NUMBER A Prejudice the Salvation the N2zgro Race? — ahs SOE" av Gas pregeuree ms Pprevetse SEY BP Vesees VrweeleRm St the Negro. Prejudice per ee may be a mean thing, bat ic is making the black man. ** EF compare it to popping corn. When I wasa boy 1 used to got my corn and shell itintoa skillet. A kernel would get hot and burst opea, white and beantiful, and hop into the fire and be lost. When ] pute cover on the ekillet it kept that kernel in, to help otheze get hot. Wher I took the cover off the ekillet was tilled with beautiful white corn, all bursteng forth at once in a mats of glory. “Lift: the top—prejadice—off the Negro, and when ore beoame educated or acquired property, he would hup away trum the Ne;roe, even if he fell among the moat degraded whitea Keep the lid on and be has to etay with his own people and help to eduvate and bring them up to his own tevel ” PRESS AGENT FOR A RACE. This is the philosophy of Charles Stewart, who enjoya the unique distinction of being official prees agent for his race. In that oapaoity he knows intimately practically every Negro leader and has his biogra- phy at hie finger tips. Stewart makes a living, aud a good one, attendisg Negro religioue and educational gatherings. ‘Papers don't pay spy attention to this side of the Negro,” he sad, indicating the big Negro Baptist conven. tion, ‘If there isa Negro brawl they play it up, but left alone, they would say nothieg of the good things the rava is doing. I Jon’t blame the papers, They know what the public want and are giving it to them, Thejpublio need to be educated.” As presse sgent Ste sart koepa track of everything thatgoes on in the couvention and seea that it gets to the papora. Hie: work here has been easy, for it is the first time in ten yeare that local papers have sent seportern to cover the convention, but -tewait and what he caw, gotsa hearivg in al) newsptper offices, even tn the South. Lis work, from the Nepro etandpoint, is of vital importance to the race. Tos race press agent 1a deceptive. Look at him: of medium-height with rolls of fat from hie chin to bie hips, black as a full blooded Af- rican, with the typical features. and there ie nothing impressive. Let him talk, in bis deferent a', retiring way acd the bryz, well-shaped head is realized. He listens 3 minute and from hie plave bebind the plat. from he hag graaped from the babel of sound all of the convention's proceedings. He knows the procedure, the participante aud their voices with uncanny accuracy. IIE 18 HIS OWN PROOF The man ie hit own proof that hardship will be the Negro’s salva. tion. “Born in Franktort, Kentucky, he wae eo smart that bis father decreed he needed to more achooling but abould go to work, Stewart ran away to get aneducation, For 40 centy he borght an excursion ticket to Louisville and landed with 10 cente, “Ever work in a hotel?” asked a man who accosted him on the atreet, © Yeu, sir,” he answered promptly, slthough he had never seen the inside of one. When asked where, he named the Li vington hotels. He was taken to an Ohio Kiver boat, rigged out in white coat and apron pnd turned loove in the Cining room, where he stood in awe of the iuxury, : “Why don't you wait on thuse people?” demanded an oflicer, Without heer itivn he tried to. He vot an oder and returned with a tray toaded wan dishes, but he was awkward and ignorantand hie course war followed by & string of dyopped dishee, When he tried to set the tray on tepot a chair back the ruin war complete, They! bore with him until the boat reterned to Lourmville, thon paid him off ees2.c3. With (at monsy he matriculvted inthe estate university, bougtt a cl ar aslirtand ho ‘fe v cents left. FIRED Ol sf NING KNOWLEDGE Ho got a julia town, bit wis tired because he was trying to get aneducitiion, a thing the employer never gountcnanced when be wasal| slave master and he refuted ochinge his waya. He found a night's shetter in a gambling room, stud yong hie lessons and snatching atew hours of sleep, He went to echool withcut food. Then, Willism bl. | Steward, editor of the Amerivsn Daptiet, Negro, gave him a job, vol. levcting accounts With that le worked his way through sonool. 2 For 25 oenta a week he furniehed oolered notes to the Loueveile Courier Jonrnal, Stewsrd doing the work One week Steward waa} teo busy, Stewart wotehia own stuff, It paseed without a word and he never again bothered Stewird to do the writing. He landed a} plave on the staff of the Courter Journal, In 180 he went to the Chi.