Wood River Baptist
B. N. Murrell, Cor. Secretary Quincy, Ill.
I give here "a historical sketch" of the Association: The association was organized in St. Clair county, Ill., on April 27, 1839, at the home of Samuel Vinceus, with the following churches represented: Union Baptist, Alton, Ill.; the churches at Ridge Prairie and Ogle Creek. The first meeting of the association was held in the Mt. Zion Baptist church of Ridge Prairie, Madison county, Ill., on Friday, Sept 13, 1839, Elder John Livingston, moderator.
The annual session of the Wood River Baptist association to be held in the Eighth and Elm street Baptist church beginning August 29, 1921, will be the 82nd annual meeting of the organization. The corresponding secretary is giving out this historical data that the constituency of the association may be be set right as to the correct date when the association was organized. The dates given on the minutes of the sessions for years are incorrect. This fact was discovered in 1912. There was an effort made to thoroughly acquaint the charches of the district with this information but the change brought about in 1914 by the death of aged workers (having valuable records in their possession) and pastors going to other states, throttled the effort.
Not yet are the minutes ready for the press. The delay is not due to any indifference or neglect of mine. The pastors and churches are assured that just as soon as all necessary records can be had and those turned over to be verified the manuscript will go to the press.
Very respectfully yours,
B. N. Murrell,
812 N. 8th St., Quincy, Ill.
Twenty Fourth Year
With this issue of the Gazette it enters its 24th year, having been running successfully since March 4th 1898. With J B. McCrary, founder and publisher. He decided the first of the year to turn the publication of the paper over to his wife, son and daughter-in-law, and give his entire time to the ministry. From this issue on they will have full charge of the paper. They will endeavor to put the paper on a more solid financial basis. All persons who owe for the paper are requested to make immediate payment to Mrs. M. J. McCrary, manager, those failing to pay with in the next ten days will be dropped from the list and the account placed in the hands of a collector. We thank all those who have supported this paper so long and ask for the new management the same good will and patronage that was given to us.
Respectfully yours,
J. B. McCrary.

The revival which is being conducted at the Macedonia Baptist church by Rev. Dorsey, of Carbondale, Ill. who preached several strong sermons. We are thankful to have such strong gospel sermons, he preached only sound
coctrine, which reached the hearts of men.
The Sunday School is getting on nicely. Our pastor Rev. C. W. Scates is doing all he can to bring souls to Christ. There is a great revival being held at the A. M. E. church. The revival was conducted by Rev. Miller.

How Woman Professor Compared Intelligent Negroes to The Whites.
Pittsburg, Pa. Feb. 16.—What is superiority? Is it a matter of color? A woman professor in an Eastern school thinks not, and she proceeded to tell her class, and The Leader comments most interestingly on her point of view and what happened following her expression:
She said, "that a physically perfect, well educated, intelligent Negro, of sterling moral character, undoubtedly is superior to a physically imperfect, unintelligent, uneducated, low-moralized white man. This by way of emphasis of her biological point that the claims of the individual, plant or animal, cannot be submerged or lost in the claims of the mass, whether plant species or human races. The point she stressed was that the question in such cases is not of the race in its totality, but individual specimens of the race.
This was not in Mississippi county, Arkansas, but the large medical college in a large and by courtesy, intelligent, educated and civilized city of the Atlantic seaboard. It might be supposed that medical students concerned exclusively with biological factors would listen to such a verbal illustration and grasp its purpose and point. It might be supposed that medical students would have intelligence enough to seize the essentials of this illustration—merely to drive the scientific point—and make it available to more advanced knowledge and thought.
"The supposition would be wrong—all wrong. The class—sophomore be in name could not at first believe in name could not at first believe it had heard the professor right. But the more her words were recalled and pondered the more convinced the students became that they had remembered correctly a good Negro is better than a bad white man.
The students held a meeting. They decided they could not in justice to themselves to any more instructions of that kind. They protested. They demanded that the assistant professor retract the teaching, apologize to the class or resign."
In Memoriam
Which the past could ere erase.
He had come to search for health,
'Round mother's quiet place to pray,
And from thence his greater wealth,
MOTTO: "HEW TO THE LINE, LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY."
COMING!
The Negro's Famous Orator. See him and above all Hear him! Don't Forget Day and Date.
In the happier land far away.
He had come aye the earth,
Visibly the spirit called,
Though unseen of etheral birth.
Wafting soft good bye,
To wife, mother-in-law and all.
Susie Freeman.

