METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE U. STATES BONE DRY. GENERAL BAPTIST STATE ASSOCIATION NOW HISTORY THE BAPTIST MESSENGER THE MOUTH-PIECE FOR THE GEN. BAPTIST STATE CONVEN- Rev. L. K. Williams Comes Thru With Another Rank Falsehood BY C. C. Phillips, Golconda The Messenger farther says, there will be some other Baptist Bodies soon in the State if some of the other brethren in the minority do not cease their wily tactics. The Messenger, here serves notice that the Bitter Enders to the National Baptist Convention Unincorporated are going to try to make an other split in the State for the Morris convention. Hear what it farther says. The Messenger does not believe in neutrals and when you find a neutral on this denomination contest, scratch him and you will find he is secretly branded "Boydism." To this we reply, when you find an individual checky, brassy, and disgusting enough to claim a majority when they have a very small minority and caused to be published that 29 of the best churches in the state have been organized into a new Zion Assn., when they have only three large ones and only 6 or 7 little mission churches so to speak; you may put him down as not Morrism, but as a rank hum-bug and a church disaster, instead of a pastor with no regard whatever for the truth. Hear the writer again, they believe not in Boydism and Boardism, but the will of the majority, Dr. Boyd is Cor. Sec'y. of the Board and the charter of that Board which is subscribed to by Dr. E. E. Morris reads in part. But in all things to be governed by the rules and regulations of the concession of the Baptist churches or nomination so far as same are consistent with the constitution and laws of State of Tennessee and these United States. This is Boydism and Boardism. The laws of the denomination etc. are safedarded. But the Washington charter of which the Dr. Morris convention is under reads in part. This corporation shall take over the rights, powers, privileges, and property interests, control asses, claim demands and liabilities. This corporation is under no obligation to respect neither church convention nor association but 7 then absorbs the entire rights and powers of the whole Baptist streng. Art. iv. The number of directors who shall have the management of the affairs of this corporation for the first year of its existence shall be 7. Who is this corporation? A, the 7, who are directors? The 7, who are they that shall say what number the corporation shall be? The 7, who does the by-laws and fixes the date of meeting? The 7 Art. v. does them the right to take over the Publishing Board. Mission boards and the Women's Auxillia Board and all the other Boards but they are not looking at none at the Publishing and Women's boards. This is what is called wisdom of the denomination by Bitter Enders. They call these MOTTO: "HEW TO THE LINE, LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY." seven men the denomination. There are others that are standing by the stuff. Last but not least Elders Daniels, Cole, Carter, Norment, Norton, Taborn, Brown, Green, Stovall, and Scates and a number of other that time and space forbids us to speak of. C. Wilson, editor of the Baptist Truth is amqng the wicked prophets. He alers in his editorial column that the New Zion Association is the result of the trouble between R. H. Boyd and the National Baptist Convention over the control and ownership of the National Baptist Publishing Plant. In this connection he connects the the officials of the Mt. Olive and East Mt. Olive Ass'n, with the "Steam Roller" process etc. We will agree with him in this truth; and that is the district trouble grew out of the National controversy and not that the officials are thieves and robbers. This has been our content on all the while. We thank the editor very much continued on page 4. Evening Session 7:30 Devotionals-Mt. Olive, Duqnoh, Mt. Adjournment --- DO YOU WANT A GOURT RULES U. S. BROOM FACTORY? BONE DRY Prof. S. Cuaningham, of Evansville, Ind., is in the city trying to interest our people in a broom factory industry for Metropolis similar to the Quality Broom Co. of Evansville, which would employ some of our boys and girls who are coming out of school annually. The Negro must wake up to the responsibility that confronts him and be producers as well as consumers, save some of his earnings, organize as our white neighbors have done and are doing and make room for the future generation. The white man feels he can't bear our burdens any longer after more than fifty years of freedom. Put confidence in yourself and your men and women who are able and to give advice and are putting out their money and using their energies in solving the "Race Problem" which has been proven that the Negro must enter into the field of industrial, commercial as well as professional fields. Until we are do this we will be looked upon as a back number and the least a mong the races of the earth. Now let us put confidence in own sons and daughters as the Negroes are doing elsewhere and build up strong institutions in Massac county. General State Association The seventh annual session of the General Missionary Baptist Association convened with the Shitok Baptist church Murphysboro, Thursday morning May 20, every arrangement for the comfort of the ministers and messengers necessary made by the pastor Dr. W. P. Washington and his good members. Moderator J. F. Thomas, D. D. of Chicago presided. The committee on enrollment