He has done more to help republicans to victory than any other single man and most of the time, he himself was not a candidate for office. At no time in his political history, has he gone amuck and bolted. When he and individual republicans had differences, those differences were fought out and settled within the party. He never sacrificed his party for personal "vengeance." He is considered now the best leader in county politics, and, under his leadership and management the republicans have won more victories and better ones than under any other for the past 12 years. He is called a natural born leader and is well liked by all, even men who sometimes are not with him, recognize in him special ability and leadership. He has done herculean work, not only in county politics, but city and state as well. The rank and file or "common people" like him because he is true to his word and believes in helping his friends and standing by those who stand by him. He never has been known to turn down a friend who had endeavored to stand by him and his friends and the great republican party. He is a good man to lead and whenever placed in command bring results. NO.38 COLORED BOY HERO COLORED BOY HERO Johnnie Smith, one of the employees at the Ira M. Dudley Livery Stable during the recent fire, is a hero and entitled to a Carnegie hero medal. During the fire, when no other would venture, Smiih plunged into the dense smoke and fire and rescued the favorite horse of Mrs. Dudley. He is said to have been given $50.00 for his heroism. 307 Mr. Gullett is a practicing lawyer and served 16 years in the Secretary of State's office, working from janitor up to legal advisor of the great office, and is therefore one of the best qualified men for the place in the state. WILSON OF ADAMS COUNTY Republican Candidate for Attorney General. Hon. Geo. H. Wilson, of Quincy, candidate for Attorney General on the republican ticket, has a conspicuous record for results achieved. Mr. Wilson has been a practicing lawyer for 20 years; was city Atty. of Quincy, served two terms as States Atty, of Adams Co. and has been a member of the General Assembly for 4 or 5 terms. During the last few years he has been the floor leader of the "dry" side of the legislature. He is a man of the genial disposition and very courteous to all. Mr. Wilson is Trustee of Illinois College, Jacksonville and closely allied with all the interests for up-lift and progress. Among the colored people he has many friends and he is a man who looks to high ideals and respects all men alike according as each man respects himself and deserves to be treated. As a lawyer, versed in all the fine details, Mr. Wilson ranks among the best in the state and will make one of the best state legal dispensers we have ever had. The office needs a man of high ideals, unimpeachable integrity, sagacity and wide legal experience. All these Mr. Wilson has and he is a man who will carry out the law in passing upon questions of law, regardless as to whom it touches. In Geo. H. Miss Margaret Riden, 1723 E. Capitol Ave. and Mrs. Watts, 1001 So. 17 St. attended the Exposition at Chicago. Rev. S. E. Manuel preached quite an impressive sermon Sunday at 11 A. M. The Union Giants baseball aggregation played the All Stars of Jacksonville last Sunday and it was one, if not the best game of the season, few errors were recorded on either side. The All Stars have a fine pitcher in the person of Mr. Trembone, who kept the Giants from scoring until the 8th. Poston also did clever work and Jacksonville failed to score until the 6th. and that on an error. The entire work was good. Battery for Springfield Poston, Anderson and Jones; for Jacksonville Trembone and Waffle. The score was: Union Giants 4; All Stars 2. The Giants made all of their runs in the 8th and the All Stars made one in the 6th and one in the 9th inning. The game for Sunday in scheduled for Jacksonville again. Mr. J.
