METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE TWO NEW SCHOOL HOUSES FOR METROPOLIS, $62,000.00 FOUR MORE KILLED BY WOOD ALCOHOL Arrests Are Predicted by Coroner in St. Paul Tragedies. St. Paul Minn., March 3. Four deaths from drinking wood alcohol occurred in St Paul last night and today Coroner C. A Ingerson said that arrests might be expected. Neil and Patrick Mullen, brothers, died in a rooming house. Martin Barrett, a railroad man, succumbed at his home. An unidentified man was the fourth victim. $62,000.00 Bond Issue For School Buildings In Metropolis, Carried. The Sixty-two Thousand Dollars School Bond Issue that was voted on last Saturday in Metropolis, to build two-new school houses, one for the colored and the other for white carried by a large majority, about 34 voting against and the proproposition and more than 500 voting for it. What the colored people have been contending for was, for an equal break with the whites along Educational lines. We wish to thank the Board of Education, Co. Supt., Evers, Pres., J. L. Neville, the Daily News, Republican Herald, Prof. Singleton, and the good citizens for the interest taken in Educational work. The Colored Citizen's Committee wish to thank Messrs. Dick Hensley, Will Adams, and George McCrary, for using their cars in carrying the voters to the polls without any charge and ask the citizens to remember them in their line of business, as a friend in need is a friend in deed: J. B. McCrary, Pres. Delbert Moore, Sec'y. H. C. Williams Anuounces A card announcing the candidacy of H. C. Williams, for Road Commissioner of District No. 6 will be found in this issue of the Gazette. Mr. Williams, is the present Commissioner of this district. He has this served District 3 terms as Commissioner, and he has had 30 years experience in handling men on Public works and has roads in 9 different states. Beside road work, he graded Fort Massac Park, a piece of work he is justly proud of. He has no farm and can put in his entire time in looking after the roads. Mr. Williams, does not deny that he wants the office for the salary, it pays, but assures the people he will give them value received in service. Editor of the Gazette: Please allow me through the columns of your worthy paper, that I am in the city and according to previous plans am attending the National Baptist Theologica school (unincorporated convention, every day. The School according to the advertisement of the trustees threw open its doors last Monday the 17th. A splendid program was arranged and great enthusiasm prevailed and after more than a quarter of a century of planning on the part of the Baptist they are enabled to operate the greatest Negro Baptist School in all the world. These buildings are ideal in every department. Mt Olive Baptist Association of Illinois will receive the credit of being here. I was greatly encouraged by our wide-awake moderator Rev. J. B. McCrary, who is a trustee for this school. I trust that each pastor will take a special collection at once so as to reach me here by the 1st of Dec., or of each month. Any amount will be thankfully received and the same reported in the columns of the paper. I wish to thank the pastor Rev Thos. Morris, and the Antioch Baptist church, Metropolis; Macedonia Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, and Mr. C. V. W Ferguson, of St. Louis, Mo. were quietly married Monday evening at St. Loius.. The bride is a clerk in the office of the St. Louis Argus. The groom is a well known St. Louisan They will reside in St Louis. Mrs. Ferguson was a tpyo in our for several years. She is a graduate of Dunbar High School of this city and is loved by all. The Gazette staff joins her many friends in wishing them a happy and prosperous life. The colored people of Choat, are to have a new school eouse, all their own accoeding to the vote on the Bond issue last Saturday which passed witouth a vote being cast in opposition. To the Gazette:— Dear Editor, as it has been some time since you have heard from this part of the district. I drop a few lines to the readers. We have been raising from One Hundred to One Hundred and twenty dollars per month all winter. Are planning for a revival on the 3rd Sunday. We are working to have a rally in June and hope to raise money enough to raise money enough to build a parsonage The ladies are doing a great work, also the Sewing circle under the lead of Sister F Norment, Willing workers under Sister Bettie Cobb, are raising money every Thursday afternoon. Now as to the split, we need not worry about it. I have seen and heard from some of the members of some of the churches that A New School House. Mounds. III. went out with those wrong leaders and they are very much dissatisfied and so time will bring all things right. As to Rev. Olive, I would not follow him anywhere, not