not go and they put a driver and they said "now that the driver will just do" They try another and another. One purposes that such and such a wheel shall be altered, but it will not go. Someone then bursts in among those that are conversing and says, "no my friends, the reason why it will not go is because there is no fire and no water in the boiler. It will go well enough if you get the steam up." The want of the church is the Holy Spirit and until that want be supplied we may reform and reform and disturb the peace of the churches, in order to organize new associations and still be the same. But now the Morris preachers are saying "this and that must be altered." They tried to get control of the Mr. Olive Convention and association, but failed. Then --- --- they said we will go down to Cairo, and tell the churches that R H Boyd, owns the National Baptist Publishing House. But one of them said all that beleives what he said was true hold up your hands. Someone said not ready, be careful Dr. how youhandle the truth. For the scripture saith, Lying lips are abomination to Jehovah, but they that deal truly are His delight. Prov. 12:22. Men are not slaves these days but free men, and ought to be honest and true with all men. The greatest legacy a parent can leave for his child is that his church his neighborhood and the public pronounces him honest and truthful with all men. The greatest reproach a man can bring upon his children is that the common public pronounces him dishonest and untruthful. The way the earliest disciples of Christ, gained a footing and therefore brought His kingdom into prominence. Men perceived that they had been with Lord. Let us pray that it may be so with all His follower in this day. The Sunday School opened at 9:30 with Supt, Bro. A. Robinson. The friendly rivalry continues between the classes. Class no. 1 holds the banner, which was taught by Prof. W. A. Singleton. A strong gospel sermon was preached at 11 A. M. by this pastor, Rev. T. M. Moses. Text I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Heb. 5:13. Theme, the Lord is a great deliverer. 3:00 P. M. Covenant and Communion. The B. Y. P. U. met at 6:30 P. M. opened by the president, Mrs. V. Ford. The senior class was taught by Bro. Robinson. The junior class was taught by Miss Daisy Long, which is progressing nicely. 8:00 P. M. the congregation was made to rejoice by the pastor text, Did not our hearts burn within us, etc., theme, Jesus in the Midst. Matt. 28:4. Collection $26.67. There is no affiliation between the Illinois Baptist Convention and the Illinois Baptist General Association on account of "Doctrine." That was settled at our last association when they refused to send a messenger from M. Olive to the State Convention Yours in Christ, A. F. Daniels First Baptist Church. Alice Urquhart. Rev. D. Parrish, Ungrateful. Rev. D. Parrish, of Md. City, is ungrateful to the old ministers of this district, who are dead and gone, died in the belief that he would be loyal to the association over which he had been elevated by their suffrage. Rev. Allison, more thanany one minister used his influence to have him elected and kept as Moderator for several years until he was unharnessed at the association by the brethren. He made his threat that he would split the association, and every since that time he has worked hard to carry out that threat, and is now passing out circulars as a willing tool of the men whose only aim is to rule or rain. I know of your work, know of your work, know of the misrepresentations to men with whom you meet. You have repudiated your own work in order to besmear the good name and work of your co-li-brex. You have proven untrue and unkind to the men who made you. You are not true to the brethren what you are chairman of the Livingston Institute and the brethren should remove you at the next meeting for Cause, especially for trying to spread the rumor that the money of the Livingston Institute has been misappropriated by Rowlett and McCray. You fail to tell the people that under your administration that One Hundred dollars were misplaced, and that he instituted a law suit trying to recover it and employed a lawyer or or said you employed Att'y Chas. Rice, of Md. City, not only did this require more money, but that the suit was stopped with receiving the money. Why don't you be fair and tell the truth about the matter. Why did you stop the lawsuit? Tell the people. Tell them how much money has been misappropriated under my administration. Tell them when you were moderator that you did not have money for the expenses of the association. Tell them that in three years, that the association is out of debt, and have money in the treasury and One Hundred dollars in the Poor church treasury, over a Thousand dollars in the Bank, educational money. If you did not believe the sworn statement of the cashier of the Bank, when you and Rev. Davis, were in our town a few weeks ago looking after the interest of association, when you intimated that the people thought there was something wrong, when we asked you as president to go to the bank and find out for yourself, what made you say you were not looking after that, but you thought we should remove it from the bank and loan it to individuals at a higher rate of interest. When I proposed to leave it to the association why did you object and say that they did not have anything to do with it, if you are such a watch dog of the people's interest? Tell these people why, and tell them you are unworthy of the trust imposed and that you wish to blacken the re- GIRL, AGE 12 FOUND SLAIN IN SHED Virginia Walker of Springfield, Mass., is Victim of Attack. Springfield, Mass., Feb. 21. The entire police detective department is working today to run down the slayer of Virginia Walker. 