THE EIGHT GREAT INDICTMENTS. The following was taken from the court-Ax of Chicago, of which we re- fer for benefit of our readers. Booker T Washington has created a national sedition by accepting an invitation to din with the President of the United States. He had an honor accorded him that is not often extended to me with "Prof." But let us remind Prof Washington that there is one place that he cannot enter and be served. When he goes to Indianapolis he might create another stir. There is a barber shop in that city owned and controlled by a Mr Knox, the distinguished editor and platform speaker. Another Booker may be permitted to pu. President Roosevelt's farks a d spoors in his mouth, but unless he turns pure white, he will never the honor of having one of Mr Knox's razors used on his face in that shop. Mr Knox is now out lecturing Gregoes and riding in "James Crow" ears, but he has left orders at the shop not to let Bro Booker come there and get his black face shaved and kinky hair. You have made it professor, from the backwoods of the South to a seat at the dinner table in the White House, and somebody said that you had come a long way. But let us tell you that there is a since longer than that—from the dinner table of the president of this great nation to a seat in the barber shop of George L Knox. Hope you will make it, and if you do, the next place for you heaven—Ec. A. B. W H Carter, editor and publisher of THE TIMES, extends to his friends garments and enemies a happy and successful new year. Also thanks them one and all for all favors shown him during the past year, hoping that all may continue giving us their support, thereby enshaping us to make our paper bigger, better and more prosperous than ever. During the past year we have drown all in our power to aid our people in every respect, politically, socially and in a business way, and have been enabled and even cursed by many. But we realize that success is only btahled by these who hold on. Our paper has not been at all times just what we would like to have it, but from lack of finances due to non's pport, la gely among our own people, we have done our best under the circumstances, and as the new year grows old, we trust that our papaper may grow bigger, larger and stronger by aid of our friends and members of the race. We say again, a successful new year to you dear reader and friends. Mrs Poly Fleming was surprised with a handsome present of a fine pair of $5 shoes, a bead wrap, a bottle of imported wine, a one dozen fine California oranges by her daughter and son-in-law in St Louis. The members of Quinn Chapel presented their pastor, W C Williams, an Xmas offering of $34.23 as a token of their appreciation of his noble work for the church. The concert given at the A M E church last week under the management of Mrs Daily Steele and James Woods was a needed success. The A M E church will organize literary society next friday. All lovrs of literary work are invited to be present. SEDALIA SEDALIA, MISSOURI SATURDAY JANUARY 4th. 1902. Mildred reads the "Marriages"— Her interest in them never fails— Father reads the "Politics," And mother reads the 'Bargain Sales. Arthur reads the "Sporting News"— His special hobby is baseball— Save the man who reads the proofs, No one living reads it all. Bridget reads the "small ad page," Looking for a better place; Agnes reads the murders and the Tales of men in deep disgrace. Ethel reads the list of guests At the big Van Astor ball— Save the man who reads the proofs. No one living reads it all. Forty pages every week, Eight long columns to the page, To read everything would add A full twelve month to your age. So each reads his special part, Then lets his paper fall. Pity for the man who reads the proof For he has to read it all. 33 Mrs W H Carter, ditress, extends to her many friends a happy and prog essive new year. Also thanks them for their patronage to this paper during the past year. Old Kentucky Negro Woman Thought She Was Still A Slave. Mary Stewart, colored, aged 74, who says she had been a slave all her life up to five weeks ago, arrived in Lincoln, Nebraska, in search of her son, who was sold out of her arms, a pickaninny, in Kentucky, forty-four years ago. The old woman says she was bought when a girl of 10, and has belonged ever since to a family living in the mountains of Carroll county, Kentucky, and that she never heard until recently that all the slaves had been made free by Pres'dent Lincoln. CONSIDER THIS. The New Year brings new duties and new hopes. To the Negro it brings a new purpose: Not to get out of politics, but to get into business; not to aandon our citizenship, but to develop our resources, so that we can fortify ourselves in the defense and maintenance of citizenship. A Negro well established in business is more credit to the race than an apointment of a black minister to Liberia. We need turn our eyes from the delusion of politics to the realities of mec- canism and business from the "glory" of being a leader to the actualities and possessions of a doer and producer; from making big speeches to building big houses; from running ward meetings to running business firms; from getting votes to getting dollars; from mul- tiping one vote to ten votes to rurning one dollar over to make it count ten. Mrs P T Moffit served an excellent collation last week o Mr and Mrs Charles Lowls, Mr and Mrs R H Sims, Mr and Mrs W H Carter, Mrs Querrels and Mrs Rev Dersmore. Ex-United States senator Arthur Pue Gorman, the Negro hater of May and, is being slightly mentioned in several parts of the country as the standard bearer for president in 1904. Ex-Senator Gorman has never in all his political life drawn an honest breath, he is always like the Irishman's flea, when any one attempts to put their hands on Gorman he isn't there, and no one can tell where he is at on any political issue or question, he is an old political hack and fraud and if the leaders of the democratic party are unable to find any better timber