Warning to the Negro Public of America
A man claiming to be Prince Madarikan Deniyi, alleged to be a native Prince of Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa, is traveling through the United States lecturing to the Colored people and asking for financial help. This man appeared in Liberity Hall, New York, some months ago and received a public collection from the Negroes of this city, stating that he was a native prince of Africa and that he was about to return to Africa to work in the cause of his people.
Information to hand proves that this man is not a prince from Africa, he is an impostor. It is now alleged that he is a propagandist receiving money to preach disunity among American and West Indian Negroes so that the educated Negroes of this Western Hemisphere may not concentrate upon the redemption of Africa, but allow the White Nations of Europe to control and exploit the contrinent.
All Negro organizations and chinches are asked to look out for this map.
Notice is hereby given that the Executive Board of the Mt. Olive Baptist Association will convene with the St. John Baptist church Mounds, Friday before the 3rd Sunday in March. 1921 With Rev. C. W. Norment, pastor Please send up money for Missionaries and for expense of the Board, Let make this meeting a success Rev. C. W. Cole, Cor. Sec. J. B. McCray, Moderator.
Notes by the Wayside
By Dr. C. C. Phillips Goleonda Ill. Feb. 19 h 1921.
On the tenth we preached a few nights for the Mount Pleasant Baptist church Goleonda, of which Eld. A. J. Bowers is pasto ; there was a general awakening and one convert, the finance was good.
We have not been advised as to the amount of money that was raised. From there we Sundayed with pastor H. J. Norton and his church Carrier Mills, they are doing nicely, they are preparing to entertain the East Mount Olive Baptist Association. They are repairing their church too which will be at a considerable cost.
We closed a very profitable board meeting with the Shiloh Baptist church Colp. Elds. J. D. Davis and D. L. Braxton presiding mod. Eld. J. D. Davis, opened the meeting with a good sermon, Eld. D. L. Braxton president of the Institute reflected credit on himself and the body, as well as mod Davis. We have heard from the following churches:—Murphys boro, Hallidaysboro, Carbondale, Pittsburg, Marion, Shawneetown, Golconda and Dewmaine. Quite a number of the deacons as well as ministers attended the meeting.
Dr. W. P. Washington preached a good sermon, in fact all of the brethren preached well. Money collected from all sources $132.50 and there is a little money in the treasure to do a little charity for the aged minister's of the denomination. St. John church of which Rev W. M. Bell is pastor said, they were not at the top of the hill but we are rising.
To the Women's auxiliary convention of the General State Association, my dear sisters:
There is only three months until we meet at Evanston, Ill. and let us come siuging for a great meeting spiritual and financial. Our five departments are very much in need of finance as follows:
(1) Home Mission
(2) Foreign Mission
(3) Education

(5) Convention Expense.
I am asking every sister to send $100 for the work. Sisters let us watch, work and pray.

Sunday School Institute
The Sunday School Institute was a grand meeting. The spirit of God was manifested in many ways. The subjects were ably handled by the conductor of the Bible Conference, Rev. Wm. Moody, of Carbondale. The first subject, 'How to study the Bible,' was made plain by Rev Moody. He suggested that the Bible should be read by books, viz Law, Prophecy, Poetry, and Doctrine. He explained the divisions of Psalms as follows:
1st Division 1-41
2nd '' 42-72
3rd '' 73-86
4th '' 90-106
5th '' 107-150 Each division closed with the Doxology.

WRITES A BOOK FOR
GANGER PATIENTS
A book which should be read by every person suffering from cancer has been published by Dr. O. A. Johnson, eminent cancer specialist. This remarkable book tells the truth about cancer and its treatment without cutting. Dr. Johnson is today one of the foremost in the study of cancer. He conducts in Kansas City, Mo, a large fully equipped Research Laboratory, and has treated many sufferers in the past twenty years. This treatment is entirely non-surgical, as the knife is not used at any stage. Purely medicinal measures only are employed; that is, external applications to destroy the cancer and internal medication to purify the blood. Hundreds of patients testify to the success of the Johnson Laboratory.
"Oancer Truths," Dr. Johnson's book will be sent free to any sufferer or friend. Delay should be avoided. Address Dr. O. A. Johnson, Suite 561, 1234 Main St., Kansas City, Mo.