12 years old, who was found dead in a shed at a creamery near her home today. The child had been attacked and had been dead several hours whea the body was found. She had been sent to the plant to get cream and her failure to return led to a search. Employees of the company, questioned by the police today, said they heard no outcry. Carral Chapel held her regular meeting with our pastor, Rev. P. L. Reynolds; good attendance. Mrs. Amanda Howl, of Cecil, Ky., departed this life Feb. 20. She was a member of White Oak church, and lived a faithful member for 20 years or more. Before death she called her children to her bed-side and told them she was going where there wouldn't be any parting and for them to meet her beyond the river Jordan, for she had gone to rest. She was loved by everyone that knew her. The funeral was attended Feb. 22, at 3:00 P. M; Rev. Reynolds, officiated. She leaves several children, grand-children and a host of friends. Peace to her ashes. Mrs Mollie Townsly, is dangerously sick this week. There will be a grand concert given at Carneal Chapel, Monday night Feb. 23, in honor of the last day of school Miss Annie Mae Senter, was the guest of Mrs. Dismukes, Sunday. Mr. Ance Heady, of Robertson town, Ky., died Tuesday afternoon Feb. 20. Heart failure was the cause of his death. He leaves to mourn his death a wife, sons, and a host of friends. He will be missed in Ballard County. Mr. Shedrick Gill, of Ballard county, was quietly married to Miss Lucy Bowls, of Nashville, Tenn. They were married at the residence of Mr. Dullie Allen, of Paducah, Ky. We hope them a happy married life. Ethelene Dance Now, I could say more, but will let the matter rest for a while. The churches and pastors that have been loyal and stood hard by the Old Mt. Olive Baptist Association in the attempt of some ministers who have attempted to split it asunder by enticing words are be commended. The Lord bless you and strengthen you. Amen. No minister or church can hold with the hare and run with the hounds. You are either with Mt. Olive Baptist association or against her. Be men; let the world know which side you are on. METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE, METROPOLIS, ILL. Carbondale. Dear Editor of the Gazette, and Brethren in the Lord. I thought that I would drop a few lines to the paper. I saw in the paper a statement that you had received a letter from the Rock Hill Baptist church. The official Board knows nothing about it. As to the new "Southern Association" is concerned we take no part with it at all; we don't believe in a split of any kind. The National Convention or the Association. We do not advocate a split and have no dealings with them that do. We are with the Old Mt. Olive, and we expect the Executive Board meeting here Thursday and Friday before the 2nd Sunday in March. Did you know that the three Associations will call for from two to three Baptist churches in every town? And that is too much. There should be but one Baptist church in each town, so that it can take care of itself and no one would be in a strain. I am in favor of One Lord, One Faith and One Baptist church in every town. Yes we still love the Old Mt. Olive Baptist Association the one that was organized years ago with the following good men: Elders F. Robinson, H. Allison, S. Wilson, J. H. Knowles, I. W. Winston, D. Parker, and others too numerous to mention. It was good for them should it not be good for us? and if it is not what it ought to be why not make it what it should be? . We hope to write more next time. W. D. Parran Clerk of R. H. Bapt. Church Alfred Armor, D. Harmon, T. Adams, W. B. Isom, E. Davis officers. Notice. The Mt. Olive Baptist S, S. Institute will hold a meeting with the 2nd Baptist church, Centralia, Ill. March 19-21 or 25 28 1920. Watch for program. J. B. Olive Baptist association, that have not gone into the "Olive association" to meet with Executive Board, Ministers and Deacon's Union, Women's and Educational Convention at Carbondale with Rock Baptist church, Thursday and Friday before the Second Sunday in March, 1920 This will be our first meeting this year and there will be much important business to transact. We ask that the churches send their pastor and one messenger to do business for the Lord and Mt. Olive Baptist association. Come singing and praying for the spiritual and financial success of this meeting. Send up $1.00 for expense of meeting, also bring some money for missions. Yours in Him, J. B. McCrary, J. D. They also take the Bible and nothing else but the Bible as their only law and rule. Recognizing Christ as the head of the church of which He was the organizer. From the number of letters received from churches, laymen and ministers the Mt. Olive Association is save and will continue to do bustness at the same old stand regardless of the Souther preachers who have effrontery and nerve to try to lead us of a trained brain and regenerated heart. We will work and vote for men to be officers of the association that are true and tried men in a crisis. We are expecting our State Missionary, Elder H. E.
