The Topeka Capital has interviewed many prominent men on its Sheldon edition but so far we have failed to note any expression from that greatest of all Topeka editors, Col, Jeltz. Lawrence World. Ish dot so bre't Brady(?) Galen Nichols is not having as smooth a time for County Attorney as has been reported. He has served four years as assistant and most people recognizes the fact that a change is liable to take place. There are some fools who live for themselves, yet we live for those who love us. Hence you see people who do not love us may not expect for us to live for them. Rev Sheldon seems to have played in hard lines for evidence. John McCrow his principal witness spoiled the whole thing by getting so drunk that the patrol had to be made his escort. This is an example. The loud mouth Parlimentarians want jobs again, some for the Legislature and some for county offices. This way of keeping a gang well fed and cared for at the trough is just about as bad as taking care of Cy Leiand. We want it understood that we intend to do right by candidates who desire to give us a fair consideration. But those who do not take this in consideration will find that Jordon will be a hard road for them to travel just bear this in mind we are not going to remain here eight years and allow you to give us the worst of it. It I can be of any assistance to the old soldiers, the laboring classes and the business interests of this county my time and best energies are at their service. Two years ago I was asked to be a candidate for this same position, but then declined in favor of an older and more deserving Union Veteran. Believing that this request is made in good faith I do so feel at liberty to decline it and, therefore, accept the invitation and consent to be a candidate for the position named. SNATTINGER For Councilman--3rd Ward. One of the most prominent citizens who wants to be nominated for Councilman in the third ward is Mr. M. Snattinger who has been one of the oldest and most reliable business men in this city. For many years he was formerly of the firm of Barnum and Co., but for the last twelve months having severed his connection he holds a desk at present in the Building and Loan Association office 115 West sixth street. Mr. Snattingers campaign is managed by his affable son-in-law better known as Mr. Doc. Newman who is well acquainted with the colored people throughout this city. Every one knows Mr. Newman who is giving a good deal of his time and attention to his father. in-law's campaign This means he is on gaining ground and ere long we shall see. Mr Snattinger is one of those capable and conscientious business men who knows nothing but Topeka and its progress. If elected member of the City Council every one can rely upon him being a just man and one who will represent the interest of all classes. JUDGE DOLMAN'S CHANGEOFHEART Have our readers heard the latest(?) Well we will attempt to tell you. The man Dolman, Probate Judge, who has held the office virtually four years, had a fit a few days ago so rumor goes and while officially that his stenographer, Jno. Patterson resigned it is again alleged by Dolman's friends that he was let out, Dolman giving as his reason that he was on his last term which he is, and that he would in future try to get along with one clerk, Mrs. C. Garrard an estimable gentleman. It however, thus occurred that a shower of politicians came over the would be Bill McKinley and it is said a change of heart taken place and he sent for "Mamma's colored baby boy," but in the person of his old friend and servant John. Why did he do this when the snow was on the cold gray earth? Because having had a revelation from a tew big mouth politician that they would stay by him he concluded he wanted a third term. Good for poor Jonn who was innocent of all that was taking place. But now, things are as quiet about the Probate Judge's office as if nothing had happened. A reporter called to consult him on this important subject and he misunderstood us and began to talk about announcement for him, but we assured him that part had never entered our minds. We were surprised at his wanting a third term and expecting the colored peoples support and we tried hard to trot his deputy out for the place assuring him not with standing his friends he could not be re-elected. We take great pleasure in assuring Mr. Do/man most anything he wants that it will be utterly impossible for him to be re-elected. He may place his good name and record in every paper in this county and still he will be defeated by the colored people as well. Beville, who in to day's issue announces his candidate for Probate Judge, is a well known and a popular resident of Shawnee County having lived in Topeka for over fourteen years. In 1885 he entered the employ of the A. T. & S. F. railroad in the Auditor's office, which position he occupied for over four years. He was appointed chief clerk of the Probate Judge's office by Judge Elliott in January '91, and continuously occupying this position for seven yeas, thereby securing an invaluable education in the intricate workings of the office. It is not given to many men to gain the confidence and esteem of the public so throughly as Mr. Bevelle has done. He has always been extremely popular, not only for his courtesy and desire to please, which are among his distinguishing characteristics but for the thoroughness with which he accomplishes every thing he undertakes and the marked intelligence he brings to bear on difficult questions. He is not without political experience having served as Republican representative before coming to Kansas, and is intensely loyal to his party. Certainly the Republicans of Shawnee County are highly favored in having such a man as Mr. Bevelle in the race for Probate Judge. Ex. Mr. Bevelle will make a first class official in that capacity. He has served in that office long enough to know just how to manage the affairs of it. He is honest, capable and efficient. When he was in the office as clerk here-to-fore he made it a specialty to serve all classes alike. No voter need be ashamed to vote for Mr. Bevelle, he is all right. A CORRECTION. As there seems to have been some misunderstanding in regard to Candidates who seek a third term. We want to say while we intimated that third termers must go we had no reference to judicial officers as, none of them had at that time announced, and neither did we think they would. We have nothing against any judicial officer who seeks a third term neither would we have said it had we known there were going to be candidates in like manner. We apologize to no potentate but we desire to be right. JUDGE JAMISON Is liable to enter the race for County Commissicner. Since many of the friends of Judge Jamison are urging him to became a candidate for County Commissioner, he is in a very strange prediction; he at first and have along refused, but many of his large number of friends insist that a prominent colored