It certainly would have been quite a relief to the people of this country at least 50,000,000 of them to have gotten ridof the old’ blather skite. ‘There is a chance that there'll be two political parties in Alabama, The Democrats are fighting among them- selves and perhaps a combination of Populists, white Republicans and the few Afro-Americans who are not dis: franchised, may be affected. ‘The questién of reducing Southern representation will be taken up early ‘in the session of the present Congress. The Southerners may yet find that they nave made a great mistake in disfranchising the Afro-American. GREEN BROWN TELLS OF HiS VISIT TO LITTLE ROCK COLLEGES. White atyor saynite the Duty of hs Hace to Make and Execute Lawi-Bishop Tyree ens eae, Little Rock—I hope the readers will pardon me for not writing for several days, and now I have dipped my pen in a new bottle of ink and will be able to send them a letter each week now. T have been a Uttle excited too, for I have been traveling on the iron horse and that fellow has been so naughty that I thought every minute would be the last and T would be hurled into eternity. I have traveled a few miles, and Tam now in the Southland which will be my theme for several weeks to come. I Velieve in my soul that the future of ‘our people is in the South, though down here tliey hang men’ without trial, they burn them to death, yet 1 am of the opinion that there is a bright day coming, and we will be able to stand when it comes. ‘The colored People down here are getting homes, going in business and educating ‘thelr children, and I have seen a few of them in the educational world, 50 listen until T can have my say about them. I was born on the dark of the moon with a skim over my eye, hence I have never scen until today the necessity of getting an education in my head. 1 can see sights and hear voices, can tel! the past, present and future, can cail up the dead, and have them taik with you, ean teli you the kind of hus band or’ wife you are going to get. Tean get you a'good wife or bad one. 1 can go into the grave yard and cause the dead to speak out of their graves and tombstones to walk and talk, and for this you will see that I am a great man. [have been selling Icky bags, keeping away witches and hoodoos, T have gone in grave yards and dug up bodies for little finger bones and put them in a bag with red pepper and Inc times and sold them for good luck and possessing all this power 1 have ‘not felt. that. there were any People smarter than T was so I had them fooled and did not ‘bother about school. “Now I have passed forty and It fs too late tor me to bother about education, and wil discuss things av 1 see them’ in order to let our young people Know that they must: prepare for the duties of life and not fool around, Fp NOW come let. us, reason together. ‘This 1s one of the educational centers of this section of the country. I have | been to visit the schools and meet the people in business and in it all | have felt much-encouraged. "I have seen the stars in the East and in other parts of the globe. The Arkansas Baptist College was among the frst to claim.my attention and at the head fof it is Prot. Joseph A. ‘Booker. a ne- tive of this state and’ a young man Who has worked his way to the front. 1 am proud to tell” you that Prot, Booker is doing a gobd work in this town.. I heard the children recite in Greek, Hebrew and Latin, and I never heard ‘such funny words since I have been @ black man, and T have asked myself the question whether or not white folks could talk like that for 1 have not been in thelr schools. ‘The college is located at the function of two street car tracks, and the proper ty, covering a whole block, 1s. con sidered valuable,” I do not remember the names of all the teachers, so I will move down to the next school and sequaint you with it Philander Smith College ts an in- stitution of the M. Dr. Jackson has been in the work for many years. = Lhaye.had the pleasure of meeting Some of the Methodist preachers down here, they are big and mall and 1 have met Dr. John T. Jenifer, from Baltimote. Dr. Jenifer looks. like a white man and he travels with the white folks. I heard that he lett Bishop Tyree and a lot of preachers the other day and rode with the white folks and there was nothing said about |it, but some of tho preachers are rats: ing the old nick and say that they wil meet him at General Conference. I do not approve of any such course and hope that they will not do what they ‘say that they are going to do. I went to conference to attend it at Gurdon, and heard Mayor Osborne, a white than, deliver an address of wel come. He’ sald: “It is the duty” of the white folks to make all the laws and execute them, and explain. them to the colorad people, and it is the duty of the white folks to gee that the colored people obey the laws and not to mistreat the colored folks.” "Bishop ‘Tycec, who is as black as the ace ot spades, turned right pale and red in the face before replying to the ad aress. He did not bite his tongue, but talk. ed right‘out in church, and’ they had an “Old Aunt Dolly’ Time” down there is Gurdon. “It you should ask 8 hog,” #etorted: Bishop Tyree, “whe [should make the Iaws, Who should be president of the-United States and the lake, he would very quiekly re ply a hog: hence I do not blame you for thinking-as you do, and you must not blame mo for thinking as I do ‘We do not think that the making anc execution of law should be entirely tu our hands, for we are broad enough tc give you a hand in it, and we insist that. we own a part of the land,_ we pay ‘our taxes, and we must have a hand in law-making. Longdon and Eric Hudson, introducing Miss Agnes Herndon and a strong company, is the announcement made by the management for the attraction next week. As a rule the proprietors of the play represent it to be all that it really is when making the introduction, and quite frequently the patron is disappointed by the adjectives used, but such is not the case with "Man's Enemy." It is a first-class, thrilling and sensational melodrama—all that is claimed for it and more, too. The play teaches a strong moral, and if always played by as good a company of actors as supports Miss Herndon there will be few empty seats before any stage on which it appears. The story is well developed, and deals with the temptation that beset the wealthy youth of London and the retri- bution that follows the yielding to the same. The production is very elaborate, the scenes are all new, not a bit overdrawn and are the work of an artist of ability. Mr. Andruss, acting as Harry Stanton, the wayward son of Gen. Arthur Stanton, brought him many calls. His struggles to overcome the temptation of strong drink and to free himself from the clutches of the designing Sarah Drake, alias Banks, a pretty woman of the town, and Tom Drake; his duel with Count Lanski, resulting in the death of the latter, and hand-to-hand incidents of the Drake, are all well-done audiences. Mr. Drake that thrill the entire audience. Mr. Drake is a good actor. 'Miss Agnes Herman,' Sarah Drake is perfect natural, and that has been said her ability as an actress is well described. Mr. W. There is nothing wanting in his part, as he accurately illustrates the actions of a designing sport, who is always on the lookout for big game. Shad Thine, who is killed by Harry Stanton while he is the Russian masseuse, and then reappears in the play as P. C. Smithers, a metropolitan policeman, deserves merit for his work. The humor of the production is nearly all left to Isaac Barnett, the Hebrew who will "never neglect an opportunity." Maurice Linder takes care of this role and never appears without causing a laugh or beaten up, and Every other member of the cast deserving of praise for his or her work, as it appears that so good a company throughout is engaged in the production of any melodrama.