}) oago Inter-Ocean, he has aince worked fur the New Orleans Pickyune, | 8t. Luaia Globe Democrat, Memphie Commercial-Appeal, Atlanta) Constitution, Nashville Banner, New York Sun and practically all of the big Southern papers. | In Chivagohe studied stenography and court reporting. Becaure : of his color he was refused admissiun to the county Stenographers’ || Ausociation, one of his few proscevionsl set backe. He got plenty of | work by cutting the assootation's prices in two, and wse taken into], Sn ee and covered for newapaycra 17 Iynchings, “1s getting pretty bad,” he eaid, referring to mob violence. ‘In Miseiveippi the other day, 3 white man killed a culorcd man’s cow. When the colored man com. plained to the magietrate he was tynched, They are getting indiecrim- inate.” “What is the reasun?” he was asked, AMEKICAN BLOODTHIKSTY: “The American people are bloodthirety. Any man down there van kill a Negro on any pretext whatever and you never oan get a jury to convict him. Whena fellow wants to bave alittle fun, ho just gets a nigger and kills hj.” “What ie the end?” “The outcome isin sight. The Negroes are now turning on the white mon, There will bo norace war. We are not prepared to fight, 1 caa’t afford to fight you, Youhaveeverything. You are not golag to sell me & gan to be used against you. The leaders arc advocating prayer and patien-e and belicve that everything will be worked out. “Iu Springfield, Ils., I fourd every Negro house fortified, That is the oundition in any town north of Mason and Dixon's ilne where there has been atrouble, In the Worth when a mob starts it goose after every maa with s black face They don’t do that in the South, REFUGE IN THE LAW. “Thinga wild go on getting worse nntil the law will have to tarn in and protect life, and the best of both races will be behind 1t. «When the opposition is strongest the Negro 1e doing the most work and .nakiug the greatest progress," he eaid, sfter declaring that the South fe the place for the Negro. ‘No man has been more bitter againet tho Negro than Governor Vardaman of Mississippi, He re- fuaed to appoint any Negro notary, yet wo governor ever signed more Negro charters. The Mississippi Negroes have 11 banks, and their fraternal orders pay out annually $500,000 in benefite.” Inatead of decrying the conditions, Stewart adjusts himself to them. He carriea a good grip anda big typewriter in a leather case. ‘Pretty fine bags you've got there, George; who do they belong to?” asked a man recently, who accosted him ona Southern ratlroad platform, “Yes, sir, bore, dey belongs to Mister Stewart; I works for him;” anawered the owner, dropping from the perfect grammar he uses in the North to the Southern Negro dialect. Although he has never beon asked to show his credentials when Gling telegraph stories to the big papera he representa as 3 eide line, Stewart takes no chances. When ia the South and the news ta urgent, this is his formula as he leaves the copy in the telegraph offiee: “Mister Stewart sent this in, boss, an’ eaid he’d appreciate it to get it off right away.” '*T was ahot in Grenada, Mies., in 1890, but it ran’t fair to blame il white men fur that; neither fe it fair to blame all Negroes for what ome may do,” Stewast estd, when asked about hie only serious rouble, HIS ONLY REAL TROUBLE. He went into the poet office to mail a letter and the clerk grceted 1im with a vile epithet, which he denied without a ehow of resentment After tesving the office he wrote # compiaint to the postmaster pene. | al and mailed itm bor That afternoon the portal e erk f und tewartina barber sh po i Wed him oitady, where he an ounced hat there would be 4 killing as a result uf the report to Wasting on. | Conunued on Page Kight. | COLORED MAN MURDERED | ON A SANTA FE TRAIN! A White Man Whose Record is Unknown Shoots Down a Citizen of Topeka. The killing of Wiliatir Smart ona Santa Fe passeoger train Monday night near Tecumsch by John Babb and William Tanne- hill,an accessozybelore and after the crime, is nothing more than a premediated murder and they should pay the penalty of the law. Babb’s own statement is sufficient tc convict. He stated that he went into the coach where Smart anda crowd was drinking and on being offered the bottle by Smart that he (Bakb) refused. Smart then cursed him aod he knocked the colored man down and left the car, returning with agun aad upon sight began shooting, and to justify his cold blooded act claims that Smart was, after him, Babb ought to have remained in the coach he weat ‘‘into after striking Smart, but the evidence shows that instead, he borrowed the gun from Tannehill and re- turned and fired the shots as above stated, This{shows clealy that he was bent on murder. It istrue that Smart was a man who drank, caroused and oftenin fights, and was not as good us we would like to have a citizen, yet aud ‘i this is no reason why he should be shot down like acur. He was bon near Topeka and had spent all his life around here. He wasa a a working man—one of those un- fortunate men who could not control hinaself, and all will have to admit that this does not justify his being murdered by a man who may be worse than Smart. Who ia Topeka knows what kind or manner ef life this man Babb hasled or what crimes he has committed? Yet five men on the jury was willing that he go {ree. Smart leaves three little chil- dren without a mother to care forthem. He was the only one to whom they had to look for ia bread and he worked and supported them. After all, this sbows that Smart was not such a bad tellow. There is no excuse fora man like Babb carrying a guo,and his excuse to the county attorney for so doing proves that he is of the tramp type, for he said that he had it for the purpose of pawn- mg it to purchase food. We are surprised at the five white jurors who tricd to make the killing justifiable when they knew they were wrong. The daily papers were very unfair as was also the police force. They