J. Simpson. In last week's Commoner Mr. Bryan discusses, "How rich should one be" and gives some very interesting reading. "No one," he says, "is in a position to answer the question authoritatively, although there are certain general principles which should govern the solution." The most important of those principles which he gives is how much should a man eat? A number of excerpts from the article in question will prove very interesting. "No one can justify the overloading of the stomach merely to tickle the palate or to satisfy anunnatural appetite. The welfare of man is above the monetary pleasures of gluttony, and so is the welfare of the body more to be considered than epicurian delights * * * If man has no higher purpose in life than to eat, he is lower than the beasts forhe neglects to feed the mind and the soul. There are things which money cannot buy. * * * The creator was not so unkind as to make one's highest enjoyment rest upon so unsubstantial foundation as dollars, nor does he have an out joy in proportion to one's earthly possessions. Compare the hapiness of the virtues cottage covered by those souls are held together by the indissouible bonds of love with the estranged occupants of a palace. To compare the uplift delights of one who follows the path of duty, with the revelries of the profligate with the inherited millions at his disposal in "The highest purpose that a man that have is the betterment of the man family. * * * The marble statue and in form than any writing feature; its hands do no mischief; to feet run on no errands of evil and on lips speak neither lie nor blas- a enemy. It is a low creature of man that estimates him by his negative qualities. He must be positively tended to be respected. His back even a bit bend, must help to bear his thorns load. His hands tho some- nises idle or worse than uselessly as employed must have a part in the appling and moulding of theworld; so tongue, tho it may stammer or the sometimes utter what the heart would a- retract, must be the vehicle of a mother and a broader truth than can be found within selfish limits." This is all very beautiful—intense, but after all "How much should unknown?" How much should one self And if some one gets too much— Dont Suffer With Hea When you See GASOLINE SEDALIA MISSOURI. JUNE 20 e. g. Mr. Carnegie—who and by what means would you make him disgorge? Mr. Herbert Spencer speaking of property in land—see social statistics early edi—says that if a man may truly and justly own a few acres he may own many or indeed the entire earth and regulate the doings of those upon it. I would that Mr. Bryan discuss the correlative of this question. By so doing we would get something more definite. Ever keeping in mind that as to use-value the earth is worth only so much and that at any given time there are only so many to use it, will Mr. Bryan please to tell us "How poor should one be?" The colored people of our city have already begun to get ready for August 4th and the indications are beginning to look as though we were going to have another war between ourselves for the crowd. About three weeks ago we were informed by W. B. Williams and others that the majority of the colored people wanted to spend Aug. fourth out of the city, and that he and others had arranged to run a big excursion. Healso said that the reason why they wanted to go out of town this year was because the merchants and business men of the city would not do anything in the way of helping the colored people of our city in bringing thousands of visitors here to spend their omney and that they would arrange to go to some other town this year. During last week we notice that another commemorative event to hold a big celebration in the city on August 4th. Mr. August Jackman and James Newbils are at the head of this movement and they claim that this year's celebration will exceed that of last year, the Liberty park has already been secured by them for this day and the matters is now being pushed to the highest. Mr. Jackman and Newbils had this park last year and made quite a success but they said they did not realize much from the blowout. So the battle is now on and from all appearances will get hotter and hotter until the final day. The TIMES has only this to say in regard to the matter, that we are always for Sedalia and her people first and the neighboring towns next, and if we can draw a big crowd of colored people to our city on August 4th and GETTING READY FOR AUGUST FOURTH. they leave two or three the lars in our city, it benefits some way, and hence it is of every individual to work own city. But the fact that considerable money to make tive celebration and the couple's means are so very liny the merchants who realize a ebration fund should dona and help the boys and if or won't then we don't blame ple for going elsewhere and ing. And again, if the couple of our city want to hold ebration it should be unived open so that the white pin join in and help make it an public can derive some of its and not individuals alway our churches have a chance the treasurer from these pubs have a joint meeting and committees for the different w the celebration, and then we canore hep from the white mere railroad and street cars, and we would not have a gang p this and that way. ABOUT TIME TO It it about time for the red men of our city who have always did take leading parts in or campaigns, to begin organizing anger ready for the next big fight newspring and fall. The negro voters of Sedalia are rapidly using their power in all political battles, and at the ne they are going now and from the actions in the last fall's campaign they will soon be powerless and hapless to any party, and the man who loves his race and who will make every honest effort to advance them in the political world is becoming powerless and hopeless. Something must be done and it must be done at once or all future elections must be set down upon, they must not rule the people who stand for principle, right and justice, for if they do and they continue the way they did in the past few years, selling their votes for small and large sums of money, without regard to principle or the man, they are voting for, we would not be surprised when we wake up and find that the negroes of Sedalia are not allowed to vote again, when we let the class of men control the negro votes of Sedalia and Pettis county, we need never expect to keep a negro janitor or policeman or got even a negro clerk or judge at the election, not saying a word about anything else. So we appeal to the thinking class of negroes today, don't sit still and let your duty in this respect go undone. You are the light of your race in this city, you must make it shine, in every manner of life and do your part by fighting down evil that is dragging the negroes of Sedalia down as fast as time can roll around. Last Sunday was observed as children's day at the C. M. E. church. Quite an elegant program was rendered during the day and night. The children's program was rendered in the afternoon, and the program for the older members and friends at night Some of the most important features of the evening was the addresses delivered by Rev. J. W. Stimond, Ldward Thomas and Wm. Johnson. Professionals, amateurs and every one interested in the game before making their base ball purchases should not fail to see the swell line carried by Gieschen & Viebrock, hardware and sporting goods