BANQUETED DR J.R.A. CROSS
LAND AT ST JOSEPH
The Banquet and reception that was given last Tuesday night March 11th, in honor of Dr Crossland at the Lyceum Threatre, was largely attended by representative Republicans in and out of the city. The committee had spared no pain to make this eclipse anything of its kind ever given in the city. We shall be sorry to see him leave us, although we are sure his interest is with the people of Missouri and the colored people therein. The recognition given the race in appointing Dostor Crossland to this distinguished post of honor by our grand and noble administration is highly appreciated by the Afro-Americans all over the western country and all are going to join hands to snow our admiration of the man who so nobly fought his way to the top of the tadder.

The Socialist proposes to use the government in behalf of the trades Union. They want the Negroes to help them into power and at the same time invite him to stay out of their Labor organizations. What think ye of this? 'Equality"eh—!
It is being rumered that Miss Myrtie Nelson a very popular teacher of the Lincoln School has sent in her resignation as teacher we trust that the rumor is a false one; as Miss Nelson has always proven herself to be a perfect lady a christain and an excellent teacher.
Dr Mason, secretary of the Freeman Aid Society will give a public lecture in the chapel of the Geo. R Smith College next Tuesday night: The public are invited to attend and here this grand and noble lecturer.
Easter excercises are now up and in full bloom in our city among the colored churches, great arrangements are being made and an elaborate amount of decoration recitations, soloes and music will be rendered at the larger churches in honor of Easter and of the welcome spring."
Stamps accepted.
The question now is, will the citizens movement be more beneficial to the Negroes of our city during the next two years than the party movements has been in tee past four years? Well it wont hurt try them once and see.
El. where in the columns of this paper, will be found the announcement card of Mr Mathew Meyers. who is a republican candidate for the nomination of Constable o Sedalia Township, subject to the republican convention Mr Meyers is well known to the people of our city, but is one who has spent many years among us as a party worker, business man and an honorable citizen. He was a candidate two years ago for city Assessor and was elected by a good majority, but by unfairness he was robbered of the office,
Should he be given this nomination his electron is assure, and the republican banner will continue to wave over the Constable's in Sedalia Township.
During the past few weeks the people have worked up over the citizens ticket many of them opposed, while there were a large who were in favor of it. So the the committees issued the call for the ward caucuses to elect the delagates and the said delagates should meet in convention and there confirm or reject the proper sitlon and nominate a ticket.
But when these caucuses was called to orer by the different ward committeemen, then and there was the time for the opposing factions to fight the movement down, but enstead of them being hand ready to battle they stayed at home to await the results, and citizen's or fusion movement was carried without a rub. But those stayed at home are now making the hollow. We were among the
tighters, but like all other party fighters we are perfectly satisfied when the majority rules as did in this instance. The ticket as has been named is made up with some of our our best citizens and business men, men who have been tried and have given perfect satisfaction in every respect, and good men is what the people wan to run our city, could not have got a better ticket then the present republican-democrat ticket.
We cannot see nor can we understand where and how Negroes of our proud city can benifit themselves by turning down our best citizens and supporting the U S or the J-D-P. We have learnt of Socialistism and what they are doing for and against the Negroes in the industrail world. We have ried Democratic and the republican city administration time and again, and the Negro has never reaped any benifits in the way of improvement side-walks, crossings of streets, as he got was a liberal promise and one policeman and a janitor. But now since the city government has been taken out of politics and put into lands of those who's interest is for the up-building of the city, the Negro chances are more favorable, for persons who will be appointed to the different places will or should appointed on his merits and ability fill such place and on any political or money influence, and we believe to that improvements will be made in all parts of city regard less color, wealth or political influences. And if the citizen ticket will live up to what they say, the political wire-pullers, money inflicment or color will have any bearing in the next city appointment, but only qualified and competent men considered
So we say to the colored voters that you will no mistake in trying the new scheme of citizenism, dont stay at home on election day, for there a duty you must proform if you want your race to be properly cared for in the issuing of the city pie. We cannot get any thing from the Socialist party and the Jeffersonian democrats has nothing for you. Now will you act wisely and stop your groubling and fighting and within yourself or by your actions, if the citizen's ticket will help better our town, financially, bring more business' purify the city, reduced the city debt, reduce the city taxes, make more improvements on all city properity, give more employment to the laboring men of our city, then you can arrive some benifit, And it will you duty help support it at the poils April next.
At last Uncle Sam has made some efforts to investigate the disfranchisement laws in the southern States, a committee has been appointed National authorities to look after this matter and the are that a Negro's face can again be seen in the House of Congress are the ignorant southern white man must suffer the same kind of disfranchisement as the southern Negro

The contract once made, and the space decided interest seems to die. Even a neglected ad in a good paper will do some good, in spite of the advertiser's apathy. A good advertisement will always bring profitable returns, if placed in a paper whose price for space is based on an honest circulation statement.
And if I were an advertiser I would not use a paper that refused to prove its circulation. Circulation is what he is buying and he has the right to know the quantity. And bare assertion isn't proof—not by several thousands, sometimes.

About five years ago my right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this ear entirely
I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a number of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that they could help me, even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the irritation effect continued. I then saw your advertisement accidently in a New York paper, and ordered your treatment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain.

