HARRISBURG Allow space in your paper for our report. Sunday was a high day with the Macedonia Baptist church, Order of service. 10 o'clock S. S. at 11 o'clock Rev. H. Green preached a strong sermon from the subject, "God's love for his church" Luke 12:30, all present enjoyed the sermon At 2 o'clock a council was formed of three Elders for the ordination of deacons, composed of Rev. H. Green, Mod Rev Norton of Carrier Mills and Pastor C. W. Scates. At 3 o'clock Rev. Norton, preached the ordination sermon from Heb. 6:1-2 and for 45 minutes he held the congregation spell bound, afterwhich the council laid hands on the following brethren:—Bros. John L. Thomas, Mack Maze, Randle Magill, Prayer was offered by the pastor. The newly ordained officers were presented to the church and they were gladly received. Rev. T. A. Edwards, pastor of the C. M. E. church and Dr. Churchstone Loyd, pastor of the A. M. E Zion church were present and both made some very encouraging remarks. Contribution and benediction by Rev. Norton. At 8:30 the pastor took for his text the 23rd Psalms, subject, "God's care for h's people," for WIDOW OF NEGRO KILLED IN RIOTS AWARDED $2,300 Promise of Protection by Mayor Cited. A verdict awarding Ada Dozier, 3514 Federal street, a colored woman, damages of $2,300 against the city of Chicago, was returned by a jury of white men in Superior court before Judge Samuel Stough yesterday. This was the first of thirty-eight damage cases against the city originating in the race riots of July, 1919, to be tried. Of the von'remen selected all were white except Ellis Thompson of 6220 South Morgan street who was rejected by the assistant state's attorney representing the city. It was brought out at the trial that during the rioting a committee had waited on Mayor Thomson and been assured of ample police protection. The following day thousands of hand bills were circulated on the south side by Ald. R. R. Jackson of the Second ward. They told the colored people who had been staying in their homes fearing to go to work that the Mayor guaranteed ample police protection. William Henry Dozier, husband of Mrs. Ada Dozier, was killed by a mob at the entrance of the stock yards the following day. Claims Promise. Caused Death Attorney A. L. Williams, represent ing Mrs. Dozier, read the hand bills into the record, alleging they had been the direct cause of Dozier's death. One of them read: All stockyard workers may return to their work without fear of molestation or bodily harm. Mayor Thompson guarantees that all races will receive a square deal. He has made safe by ample police protection, 35th and 47th streets to Halsted street and Halsted street to the stockyards James C. Adams, Dead James C. Adams, Grand Secretary of Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodge, of Illinois died at his home in Springfield, last Thursday night after a brief illness. He was employed as messenger in Attorney General Brundage's office. His funeral was held in Springfield, at his residence last Sunday by Central Lodge no. 3, of Springfield, also the Elk's Lodge the Court of which he was a member. His remains were taken to Chicago, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock where they will be entered under the direction of the grand lodge. His remains were accompanied to his home city by his wife and children and a masonic escort. The Gazette joins his many friends and the fraternity in extending sympathy to his family. Misfit Name. Little Florence climbed upon her father's lap on her birthday and put her arms around his neck. Father always called her "Toodies," and until now she had answered to the name. But now she looked at him in surprise. "Why, I'm three now! I should think you'd call me "Threedies." she said. "I have to face the fact," mused the fashionable photographer, as he looked over some recent pictures, "that there are some very ugly features in this business." An Elegant Reception. On Thursday evening, Mrs. Princess Bell gave a reception on the lawn of her brother Rev J. B. McCrary, in honor of Mrs Louise Mitchell, one of our former citizens, but who after the death of her husband went to Cairo, where she is at present residing. The Order of the Eastern Star was invited, together with a few others who were intimate friends of Mrs. Bell. An elaborate three course lunch- ceon was served to the delight of all present. The first course was: Grape Juice. 2nd course. Clubhouse Sanwich. Olives. Water 3rd course. Strawberry Ice Cream. Maroons Mrs Bell was assisted in serving by Mendames Minnie Newell and Lottie Halleck, while Messrs Geo. McCrary, Fred Porter Geo. albaun served as water. At the conclusion of the repast Mrs Adelaide McCrary, Sec. of O E S. in a very pleasing manner presented Mrs Mitchell $10 given her as a token of respect from Jeptha Chapter no. 14. O. E. S. GOOD-NATURED AND PATIENT English Visitor Pays Tribute to Virtues He Noted as Distinguishing American People. A while ago I published a little book on a tour I made in America during war time. I dedicated it "To the kindest people in the world," and I put the dedication in Latin to spare their blushes. Should I write another work of the same kind, I think I should dedicate it "To the most good-natured, tolerant and patient people in the world," writes Sir Arthur E. Shipley in the Outlook. Although as the election grew imminent interest in it became keen and discussion eager, still I only once beard an acute disagreement between the supporters of the rival candidates, and this was between a husband and wife. It seemed based upon a fundamental difference of opinion on that most innocuous and unexciting fluid, milk. As a rule the discussions were most amicable, and usually finished up, after the method of Lincoln, in a joke or a story. Their toleration equals their good humor. They bear patiently every variety of religious dogma; these are almost as numerous in the United States as are patent medicines. They quietly endure and ignore the most infernal noises. Owing to the enormous distances one has to traverse in the states, one spends a considerable part of one's time on the train and it is this reason which possibly accounts for the fact that Americans persist in talking on the cars. Mr. Lucas has recently reminded us that Cartley bequeathed certain books to Harvard university because of his esteem and regard for the American