dealers, 116 West Main st. Spauldings goods head the list but they also carry others of the most reputable manufacturers of the country. A special large selection of bats and mitts. It is said the Blues got on a winning streak --- as soon as they got their balls Gieschen & Viebrock's. Rev. E. D. Burns and members of the Free Will Baptist church are arranging to have the corner stone laying of their new church July 18, when the members, led by their able pastor expect to have a grand time. Efforts are being made to have a big parade, headed by the Queen City Cornet band, and followed by the Masonic orders and members of this church. The bills will be out shortly announcing the entire program. Rev. Burns is doing good work, and deserves the hearty patronage of Sedalia church goers. The attitude of Booker T. Washington with regard to higher education for the Negro is amplified when it is known that there isn't a Negro in the faculty of Fisk University. Only three negroes in Atlanta university and none in Lincoln, while Tuskegee institute gives employment to 28 negroes who have finished a full or partial college course. While these peseismic race prophets are condemning Mr. Washington and his school, yet it remains for Booker T to provide employment for the graduates of the institutes to which these calamity howlers take occasion to refer. Tuskegee institute is doing more for the elevation of the negro intellectually, morally and industrially than any negro institution in the country. And that negro man who masters the curriculum of Howard, Yale or Cornell and who puts it to no use is simply a fool with a good memory. It is to be regretted that there are not more institutions which manifest the same kind of praatical interest in college education that Tuskegee institute does. forward in life with the determination to do all the good he can and to leave the world better for his having lived therein. He should consider that he was not made for himself alone, but for society, for mankind and for God and whether rich or poor, high or low, he should take life like a man, take it just as though it were as it—an earnest, vital essential affair. Take it just as though you personally were born to the task of performing a merry part in it, as though the world had waited for your coming. We must live for something, and for something worthy of life and its capabilities and opportunities, for noble deeds and achievements; every man and every woman has his or her assignments in the duties and responsibilities of daily life. We are in the world to make the world better to lift it up to higher levels of enjoyment and progress, to make the hearts and homes brighter by devoting to our fellows our best thoughts, activities and influences This is lifes grandest purpose. The great purpose of living is twofold in character. The one should never change from the time reason takes the helm; it is to live a life of manliness, of purity and of honor, to live such a life that whether rich or poor your neighbor will honor and ressect you as a man of sterling principles. The other is to have some business in the due performance of which you are to put forth all your exertions. It matters not so much what it is as whether it be honorable, and it may change to suit varying circumstances. When these two objects, character and high aim, are fairly before a youth what them He must ain those objects, he must work as well as pray County Officials. J. H. Bothwell, Rep...Representative Geo. LOUIS EXCURSION At a meeting of the Woman's Baptist Home Mission Society in Buffalo the past week a resolution was adopted declaring that the feeling against negroes manifested by many white people and the idea that negroes were not capable of developing a sturdy moral character were un-Christian and not justified by the findings of missionaries working among them. The sight of some of our girls mounting men's bicycles, assisted by half-grow boys is becoming a matter of common occurrence and one to be regretted exceedingly. Girls are fast losing what little modesty they did pretend to have, and are convincing observers that modesty is a thing of the past. The mothers of these girls have not the slightest idea as to their whereabouts and apparently do not exert themselves to find out. (Methodist Episcopal Church.) A HUNTER ROOMING HOUSE 242 West Pacific Street The old proverb; "To be at peace prepare for war," is the secret of the larger part of life's successes, whether of nations or individuals. The difference between the healthy, happy mother who has healthy children to nurse and nourish, and the weak, nervous mother, with a weakling child, is mostly a difference of preparation. The great preparative for motherhood is Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It tranquilizes the nerves, encourages the appetite and induces refreshing sleep. It gives the mother strength to give her child. It imparts elasticity and strength to the organs of maternity so that the baby's advent is practically painless. "I take pleasure in writing you to let you know about your 'Favorite Prescription'," says Mr. E. E. Fricke, of Pittsburgh, Menard Co., N.J., who has been with her life, and after trying everything I could think of I made up my mind to try 'Favorite Prescription'. I sent to Chicago and got six bottles, which my wife took, a tablespoonful of milk, and until the day felt better after taking the first bottle, and when baby was born he weighed nine and a half pounds. To-day he is six months old and weighs twenty-two pounds. He is as good a baby as he is as healthy as any baby could be, and also the doctor says your 'Favorite Prescription' was the cause of such a healthy baby. I felt I owed you this much for the good you did this to others who may be in need of such help, and you may refer them to me, as I would glad to tell of the good of such a valuable medicine." We do not ask you to send us your money until we have proved to your own satisfaction that It is a dangerous thing to give little babies violent cathartics that rack and rend their little bodies. DON'T DO IT—give them LAXAKOLA. For constipation, coated tongue, simple colds, restlessness, loss of sleep and fevers it is invaluable. A few drops can be given with safety to very young babies, and it will often relieve colic by expelling the wind and gas that cause it. It will aid digestion, relieve restlessness, assist nature and induce sleep. Great relief is experienced when administered to young children suffering from diarrhea, accompanied with white or green evacuations, as LAXAKOLA neutralizes the acidity of the bowels and carries out the cause of the fermentation. "My baby is 4 months old and is teething. He was sick and I tried a good many things, but nothing seemed to relieve him. I had a doctor, who said it was inflammation of the bowels, and that I would never pull him through perhaps if we were under siege. When I saw he was getting worse, I stopped giving him the medicines, as he kept hot and we were not sure what to do. When I saw he was not sure what to know it was to close my eye or day or night, I gave him a few drops of LAXAKOLA and it relieved him. I gave it to him a few times, and it worked like a charm, and he jersey pretty fair all night. It is a great deal better than the usual LAXAKOLA, and I think it would give nothing else to their sick babies." MRS. MARY DALEY, 997 First Street, South Boston, Mass.