could only see the sins of poor, unfortunate Smart while Babb, whom we believe to be a ruffian and a tramp, was held up aS a <aint, and no at- fempt was made to find out otherwise. Had Smart killed Babb all white men of the class who served cn the jury would V.ve wanled him lynched. We selieve in fuir play, not senti- n nt—too much c{that now topeka people are too prone o tahe sides with outsiders wainst their own citizens with- ut first getting at the facts. Clarence Jackson, the young ‘clored man on the jury deserves nuch credit for standing up for ight. The murder of Smart will edound on those who try to hield Babb, NOTICE Literary Pocictios of Kanaas and the Wuot, take notice; The Luter-Stute Literary a socia- tion of Kansas and the West will hotd its 19th annual session in Kan- sas City, Kans., in December, all societies are asked to begin active work at once so as to bein readiness tur this moeting, which premises to he the best in the bistory of the organization. JACK JOHNSON’'S VICTORY. aver Stanley Ketchel is not : “color victory’’ but simply th superiority of one man over an. other. It shows that a man’: aapablities cannot be measurec by the texture of the skin, but by the opportunities he has tc demonstrate his skill, and i! given a chance, the blacks will prove themselves in all walks of life as they have in the prize ring. A Negro would have been heavy-weight champion years ago, but was never given an opportunity to contest for the title in this division, When old Peter Jackson declared him- self king and stood ready to make good his claim by meeting all comers and goers, the crafty white boxer saw the hand writ- ing on the wall, and received the plaudits of a prejudiced public by drawing the ‘‘color line.’' Thus the conqueror of the ‘Old World’ was foroed into setire- ment until it was discovered that he was old, decrepit and broken down; then challenges from an army of vigrous young white boxers were hurled at him from all sections. Peter Jackson pa;- sed out of the world with- out realizing his fondest hope— a chance to battle for the world's, greatest pugulistic honor. However, the colored fighter never grew discouraged and cared for himse!f{ so admirably during the passing years that the sport loving public decided that fighters claiming the werld’s championship must first settle with the blacks or such claims would not be accepted. Joha- son appeared on the scene and after a chase around the world and sacrificing the lion's share of the purse, the black gladiator cornered Tommy Burns io Aus- ralit and) brought back tof America what had been taken rom her by a foreigner. He has}, yon the crown on merit and], should be permitted to wear it], ind receive as high honors as], thers who have ruled from this], aine throne, We admire Johnson, not on]. ccount of his being black, bu | recauae he is the best man in the |< vhole world, Tle obtained his] osition (ity and honorable, and | sa fighter, the white people ft ave agmucrh claimon him asi he black, and fo a whire mandy ethranes hie the black racels land hinges hihly ws thes fe Oo Jannsor ind accent hum a ts heir champ on Ite nt ap uestion af color, The best man|y fon, and now thet a black man|s s the pugulstic ruler, creed, aor nor previous condition wAl|n ¢ no bar for any one wholtl jay have asperations to contest {1 the place. Johnson is a real} h I ete fcc a refuses to meet men on account of color has no sight to lay claim on any auch title. They are simply sailing uader falsc colors. Commenting editorially on the battle, the Kansas City Journal says: “The defeat of Stanley Ketebell by the black champion, Jack Joho- aon, seeme to leave the palm of pugilistio honors, the heavy weigat championship of the world, safely in the keeping of the African race. The exeggerated idea which the retired white champion, James Jef. fries, has expressed of his drawing power asa pugilistio attraction in s demand for a $150,000 purse wild in all probability dehar bim from another contest, even if his long absenoe from the ring has not un. fitted him for euch a struggle, an it hia done all former aepiranta who have retired for any considerable length of time. Aside from Jef. frien there reema to be no star om the pugilistie horizon who is ad- mitted by the experta to have cven atighting vhance to dethrone tue black champton Thus the prize ring hae demonstrated a fact which wae considered settled long ago, according to the lessons of anato- my—that is, thata black skull is herder, thicker atd vapablo of standing more pounding than bea white one.” "SOME COOL AND TIMELY FATIS. Under the above heading, the Chicago inter-Ocean of a recent date, published the following editorial which was made the principle leader for that issue ot that paper. Wecommend it ir the strongest possible manner especially at this time because it jcomes as a ray of sunshine on the darkest day, so lax along this line in recent years have become both the Northern press, pulpit and people: “(The secretary of war for the United States government saw fit on Wednesday to boast be- tore a Southern audience that,in his home, he always kept ‘con- spicuously displayed’ the por- traits of Jefferson Davis, Stone- wall Jackson aad Robert E.