Evans Building,
subscribe to the "Industrial Progress" book and have your picture in it as a prominent business man? Does the "Society" programme catch you? Are you susceptible to the blandishments of the gentleman who puts beautiful charts in all the railway stations?
Do you take "a space—the only one left," in a thousand and one schemes that come around every year? Do you suppose you ever got a cent's worth of benefit out of any $10 you ever spent that way?
If all the dollars that are diverted from the newspapers into these and similar channels were used in buying space in the best paper in town there would be fewer merchants who say that advertising is a doubtful undertaking.
There's nothing doubtful about it. It is as sure as any other business transaction. The funny part of it is that it is generally part of a business.

Chateau de Speer Wines

THE MUSEUM
The Chateau contains a limited supply of Private Stock Port nineteen years old, besides Burgundy and Claret nearly the same age. The Speer Port, however, nine years old, as well as the Burgundy, Claret and Sherry, are high class wines. The ★ ★ Climax Brandy is 18 years old. All are preferred where known by the Medical profession as superior to any that can be bead, for
best excellent effect upon the system when used by invalids, the weakly aged persons and in general family use. Northern New Jersey climate, and soil abounding in iron is just adapted for this grape for Port wine. It is the same kind of soil as in Portugal. Speer's winery and vineyards are the only Port grape vineyards in the United States; only vineyards that cultivate the real Port wine grape of Portugal; while other wines or mixtures called port are made without a single Oporto grape in them. Mr. Speer is the first and only one who imported the vines and acclimated the real Port wine grape vines of Portugal. He spent thousands of dollars as a hobby to see what he could do toward acclimating these Portugal vines here. It took eight years for them to become acclimated before Mr. Speer got a single grape; during these years all died except about eight hundred vines, when those began to grow vigorous and bear fruit; from these, layers were made for new vines. The vineyards now cover fifty six acres. It has proven a success. The grapes are allowed to hang on the vines until they begin to raisin, when they have parted with some of the water and are rich in sugar; and the wine made from. Port wine grapes is the only real genuine Port wine made in America. It is by far THE wine for weakly persons, the aged and for evening entertainments.

From Infancy To Age
MOTHERS
Laxakola for Babies.—It is the best and most effective remedy for children. BEST because it is pure and safe being made entirely of harmless ingredients. BEST because it is non-irritating and never grips or causes pain or irritation. BEST because it is sure and never fails. BEST because "Children like it and ask for it." BEST because its tonic properties are so good and so strengthening that it keeps the little ones in fine, hearty condition.
It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent cathartics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fevers it is invaluable.
A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation.
"My baby is 14 months old and is teething. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and I tried I would never pull him through. I was the first to ask for a new dress, I is allowed him to medicate him, and I know what it was to close my eyes or night. I gave him a new drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I got it to him a few times, and it worked like a charm and he no longer prefers for all night. I was a great deal better. I got him to wear LAXAKOLA, and I think it would give nothing else to their sick babies."
MRS. MARY DALLEY, 257 First Street, South Boston.
Laxakola for Young Girls on the threshold of womanhood, has been found invaluable.
When they become pale and languid, face bloodless, eyes dull, head aching, feet and hands cold, appetite gone or abnormal, and their systems generally run down, they need building up, and their blood needs cleansing.
Give them LAXAKOLA; its gentle bowel action to cleanse, and its tonic properties to build up the system, will show immediate and most beneficial results.
It acts promptly, surely but gently on the bowels, and while stimulating the liver to increased activity, its tonic properties strengthen the nerves, renew vitality and restore color to the face and life and animation to the whole system. It is the only tonic laxative that strengthens and tones them up.
Laxakola for Mothers.—It is particularly valuable and useful to women, especially mothers, as it is a gentle and safe remedy to use during all conditions of health whenever their peculiar and delicate constitutions require a mild and efficient laxative and tonic; while to nursing mothers, worn out with the care of infants and whose systems therefore are particularly susceptible to disease, LAXAKOLA directly appeals.
It clears the complexion, brightens the eye, sharpens the appetite, removes muddy and blotched condition of the skin and cures sick headache to a certainty by removing the cause.
To women suffering from chronic constipation, head-aches, biliousness, dizziness, sallowness of the skin and dyspepsia, LAXAKOLA will invariably bring relief and a positive and permanent cure.
What Mrs. Edw. Purch, E. Palestine, O., July 12, says about LAXAKOLA. "March 11, 1991. Received your sample, it has done so much good, send me a see, bottle," March 12. "Bottle came sale, did me a lot of good, drugs here don't keep it, so enclosed is too, please send me quickly another bottle. The last bottle did me so much good, want another at once." April 11. "Enclosed is too, for one more bottle LAXAKOLA. It has done me much good."
Laxakola for Old Folks. In the Autumn and Winter of Life, when the various organs through long years of action have become more or less sluggish, it becomes necessary to stimulate them by some remedy best adapted to that purpose. So long as the stomach and bowels are doing their work properly and the liver and kidneys are active and strong, your food is assimilated properly, your blood is kept pure and rich, and your nerves are strong. The feeling of nervousness, general weakness and debility means that the whole system is run down and needs a general toning up.
That LAXAKOLA DOES IT, has been proved beyond all question. Its gentle warming, soothing action on the bowels, liver and kidneys, stimulates them to increased activity, cleanses the blood, quickens the circulation, and puts the whole system in a condition of health and enables it to ward of disease, while its tonic properties tone up the system and keep it healthy.
Laxakola Does It.
Blotched, sallow, unwholesome and muddy skin, with its consequent malformation, often leading to morbid skin and aversion to society and treat it with care. A way to clear the complexion and restore it to its normal healthy, velvety condition is to clean out the entire system purify the blood and remove the bacteria.
