Polecat Bill stole a march on his Democratic friends and got the nomination for state senator. Of course there will be some sore spots on the fellows that also ran. The Republican party is in better shape today than ever before in the history of the party in the new state. DeGraffenreid and Jackson are two Democrats who have been nominated and who will make very strong races. Both of them are good men and good lawyers. The republican party will have to put out splendid men to beat them. And Lew Betts who offered himself as a sacrifice by making the Negro the chief issue in his platform did not get a single vote. It is to the everlasting credit of the democracy that they ignored this panderer to strife. The Democrats here held their primary election and up to this good no one really knows who was nominated. Nearly all of the statesmen claim that they have been selected. There will be a 'ell of a time when these warring factions meet in convention? The Summer Normal(Colored) is now being held at Dunbar school. There about one hundred teachers in attendance and they all praise greater Muskogee. The town of Rentiesville will soon be incorporated and promises to be one of the best trading points on the M. K. & T. Ry. In the event of an election, we may not be able to elect all the county officers but we have a lead pipe cinch on a majority of them. If the constitution should be adopted no poor man or man of moderate means need ever as pire to position and office in the new state. Democrats are now accusing Democrats of stuffing the ballot box and of fraud. This is just what we have been charging them with for many years and so at last they enter with their tardy plea of guilty. All the Republican papers are now a unit against the constitution but if Polecat Bill and his fellows can see the error of their ways, go back to Guthrie and eliminate the objectionable features of the constitution we yet may have an election and statehood. The Henry Asp constitution would fill the bill. But oh well then, you can never get a Democrat to do the right thing for the moment he begins to do right he ceases to be a Democrat. If the Democratic testimony regarding Democartic candidates is true, the affairs of the state should not be intrusted to them under any consideration. A primary election seems to mean the election of the worst men while a convention always selects the best men. The eyes of the whole nation are upon Oklahoma and Indian Territory. Particularly are investors and home seekers watching us. Let us then see to it that we gain their confidence by right under a new enabling act and a new constitution that will be fair aud just to all. Never should there be such an apportionment that 400 voters should have a representation in the legislature or courts equal to 4000 elsewhere. Why should Oklahoma not have as good schools as any other state? It would be impossible, however, under the Murray onstition. The constitution not only would keep ont prospective investors and home seekers but would drive away many now here. No 37 The Murray constitution is doomed. The membership of the Non- Partisan Anti-Constitution League is growing daily. The political features of the constitution are bad enough, but there are other features still worse and the provisions of that document as a whole are simply intolerable. The defeat of the constitution should not a be partisan matter. Every loyal citizen should unite in the rejection of such outrageous provisions. The young men of the new state should see to it that statehood comes under conditions fair and just to all. THE PRIMARY FIASCO. Two things have been most emphatically demonstrated by the Democratic primary. First, that it is a failure in bringing out the best men. As conducted here the people had nothing to say about candidates. The poor man or the man with moderate means had no show whatever. The office could not seek the man—the man (who had the price) sought the office—and the result of such a campaign must be that the man with the most money or the least scruples will win. Another result of the primary just closed, and a result full of chagrin for the Democrats, was the small vote cast. Decent Democrats are simply disgusted with the whole business. They are becoming convinced that the constitution is a most vicious document and while as a party they are not all ready to vote against it, yet it was apparent by the light vote of last Saturday that nearly half of the party will not vote for it. A pleasant feature of the congressional parties that make journeys abroad is the fact that Dan Cupid seems always to be a passenger. He went to the Philippines, and three matches resulted. Mr. Longworth, of Ohio; Mr. Cockran, of New York, and Mr. Sherley, of Kentucky, all surrendered to influences insuring their happiness for life. And now the steamer Bluecher is no sooner docked on her return with the Cannon party from the West Indies than the engagement of two of the company is announced. What is it that makes love the prevailing and compelling topic at such times? asks the Washington Star. Does a discussion of Uncle Sam's new