to a dog fight and those who started with him will soon get tired. He told some of my members not to say anything to me, that I belonged to that other "Click" thus you see by his own speech, that he styles himself and those who are with him a "Click," by using the words "That other Click," meaning he don't belong to my "Click." I belong to a regular organized Association and as you say, not to your "Click." He also said I was the treasurer and had a chance to "Rattle money in my pockets." That is true again, but it is more than I would have if I belonged to your "Click" according to the records of the National Baptist Convention (Incorporated) in 1915 at the Chicago, Baptist upheaval. They had no money with which to "Rattle" "You hear me." That was the reason for you and your "Click" trying to take charge of the National Baptist Publishing Board, (Unincorporated) 523 2nd Ave., N., Nashville, the Mt. and East Mt. Olive S, S. Conventions and Associations, because you knew they had some money to "Rattle" and you and your "Click" are trying to get hold of it, not to "Rattle" no, no, but to squander ast your records shows, but the courts and the honest thinking people have placed the mark upon you and your "Click" cannot be trusted with the money of the Baptists, we have honest people to handle our money you are self confessed "Clicksters," "Tricksters" and "Ringsters," we know of your records and we are afraid to trust you. A WHITE MAN ASSAULTS BURGLARS SCATTER HIS OWN DAUGHTER SNUFF TO THWART BLOODHOUNDS Cape Gireaueau, Mo. Feb. 25. Louis Sherrell, 38 years old, is under arrest here charged with at tacking his 13 year-old daughter, Lois. His arrest followed a disclosure made by the girl to Mrs. Elizabeth Cowan, housekeeper in Sherrell's home. The announcement of Sherrell's arrest has created intense feeling and mob violence is feared. Chief of Police Segraves has sworn in extra guards at the jail. March 3 — Burglar gained entrance to the Post Office here early today, robbed the safe of more than $2,000 in cash, Liberty bonds and stamps, and escaped after spreading a quantity of snuff in their wake, assumedly to prevent bloodhounds taking up their trail. Editorial. By Dr. C. C. Phillips, Golconda, Ill. Dr. J. J, Olive, "The accuser and abuser" of the Brethren said in an article in this paper a short time after the adjournment of the Association held with the Mt. Olive Baptist church Colp, Sept. 1919, among other things; "The Asso n. was a grand affair." During the organization of (His Association.) in Cairo, Feb. 11, 12, he denounced both Associations, and charged them with all manner of corruption. It is up to Dr. Olive, to tell the reading public whether or not he told the train when he said, the Mt. Olive Association was a grand affair, or did he tell the truth, when he said on the floor that both Associations were corrupt? How could he say with with good conscience, that the East Mt. Olive Association is corrupt, when he has never attended a session? For man would talk that way about an organization that he knows nothing of, except some one that is illbred, with, a teaming imagination of his wisdom; and bristling over with ego for leadership. We challenge him to make good his assertion or stan d convicted of wilful false hood. We have no inclination to dig up the pass, if we did we would not have to go no further than Dr. Olive's camp to find it. The so called State Convention now withinolds One Hundred dollars of the Metropolis Livingston School funds and $6. of our own money is in that amount; $9. or Dr. J. P. Thomas', Chicago; $5 to State Missionary, H. E. McWilliams, and a number of other bretien whose names we cannot recall. Moreover he is lined up with the "Dr. Morris, Incorporated Convention" of which Dr. Stokes of Ala., is Treas., who reported to the Auditor of their own Convention that he hadn't a receipt for the money that he had paid out. Thousands of dollars had been paid out too. We dare not say that Dr. Stokes or any body else misappropriated one dollar of the money, but whether he or they did or not they were not able to account to the Convention for the money that paid out. Let Dr. Olive, the mote hunter cast the beam out of his own eye, then it may be that he can see the mote in the brethren's eye. He with a number of other hoodwinked dupes, are still circulating the story that "Boyd, has stolen the Publishing house from the Baptist." The Courts have said different. Judge Wilson, of Tenn., before whom Cherry's soil was tried; and mark you the case was takenup from Chanceller's Court to Judge Wilson's Court, which confirmed the decree of the lower Court and among other things that Dr. Boyd, and the Board were only the cus-foians of the property, holding it in trust for the Baptists, And that the evidence disclosed the fact that everything