THE Gathered by The Forum's Live Force of Special Correspondents VOL. 10. NO. 52 News by Co Gathered by The Forum's Live PEORIA Louis J. Gauss should be elected, W. A. Clinch should be elected. Oscar Heinrich should be elected. C. E. Shone should be elected. Lucas Butts should be elected. Dr. Geo, A. Zeller, by all means. These are among the leading men on the Republican ticket. Mr. John Galergher, present Recorder, has made a good record, no man could have been more satisfactory as a public servant. The wedding of Miss Foda Harrison and Mr. James was a big thing, they received "car load" of presents of the finest and most useful sort. Shelton and Fidler closed a 4 nights engagement here Wednesday, they stopped at Mrs. Freeman's, 100 Jackson St. Freemans and Forums on sale at 216 $ \frac{1}{2} $ N. Washington St. The Republican ticket commends itself to the voters and should have their loyal support. Jefferson Hotel men can secure the Freeman and other papers at 216 $ \frac{1}{2} $ N. Washington St. SOME ODDS AND ENDS Should anyone desire to find out for himself about the merits of the Negro newspapers coming to Peoria, let him compare one with the other, consider the news items. Note the towns carried weekly in its columns, and see the character and origin of its news matter. When this is done with fairness, one must give the vote to the FORUM. With the issue of Oct. 10, before me, and after carefully examining the same, I find no plate matter which is so common in Negro Newspapers. The Forum is set up weekly with all original matter. This is a commendable work and shows that somebody is on the job to give good service. I congratulate this paper for the clean cut work done. Again both the Forum and its Editor are old tried friends of Peoria. They have been on the job for many days. Is it fair that the citizens of Peoria should give due credit where it is merited? This being true, the Forum claims our first consideration. Think on this. The Liberty Party is here today, notwithstanding, the Peoria county Republican Headquarter's janitor on the contrary. This party's hat is in the ring, and the gods will see the fellow who tries to take it out. Do you see me? Now, we are all clean men on our ticket. The opening of the campaign at the city hall on Oct. 13, was Published Weekly in Springfield and Peoria Published Correspondents The Force of Special Correspondents a success. We are expecting to poll, at least one thousand votes on Nov. 3rd, for the Liberty Party ticket. The merchants of Peoria who are doing retail business are overlooking a valuable means of advertising. The Forum goes weekly into nearly every Negro home in the city. Hence, the story of your goods would become a weekly visitor to the homes of these citizens. Consider the FORUM as a means of advertising. Rev. B. N. Murrell, the beloved pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist church, has just received a call to the Negro baptist of St. Paul, Minn. This is the largest Negro baptist church in the state, if not in the North-west it is also the oldest. Should the call be accepted, Mt. Zion will loose a good man and a strong leader. This thing is to sorrowful to write about. However the call is now before him. The message says the call was unanimous. Rev. S. B. Jones has been returned as pastor of Ward Chapel A. M. E. church. The Rev. Jones is doing good work here and his return will mean so much for the people. There is an old saying; that your sins will find you. We are glad to note that your good works will be known. Hence good works have brought Rev. Jones and wife back to Peoria for another year. Congratulations to you and your wife Rev. Jones. Sunday, Oct. 18th, was Sunday school day for the churches of the city. The parade was a very large one in which our people made a good showing. There were more than eight thousand who joined in the parade to the colisium. A very fitting program was rendered. To accommodate the people, an overflow meeting was held at the First Congregational church God's work goes on. S. A. Askew, M. D. BLOOMINGTON The Republican ticket has the very ablest and the best men and these men should be elected. Mr. Riley, candidate for Judge is a clean man and an able, fair impartial lawyer; Mr. Flesher, will make a good sheriff; B. C. Moore's record for services as County Supt. of Schools, is the best McLean County ever had, he should be re-elected; Mr. Rice for County Treasurer, Mr. Rice is one of the most popular men in the county. The candidate for Coegress, Mr. Sterling, is an able man and should be returned. The two candidates for the Legislature are able conscientious men and should have the support of the colored voters of the district. --- FORUM "Be Ye Doers and not Sayers only." He has proven to be efficient and faithful to every trust. He has been a prosecutor and not a persecutor. Everyone has been treated with even handed justice. He has looked after every detail of the work of Peoria county coming under his observation. When he shall have completed his term the people will acclaim, "he has made as fine official in this capacity as we ever had." A. G. Forbes has worked hard on the important committees and his good office weight and proves effectual. All A. G. Forbes, the veteran Alderman from the fourth Ward has made such a splendid record in the council that he will, and should be, returned next Spring. The city needs to keep such men as safe guards for the city's progress. Mr. Forbes has worked hard on the budget and other important committees and his good offices have all had great weight and proves effectual. All praises for Forbes. Carl Woolf for Re-Election Spring the republicans of the seven elect Carl Woolf again. has made a good record and the seven him. He has not been silent on an ing the ward's best interests. Next Spring the republicans of the seventh Ward are going to elect Carl Woolf again. He has made a good record and the seventh Ward is proud of