people—"particularly the more silent part of them." The latter exist not only in the imagination of the Chelsea philosopher. They are perhaps not very numerous, still they exist. MEAT UNDER PERPETUAL BAN Residents and Visitors on Island of Valamo, Finland, Must Obey Law Centuries Old. Every day is fish day on the little Island of Valamo, Finland, 12 squares miles in area. Almost ten centuries ago monks of the Greek Catholic church embarked on Lake Ladoga to find a new home and landed on Valamo. A fine old monastery they built and framed a law that from that day no meat should ever be eaten on the island. Recently several members of the American Red Cross stationed at the Russian refugee camp at Viborg, made a journey to the island and were entertained at lunch in the monastery built to replace the one destroyed in 1754. The old law is still obeyed by the 450 monks now living there. ```markdown ``` From the day they arrive on the island to the day they leave or die no meat is eaten by them. Husky, strong and living to a good old age, this lack of meat as food is not apparent in their build. For lunch the Americans had fish in several forms, fried, baked and in soup, but always fish. Hunting is barred, trapping is taboo, so that temptation in the shape of meat may never come. Smoking also is banned. Possibility That World-Famous Gambling Establishment May Be Located on the Island. "The greatest gambling center in the world will be located in the western hemisphere if plans for 'palaces' in Cuba develop as given out," said Walter P. Harris of Havanna. "Cuba is already beset with the gambling fever, and fortunes change hands there almost every day. "Since the announcement of the prince of Monaco that he is preparing to close Monte Carlo, there have been extensive preparations for the establishment of great gambling palaces designed to attract the sporting element that now visits Monte Carlo to the 'Pearl of the Antilles.' Several villages have been surveyed with the view of locating this gambling center, but so far no definite decision has been reached. "Gambling is already flourishing in Havana. The Casino de la Playa is a great garish temple of roulette, where wonderful dinners are served at less than cost. The profit to the house comes from the wheel. The men who take women to the Casino for dinner invariably back them at the wheel. "The moratorium now in effect on the island has not affected the crowds at the Casino, because they are mostly composed of tourists, and the visitor is treated to the sight of a country, apparently bankrupt but gambling madly, where fortunes change hands overnight and the beggar of today may be the rich man of tomorrow."—Washington Post. HUMAN FACE AS A BEACON Radiometer Able to Record the "Shine" Thrown Off, at a Distance of Several Miles. Novelists that speak of a face "lighting up" put down an actual truth that few of them are aware of or intend. One of the most delicate instruments in the world, a radiometer, records the "shine" of a human face, and can do it at a distance of several miles. So delicate is the instrument that it can detect and record the glimmer of a candle half a mile away, and if there were no atmospheric obstruction it could detect the same candle 16 miles away. The instrument consists of two thin glass disks, one polished and one blackened, suspended by a quartz thread in a vacuum. Waves of radiant energy striking this instrument disturb its balance, because the bright disk reflects them, while the black one absorbs them. While the human face to the normal eye gives out no waves of radiant energy, the fact remains that a constant flow of energy is being thrown off, and these waves travel an unknown distance. Although the radiometer is a wonderful and delicate instrument, there is a thermal couple ten times as sensitive as the radiometer and it can detect the heat of a candle 60 miles distant. tickets will be on June 1st, final re- rest; diverse route power privileges. an investment-the folks make-not a out," indoor folks cation-where they go mountains, ride, real folks need the times from a visit to us; both come back new strength, new oons.ington--in our glori- g West, there are ar excellence-Colo- g, the great Nati- c Northwest, Cali- e you'll go--come in plan your trip. Where Small Savings Count. Small savings are like stones in a bridge; they form a firm support to carry one over the flood of an emergency. EQUALIZE BURDEN OF TAXES IS SMALL'S PLEA Republican Candidate for Governor Insists That Big Corporations Should Pay Their Share. To return the government to the people is one of the promises which has been made by Len. Smail, candidate for the Republican nomination for governor of Illinois. During his campaign he and his adherents have exposed the practice of tax dodging by large corporations. Formerly the assessments of these corporations were fixed by the state board of equalization, which board was elected directly by and represented the people. During the last administration, however, this board was abolished and in its place the state tax commission, not elected by the people, but appointed by the governor, was substituted. One of the first acts of this tax commission was to reduce the assessment of the Pulman Palace Car Company from thirty-three million dollars to sixteen million dollars. Next this same commission reduced the assessment of the People's Gas, Light and Coke Company from over fourteen million dollars to an even two million dollars. The Rockford Electric Company's assessment was reduced from eight hundred fifty-five thousand dollars to one hundred fifty thousand dollars. The Chicago railways received a neat concession when their assessment was reduced from six million dollars to one million eight hundred thousand dollars. For the purpose of remedying these evils, Len. Small stands for legislation which will compel the millionaire tax-dodgers to accurately and truthfully list their property. He says: "Such a law would reduce the local rate of taxation, would equalize the present unequal distribution of taxes, would raise abundant funds for city, county and state purposes, and would shift the unjust burden of taxation from our people of moderate means to the rich tax-dodgers who now conceal hundreds of millions of dollars of taxable property and thereby escape their just share of the cost of our city, county and state governments."