reported 40 churches represented by 85 messengers. The corresponding secretary Dr S. Gipson was absent and Dr. W. Henry Snowden was appointed to fill out his term. Rev. J. E Royal resigned as clerk and Dr. M. L. Porter was elected to fill out the term. Dr. E. P. Jones, spoke on the state paper that will be published in the interest of the State Association. Dr. G. H. McDaniels offered a resolution on the Bible in the public school. It was adopted and forwarded to the Constitutional Convention at Springfield. The committee on Constitution submitted their report, with few exceptions it was adopted as read. The Association re-affirmed its stand for genuine Baptist principles by a rousing vote. No open communion, no alien emersion, no federation, no receiving of excluded members from other churches unless the greatest wrong has been done, and the church refuse to grant them another hearing. A resolution was offered and adopted which creates a state Su- AMENDMENT 18 AND VOL STEAD LAW UPHELD VALID Decision of Bench Is Unanimous. The Supreme court battle over brobhibition ended in complete victory for the drys Monday June 8. The Supreme court of the United States, in a sweeping decision today, covering both th eighteenth amendment and the Volstead enforcement act, held both of these legislative enactments constitutional. The decision was practically unanimous. Justice McKenna delivered a dissenting opinion on the "concurrent power" issue, and Chief Justice White and Justice McReynolds criticised certain features of the law, but their objections were so slight that they did not deliver minority decisions, but announced their concurrence in the conclusions of the court. Mounds. ill. Please allow me space in your worthy paper to say a few words about the New Bethel S. S. We are moving along nicely. Sunday the pastor, Rev. J. H. Hilley, preached two strong sermons. The S. S. messengers are Sisters Della Hill and Lora Muskwalley. We want to make the S. S. Convention of the Mt. Olive Association the best in the history of its organization at Md City this year. Come fully prepared to do your full duty on the program, whether your name appears or not. Come with that peace and harmony Spirit regardless to what our opposers may say. The prospects are bright for a large attendance at the Big S. S convention which meets with the 1st Baptist church, Md. City, Wednesday before the 4th Sunday in June. Every School who wants to see the work of their foreparents succeed will be there with money and prayers to help boost the good work along that was begun nearly a half century ago. Let the outside world and other denominations know that we belieee in denominational development more than we do individuality and the destroying work of those who are dead in order to boost some office seeking so-called Baptist and petty jealousies. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! The Mt. Olive S. S. Convention will meet in Md. City, Wednesday before the 4th Sunday in June. Subscribe for the Gazette. It depends largely as to the view one takes to right and wrong, much depends upon one's training. We have received many encouraging letters as to our stand for the Old time Baptist Faith, from laymen and the clergy not only in our Discrict, but thruout Illinois, telling us they are with us. We have the everlasting words of Christ, telling us He would be with us always, and to preach the Gospel, and we do though the heavens fall. Thanks for words of confidence. Walker's Indigestian Cure. METROPOLIS WEEKLY GAZETTE, METROPOLIS, ILL. We pity that soul whose religion will not bind him sufficiently strong enough to enable him to rise above his evil companions sufficiently high and long enough to allow his light, (life) to shine forth to illuminate tho pathway of some poor sinner that will lead him into that path that shines more and more until the perfect day We have several good preachers that are idle that would make good pastors if they were given a chance. Every church large or small should have a pastor, and carry out the great commission of Jesus. Ye should be doers of his word and not hearers only. Heed this message and herald it to the lost and benighted world. Every church door in Southern Illinois should be thrown open at least twice every Sunday that the gospel might be preached to every creature. Let none hear you idly saying there is nothing you can do while the souls of men are dying all around you without any hope for the future life and happiness. Any church needing a good pastor and a splendid preacher. a man of high ideals and broad vision, we can recommend Rev. Jno. Bruen, of Mt. Vernon, Ill., who successfully pastored Shiloh Baptist church of that city for 5 consecutive years. His address is 1011 Herbert, St. The old Mt. Olive has a foundation and a record behind it, as it was founded on solid facts and not on hate and misrepresentation. Its early founders stood for something in the days of yore: "Wos unto the Shepherd that divice my sheep." We are sorry that a number of our life long friends and members of 12th street, Mt. Moriah and Mt. Pleasant Baptist churches suffered themselves to leave the record they have made for these many years to follow after strangers. Md. City. Ill. April 13, 1920. To the Moderator of the, Mt. Olive Baptist Association and to whom it may concern: This certifies that the 1st Baptist church of Md. City asks that the Mt. Olive S. S. Convention convene with us Wednesday before the 4th Sunday