him. He is now serving out a third term, proof of popularity. During his administration Peoria has made phenominal progress, improvements of all kinds have been launched and operated successfully. He is truly a "common" man's friend and he has proven it. Mayor Woodruff is no "four flusher," but a sincere man, what he is, he is. Mayor Woodruff is no hypocrite either. He believes in law and decency, but he is also in favor of common sense. He has made the best mayor the city ever had, and his record stands out as a beacon light. We believe that, if the mayor will accept, he will be the choice for mayor next Spring again on the republican ticket. If he does, he will be re elected. He has shown by his large following, that he has the confidence and esteem of his constituents. He has been a true and faithful adherent to the republican party and her principles and not one honest man has ever attempted to prove that he is other, than a true and tried friend to every man. The Forum can endorse him in the highest terms and recommend him to the electorate of this great state as a champion of the right. A man of worth and integrity. Greater need hath no man than these requisites. E. L. ROGERS, Editor Forum, Springfield Springfield, Ill Support The Republican Ticket Support The Republican Ticket Every Colored man in the county will do himself and the county honor by supporting the republican ticket on November 3rd. Our status in the county is doubtful and the crisis is here. We have a chance to send a man to the United States Senate with ability, nerve and backbone in the person of L. Y. Sherman and we must do so. It is our duty and protection to do so. There is a bill before Congress now, forbidding Colored and white persons to even set and work in the governmens employ in the same rooms, and no Colored man or man of African blood or decent is allowed to occupy a position where such person will be over or in a position to give orders to any white person. This is a bill, our friends, fathered and backed by democrats. Mr. Sullivan will not espouse your cause after the election--you will have been paid. Sherman is a fearless, able man, and as Fred Douglas said: "The republican party is the ship, all else the sea." CULTURE CLUB J. E. THOMPSON, President EDITH ASCY, Secretary S. R. SATURDAY, OCT. 31, 1914 THEODORE ROOSEVELT Col Roosevelt is only 56 years old, he like Napoleon Bonaparte and Alexander the great and Shakespeare too, reach the Zenith of his career early. 56 years is young for Statesman or a great man. Roosevelt won international fame 10 years ago 46 years old; Shakespeare died at 52, and Alexander the great, at, we believe 32. The Ancient soil of Germany and Belgium is being fertilized with the blood and the bodies of the youth of those countries. Is is not a pity to do this? Put down this cruel war. O civilization, what private griefs have you, one against the other? Foot ball is here, but her life is nothing to be compared with base ball, as to longevity. How many times do you fellows want to be, or have to be told that, unless you do unto others as you would that others do unto you, you can't get to heaven when you die? If the Negroes read that bill the democrats are trying to get passed at Washington, we fail to see even how W. T. Scott, and A. Bender, the head of the 20,000 Negroes who form the coalition league, can vote democratic. If you are always thinking bad, ugly thoughts, ere long you will not only be bad but look ugly and bad, surely there is no one who desires to be ugly. No not one. We do not propose to acquiesce in the fight against noise only, in the pulpits and the good preachers are backing us up, don't you forget it. Anytime you wonder how you should, in regard to parties, go read history; read of Lovejoy, Charles Summer, William Lloyd Garrison, Fred Douglas, Lincoln and the Gettysburg address; "Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." Read of the trails and tribulations under which the men who compose the republican party or their decendants went, read the epitahs in every grave yard and see this great sight, then like Moses say; "I will now turn aside and see why this bush is not consumed." Do not forget what Soloman said, you who would be rich: "Wealth acquired dishonestly, will prove a curse," meditate over that sentence and show me a single exception to this rule, men have waxed rich by unscrupulous methods, but what did it profit them? For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world (riches) and lose his soul, reputation, character, all. Shakespeare said; "Good name in man or woman, dear my Lord, is the immediate jewel of the soul." Not the remote jewel, the immediate jewel. Our monthly contempo, the Industrial Journal, seem to have "it in" for the "Junior Benedictos," a coterie of young ladies, who have seen fit, for reasons, no one cares, to band themselves together and sail under the above appellation. We do not know, but we fear the attacks, or charges, are unwarranted and may chagrin the young ladies. We should be sure we are right before we sayaught against one another. "What private griefs the iluent. Astute Journal has, we know not." Suppose we do not hurt the tender feelings of these "fair damsels," but buoy them onward. That Meeting at St. Paul. We are surprised and almost astounded to hear of such a meeting being pulled of at St. Paul A, M.E. church last Monday evening at which all democratic candidates made speeches. It is said that it was not a political meeting, but we desire to know why were political men there and why were men of only one political faith there? We thought that church would be the last to allow such a gross error. The men may have spoken on the war, the Bible, the Darwin theory, but why chose all men of one faith, one Christ and one baptism? It is an irreparable error. We desire to see our churches purified, but you can't do it by going the wrong route. O tempora, O Mores. Sporting News.
