A vote for Hughes, means a new kind of government thats what we don't want vote for J. S. Waruer. The business men of Topeka have received enough visits from Mrs. Nation and hence she will board with Sheriff Cook for a while. Schooch has withdrawn from the race for City attorney, he had flattering promises but could not see his way clear to make the race. This leaves the race to Soker and Spencer who will have to fight it out themselves. When you colored women go to vote fix your own ticket and vote for a gentleman that is J.S. Warner. TOPEKA, KANSAS, MARCH 5, 1901 WEDS A NEGRO. Marriage of J. Forbes Whose Brother Burned Fred Alexander. Leavenworth, Feb. 25.—John W. Forbes, brother of W. Forbes who applied the match to the pile that burned to death the negro. Fred Alexander, a short time, married Tennessee Holt, a negro girl, here Thursday. The license was issued Monday. The marriage' however, was kept quiet It was finally told by negroes and in this way came to the ears of the whites. It was a neice of the groom, Pearl Forbes, who was found murdered one morning. For the crime, as well as several others, Alexander was burned at the stake. John W. Forbes did not aid in the burning. He arrived in Leavenworth on a visit to his brother a few day after Alexander was captured. Forbes, the groom, lives at Asherville Tenn., where he owns a farm of 160 acres land and other property. He is 65 years old while his negro wife is 24. She is said to own a farm inherited from her parents not far from her parents not far from the one owned by her husband. At present Mrs Forbes is here with negro relatives her husband left town yesterday for a few days to visit relatives in another part of the state. It is said they will make their home in Tennessee. Ex. Some says Mrs. Nation is not crazy but we do not hesitate in keeping up our oft said statement that she is as crazy as a bed-bug because if you get behind a bed-bug he will run for his life and she claims to be so crazy till she hasn't the sense to run. She calls it bravery but such bravery is sufficient to place her beyond the presence of the outside world. It is a burning 'shame' to allow a woman to run things in an intelligent city like Topeka simply because she is a woman. Mr, H. S. Nichols, whose card for councilman in this issue from 5th Ward, city of Topeka, is for Law and order. If nominated and elected he stands for the business interest of the city of Topeka and will do all he can to promote it. Mr, Gleed for member of school board from third ward is one among Topeka's best citizens if he is elected to the school board he will be equal to all emergencies that may arise in that department Mr. Gleed is an able member of the law firm of Gleed Ware & Gleed, which is one of the greatest law teams in this city, in the Central bank building. When a girl consults her parents as to whether she should marry her young man it is a sign that she doesn't love him. Every girl really in love makes up her mind to marry the object of her affections without going into caucus with anyone as to whether she should or not. Ex. The suggestion has been offered that a great many women look so much better "Before Using," the hairstraightening preparation than "Alter Using," the same as a great many of them are improved in looks before daubing on paint and powder. Ex. JAMES E. PENNICK James E. Pennick is a candidate for the office of Marshal of the City Court. Mr. Pennick has lived in this city and county for many years, during which time he has been a republican. He is an old soldier and resides in the 5th ward, he is also a prominent member of Lincoln Post, G. A. R. of this city. COL.GEO.FINDLEY May Succeed Mike Sutton. There are few men in Kansas who for many years been conspicuous before the public and the many Republican State Conventions held and that is Col. Geo. Findley The Colonel has been an ardent worker for the republican cause. If any man should receive any honor from this state under Senator Burton, we believe it should be Colonel Findley. It has been clearly stated that he has his "eagle eye" on MikeSutton's place as internal revenue collector for this district of Kansas we want to say that it looks fair that Senator Burton will hear the Colonel when the time comes. T. V. CODD1NGTON For Register of Deed's. One of the prominent old soloiers for the office of Register of Deeds is T. V. Coddington who has lived in Kas. 34 years, he is worthy of any support that might be tendered him in that capacity Mi. Coddington lives on his farm on the Burlingame Road and he is a worthy old solder. FRANK A. ROOT. Mr. Frank A. Root, who is a candidate for member of school board from the First ward is a old resident of this city. For many years he operated the North Topeka Mail and thence went west and returned and it came back to him again: when after four more years of success at that journal he sold out to Mr. Arthur Capper. All in all Mr. Root is a journalist of pioneer days, and if there is any one deserving of praise it is him. He will be strongly supported for the place in the board from the first ward. O.C. Skinner For County Commissioner Mr. IO. C. Skinner is a candidate for the office of County Commissioner when the time comes. Mr Skinner stands well all over Shawnee county and will try and succeed Scott Kelsey on the board in all the townships and precincts south of the river. Mr. Skinner is a brother of ex-councilman Skinner of this city and we predict for him good success. L· Spaulding, Mr. L. Spaulding; and a member of the third ward club is a worthy citizen. Mr. Spaulding is an old soldier and went through the Federal and Civil War and spent four years, he is active today. At our present legislature he was made one of the janitors in that department by reason that he has always been a true republican. Mr Spaulding is a typical colored man never having the opportunities of the race, yet he is a worthy exponent. We want the colored people to stand by J. S. Warner for they will not get left neither time. There is one man for Councilman in the first ward that has been brought out by his many friends and will make himself felt in the fight. He is W. S. Bergund that he came to Kansj in 1884 and has lived in the 1st ward every since. he is a good business man and one who is upright in his dealings always been a Republican if he is nominated and elected you may feel proud that he will be one among the best members of the city council. He is worthy of your support he at present is engaged in Real estate on West 7th street in this city. If Mr. Bergundthal is elected to the Council from his ward he will make a first class exponent of good city-government. Mr. Bergundthal is bought out by that class of citizens whose interest it is to see that none but worthy representative men are elevated to office hence on Saturday next they will do all they can to elect him to that office.
