VOLUMN X No 20 FARMERS' CONVENTION. Second Annual Meeting a Success—Resolutions Adopted and Officers Elected. The second annual meeting of the Farmers' Convention was held at Lincoln Institute on Saturday, November 7th, 1903. President B. F. Allen had already organized and classified the students according to counties, and when the farmers came they had but to take the seats set apart for persons from a given county. Banners with the names of the counties upon them designated the delegation if county or state, for there were several states represented a student body. The convention was a great success, and besides those present, many letters were received from persons expressing their desire to be present, but owing to the losses occasioned by the floods, found themselves unable to come. The convention adopted the following resolutions: Whereas, We are living in a state, a greater part of whose citizens are engaged in agriculture and kindred pursuits, and all of whose citizens are affected thereby; and Whereas, We believe that education is to prepare us for complete living and that we shall not be prepared therefor if we do not teach our children the dignity of labor and show them the strength and independence and manliness that will result from ownership; be it Resolved. That we deplore the deepseated prejudice against farming that exists among our people; that we shall encourage among them agricultural and kindred pursuits, and shall endeavor to take the element of drudry out of it and make it as dignified as any other trade or profession by encouraging a better and higher standard of living; by owning our farms and equipping them with the latest and best field and garden implements; by buying less and producing more of what we use on our farms; by diversifying our crops and systematizing our work and calculating intelligently on our expenditures; by discountening the credit and mortgage systems and any other practice that will tend to ruin; by encouraging fruit growing, stock and poultry raising and breeding, canning and dairying; by building good homes and making them comfortable and attractive; by subscribing for good papers and magazines and keeping our eyes open for the best markets; by building good churches and school houses and asking for the best and most competent teachers and preachers; by encouraging our boys and girls to become peaceable and good citizens and to make themselves indispensable to the communities in which they live. Resolved further, That from reports made here and now and from testimony of those who have observed, because of special interest, that the spirit which the first convention sought to inculcate and the principles for which these conventions stand, have already been accepted and are being acted upon by the colored farmers of the state; and that we continue but with renewed interest and effort to organize conventions in those counties where there ar enough negroes to warrant it; that we encourage and urge exhibits of farm products here as tangible evidence of the improvements we make in methods and economy from year to year as results of these conventions. solved, Furthermore, That SEDALIA MISSOURI, NOVEMBER 28 19●3 we thank Dr. B. F. Allen, president of Lincoln Institute and president of the convention, for his ceaseless interest and great efforts, and that we shall do our utmost to carry out the aims of these resolutions. Respectfully submitted.—Committee. EASTERN TRIP. By H. J. Burton, Jefferson City, Mo. My first writing was mostly of Philadelphia, the city of many churches. Sept. 19, 7 a. m., I am on the train headed for New York City with 600 others. To our right coming into New York City, at a distance the Goddess of Liberty appeared in a mantle of fog from the bay standing upon a pedestal of marble. At the station, 8:30, we went to the boat and in 30 minutes we landed at Cedar street, New Yorn City. Rev. Sanders and your writer went to the great Childs restaurant and had our breakfast Here they could serve 200 meals at once. From here we went to the custom house, on the steps of which stands the statue of George Washington, where he was sworn in as president of the United States in 1788. We boarded the elevated cars and went to Coney Island. Rev. Sanders slipped off his shoes and stood in the tide of the ocean. We returned to Castle Garden and went into the aquarium and saw the fishes and wonders of nature. On Washington street is the great Babbitt soap factory that gives work to 2,200 men. We were on Wall street but did not get the money, and at the west end of this street stands the old Trinity church, the graves of those who died for their independence, and her are hundreds of crumbling and moss covered slabs and monuments which were erected to their memory. We crossed the great Brooklyn bridge and passed beneath its mammoth balcony. After going over this city and traveling about forty miles in New York City, at 6 p. m., we crossed the waters to our train, going back to Philadelphia to attend the meeting on Sunday. The sermons we heard equalled those in Missouri. For the most money the state of Arkansas received the banner. Let Missouri take it in 1904. n Monday I went to Washington, D. C. Mr. John Thomas had me go with him. He is a cook on the dining car; it is 136 miles from Philadelphia. Wilmington, Newark and Baltimore are the largest cities on the B. & O. railroad. At the later city the baggage is mostly handled by colored men. The tunnel is five miles long, the country is rough between Washington and Philadelphia. A railroad porter at Washington conducted me to 105 D street, northeast, at the beautiful home of my most esteemed friend, Mr. John Thomas, of Tinton, and his respected wife, the daughter of Mrs. M. Henderson of Jefferson City, Mo. My stay at their home was indeed a happy one. After spending an hour in their home I went to the White house and many other public buildings. At the capitol I went through the main rooms senate and also the representative hall, and in the center under the dome we can see the statues of our fallen statesmen. Benton and Blair are standing in the northeast. The cartoons of many battles are on the walls. The national museum hall of 1879 contains the wonders from many nations, the specimens and relies of skill for centuries back. The locomotives of 1828 and 1830. The national library is the palace of