were run according to the law. He farther said that Dr. E. C. Morris, did not find any fault with the management of it, but the only question was that of control. If we have misrepresented anything in this write up let Dr. Olive show it, and we will gladly make our confession thru the public p. The Baptist churches have a perfect right to organize; but we hardly think there is one that would organize upon fraudulent bosses if they knew it. The Baptist Truth gave Dr. Olive the credit for this organization, and we do so. Every foot-print upon the Broad Highway points to this man who must have leadership cost what it may. We have received many encouraging letters as to our stand for the Old time Baptist Faith, from laymen and the clergy not only in our Discrict, but thruout Illinois, telling us they are with us. Olive Baptist Association, President of the S. S. Convention, President of B. Y. P. U. and all other good Baptist, Greeting:—Having been elected President of the Ministers' and Deacous' Union of Southern Illinois, I feel it my duty to call your attention to the same and assure you, that as such I shall put forth my best efforts to bring this district up to that standard of efficiency that stamps every department of our district work. I know that we cannot even hope for the best unless we join heart and hand, conceit our action and pull together. We must ever remember that in order to win the world for Christ the leaders in each District, must put his shoulder to the wheel, recoguize safe leadership and urge upon his constituents a ready response to every denominational demand. The preacher who was foremost being prompted by a number of preachers who wanted our place in the district that we had allowed Rev. Rowlett, treas., of Livingston Institute to squander the money seemed to have left the State with money belonging to the church having confidenced them. But we are still doing business at the same old stand. We failed to let them get their hands on this money, that Baptists and people placed into our hands. The way of the transgressor is hard. Rev. W. H. Carter, preached one of his masterpiece sermons on Sunday morning and the choir rendered a matchless program in the evening. We report with much regret the death of Sister Beulah Anderson, 816 E. Rexford Ave. She was a an active member in the church and a renown Sunday School teacher. The church and school misses her presence as she was a regular attendant. Rev. Carter, delivered a splendid sermon; J. W. Corneal, Supt., sang a Solo; and the choir rendered excellent music. I am going to stand by the principles of the Baptist church and not by a man or set of men if they are in keeping with His word. There is no use for churches to send men to school and setting them apart to preach the gospel find no place or room for employment but will employ men who are strangers and about the first only they do is increase his salary raise a row with the poor old ministers who worked and sacrafaced time, talent and money to erect modern houses of worship, for our children, then they tell the churches we are able to build but men like them to occupy the house and to preach to them, run the Associations and S. S. conventions and we don't turn the churches and other institutions we have established over to them, we are branded as fighters, incompetent, selfish and many of our people believe them and endorse their ungodly acts to their everlasting disgrace and shame in the end. The churches gave me a schooling for pastorial work, and being well known to them and not a stranger, why don't the churches who are without pastors call me? who has prepared myself for just the kind of work needed, not tear Associations and break peace in churches and communities, such as is being done by some of the strangers. Ill Having scanned Dr. Olive's answer to my Circular letter in the Baptist Truth, since my last write up in answer to his personal letter to me; I deem it proper to answer his Baptist Truth allegations. Not that I can save him, for he is joined to his (E. C Morris) idol, but to save the people he is attempting to mislead. First of all, we speak what we truly mean, taking for granted that to whom we speak is possessed with some horse sense I am ready to meet Dr. Olive in his church, or anywhere else, to discuss the District, State and National condition of our Baptist Zion, if he will be goverened by admonition of Bro. Paul, in First Cor. 14:40; That all things be done decently and in order. But it we are to fight and make brutes and beasts of ourselves, my calling is too high; and my responsibility is too great. How can they hear without a preacher? In Drs. Olive's first paragraph; he starts off with a perversion of the truth by stating the amount given to nine churches, and makes his calculation covering 25 years, extending