for president in 1904 than A Pue Gorman, then they had better not go to the expense of holding a national convention. CHILDREN'S PARTY. Mr apd Mrs J W Williams entertained a number of youngsters Wednesday evening in honor of the birthday of their little son. Quite a number were present. BAND BENEFI The ladies and members of the Morgan Street Baptist church, under the management of Mesdames Newbill and Saunders, gave a successful entertainment at their church, Wednesday, for the benefit of the Queen City Concert Band and all enjoyed a two hour and a half programme of choice music from the band. Refreshments were served by the ladies and a nice sum was realizeu for the band for which the boys ideal very thankful to these ladies and the congregation. We do not aim to do great things, But then we'll try to please you. Our object is not to instruct, But only to amuse you. Help us to help each other, Lord, And feel each other's care. So let these words be scattered abroad And each one do their share. We can now say to the old year "Go way back and sit down." The campaign pot has begun to steam and in a few days will be boiling hot. How about that new leaf you turned over Wednesday? Have you turned it back? We are are a little behind time, but nevertheless we wish all our friends and enemies a Happy New Year. As the new year grows old let us grow better. Stronger in Christ, stronger in manhood, stronger in race pride and stronger in womanhood. If the new year brings new ideas, we trust that it will bring with it a new womanhood among our young girls and a new manhood among our young boys. If you owe us anything you can settle now at almost any figure, as we need the money, "deed we do," and we want to get rid of all old accounts of the past year. If a man's record is what places him in the higher offices in the gift of the people, th n T G Brown should be a candidate to mayor. The city authorities have at last begun to put in crossings on Main and Lamine streets. This shows that we have a working council. At a late meeting of the Colored Law and Order League P J Moffitt was elected president and A J Adams first vice president and E L J Simpson secretary. This is the way the editor of the Alton, Kansas, Empire urges his pay-up-on-subscription call: This is no poem. His hard earned 'stnff.' Since Christmas eve we learn that there are a number of gentlemen spoken of fot mayor. Among them we note the names of H W Meuschke, J M Cannon, J W Morris among the republicans. some of Sedalia's foremost business business men. On the other band we learn of Dr Yancey, R Dean and Mr Collins. We are indebted to Prof O W White, Mrs O W White, R H Sims, P T Moffitt and Mr and Mrs Lewis, for the splendid articles they cheerfully contributed to our Christmas number, and only hope that others will take an interest in sending us like articles every week. The programme which was to be rendered at Taylor Chapel on Wednesday, January 1 in honor of emancipation day, under the auspices of the Colored Law and Order League was postponed on account of a number of those on the programme being unable to attend on account of sickness. The League will carry out the programme about February 16. Among the train porters who were in the city during the holidays were Lincoln Hightower, Elias Eletcheer, Charles Brasbear, Peter Abbott, T M Smith, Dan Jones, James Thomas, Henry Jackson and Isaac Reynolds. Each one excepting Hightower reported late. The number of prescriptions written by Dr J M Harris for the year 1900 run over 7,000, and in 1901 it was just above the 6,050 mark. This shows that the doctor has and is yet doing a good business in Sedalia and if he were getting 50 cents in cash for each prescription during 1900 it would have amounted to $3,500, and last year $3,000 to say nothing about visits etc. This goes to prove what a good man can do. H L Dixon made one sensible remark during his lifetime, Tuesday, when he said that we as young men must stop voting for a man for a dollar or one day's pleasure, but vote for the man who will do something for us all during his term as an officer. Well Dixon that's a good thought and we only hope you and all the rest of the young voters will look well at that this spring and fall. H D Dow, one of our young lawyers, and a stunned republican worker, has been spoken of by a number of his friends as an aspirant for the office of c'ty attorney Mr Dow was brought up under such men as Hon Bothwell and Hon Charles E Yeater, which alone should make him an excellent and bright young lawyer. Prosecuting Attorney John Cashman has announced that he will not be a candidate for reelection under any circumstances and it looks as though the people or at least some of them are taking him at his word. Two democrats have already announced as candidates for his office. Mr Cashman can make as much money without this office, anyhow, as a good lawyer is always in demand and a good fee is as a general thing always attached. The money is wasted, not because the space is not good, but because it is not utilized to good advantage. The space is as fertile as the richest bottom land, and it would yield immense crops of busi- ness if it were only cultivated properly. There is no use in expecting the impossible. The age of miracles is past. The age of mystery about advertising is rhpidly passing. The time is coming when all business men will think of their advertising in the same common-sense way that they think of the rest of their business, Advertising is amenable to good business rules. The trouble is that people have gotten into the habit of saying that advertising is uncertain— nything about it, and that it is a very mysterious is sort of talk may be expected from ‘the pub- business transaction. xe Everything in business has to be done right or it will not pay. Buying advertising is as certain as buying carpets, or coffee or coal, You can lose money in doing either. Copyright, Charles Austin Bates, New York, SAEs Gor fee returned if we fail.