nations—it is of matchless beauty, and when at the station where Garfield was assassinated, I thought of the evils of immigration. I returned to Philadelphia and Rev. Sanders and I went to see the school children—white and the colored—pouring out for home. We went to Fairmount park, a beautiful place for amusement. Colored people are in all parts of the city. On Tuesday we left for Buffalo, New York. After spending some time here we went to Niagara Falls, 35 miles. This is the table land of New York and is an extensive plateau. The Niagara Falls are the wonders of the world. The American falls is 167 feet high, the Horse-shoe falls is 158 feet high. The contour line of the American fall is 1060 feet. When looking at these waters I said how did rs. A. E. Taylor go through these waters in 1901. Fifteen million cubic feet of water pass over the falls per minute. Across the Niagara river is the great steel bridge, 1240 feet abov water. The boat, the Maid of the Mist, will carry you up and let you kiss the falling waters of Niagara. I went up on it but Rev. Sanders said there was too much water for him, so I went into the shower of the falls without him. Here you can see the rainbow any time in the day. Rev. Sanders, Rev. McNeil, of Kansas City, and the writer went into Canada, and a wealthy colored man carried us in his carriage, and we went and stood in the Niagara, and after singing we offered prayer to God, thanking him for keeping us on our way and to look upon his wonderful works and matchless feat in formation of the falls. We went to the whirl pool rapids, water running 27 miles an hour, 200 feet deep and 300 feet wide, and at 4 p. m., we left for Detroit, down through Canada. Some odd things are to be seen. Miles and miles of fence made of pine tree stumps drawn up out of the ground. The Baptist national convention will meet in Texas in Texas in 1904. My next writing will be on lynching and disfranchisement. In Sedalia among the colored People Thanksgivens Day was obsered last Thursday among the colored People as usual, and old Turkay was staughtered on every hand in spite of the high price of which they were sold. The churches all held their usual Thanksgiving services during the forenoon and in the afternoon dinners were served, The M. E. church ladies served an elegant dinner during the day and night to a large number. The A. M. E church was strictly up to the hour with their dinner, which would have pleased any King or Queen their decoration was first-class and everything up to date as usual. The ladies of the Morgon Street Baptist church also served a delicious dinner, consisting of nearly every good to eat, the same can be TIMES New Fall Gloaks. E. and Free Will Baptist churches, each had a good time and al held and had their part of the people The members of the Sons and Daughters of Charity also held a successful supper at their hall. AT LIBERTY PARR AALL. The banquet given at the Liberty Park hall, Thanksgiven night, under the management of Lewis Cowans for the benfit of the G. U. O. of O, F., was the grandest affair that has been given by the colored people of this city for times, the large dancing hall, parlor and dinner hall was decorated to the highest and every table was loaded down, with many delicious things to eat. The Queen City Band and Author Channels furnished the music, of which over one hundred persons enjoyed their sweet strains as they glided to and fro across the slippery floor under the directions of Samuel Ramsey until 12 o'clock. There were visitors present from Boonville, Fayette, Warrenburg and other points The affair was a delightful one from beginuing to end, no drunk- ardness but everything firstclass order. Other people owe you mrney—and you owe us, and we want it because we need it to pay the other fellow. The Jefferson City Tribune in its last week's issue spoke in very ugly tones about the football game played in this city last Saturday between the Lincoln Institute team and the George R Smith college team, in which it said the Lincoln Institute boys would never play the Dewey boys again; that the Deweys treated them most horribly, cutting some of their faces, etc. Well, Jeff City has but little ground to kick on, judging from reports of the game played between these teams in Jeff City a year ago. The game was much rougher than the one of last Saturday, and if the boys were ill bred and knocked around, it was no more than the way they treated the Dewey's in Jeff City. But if a stranger should go to see this team play a game, they would naturally be surprised to know that either of them were from an educational and industrial school, not saying anything about a christian school, from this rough playing or play-fight. We should think that young men, who are attending these schools, should be as gentlemanly while playing football or any other game under the name of their school, as they would while under the eyes of their teachers in the college, and if their education goes no further than their school rooms, there is but little use of their parents to spend money and send them abroad to school. We have no rough words to say about either of these teams as being football players because both are considered good, and the facts are that for real playing the Dewey's have them bested a little, and for fighting football playing it is a draw. POOR BARNEY IS DEAD There was a dog in our town, His color was a brown, He lived among us many a year, And lived so long he could not hear. THE DEMOCRATIC CITY It is "Negro Domination," But it Means "Negro Degradaion." The democratic cry of Negro domination is a misleading term. What the democratic party really means is Negro degradation or humiliation. The democratic party does not fear negro domination, but they do desire negro degradation. The American negroes are on the upward march to the higher plane of man and womanhood. The American negroes, since their emancipation by the republicans, are living purer and better lives, and becoming educated and more intelligent, are seeking gher and better things in life. But Gorman and his followers are bitterly opposed to this aspiration in the negro, and in order that the democrats may impede the upward march of] the negro, they raise the cowardly yelp of "Negro domination." But while a just God sits in glory, the democratic party will never succeed in its damnable efforts.