the time back to a date when the East Mt. Olive Association did not exist; only to pervert the truth. The Dr. forgets that the National Baptist Convention (Incorporated) to which he seeks to do honor, by disrupting the Baptists of Illinois, by the organization of a Southern Association, existed Twenty years with Thousand of dollars brought up annually at every session and the administration building air castles on paper, to keep the financial stream running. But when the crisis came in Chicago, in 1915, and the condition of things was made known to the Baptists America, the money was spent which was raised by the Baptist of this country for twenty years, and from the Convention's own efforts, they did not have as much as a Stand table upon which they could write a communication, with an indebtednes to Pres., E. C. Morris, of Ten Thousand Dollars, and to the Secretary Eighteen Hundred Dollars, more or less. Now Dr., if you are to give honor to the said Convention, and want the Baptist of Illinois to do likewise, you should tell them where all the money went that was raised by the Baptists of America for Twenty years, and why they still owe Morris Ten Thousand Dollars, and the Secretary Eighteen Hundred Dollars more or less? Before you ask a little District or State Association what has become of what money they have raised, or you will make us believe that you are trying to play your National trick on our District and State Associations, for the interest of the same old guard that has robbed the Baptists of America for twenty years. Now, since the above is true; and you are doing honor to the same old guard, tell the Illinois Baptist what you object is for wanting us to continue pouring our money in a rat hole? Are you promised a percent of the money that you collect, and carry up to the Incorporated Convention? I do not see what else could induce you, for there is no show for any expenditure of money to advance anything, or anybody, except those who st as chairmen and those who keep the books. Dr. Stokes, the treasurer of your Convention, told the Auditor of your Convention, that he paid the money out, and did not have any receipts to show what for, nor who to. My Dear Dr, answering an other perversion of the Truth in your answer is, that you found the division when you firt came to the State. There was no divisin among the Baptist churches on the National Question when you came to the State. To prove this statement to any sane mind I have only to refer you to the records of the Minutes of the Mt. Olive Association, of the session held in Mounds Illinois, Sept. 1915, at which session strong Resolutions were passed, without a dissenting vote, cr voice condemning the (7) seven men, that assumed the dictatorship of the Baptist, by getting out a Federal Charter, without the knowledge or consent of the Baptist to take over things (Publishing, Board) and control it as they pleased. That does not look like a Division among the Baptist of Illinois. Dr. Olive, says the division was here when he came to the State, which you can see was untrue according to the records of the Mt. Olive Association, just mentioned. The Doctor's 4th proposition to sustain his lease work, and living as a Baptist, and to bribe the judgment of the unthinking rabble among Baptists; he breaks in great surprise, that a Baptist preacher had no better sense than to think a Convention could Ordain a preacher, or that the Communion was given in a Convention. We thank you Dr., but I am just as much surprised to know that a a Baptist Convention, or a Baptist Association, would be in accord with any church, or churches that accept a minister or ministers to full fledged membership from any Pedo Baptist church, without said minister or ministers confessing to the Faith once delivered to the Saints, thereby doing violence to the vital, and Fundamental Doctrine, and principles of the "One Lord, One Faith, and the One Baptism," thereby objecting the Organic Federation, but accepting Federation of Faiths. This is our surprise. I knew Conventions and Associations do not ordain ministers, nor do they give the Sacrament, I mean Baptist Bodies but they stand by the Doctrine and principles, legislated by Jesus Christ, and practices by the real Baptist churches down to this good day. Dr. Olive, Why do you not tell the forces that you are leading, that the S. S. Convention of the East Mt. Olive Baptist Association while in session at Shawneetown last June, informed you, that if you, or your church, or any other church, or individual, wanted their Mission money, or Educational money, or any other money to go to the Morris wing of the National Convention, that they only had to say in their letters, though they were representing in our District or State Association, their money would go where their letters directed.