gentlemen like the Judge, should represent the colored brethern in that capacity. Judge Jamison is a noted attorney and has practiced in this city since 1891. He was six years justice of Peace and served the people faithfully. "The leaders," especially of his race have great confidence in his ability as an able representative of the race and the time has now come that they would like to see a member of their race emulated to a position like County Commissioner As the colored people represent, a certain political phase of the situa on in this county. One among the most prominent men in the race for Probate Judge is Mr. Fagan. He needs no introduction to the voters of this county as he has always been an active member of the Republican party and has never held any elective office. He stands well with all classes, and if he has an enemy it is wholly unknown. Mr. Fagan is the present County Auditor which position he has held for some time with honor to his constituents and a credit to himself. He makes his report monthly which satisfactorily accounts or all expidentures of the county he is reputed as having given better satisfaction as Auditor than any of his predecessors. A white man who seeks to do ta mean turn by a Negro deserves he severest rebake from all intelligent voters now and for all time to come. A. Edwards one of the helper under Supt. H. K. Goodrich is a "natural phillospher." His version on the return of the 20th Kas. Soldiers, the 21st and 23rd colorored is of no small degree of comment among those who know him. He is considered a natural phillospher. Don't tell us what to do in our business—we know, just attend to your own affairs. We are men and do not propose to be ignored or trampled upon. There is not as much justice pertaining to joints in this town as some men's big toe. Some men are stuck on the most frivolous evidence while others who are known to be violating the law is not stuck. Is it a fact that any of this successful crew is paying for protection? Does Schlitz men run this city? Where is the Chief of Police(?) There are some men who seek office and thus far attempt to capture the Negro vote, but alas! that time has passed. Unless they are all right and get on the band wagon they will be defeated as in days of yore. The joint people were all run in this week and they are still at it though it seems that the few joint lawyers in town are able to get them out each time as the supposed bond is always ready. 1. Chieftian of Democratic principles was laid to sleep amid the storm of rain and hail last week. The most pathetic words came from his brother in Democratic style who knows no death. "Bring the assassins to justice,' Judge Dolman who is so large till Bill McKinley's over coat would not make him a cover for his head will appreciate the Judicial office when he gets through with it. We belong to no syndicate, combination joint or Drug store. We own and operate the State Ledger. While some depend upon the big papers to land them safely we want to say if they had all the papers with them it would be far better for them. The Lawton fund has reached $98,054. Havana is entirely clear of yellow fever. Dayton, Ohio has had a very destructive fire. Government exhibits have been started to Paris. Prince Henry of Prussia was recently held up and robbed in Siam. The mutiny of the Soudanese troops at Khartoum is causing great anxiety. Revenue collected in the Phillippine Islands during January amounted to $557,308. Harrisonville, Mo., has lost its principal business block by fire, with a loss of $60,000. Salvador, Central America, has suffered from fire to the amount of $1,000,000. G. C. Crawford, a St. Joseph, Mo., merchant was chloroformed and robbed in his room. Puerto Rico's population is 967,679. The census of 1897 showed a population of 806,708. The Marine hospital laboratory at Washington is manufacturinga serum for bubonic plague. Lead is being shipped from the Galena-Joplin district, in large quantities, to Niagara Falls. Plague deaths at Bombay reached 408 deaths a day. Famine refugees aggravate the situation. The gross postal receipts for January 1900 were $4,037,919, an increase of nearly eleven per cent. Owing to the Texas anti-trust law the American Bicycle company now ships these goods C. O. D. In New York city all flags were placed at half mast during the funeral of General Lawton at Washington. St. Joseph, Mo., has made a canvass for a city directory upon which an estimate is made giving the population at 82,540. The war department believes that Aguinaldo has escaped from the island of Luzon. The department officials would not be surprised to hear from him next as in London or Paris in company with Agoncillo. The only colored member of congress is Mr. White, of Tarboro. N. C. He is a lawyer and a graduate of Harvard. Buffalo Jones has had a hearing before the house committee on public lands concerning his scheme for a national reserve of land on which to breed buffaloes. The area of the Transvaal is 119,139 square miles, or about as large as one-half of Texas, or a little smaller than Nevada. In the Orange Free State are only 48,326 square miles, or a little less than in Louisiana. The Brooklyn navy yard has had a fire with a loss of $100,000. Besides this property loss Admiral Philip says that valuable records were burned that it will take ten years of work to replace. The Canadian government is starting out a large survey party to examine territory lying between Great Slave Lake and Hudson Bay. Military Governor, General Ludlow, of Havana, is about to create a board of health, thus turning over that work to the municipal authorities. The case which will decide the constitutionality of the law creating the Kansas Court of Visitation, is likely to be heard by the supreme court in March or April. The total collections for the port of Havana for the 301 working days of the year 1899 was $1,007,154, making an average daily collection of $35,867. The coke maker's strike in Cleveland, Ohio, resulted in an advance in their wages to $2.50 a day, with time and half for over hours, and double pay for Sunday work. No .... And since that day, now several years ago, he has not uttered a word—Baltimore News. A Great Scotsman of Today. A Great Scotman of Today. Sir Noel Paton, her majesty's limner for Scotland since 1865, completed his seventy-eighth year recently. In 1843 Sir Noel was admitted a student at the Royal academy, and in 1850 he became an academician of the Royal Scottish academy. Sir Noel Paton is a poet as well as a painter. Almost forty years ago he issued a book of verse, entitled "Poems of a Painter," and in 1867—the year he was knighted—his second volume of poems was issued under the title "Spendthrift." In his house in George square, Edinburgh, not far from the building in which Sir Walter Scott first opened his eyes, Sir Noel Paton, who enjoys good health, has one of the finest collections of arms and armor of any private owner in the country.
