"The Home Town" Thrown Down Guestlist to Four Richmond Pupus and Only Two Pisk It Up—"The Residence" Furrow the Scheme but "The St. Luke Herold" Doubts to Be An Exhibition—High Reputation of Company's Transempor, R. T. Hill—Conference in Sankton. Regular Correspondence of The Am. Bucromus, Va., April 22.—The Home News, published in a marctic and seaching editorial, demanded of four of the five Afro-American weathles published in Richmond a definition of their position' relative to the proposed Negro Exhibit at the Jamestown Tercentenary. The four journals placed upon the rack were The Press, The Journal of the American Society of Sunday School Rev. Fortunately for the Baptist Record, that paper did not come in for The Home News' writtens and accorptions. Good that it did not, for Brother Z. D. Lawin, the editor of the Baptist Record, is somewhat of a muddinging D. D., and our good Brother Murray of Methodik' perquisitions would certainly be written up, yet he front spooled. If he did indeed, recipe immerse in a mud puddle. True, the Alexander paper, after putting several questions to the Richmond papers, proceeded to answer them to its way of thinking, without awaiting a reply from them. The new paper placed itself squarely on record as being opposed to the plans of the Negro Development and Exposition company. It did say that the failure of the law legislature to give encouragement to the company showed that the white people do not wish Afro-Americans to take any part in the view. It said it would not be an exhibitor at the Jamestown Exposition. Reading between opposition is not to the men-who are in the opposition to the prosecution, but to Jim Robinson in the courtroom. The Reformer cause out boldly for the prosecution of the men who are pushing forward the work of the Development company. Afro-Americans are the most active of the other, and the probability that the management of the Nero Development company is the most successful through a congressional appropriation, has caused the Nero Development company to kill the treasurer of the company. I doubt anybody who has handled more of the savings of his fellow members of the race. As cashier of the United Order of True Reformers, he has handled several millions of other people's savings, and the treasurer of the First Baptist church, the largest Afro-American church in this country; church president of the State Baptist Sunday School convention, president of the Richmond University and Hartshorn Memorial College, and a church president of the University. The fact that he is treasurer of the Development company is a guarantee that the development will be strictly guarded. The Brownday School Era and the Planet have been the focus of the editors. But Editors Mitchell and Williams are equal The five papers published by Afro-Americans in Richmond have a large circulation; they are often published in the New York Times, then represent a large religious or fraternal organization. The United Order of True Reformers: The St. Luke Heveld, the Indiepe lent Order of the Cross, the African American Corn, the State Grand Lodge of Python and the Courts of Calanthe; and The Baptist Recorder, the Sunday school organizations of the State. The power of the Richmond press is great, and any movement of a genuine nature with tremendous effect. All Americans the country must endorse. The nation must judge of their Richmond children concerning the proposed Negro exhibition; for here are the published its origin. The Negro Critic; here is the place where there should be the greatest interest shown, the greatest activity manl If the enterprise is a worthy one, personal dislikes of the officers should cause no one to grow, legislation, the disfranchisement of Afro Americans and the signal failure of the single ply company to aid the Sigma Development company in its work are sufficient reasons to say so. If Afro Americans are to have an anvil when it then it should be one of which all the whole people will mute to make it grand. CHAETAMOONA, Tenn., April 19.—After having completed their work in this city and having forwarded their report to Washington, two secret service men in the employ of the National Government leave to-day for their regular posts of duty. These men, who give their services to Dr. Diane and Mr. Johnson, been in this city since shortly after the lynching of Ed. Johnson, and they have been diligently investigating the matter ever since. There have been many rumors that secret service men were in the city. Often these statements have come from reliable authority, but it has always been impossible to positively confirm the report, so well have the government concealed their identities. It has been very likely known yesterday that the two men were here and had been making investigations. The report of this inquiry, for only such it has been, has been forwarded to Chief Wilkley of the secret service bureau at Washington. It is by no means certain that any action will be taken in the premises, the secret service chief will not see here by their chief-to-make a thorough inquiry into whole matter and to-forward the results of their investigation to the authorities at Washington. No arrests have been undertaken by the officials who are leaving the city today, and none will be made by them. It is supposed that the report of the agents will be formed over to the department desiring the information they will take into account in question. No arrests are expected to follow immediately, and it is supposed that if criminal proceedings are begun, they will be started before a grand jury of the United States court when it next meets in this city. It is also stated that the man who have been informed of the inquiry have secured every item of information in question, including the name of every person appearing in the lynching, every spectator and every person who was about the county fall or bridge on the night Ed. Johnson was hanged. It is further said that they have every detail, no matter how alight, and that they have been able to trace the movements of every man conjoined to the night in question, even to the point of telling them that he reached the bridge, the exact part, if any, they took in the affair, at what time they left the bridge, the route they pursued and the time they returned to their homes. No one is able to explain how the secret service men were able to secure such detailed information, and if the fact that it can only be explained by the secret service department sent its crack men to undertake the inquiry in this city.