in June. Rev. C. W. Cole, pastor. Mary E. Daniel, clerk. Genuine Baptists do not federate with anything, but stands out clear cut for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, upon his word He would build his church and the gates of hell should not destroy it. Let us add here that all the combined forces of men cannot uproof the Church of Christ, or loose it from its moorings, neither can principalities, heights, nor depths, peril, or sword, nor world's upon world's persuade a child of God move him from trusting in God. There is a fixed principle in his soul that serves as an anchor to a child born of God. Thos. Dunn, of St. Louis, Mo while enroute to Memphis, Tenn. where he is employed by the Moss Timber Co., was the guest of Miss Georgia Mac Garrett of 913 Pearl, To W. E. M. Society. Dear Co-Workers, of the W. E. M. Society of the Mt. Olive Baptist Association, I am asking you through the Gazette, to write me a personal letter of your desire Where are 'you? Will you not rise' and shine for Jesus? Can't you hear Aim calling you as loud as peals of thunder. The harvest is great but the laborers are few? Go work in my vineyard, are his words. Be like Nehemiah, tell them that you are doing a great work and you can't We shall try and make this Associational year a banner one Wake up and let us go over the top for God First be sure that you are right and go ahead. Read Heb. 12.1, if we obey that verse we will have no time to do anything to any body, talk or write about anybody, only that which is good or edifying or will lift up some one. I hope that all the churches that were in the Mt. Olive Baptist Association are still with the old mother. I believe that you are, if not I love you still. I ask the pastors of our district to let us look in on you at your earliest convenience. Yours for the Master, Laura A. Leake, Pres., of Dist. W. E. & M. 603 Cormick St., Centralia, Ill. Pressed glass was invented by an amble carpenter of Sandwich, Mass., but in the primitive state of affairs it profited him little. More than 200 years ago a Bohemian glassmaker conceived the idea of making cut glass. This idea was destined to revolutionize the entire glass industry of the world. The inventor began by making the walls of the article on which he was working thicker than he was wont so that he might cut the glass with a sharp knife into figures as he chose. Isom Gray. 2nd St. between Ferry- Metropolis Notice To the Pastors, Teachers and all Sunday School workers of the East Mount Olive Baptist Sunday School conventions. Dear co workers; It becomes my very pleasant duty, to remind you of the near approach of our Sunday School convention which will convene in Mt. Vernon, Ill. June 23 to 27, 1920 at 9:30 It is our very earnest hope that this will be the greatest session in the history of this noble, noble body. God has wonderfully blessed us since our organization, it has grown both numerically and spiritually, but it has not accomplished all that we hope. We are asking the co-operation and encouragement of the pastors first, for without them we cannot hope to succeed, therefore, let each pastor use his influence to have their Sunday School workers to meet with us this year, that they may be inspired by the study of methods and exchange of views upon Sunday School topics, to return home and do better work in the training for service. Pastor T. J. Bruce, the preach- and artist has decorated the church elaborately for the convention, it is truly a thing of beauty. The people are sparing no pains to make your stay pleasant, and they should be amply repaid by a wide awake, soul inspiring, and spirit filled meeting. There should no longer be a simply get-together meeting for pleasure and recreation but we should meet to glorify God and put forth every effort to help the pastor and people where we meet to extend the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Let us come full of sunshine and of the spirit of service. Yours in His name. Major Singleton. Dear sisters and co-workers: I am asking that each circle of the East Mt. Olive District to get busy and bring up $2.50 this year over and above the annual dues, which is $2.50 making a total of $5.00. We want to do more for foreign mission this year than ever before. Let this be the banner year. This is the plan I hope your circles will accept. Begin this month and raise .50 each month until the month of June. If your circle has five active members that will be .10c per month above the monthly dues if your circle has 10 active members that would be 5c; now this is to be paid once a month by this plan. Each circle can bring up the annual meeting $5.00 within 90 days. Report to me how you are getting along. Mrs Mattie Alair, 927 R. No MO To the editor: Mrs Mattie North, Pres. Notice. MOUNDS. AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COLORED PEOPLE We wish to say to our people of Massac County, and the surrounding territory, thereto. Having been solicited by a number of my people, also encouraged by some of my white friends who wish to see, and help secure employment for all returning soldiers, to enter the Undertaking business. I have finally decided to go into that business, with a view of serving my people, as well as having an employment, feeling that I can give them better service than members of the other race, though I am in friendly relation with all the other undertakers, and expect to retain that relationship throughout my business career.