responsibilities lead to it? Or does the delightful imprisonment on shipboard explain it? Whatever the explanation, the fact exists, and it may result in making such trips exceedingly popular. The curiosity of congress as to our outlying possessions may come to overshadow everything else. Most of those who believe that the United States should have an overwhelming navy will indorse the theory of Admiral "Bob" Evans, that we should have battleships and fleet tactics in the Pacific, as well as in the Atlantic. "When the navy is built up to its proper proportions I believe we should have 16 battleships on the Atlantic and 16 on the Pacific," says the admiral. Then we could defy the world! Sir Robere Ball, who has arrived in New York, is professor of astronomy at Cambridge university. "America has done much in advancing the study of astronomy," he says. The Klondike proper—that is, that portion of the Yukon territory in the vicinity of Dawson—as far as the individual miner is concerned, is on a rapid decline owing to the immense area of ground being acquired by dredging companies. One company alone has purchased nearly all the placer ground on the three principal creeks, namely: Bonanza, Eldorado and Hunker, and has bonded considerably more on Dominion and other creeks for various reasons. Where formerly hundreds of miners were working for wages or working their own ground, thus creating a demand for provisions, clothing, machinery, hardware, etc., and the transportation from Dawson to the different mining operations, now dredges are either operating or in course of construction. Mr, Holden is a good Republican and deserves whatever he may ask at the hands of his party. His repub- licanism dates back to the days of slavery and we believe that every Negro in Fort Gibson will do all in his power to see the‘Old Sage of the Barracks”’ the next | postinaster, The cost of the campaign for one democeatic governor was $75,000 and a democratic sen- ator $100,000. ' Many sewing or small rocking chairs are so comfortable that one feels a pang at parting with them when the cane seats are broken through, and there is no place where they can con- vertently be sent for repair. When the reseating is attempted at home, the result is often a failure, for the newly constructed seat is too apt to sag or hump. ‘This can be easily pre- vented by cutting strips of burlap about two inches wide and tacking them firmly in place. The strips should be interwoven so as to resemble a checker board. Over such a founda- tion and upholstering can be neatly fastened. Kitchen aprons wear out a few inches below the belt, especially if one works much about a sink which has ‘a sharp edge, as soapstone and iron sinks too often do. It is an excellent plan to make the apron long and with & deep hem, then when it becomes worn it can be quickly ripped out of the belt, the hem let down and the bottom of it gathered and sewn into the belt and then after the worn part has been cut off what is now the bot- tom of the apron can be hemmed. This does not take aslong as to make a new apron, and it does make one piece of goods do the work of two. A woman noted for her labor saving inventions says that she never winds bobbins for her sewing machine. She simply places the bobbin in the shut- tle after putting the end of the thread through the eye, puts the shuttle in the machine and the spool in one of the drawers of ‘the machine, and thus winds her bobbin as she stitches. Many lace waists which have been made up over a thin china silk often become too small for wear after they have been cleansed or washed several times. It is not quite practical to cut the front open and insert a fancy vest in a blousing waist, although it can be done with excellent results in a tight fitting corsage. Usually the net or lace can be pulled back to nearly its original proportions and the trouble is with the silk alone. This may be remedied by inserting a piece of silk each side of the front in the Mining. This is covered by making a deep collar of batiste, which is one of the fashionable accessories of the mo- ment, and covering the inserted pieces by the adjustment of the collar, The deep collar should be removable, and can be worn with other waists. It may be embroidered or simply edged with lace. There are many households where fresh fish is not available more than once or twice a week, where the fam- ily are fond of chowder, Salt fish can be freshened so as to be usable for this purpose, but canned salmon is much more to be desiréd, and once the cook has used it she will wonder why she never thought of it before, Make the chowder in the usual way. An oiled floor is much harder to care for than a polished floor from the fact that a drop of grease from the frying pan makes an ugly looking spot which seems very hard to get out. On such a spot just put a little baking soda, let it remain a short time to ab- sorb the grease, then wash in hot water. He says: “T am one of the heaviest taxpayers on farm lands in Mason and Tazewell Counties, Ilinois, and I have been ta- miliar with the conditions around San Antonio for 12 years.
