NOMINATED FOR MAYOR OF LAWRENCE THIRD TIME The city primaries are over There is no more commotion not withstanding the inclement weather people were out and voted early and late for their respective choice. However Mr. Selig was declared the nominee by a safe majority. As Mr. Gould's were likewise Mr. Seligs friends, they will of course support the nominee. Mr. Selig is the well known business man of Lawrence and has been for many years. He bears the name of the most honest and firm business man in the city. It seems to the approval of all Mr. Selig's friends to see him returned to the mayorality chair for they know in him their interest will be looked after. Lawrence should be proud of Mr. Selig because the office is merely an honorary one and they seek to have none but the foremost of its citizens to represent their interest We predict with a good city council and Mr. Selig in the mayor's chair the result will no doubt prove satisfactory. He will be elected in April by an overwhelming majority y. We are satisfied our people will support him without fear. He is an old soldier who served four years in the Civil War. His father was killed during the Civil War fighting for the freedom of the colored people. Such is deserving of the support of the entire colored population of Lawrence, and the editor of this paper has no doubt in his mind but all fair minded intelligent colored voters will cast their unanimous support for A. L. Selig their next mayor. BIRDCANNING CO., Making Great Gains. The Bird Canting Company is coming to the front. During the year 1897, their crop was 275 acres of tomatoes, and in 1901 they can boast of 1200 acres, 800 acres of corn at Olathe Johnson County Kas. This firm began 27 years ago at Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the increase that year being so small until it cost $1,000 per can for either corn or tomatoes, but since they have been prosperous and a nearly yield has increased their business to quite an extent. Their parole shows for labor $900 week for Topeka, and $700 for Olathe, and 50 per cent of purchase goes for farmers and labor. We want to say that many idle young men and women are given employment by the Bird Canning Company and the people of Topeka are proud of this institution.
